Lagos State government has said that it will oppose the exhumation of the corpse of Miss Whitney Adeniran, the 12-year-old student of Chrisland Schools, Opebi, Lagos, who died during the school’s inter-house sports, in February.

The government made the opposition known in a statement signed by the Director of Public Affairs in the state’s Minister of Justice, Mrs Grace Alo, on Saturday in Lagos.

The government said that the Ministry of Justice was aware of an ongoing dialogue about an alleged plan to exhume the body of the student.

It said that the ministry had yet to receive any official communication requesting for the exhumation.

The government said that it would oppose such a request if and when received.

“The circumstances for exhumation under the Coroners’ Systems Law, 2015, do not arise in this case.

“Additionally, it is not our intention to further traumatise the deceased’s family.

“We are working closely with the police who have given their reassurance that the duplicate case file would be forwarded on March 6 to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions to aid speedy issuance of legal advice,” it added.

A post-mortem report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on March 1 about the student revealed the cause of her death as asphyxia (suffocation) and electrocution.

The student died during Chrisland Schools inter-house sports on February 9 at Age Stadium, Lagos State.

The trove of garlands for the Executive Vice Chairman, EVC, of the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, Prof. Umar Danbatta, swelled again as he received “Leadership Excellence and Economic Impact Award”.

This time, the honour came from the African Leadership Organisation, ALO,, publishers of The African Leadership Magazine.

The conferment of the award occurred recently at the ALO’s annual Africa Legislative, Legal and Good Governance Conference which took place at Sheraton Hotel in Abuja, where ALO rallied stakeholders to its conference focused on “Policy, Justice and Global Cooperation for Building Back Better”.

ALO organised the event in collaboration with the National Bar Association, NBA, of the United States of America.

Africa Leadership Organisation was unequivocal that Danbatta was deserving of the award because of his outstanding achievements as the Chief Telecom Regulator in Nigeria, especially over the past five years, during which the country’s telecom sector has shown spectacular landmarks.

The concrete, measurable signposts, according to ALO included the successful auction of the 3.5 gigahertz (GHz) spectrum band marked for the deployment of the Fifth Generation (5G) networks, and the uncommon regulatory strides of his in continually creating a level-playing field for investors especially to reflate telecom-induced growth of the economy in the post-pandemic era.

Presenting the award to Danbatta, the Chairman, ALO, Dr. Ken Giami, emphasised that in keeping with the ALO’s tradition of celebrating African excellence and achievement, it had continued to showcase the bright sides of the continent’s success stories by giving recognition to deserving individuals.

Giami was emphatic that one of the individuals, whose efforts had been instrumental to the growth of the Nigerian economy was Prof. Danbatta.

“Danbatta’s visionary contribution to the society is making our communities better place for all and his contribution continues to shape Africa’s socio-economic growth and development. Danbatta has exemplified resilience, determination, and commitment in business and policy landscapes despite the diverse challenges on the continent. This is why we are recognising him today as an icon of leadership,” Giami said leaving no one in doubt on the significance of the Award.

Reiterating the objective of ALO, Giami asserted that, at the heart of ALO’s founding philosophy was the passion for the progress of the continent, all Africans and people of African descent.

He stated that the Organisation’s philosophy explained its tireless showcasing of opportunities in Africa and African excellence to the global community.

Receiving the award on behalf of Danbatta, a Deputy Director at the Legal and Regulatory Services Department of NCC, Chizwa Whyte, appreciated ALO for the award and stated that the NCC considered it another encouraging milestone to do more in regulating the nation’s telecommunications sector.

Whyte equally commended ALO for the recognition of the excellent leadership offered by the NCC boss in taking the telecoms industry in Nigeria to a higher level of significance and relevance.

“This recognition is a clarion call to us to do more for the industry by ensuring good policies and regulatory initiatives are emplaced to ensure the federal government’s policy direction on digital economy is achieved,” Whyte said.

The African Leadership Organisation has committed the last 14 years to promoting good governance and impactful leadership on the Continent, and promoting African opportunities and African dignity globally.

The objective of ALO is being achieved through the promotion of Afrocentric and reputation-boosting contents, the facilitation of African trade and market entry solutions across communities and business networking platforms, as well as through public sector training and consulting.

A member of an armed robbery gang, Alo Monday, has been arrested by operatives of Ogun State police command.

He was arrested on Friday, November 20, with a Toyota Camry car snatched from one of their victims.

The suspect, an indigene of Ebonyi State, was arrested following a distress call received by the police at Shagamu division at about 8: 30 p.m. that armed robbers were operating along Shagamu/Ikenne Road.

Upon the distress call, the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, SP Okiki Agunbiade mobilised his patrol team and moved to the scene.

On sighting the policemen, the robbers quickly jumped into an already snatched unregistered Toyota Camry also known as “muscle” and started driving towards Lagos/Shagamu interchange.

They were hotly chased by the policemen consequent upon which they abandoned the car and ran into the bush.

The entire area was cordoned off by the policemen who combed the bush in search of the hoodlums.

The effort paid off when one of the robbers, Alo Monday, was apprehended with a sledge hammer which he used to hit the owner of the car on the head before snatching the vehicle.

The combing exercise drew the attention of youths and commercial motorcyclists in the area who descended heavily on the suspect and beat him to stupor.

He was smuggled out of the place by the police who took him to the hospital for treatment.

The owner of the snatched car who sustained head injury inflicted on him with the sledge hammer was also taken to the hospital by the police.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Edward Awolowo Ajogun, has ordered the immediate transfer of the case to State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department for discreet investigation.

The CP, while commending the quick response of his men to the distress call also directed that the fleeing members of the gang must be hunted for and brought to justice within the shortest possible period.
