President Bola Tinubu has ordered the immediate suspension of three Permanent Secretaries following the discovery of another fake agency operating within the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF.

Chairman ‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, Dr Musa Aliyu, disclosed this on Friday while briefing State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Aliyu said the fake agency, identified as the National Brands Development and Mandates in the Nigeria Special Project Office, had been illegally allocated office space within the SGF’s premises.

He said the discovery was made during the commission’s broader investigation into the fake Presidential Foreign Intervention Promotion Council, PFIPC, earlier uncovered.

“The ICPC has uncovered another fake agency and office operating under the name National Brands Development and Mandates in the Nigeria Special Project Office, which had been illegally allocated office space within the premises of the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

“The discovery was made in the course of the ICPC’s broader investigation, as earlier directed by Mr President, and the commission has briefed him comprehensively on these new developments,” Aliyu said.

The ICPC boss identified the promoter of the fake agency as Prince George Nwabueze, adding that the president had ordered for his immediate arrest.

He said Nwabueze allegedly promoted the fake agency without authorisation from the president, contrary to extant laws governing the establishment and operation of government agencies.

Aliyu said the commission had engaged the Office of the SGF to obtain vital information relating to the fake agency and would continue its investigation into the matter.

“Accordingly, Mr President has directed the immediate arrest of Prince George Buchi Nwabueze and the immediate suspension of the following Permanent Secretaries; M.S Danjuma, Engineer Nadungu Gagare, and Richard Pheelangwah,” he said.

Aliyu said the presidential directive was part of broader efforts to strengthen transparency, accountability and integrity within the federal government’s administrative structures.

He said the discovery further underscored the importance of the forensic audit of the Integrated Personnel and Payroll Information System, IPPIS, and internal government processes ordered by the president.

Aliyu said the ICPC would continue to provide relevant information to the president as investigations progressed, stressing the need to identify and eliminate administrative loopholes that could facilitate the creation of fictitious agencies and offices.

Dr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, has disclosed that Nigeria’s renewable energy workforce participation remains significantly low

The post REA: Nigeria’s renewable energy workforce participation very low appeared first on Frontpageng.

Dr. Abba Aliyu, Managing Director of the Rural Electrification Agency, REA, has disclosed that Nigeria’s renewable energy workforce participation remains significantly low, with the sector generating only about 70,000 jobs despite attracting over $2 billion in cumulative investment, compared to the 16.2 million jobs supported by the global solar industry.

The gap, according to the REA MD, underscores the urgent need for a deliberate shift toward local capacity development, warning that Nigeria cannot build a sustainable energy transition on permanent import dependence.

The REA MD made this known in his keynote address at the 2026 Oriental News Conference held in Lagos, on Thursday.

Aliyu who was represented by Gboyega Ayoade, Executive Director, Corporate Services, stressed that energy policy must double as industrial policy—driven by local participation rather than expatriate dominance.

He said, “As renewable energy deployment grows, we must also grow local capacity for assembly, manufacturing, installation, operation, maintenance, recycling and skills development.

“This is where the Nigeria First policy becomes important. Clean energy must become a platform for local content, job creation and industrial value capture.

“Every major renewable energy programme should ask a simple question: beyond supplying electricity, what domestic capacity does this project build?

“Does it create jobs for Nigerian engineers and technicians? Does it use local installers? Does it create demand for local assembly? Does it support Nigerian firms? Does it strengthen the supply chain? Does it improve skills and technology transfer?

“This is how clean energy becomes an industrial policy tool,” he stated.

He further noted that REA’s programmes were being repositioned to align with that approach, leveraging clean energy as a strategic industrial policy tool.

“REA’s programmes are increasingly being positioned within this logic. Large-scale deployment creates predictable demand. Predictable demand gives confidence to manufacturers. Manufacturing creates jobs. Jobs expand incomes. And stronger local supply chains reduce costs over time.”

