The Guild of Corporate Online Publishers, GOCOP, has commiserated with its member, the publisher of Freedom Online, Mr. Gabriel Akinadewo, on the passing of his son, Washington Oluwagbenga.

Washington died on Sunday in Lagos at a private hospital following a brief illness.

The 21 years old who read Information Technology, recently completed his university education at Trinity University, Yaba, Lagos and was preparing to proceed on his National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, one-year programme in January.

He has since been buried.

In a letter of condolence signed by its president, Mr. Danlami Nmodu, and its General Secretary, Sufuyan Ojeifo, GOCOP expressed grief over the loss.

The GOCOP executives described Washington’s death as saddening and tragic, adding that his passing was a huge loss to his family and friends.

The Guild urged the Akinadewo family to take solace in the focused and productive life their late son lived.

The letter reads in part: “Washington’s life, though cut short, was a testament to his potential and promise. His impending National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in January 2026, consequent upon his graduation from the Trinity University, Lagos, where he studied Information Technology, was a milestone that symbolised his dedication to scholarship and nation-building. His passing is a profound loss to your family, the online publishing community, and the nation at large.

“In this dark hour, we find solace in the memories of Washington’s life, his accomplishments, and the legacy he leaves behind. May these memories bring you comfort and strength, and may the Almighty God grant you, your wife, and loved ones the fortitude to navigate this difficult time”.

The GOCOP executives prayed for the repose of Oluwagbenga’s soul and for God’s protection over his family and loved ones.

Nigerians have been urged to seek the face of God, turn from their wicked ways and ask for forgiveness “for our Creator to heal the country completely.”

Speaking on Wednesday during an Anointing Service to celebrate the beginning of Ash Wednesday, the Chairman, Board of Trustees (BoT) of Motailatu Church of God, MCG, Senior Superintendent Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II), quoting from Isaiah 59, said “the Lord’s hand is not shortened that it cannot save, neither His ear heavy, that it cannot hear” the cries of Nigerians but sin has separated Nigerians from God.

Preaching on the Theme: “If My People (II Chronicles 7:14)” at the Restoration Parish of the Church in Akute, Ogun State, Akinadewo declared that Nigerians must urgently seek the face of God to eradicate the socio-political, economic and security challenges in the country.

Quoting Isaiah 55:7, he said: “Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts, and let him return unto the Lord, and he will have mercy upon him, and to our God, for He will abundantly pardon”.

READ ALSO: Many feared dead as truck crashes into commuter-vehicles

“We read stories almost on a daily basis of so-called clerics involved in ritual killings. This is against God’s Commandments”.

He also said challenges of hunger in the land can be solved “with sincerity and right policies from those in authority” and the divine backing of God.

Quoting II Kings 7, Akinadewo declared that the famine in Samaria became a thing of the past when God sent Prophet Elisha to speak to the people.

On insecurity, he likened the invasion of Nigeria by kidnappers, terrorists and bandits to what King Jehoshaphat faced in Judah when he was threatened by Moabites and Ammonites.

“In II Chronicles 20:20, King Jehoshaphat told the people: ‘Believe in the Lord Your God, so shall ye be established. Believe His prophets, so shall ye prosper’.

“Eventually, God conquered their enemies and the Children of Judah started dancing. The time for God to destroy all these blood-thirsty maniacs in Nigeria is here. Nigerians will dance and rejoice eventually. This country shall prosper. But, we must turn to God.”

Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State has said that lack of public accountability, weak institutions, passivity of citizens and civil society organisations are reasons Nigeria still gropes for good governance

Fubara spoke at the sixth yearly lecture of SWAAYA Limited, publishers of Freedom Online, on Thursday, in Lagos.

At the event, he won the newspaper’s Governor of the Year 2024 Award.

The lecture tagged “Nigeria’s Socio-Political Challenges: Whose Fault, Leaders or the Led?,” brought together politicians and media experts, among others.

Fubara, who was represented by a former deputy governor of the state, Engineer Tele Ikuru, said that as long as citizens and civil society organisations remained passive, bad governance would continue.

“There is a symbiotic relationship between leadership and followership.

“Leaders emerge from the same society they govern. If the people demand accountability, credible leaders are more likely to emerge.

“If citizens remain passive, bad governance will continue,” the governor said.

According to him, elected officials such as governors, legislators and other political appointees, had the mandate to serve the people and implement policies for national progress.

He said that people also had the power to influence leadership by making informed choices and holding leaders accountable for their actions.

