The Nigeria Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, on Friday honoured Nigeria’s box office queen, Funke Akindele, with multiple awards in recognition of her achievements in the Nollywood industry.

Akindele received five awards at a ceremony held at the NFVCB Hall, Alagbon, Ikoyi, Lagos.

The event, organised by the Managing Director of NFVCB, Dr. Shaibu Husseini, was attended by the Director-General of the National Arts Theatre, Mrs. Tola Akerele, who represented Mrs Hannatu Musawa, the Minister of Arts, Culture and Creative Economy.

Musawa, in her remarks, commended Akindele for her giant strides in the Nollywood industry.

“I congratulate my sister, Akindele, whose extraordinary consistency over the past four years has earned her the well-deserved title of Nigeria’s Box Office Queen.

“Through creativity, discipline, innovation, and an exceptional understanding of her audience, Akindele has demonstrated that Nigeria’s stories can command our cinemas, captivate millions, and generate unprecedented volumes of box office returns.

“Her achievements are not only personal milestones, they have become industry benchmarks, no doubt. Her performing has raised the bar and has inspired a generation of Nigerians all over the world,” she said.

Musawa restated that Akindele’s performances in the Nollywood industry had fostered greater cultural awareness of Nigerian society.

“Akindele has also shown that Nollywood is not only culturally influential, it is economically strategic. As an industry, we remain committed to policies that will expand cinema and enter projects across our African countries.

“Nigeria will also continue to encourage responsible content, and create an enabling environment where talent and enterprise can flourish.

“On behalf of the Federal Ministry of Arts and Culture and the Creative Economy, I warmly congratulate Akindele, on this exceptional milestone, setting a new benchmark for excellence and consistency in the industry,” she said.

In his remarks, Dr. Husseini extolled Akindele’s virtues, noting that she deserved the recognition accorded her.

“Akindele has so many awards because we have been planning to give her since 2020, and then up to the one that she won this year.

“I believe she deserves all the flowers she has and we need to give those flowers to her now that she needs them most and fresh.

“The award ceremony was not at the instance of Akindele but a secret one planned to her surprise, we only recognise her great works and deservingly present the awards to her,” he said.

Also speaking, a veteran filmmaker and Managing Director of BrickHouse Media, Mahmood Ali-Balogun, commended Akindele for elevating Nollywood to international recognition.

“The resilience of innovators like Akindele has made the Nollywood industry to grow in leaps and bounds.

“There are challenges here and there, but we will not dwell on it but rather celebrate our achievements in the movie world.

“With the grace of God, things will only get better. What I would admonish us all to do is to stay together.

“We will have disagreements and all that but we need to stop tearing the industry down. It’s the only industry we have,” he advised.

An elated Akindele expressed gratitude to the NFVCB and attendees, reiterating her commitment to contribute further to the growth of Nollywood.

She attributed her success to dedication, hard work and diligence.

Other speakers, including veteran actress and Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN) South-West Vice President, Dayo Amusa, and the General Manager of Ozone Cinemas, Mr Patrick Lee, also commended Akindele for breaking barriers in the industry.

The NFVCB presented Akindele with four awards, while the Radio Television Theatre and Arts Workers Union of Nigeria (RATTAWU) presented her with one award.

The National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, has congratulated actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, on the box office success of her latest film, “Behind The Scene.”

The film, popularly known as BTS, has grossed over ₦2.4 billion and continues to show in cinemas across Nigeria.

Riding on the milestone, the NFVCB, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed plans to honour Akindele with a Box Office Queen Award covering 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The board’s Executive Director, Dr Shaibu Husseini, described the achievement as “another landmark moment for Nigerian cinema.”

He said the feat further cemented Akindele’s status as one of Nollywood’s most influential and commercially successful figures.

According to him, Akindele has now delivered record-breaking cinema performances for four consecutive years, a rare accomplishment in the industry.

“This level of consistency reflects creative excellence and a deep understanding of audience engagement and Nigeria’s evolving film business,” Husseini said.

He disclosed that arrangements were ongoing to present the awards at a mutually convenient time.

“We planned to honour her earlier, but she requested a later date. The Minister of Arts and top female executives will join us,” he said.

Husseini added that the minister, Hannatu Musa Musawa, was “excited about the development.”