Aliyu revealed that key segments, including public sector solarisation, mini-grids, agricultural energy hubs, and institutional electrification, can serve as anchor markets for domestic renewable manufacturing rather than merely energy access projects.

The REA boss further emphasised that despite strong potential, many solar projects fail to advance due to weak bankability structures rather than technical limitations.

He explained that capital would only flow where projects were well-prepared, risks clearly allocated, revenue streams credible, and institutions trusted.

For him, the core constraint is not potential—but bankability.

“Projects often require stronger feasibility studies, clearer demand assessment, improved payment structures, robust technical preparation, environmental and social safeguards, deeper community engagement, and effective risk mitigation instruments.

“To address this, REA is working with development partners, financial institutions, and private developers to strengthen project preparation and financing frameworks.

“Through performance-based grants, minimum subsidy frameworks, blended finance, demand aggregation, public-private partnerships, and green finance platforms, the agency aims to improve investability across the sector,” he said.

Aliyu disclosed that Nigeria’s decarbonisation strategy must extend beyond emissions targets to a broader economic framework linking energy, finance, industry, and investment.

Speaking on Driving Nigeria’s Decarbonisation through Strategic Promotion of Clean Energy — The REA Experience, he said:

“For Nigeria, decarbonisation cannot be reduced to a narrow conversation about emissions alone.

“It must be a conversation about competitiveness, industrial renewal, energy security, climate resilience, financing, technology, and inclusive growth.

“It must recognise the structure of our economy, the role of oil and gas, the urgency of expanding electricity access, and the need to position clean energy as a catalyst for national development,” he said.

He stressed that achieving that required coordinated, system-wide reforms.

“Decarbonisation cannot be achieved through isolated rules. It requires an integrated regulatory architecture that connects energy, finance, environment, industry and investment.”

He added: “Regulation must therefore enable innovation while protecting consumers and ensuring market discipline. This is where broad regulatory reform becomes essential.”

“For the extractive industry, regulations around emissions management, carbon capture, gas flaring reduction, clean energy adoption, environmental reporting and sustainable finance must be clear and coordinated.

For the power sector, regulations around mini-grids, embedded generation, net metering, wheeling, storage and distributed energy resources must continue to evolve.”

Aliyu cautioned that Nigeria’s decarbonisation pathway must reflect its development realities.

“We are a developing country with a growing population, expanding energy demand and significant infrastructure deficits.

“Millions of Nigerians still require access to reliable electricity. Businesses still face high energy costs. Public institutions still depend heavily on diesel. Industrial clusters still struggle with unreliable supply. Rural communities still need power for productive use.

“Therefore, the challenge before us is not simply to reduce emissions.

“The real challenge is to expand energy access, grow the economy, industrialise, and reduce emissions at the same time,” he said.

The REA MD said decentralised renewable energy solutions remained critical to achieving that balance.

“For many years, the energy transition was sometimes presented as a trade-off between development and climate responsibility.

“But the evidence from Nigeria’s renewable energy access experience shows the opposite.

“Clean energy can reduce emissions while improving livelihoods. It can lower the cost of production while improving reliability.

“It can serve communities that the conventional grid may not reach quickly. It can power hospitals, schools, markets and farms.

“It can also create new industries around solar, storage, metering, digital monitoring, installation, maintenance and local manufacturing.

“In this sense, clean energy is not only an environmental solution. It is an economic development strategy,” he stated.

Aliyu revealed that the REA’s interventions were helping transition Nigeria from fragmented electrification efforts to a more structured renewable energy market.

“Key programmes include the Nigeria Electrification Project, the Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-up programme, the Energizing Education Programme, the National Public Sector Solarisation Initiative, and various mini-grid and agricultural energy projects.

According to him, those initiatives demonstrate that renewable energy can be deployed at scale through practical, private-sector-driven models.

The REA MD emphasised that decarbonisation could not be achieved through isolated rules, adding that it required an integrated regulatory architecture that connected energy, finance, environment, industry and investment.

