Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa on Wednesday sent the name of Adelami to the parliament for screening and approval.

At resumption of plenary on Thursday in Akure, Mr Benjamin Jayeola, the clerk of the assembly read the letter of the governor on the floor of the house.

Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi, APC/Owo 1, moved the motion for submission and consideration of the House’s Selection Committee’s report on the nominee.

The motion was seconded by Hon. Felix Afe, Akoko North West 2/APC.

Speaking on the report, Mr Abayomi Akinruntan, Ilaje 1/APC, said that the report on Adelami showed that the nominee, if confirmed would function effectively as deputy governor of the state owing to his wealth of experience and track record.

Akinruntan, who is the chairman of the selection committee, said that the nominee was physically  and mentally fit for the office of deputy governor.

The motion for the confirmation of Dr Olayide Adelami was subsequently passed by a voice vote by the lawmakers.

Olamide Oladiji, the Speaker of the assembly, tasked the nominee to impact on people of the state and use his office judiciously for growth and development of the state.

Appreciating the legislators for his confirmation, Adelami said that the new responsibility was a call to service, and  promised to do his best.

Adelami said that he would promote good relationship between the executive and the legislature and ensure to bring back the aggrieved members of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

According to him, he would not betray emotion and  confidence reposed in him by the state governor for nominating him.

He also seized the opportunity to commiserate with the family of  late Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, the former governor who died on December 27 after a protracted illness.

Adelami was a deputy clerk of the National Assembly and a governorship aspirant in the 2020 governorship primaries conducted  by the All Progressivess Congress.

Oladiji’s emergence followed the inauguration of the state’s 10th Assembly by the clerk, Mr Benjamin Jaiyeola, on Saturday.

Jaiyeola had initially read a proclamation from Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, paving way for the inauguration of the 10th Assembly.

Oladiji (APC), representing Ondo East Constituency, was unanimously elected the Speaker by 26 members of the assembly.

The motion for the Speaker’s nomination was moved by Mr Temitope Akomolafe, representing Ifedore Constituency and seconded by Mr Oladapo Biola, representing Ondo West Constituency 2.

Oladiji, a businessman and an educationist, was the Deputy Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly.

Also, Mr Abayomi Akinruntan (APC), representing Ilaje Constituency 1, was elected the Deputy Speaker of the Assembly unopposed.

Akinruntan nomination’s motion was moved by Mrs Tosin Ajirotutu, representing Idanre Constituency.

In his speech, the new Speaker said that he felt honoured and thanked his colleagues for the confidence reposed in him.

He also thanked the state governor for his unrelenting support and for giving the enabling environment to the legislative arm and his strong leadership for peace to reign in the state.

Oladiji tasked his colleagues to demonstrate utmost accountability and openness in the discharge of their duties, saying that they should not be accused of not doing their best for the state.

The Speaker promised to ensure smooth and harmonious relationships with the executive for continuous development of the state.

Oladiji enjoined all lawmakers in the assembly to join hands with him in moving the state forward.

The House of Assembly also elected Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi (APC), representing Owo Constituency 1 and Ajirotutu as Deputy Majority Leader.

Four lawmakers out of the 26 were elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) while the rest are from the ruling All Progressives Congress.

Speaking to newsmen, Ogunmolasuyi promised his constituents better representation.

He expressed the belief that the 10th Assembly would deliver more for the state considering the calibre of people in it.

According to him, the new Speaker is a person of vast wealth of experience.

The Majority Leader promised that the entire house would give the Speaker necessary support.

The House of Assembly then declared six-week recess and it is expected to resume on July 17.