He reaffirmed NFVCB’s commitment to recognising achievements that strengthened visibility, growth and commercial sustainability in the audiovisual industry.

In a related development, the board also congratulated actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham, on her directorial debut, “Oversabi Auntie.”

The film has crossed ₦1 billion in box office earnings and ranks among the four highest-grossing Nollywood titles of all time.

“This is a historic and impressive entry. We celebrate both filmmakers as symbols of Nollywood’s growth, resilience and global promise,” Husseini said.

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer (MD/CEO) of South West Development Commission, SWDC, Dr Charles Akinola, has called for deliberate collaboration between business thinkers and policy shapers to foster Nigeria’s transformation.

Akinola made the call in his keynote address at the maiden annual lecture of the Alumni Association of University of Ibadan School of Business.

The lecture was themed ‘The Power of Collaboration: Alumni as a Catalyst for Business Growth and Societal Transformation, and Building Legacies.’

Other speakers include the immediate past Managing Director of First Bank PLC., Dr Adesola Adeduntan; Dr Adebola Akindele and Mr Godwin Odah.

Akinola, who harped on the need for a deliberate collaboration between business leaders and policy makers, said “Business provides energy, innovation, and risk appetite; policy provides stability, scale, and systems.

“Imagine a partnership where alumni of business schools and alumni of policy schools work hand-in-hand, one designing sustainable business models, the other shaping regulatory frameworks that allow those models to flourish.

“That synergy is how Singapore built its competitiveness, how Rwanda re-imagined governance, and how the Nordic nations transformed welfare into wealth.

“We must reproduce that model here in Nigeria through intentional partnerships between our business thinkers and our policy shapers. The alumni network is the perfect incubator for such collaboration.”

Highlighting the strategic link among network, knowledge and talent to the transformation of the society, the SWDC boss posited: “Knowledge gives us depth — it is the light that guides decision and innovation. Network gives us reach — it extends our influence beyond geography and sector. Talent gives us force — it converts insight into execution.

“When these three combine, collaboration becomes catalytic. It turns a classroom relationship into a lifelong partnership and an alumni body into an economic powerhouse.”

He reinforced his position with the example of how the SWDC is institutionalizing collaboration to achieve true legacies in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda

He said: “At the South West Development Commission, we are turning collaboration into policy and practice.

“Our One Economic Bloc Strategy seeks to integrate the economies of the six South West states into a single competitive region, creating a seamless regional market for goods, skills, and investment.

“We are building partnerships with universities to establish innovation hubs, working with the private sector on industrial corridors, and engaging the diaspora to bring home both capital and competence. None of this can succeed in isolation. It takes the combined effort of public institutions, private investors, academia, and civil society.

“This is what I mean by collaborative federalism development through partnership, not competition. It is collaboration at scale: government, business, academia, and communities co-creating a better future. The alumni community can mirror this approach an ecosystem rather than an association…

“The sub-theme “Building Legacies” reminds us that legacy is not what we leave behind, but what we set in motion. We build legacies when we design systems that outlive us.

“As Chinua Achebe said, “The story is our escort; without it, we are blind.” Let our story be one of service, integrity, and innovation of men and women who used knowledge, network, and talent to change society.

“Whether in business, governance, or academia, let us institutionalize our values. Let our companies become models of sustained ethical excellence. Let our networks become platforms for inclusion. Let our leadership inspire trust across generations.”

Earlier, Dr Adeduntan pointed out that the era of individual efforts was over, stressing that the dynamics are now in favour of collaboration whether in business, academia or governance.

His words: “Globally, growth is no longer about individuals but by networks of people and groups. The world economy has become extremely inter-dependent and connected through collaboration. The era of independent efforts driving growth is over – in business, governance and academia…

“Alumni networks could serve as strategic reservoir of expertise, relationships and influence. They pull relationships and influence together.”

He also said that alumni associations were already shifting from social events to economic activities that drive innovation, entrepreneurship and prosperity.

“Inclusivity enhances creativity. We need to rethink the focus of the alumni groups to create values for members. That value orientation is very important for us,” he said.

While welcoming participants, the president of the association, Prof. Olugbenga Mokunolu, said the association was determined to support the university, adding that it would continue to support the UI School of Business, mentor future leaders and current colleagues to help them navigate professional landscape successfully.