“Government must provide clear policy direction, while the regulators must create confidence, the private sector must invest, financial institutions must innovate and development partners must de-risk priority markets,” Aliyu noted.

He also disclosed that the extractive industry must reduce emissions and support cleaner development models, while the media must continue to create informed platforms for accountability and public understanding.

The REA MD therefore commended Oriental News Nigeria for convening the conference, noting that the media plays a critical role not only in reporting events but in shaping informed national dialogue.

The Rural Electrification Agency, REA, would be leading conversations on Nigeria’s renewable energy strategy which is a component of broader energy transition strategy of the federal government.

The 2026 Oriental News national conference with the theme, “Carbon Capture: Accelerating Decarbonization Initiatives In Nigeria’s Extractive Industry Through Broad Regulatory Reforms” is bringing together top energy companies and experts as well as key government agencies to exchange innovative ideas on how to reduce carbon emissions in the energy sector and engage in knowledge sharing along individual industry perspectives.

The conference scheduled to hold on July 23, 2026, at Radisson Blu, Ikeja Lagos, also has a Sub Theme: Addressing Finance Challenges, Investment Strategies, Operational Sustainability and Climate Change Management.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, MD/CEO, of the REA, Abba Abubakar Aliyu, will engage critical stakeholders, including energy expert, industry leaders and financial institutions on the agency’s efforts in minimising carbon emissions through expanded renewable energy development.

Nigeria drives its renewable energy transition through the Energy Transition Plan, ETP, which aims for net-zero emissions by 2060.

The country prioritizes decentralised solar power, green manufacturing, and massive multilateral investments to combat grid fragility and end its heavy reliance on petrol and diesel generators.

Launched to achieve net-zero, the ETP leverages a $410 billion investment strategy focused on expanding grid capacity, promoting clean cooking, and modernizing the power sector.

The Distributed Access through Renewable Energy Scale-Up, DARES, is a major $750 million World Bank-backed facility aimed at providing electricity to over 17.5 million unserved Nigerians via solar home systems and mini-grids.

The REA, is rapidly deploying community-based solar mini-grids to bypass fragile national transmission lines and directly empower rural businesses and healthcare centers, and this would be the focus of Aliyu’s key presentations at the conference.

Nigeria is prioritising local manufacturing of solar panels, inverters, and standalone renewable systems to create jobs and build domestic supply chains.

The government offers policy incentives—such as tax holidays for independent power producers and specialized feed-in tariffs—to attract private capital into the renewable sector.

The global oil and gas industry operators are working assiduously to reduce emissions and Nigeria is also facing similar pressures to bring down the scale of emissions across all critical sectors of the economy.

Every year, Oriental News Nigeria, a leading news Online platform provides opportunity for discussions among critical stakeholders in Nigeria’s energy, finance and industrial sector of the economy to discuss regulatory issues, investment opportunities with the aim to support both private and public led initiatives to improve economic growth and development.

Now in its 5th year, the 2026 conference is seeking to promote environmental sustainability by addressing actions and challenges facing operators in the extractive industry, particularly in the country’s oil and gas, petrochemicals and manufacturing sectors.

The conference will convene operators in the oil and gas industry to exchange ideas and decarbonisation solutions that align with operational needs.

The summit will focus on the industry challenges of harmonising environmental commitments with business performance.

Growing demands for sustainability have long underscored the need for the oil and gas sector to reduce its environmental impact. Now, with the emergence of innovative solutions, the industry is entering a transformative phase — reimagining the future of energy.

One of the key highlights of the summit is the presentation of case-studies from major industry players who have either achieved significant progress in their decarbonisation goals or are well on the path to success.

It brings all sides of the business together: vendors, oil and gas producers and suppliers. It gives an opportunity to hear different points of view on the same issue and find what suits the company best and it will offer unique opportunity to stay ahead of decarbonisation trends, connect with industry leaders and turn sustainability goals into operational strategies.