Fubara said the country had battled several socio-political challenges, including economic stagnation , unemployment, corruption, over the years, saying it was time to change the narrative.

He decried electoral issues such as violence, rigging, and voter intimidation, saying the problems had constricted the space for the emergence of credible leaders.

Fubara also said weak public institutions, poor infrastructure, institutional failures had exacerbated governance challenges.

The governor frowned at tribal politics and lack of engagement of leaders, saying these had impacted the country’s democracy negatively.

“Instead of demanding good governance, some citizens support politicians based on ethnic or party loyalty rather than competence.

“Society often tolerates and even celebrates corrupt leaders, making accountability difficult.

“Many people do not actively engage with government policies, public hearings, or hold leaders accountable between elections,” he said.

Highlighting roles of the civil society and the media in exposing corruption and advocating for policy changes, Fubara said both leaders and citizens must take responsibility to address leadership challenges.

He said that public interest must be at the centre of public policy.

Calling for ethical leadership and improved electoral integrity, Fubara said that political parties must prioritise candidates with integrity and competence.

“In Nigeria, we must break the cycle of poor leadership and passive followership by fostering a culture of civic engagement and ethical governance.

“Foreigners will not fix Nigeria for us. Until Nigerians take full ownership of the country’s problems and solutions, the cycle of poor governance and underdevelopment will persist,” he said.

Corroborating, Senator Gbenga Daniel, a former governor of Ogun State, said most of the problems Nigeria was faced with had to do with poor leadership.

Also speaking, Prof. Akinyemi Onigbinde, Executive Secretary, Centre for Policy and Development Studies, said politicians must begin to play their game the right way to strengthen democracy.

Also, the Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Chief Gani Adams, said that bad leadership and followership had affected the country’s progress.

Adams also called for strong opposition, saying no good governance could come out of any democracy with weak opposition.

Chief Olabode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and Chairman of the occasion, while tracing the history of Nigeria’s socio-political challenges, commended the guest speaker and publisher for the theme of the lecture.

He said if those in authority didn’t initiate good policies, Nigeria would not experience good governance.

Retired Navy Captain Omoniyi Olubolade , former Military Administrator in Bayelsa and former Minister of Police Affairs, declared that the right thing must be done by leaders and the led to take Nigeria to the next level.

He said Nigerians “are smart people who can differentiate between good and bad leaders”.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Freedom Online, Mr. Gabriel Akinadewo, said he trusted the speakers to do justice to the topic.

He said there was the need to distinguish between political manoeuvering and substantive governance.

“Today, we confront a fundamental question: What do Nigerians expect between now and the 2027 presidential election?

“This inquiry leads us to examine the relationship between citizens and their elected representatives, and the accountability that binds them,” Akinadewo said.

Stating that Nigeria’s political and judicial systems required urgent reform, the publisher said, “As the world advances, Nigeria cannot afford stagnation.”

Prince Adewole Adebayo, the 2023 presidential candidate of the Social Democracy Party, SDP, and others also offered solutions to various challenges in the polity.

Eminent Nigerians, at the weekend, celebrated former Military Administrator, MILAD, of Bayelsa State, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (COO) during his 70th birthday held in Yenagoa, capital of the South-South state.

At the three-day event, thousands of Bayelsans trooped out to felicitate the Ipoti-Ekiti-born retired officer for laying the foundation for Bayelsa’s development between 1997 and 1998.

Bayelsa was carved out of Rivers State by the late General Sani Abacha and Olubolade was appointed the Military Administrator, MILAD, in June 1997.

It is generally believed that from June 27, 1997 to July 9, 1998 when he governed the South-South state, he laid a solid foundation for the development of the Ijaw-populated state that successive governors built on.

So, the three-day event in Yenagoa was an opportunity for thousands of residents of the axis to show their appreciation.

From the Exco Chamber of the Government House to the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Samson Siasia Sports Complex and thanksgiving church service, Olubolade and his wife, Mrs. Mopelola Olubolade, decked in various Ijaw attires, were the cynosure of all eyes.

The Chief of Staff, Government House, Yenagoa, Hon. Peter Pereotubo Akpe, Ph.D, ensured that all the events were memorable.

In fact, it was a pay-back time as former President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Dame Patience Jonathan; Governor Douye Diri, his wife, Dr. Gloria Diri; the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo; former Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha John Jonah (rtd); Amayanabo of Twon-Brass, King Alfred Diete-Spiff; Ibenanawei of Bomo Kingdom, King Joshua Igbugburu, and others led the series of tributes to celebrate Olubolade.