Celebrity chef, Hilda Baci, on Saturday achieved her culinary feat of cooking the largest pot of jollof rice in a bid to set a new Guinness World Record, GWR.

Baci successfully completed the feat, cooking about 200 bags of rice in a 22,619-litre pot, measuring six metres wide and six metres tall in about nine hours.

The 28-year-old chef had initially planned to cook 250 bags of Basmati rice but reduced it to 200 bags due to weighing challenges.

The event, held at Car Park B of Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos, tagged, ‘Gino World Jollof Festival’, was attended by fans, food vendors and entertainers, who turned out en masse to support the chef.

After the preparation of the jollof rice, it was distributed to over 30,000 people in takeaway packs.

People were also encouraged to bring their coolers as the food was in excess.

The federal government had, on Friday, commended Baci in her quest to set a new GWR for cooking the world’s largest pot of jollof rice.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said the effort was another demonstration of Nigeria’s global excellence.

Idris gave the commendation through Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, the Director-General of the Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, at the event venue.

Idris expressed optimism that her record attempt would inspire a new generation and creatives.

“We encourage more young Nigerians to channel their creativity and talents into ventures that will not only benefit them personally but also contribute to national development and global recognition,” he said.

Nigerian influencers and Nollywood stars including Funke Akindele, Bamike Olawunmi-Adenibuyan, Enioluwa Adeoluwa, Tomike Adeoye among others, joined thousands of fans to support Baci during the event.

Students of Bethesda Home and School for The Blind were also at the event to lend their support to the chef.

The record-breaking feat adds another milestone to Baci’s growing list of achievements while showcasing Nigerian cuisine on the global stage.

Benjamin Akindele is a man of many parts. An astute politician in Alimoso local government area of Lagos State, he is the South West zone administrator of the leading opposition party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP. A businessman of repute, he is also among other things, the president of the 1984 set of the old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, LABASCO, Orile Agege, Lagos. Little wonder therefore that although his birthday is May 12, the celebration went on for days as he was celebrated by different groups. For instance, while his political associates and members of the Egbe Omo Adugbo Egbeda celebrated him on May 12, another bash was held on Saturday, May 17, at his residence and attended largely by members of the 1984 set of LABASCO old students, friends and well-wishers.

Images show the faces at the Saturday event:

I interviewed Yinka Quadri and Taiwo Hassan (Ogogo) on the same day. I still remember the red Peugeot 505 they drove to the Onipetesi office of The Punch that evening. Yes, they honoured this reporter and I interviewed them in the office at Onipetesi. I was a regular at Tunji Bamisigbin’s and Ralph Nwadike’s office. It was a productive hunting ground for me to catch both budding and made actors. It was there I was first drawn to Funsho Adeolu because of the Adegeye in his name. Oga Bello Adebayo Salami, I interviewed in Ebute Metta and Jide Kosoko I interviewed in his office around Jibowu.

Unforgettable experience was my session with Sola Sobowale in her office off Allen Avenue, Ikeja. We sat on the floor, swigged gists and laughed loudly. Beautiful soul, that one, in and out. We spoke for a long time until mummy duty called when the twins returned from school. I spent many days on the Ikorodu set of Checkmate. That was where I forged a bond with Amaka Igwe. (Then she was Amaka Isaac-Ene), Ngozi Nwosu and Uncle K, Kunle Bantefa. But the hard work that goes into each movie, each series we sit back to enjoy on DStv, Netflix, YouTube, Prime and the cinemas is huge. Forget the glamour. The sweat, tears and focus it requires to become a face or voice in Nollywood is unquantifiable.

I will never forget the few hours I spent on the set of one of Amaka Igwe’s movies, somewhere in Ogudu GRA and the way Norbert Young wowed me that day. Nobody, no other actor has left such a mark on my 20-something year old mind then like he did. In one of his scenes, he was required to cry and he produced the right amount of tears each time the director shouted “Action.” Then “Cut” and Norbert Young wiped his eyes, returned to the people he was sitting with and they continued their gist, laughing and joking. The Director would then call for another take and Norbert would tear up again, cry so convincingly I wanted to go console him. One minute later, he was back to his gisting session, jokes and laughs. They had many many retakes of that scene, even this reporter was exhausted in her chair. But Norbert Young didn’t run out of tears or miss his lines.