The topic seeks to interrogate regulatory frameworks, decarbonisation pathways initiated by operators, and financing gaps that has led to slow progress towards promoting meeting the country’s zero emissions targets.

The conference aims to foster dialogue on energy transition with the opening ceremony to be hosted with key presentations by the guest speaker and keynote speaker who will address the theme of the conference.

There will be panel discussions by stakeholders from broad spectrum of petroleum industry, manufacturing, financial sector, regulatory agencies among others.

This aspect of the discussion will include thematic dialogues, policy exchanges, and joint segments, potentially incorporating hybrid or digital elements for broader access and sustainability.

Prominent political leaders and scholars have raised fresh concerns over the health of Nigeria’s democracy, warning that poverty, cash politics, partisan manipulation of electoral laws and rising voter apathy can undermine the credibility of future elections if urgent corrective steps are not taken.

The warnings came on Sunday night during a high-level policy dialogue, Boiling Point Arena, where participants examined the implications of the recent amendments to Nigeria’s Electoral Law ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The panelists on the popular discourse transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on seven radio stations were former Niger State Governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, a governorship hopeful in Ogun State, Otunba Segun Showunmi and a scholar at the University of Oxford, England, Prof Olugbenro Oyekan.

The once-in-a-month programme, now in its 41st edition was hosted by a veteran media professional and public relations strategist, Dr Ayo Arowojolu.

First to fire the salvo was Dr Babangida Aliyu who said worsening poverty across the country had become a powerful instrument for electoral manipulation, arguing that many politicians now exploit the frustration of citizens to influence voting outcomes.

According to him, growing public frustration with leadership has created an environment where voters are easily swayed by immediate survival needs.

“Nigerians are already frustrated about leadership in Nigeria. They can vote anything to scramble for what to eat,” Aliyu said, adding that politicians had increasingly capitalized on the situation to perfect vote-buying and other forms of electoral malpractice.

Also speaking, Ogun State governorship aspirant, Otunba Ṣẹgun Showunmi focused on the growing problem of voter apathy, which he described as one of the most serious threats to Nigeria’s democratic future.

Showunmi blamed the political elite for what he termed the “demarketing” of democracy through broken promises, manipulation of party primaries and widespread vote-buying.

“When people don’t vote, they have already voted with their silence,” he said.

He noted that declining participation in elections reflects the deepening loss of faith in the political system, pointing to the roughly 29 per cent voter turnout recorded in recent off-cycle elections as evidence of widespread public disengagement.

Showunmi also criticized lawmakers for what he described as self-serving legislative practices.

“Laws are now created in the legislature to suit the legislators themselves,” he said.

Despite the grim outlook, he urged young Nigerians to take greater responsibility for the country’s democratic future by participating actively in the electoral process.

“If this generation cannot perform civic duties, they lose the moral right to complain,” he argued.

Offering an international perspective, UK-based scholar, Prof. Olugbenro Oyekan maintained that periodic amendments to electoral laws were necessary for strengthening democratic processes, but warned that such reforms must not be driven by narrow political interests.

“Constant review does not mean people should not trust the process,” he said, noting that electoral systems must evolve to confront challenges such as money politics and emerging political manipulations.

However, Prof Oyekan cautioned that the credibility of reforms depends largely on the sincerity of political actors.

“Amendments must not be driven by partisan motives,” he warned, stressing that legal reforms alone cannot deliver credible elections without a broader reorientation of political values.

A well publicized discourse, Boiling Point Arena, will be broadcast live on WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM and Kruzz 92.9FM, Asaba, and Opera Tune 106.3FM as well as a cable television, NSTV on GoTV channel 316.

Will the new amendments in the electoral law particularly as it affects electronic transmission of results help to strengthen the ballot or create loopholes to manipulate the process in the forthcoming 2027 Election? The popular monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, takes this on next Sunday March 8, 2026.

Three eminent Nigerians – former governor of Niger State, Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, a governorship hopeful in Ogun State, Otunba Ṣẹgun Showunmi, and a United Kingdom-based research fellow, Prof. Olugbenro Oyekan – will dissect the issue.

Probing questions begging for answers during the potentially intense debate include whether the new amendments will be a catalyst to restore voter confidence or a trigger for political apathy.

The once-in-a-month current affairs programme, now in its 41st edition, is to be transmitted via Zoom and broadcast live on six partnering radio stations across Lagos, Ogun and Delta states.

With an incredibly large online followership and wide listenership base, Boiling Point Arena is hosted by a media professional and public relations strategist, Dr. Ayo Arowojolu.

Foremost traditional ruler, Prof Saka Matemilola, is the keynote speaker and chair to herald the debate over a two-hour duration.

The topic of discourse is: “Electoral Law Amendment: Reform for Credible Democracy or Legal Engineering for Political Advantage?”

The trio of Babaginda Aliyu, Showunmi and Oyekan are to draw from their deep knowledge of Nigerian political history to interrogate all the issues surrounding the amendments in the electoral law in a balanced and intellectually stimulating session.

The discussants are to in particular take a look at the contentious issue of electoral integrity, weighing in on the operations in terms of neutrality of the electoral body itself, the INEC, deployment of technology and need for transparency.

Quite expectedly, the speakers would also address the trust deficit by opposition elements as to whether or not suspicions generated as reflected in the groundswell of protests against what many tagged not far-reaching amendments are justified.

Aliyu is well versed as an old breed politician as he was elected to the Federal House of Representatives in 1983 for Chanchaga Federal Constituency of Niger State.

He subsequently got elected as governor of the state in 2007.

One interesting characterisation of Aliyu’s administration was his adoption of the prefix to his name, Chief Servant of Niger State as he rejected being addressed as His Excellency throughout his tenure.

For his part, Otunba Segun Showunmi is a political thought leader and promoter of The Alternative Movement.

He is as well an aspirant in the race for governorship of Ogun State.

Prof Olugbenro Oyekan is a prominent research fellow at the University of Oxford, England.

A Professor of Practice in Management and Finance, he is also Dean at the International School of Management(ISM), Lagos.

A well publicized discourse, Boiling Point Arena, will be broadcast live on WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Erimbe 94.7FM, Women Radio 91.7FM and Kruzz 92.9FM as well as a cable television, NSTV on GoTV channel 316.

Boiling Point is a news and general interest group comprising eminent personalities including over 300 professors, media professionals, technocrats, industry leaders, high court justices, traditional rulers, security top shots and several others.

The Police command in Gombe State has arrested four suspects over alleged conspiracy and possession of 304 counterfeit United States 100-dollar notes.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued to journalists on Friday in Gombe.

Abdullahi said the arrests followed an intelligence-led operation by officers of the Dukku Divisional Headquarters at 11 a.m. on January 15.

He listed the suspects as Kabiru Abubakar, 29, Abubakar Aliyu, 30, Abdulrahman Mustapha, 22, and Isah Alhasan, 45, from Dukku, Kaduna and Kano.

“The suspects were arrested in possession of three hundred and four pieces of counterfeit United States 100-dollar notes,” Abdullahi said.

He said investigations revealed the suspects confessed and implicated another suspect as the supplier of the counterfeit notes.

In a related development, Abdullahi said two other suspects were arrested the same day with substances suspected to be mercury.

“They admitted the substance was allegedly used in producing counterfeit currency,” he said.

The spokesperson said five additional suspects were arrested for various crimes, including a suspected bandit, with dangerous exhibits recovered.

He added that a kidnapped victim was rescued unhurt during one of the operations.

Abdullahi said all suspects remained in police custody as investigations continued at the State Criminal Investigation Department.