In those days, I enjoyed my time on location because it helped me understand the beat more, see how movies were put together and I could do two interviews in one day and book four for later. There were no phones then, remember?

READ ALSO: Ondo NYSC boss to ‘corpers’: You can’t afford to let Nigeria down

My date with Pete Edochie is a full book. Olu Jacobs? We are a blessed country. Ah, I must not forget the biggest interview of all (for me). Chief Hubert Ogunde in his Ososa village in Ogun state. Weeks after that, the old man went the way of all mortals. So, is this a peep into the book What Funke Egbemode Did Before She Became Editor? I’m shaking my head, not exactly. I’m just in a collaboration mood and mode.

Nollywood has come a long way and as I watched the 11th edition of the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards (AMVCA), my sad heart lifted and told me, “It’s not over for the Nigerian economy.” Nollywood has shown that everything that Nigeria needs to be great is in Nigeria. All we need to do is to keep the thick grabbing fingers of politicians and civil servants away from it.

We will just pray for those who keep running around the world looking for foreign investors that the Lord will open their eyes to what is already in the pockets of their trousers.

All those encounters with the veterans I started this piece with happened more than 30 years ago. I saw the boyish look of Funsho Adeolu in an old flick and I said to myself, “This is the story of Nollywood.” The boys are now men. As I watched Femi Adebayo on stage with his well-deserved award for the beautiful Seven Doors, many happy thoughts flooded my mind. I remember T’oluwa Nile, Rattlesnake, Saworo Ide. I remember Aye and J’ayesimi, Taxi Driver, Owo Lagba etc.

I remember the humble beginning of the Nigerian entertainment industry. Many didn’t give it a chance. They talked and looked down on it. But here we are, on the way to fantastic greatness already doing enviable exploits and, wait for it, all on its own. Nollywood is successful all by itself.

Our music, our movies are our exports, our ambassadors by themselves.

Or is there any other sector of the Nigerian economy that started small, weathered the storm of piracy, no funding, low funding, then grew, expanded, became a national pride like our music and movie industries? I must have missed it.

How many states that produced these hardworking actors have film villages that we can reference? But Ibrahim Chatta and Kunle Afolayan pulled themselves up by their bootstraps and built two. Just like Aliko Dangote did what successive Nigerian governments could not do for decades—a working refinery—Nollywood employs thousands of Nigerians.

As manufacturers and internationals leave Nigeria in droves, our entertainment industry is growing roots and bringing in the sheaves in tons. It is touching many sectors that once refused to touch it with a barge pole. The industry that we sneered and hissed at is increasingly looking like our bailout. Or you think a Youth Corper can just walk into Kunle Afolayan’s movie school like he’s doing the academy a favour today? No, he would have to follow due process because it is a profitable, focused corporate entity.

When Funke Akindele hit the N1bn mark with Everybody Loves Jennifer in 2024 and Mo Abudu’s Wedding Party shook the charts, who saw them coming?

While American filmmakers are leaving for Canada and UK locations, Nigerian veteran actors are building film villages that are also resorts for us to save on flight tickets to Europe and Dubai and enjoy our breathtaking natural landscapes. Donald Trump in all his troublesome trumping is seeing Hollywood as deserving of attention, shouldn’t that tell us it is time to rev up our support for this reliable joy-giving sector of the economy?

This is our tangible alternative to oil. This is the only evidence that we can actually diversify the economy, earn “hard currency,” attract foreign investors without setting up dozens of committees or organizing summits. We will just pray for those who keep running around the world looking for foreign investors that the Lord will open their eyes to what is already in the pockets of their trousers.

Lagos State government has charged the leadership of schools in the state to explore the abundant opportunities their old students association can provide to support government’s efforts in the provision of infrastructure and conducive learning environment.

The government made the call just as it commended the old students association of Lagos Baptist Secondary Schoool, LABASCO, for its consistent support of the alma mater.

The latest in a series of interventions by the alumni in Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, LBSS, is a special seminar for Senior Secondary School 3, SSS3, students, the teachers and parents.

The well-attended seminar was held on Thursday at the school premises to sensitise students, teachers and parents ahead of the coming West African Secondary School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, and other related ones.

The state government was represented by the Tutor-General/Permanent Secretary, Education District 1, Prince Adebowale Adeoye Bashir.