Also present at the event were the Hydrographer of the Nigerian Navy and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency, Rear Admiral Ayodeji Olugbode; Navy Captain Segun Noibi (rtd), Prof. Steve Azaiki, Olubolade’s first child and daughter, Oluwayemisi; her husband, Gabriel Akinadewo; Apostle Zilly Aggrey, Olubolade’s classmates at military school and Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, politicians, opinion leaders, members of Bayelsa State Cultural Troupe, entertainers and others.

In fact, throughout the event, Bayelsa literally stood still for the man described by Ewhrudjakpo as the COO (Chief Operating Officer) of Bayelsa “for laying a solid foundation for our development”.

All those present at the various events to mark the birthday of the septuagenarian, who was born on November 30, 1954, expressed their gratitude to him.

During the President Jonathan administration, Olubolade was also a Minister in three ministries – Special Duties, Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and Police Affairs.

READ ALSO: NSA commends Governor Sani on rescue of kidnap victims

He was commissioned into the Nigerian Navy in 1974, and attended courses including the Britannia Royal Naval College, UK in 1975, the Naval College of Engineering, India in 1979 and others.

During the birthday celebrations, all the projects he started and inaugurated during his tenure were highlighted in a special documentary and programme/brochure.

All venues used for the celebrations were also specially branded with various photographs of the septuagenarian.

Everywhere was colourful.

In a special tribute entitled

‘H.E. Olubolade At 70’, Diri said: “I am compelled to break the protocol of my annual leave to send warm greetings to a selfless leader, the former Military Administrator of Bayelsa State, His Excellency, Navy Captain Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade (Rtd.) on the occasion of his 70th birthday.

“I extend my warmest felicitations to this highly disciplined and revered former Military Administrator on this milestone of attaining a platinum jubilee.

“His commitment and leadership in laying the foundation of development in our dear State is inspiring, and we use this occasion of his birth to celebrate him, his life and times, and his selfless service to Bayelsa State.

“Once again, happy birthday to our leader and a worthy citizen of this great land of Bayelsa.

“We pray God continue to keep you in sound health.

“Nua sir! SDD”.

On his part, Ewhrudjakpo said: “Last night, I joined the family, friends and well-wishers of the former military administrator of our dear State Bayelsa at the DSP Alamieyeseigha Banquet Hall, Yenagoa.

“The gathering of state actors and top government officials to celebrate His Excellency, Navy Captain, Caleb Omoniyi Olubolade, was for his dedication to humanity and our dear State Bayelsa.

“The Chief Operating Officer COO, as I fondly call him, is a man of possibilities, integrity and character. His track record is distinguished and Bayelsa is what it is today because he extinguished the appetite for greed and corruption to nurture a new Bayelsa of his era even with the scarce resources.

“We are celebrating him because he is a sacrificial leader and one who we will refer to as an altruistic and audacious leader.

“Happy 70th Birthday Sir”.

Jonathan described Olubolade as a great man who Bayelsans are proud of.

Represented by his wife, Dame Patience, he lauded Olubolade for his development efforts in Bayelsa, which he said were still visible, saying he laid the foundation for the development of the 28-year-old state.

While wishing him many more celebrations in good health, Jonathan expressed appreciation to Diri for the peace and unity in the state being tonic to encourage development.

Dr. Gloria Diri noted that Bayelsans were happy with the role played by the celebrant in the development of the state, describing him as a son of the soil.

Responding, Olubolade said his love and appreciation for Bayelsa State made him to mark his 70th birthday in the state, describing Bayelsans as loving people.

He recalled working with Jonathan whom he described as result oriented, saying he learnt so much from him and other Bayelsans he worked with.

He expressed gratitude to Diri for celebrating him, saying he is a man of peace.

Olubolade also advised Nigerians to shun corruption, adding that he had adopted Bayelsa as his home.

He was given a standing ovation.

Responding to the applause, Olubolade said he was deeply grateful “for your presence at my 70th birthday celebration. Your love and friendship made this day unforgettable.

“I thank you for your thoughtful gifts, kind words and for taking the time to celebrate this special moment with my family”.

In his exhortation entitled “While there is life”, Apostle Zilly Aggrey said there is power in hope, thus the living should be hopeful.

He prayed for the celebrant and those present.

The event at the Samson Siasia Sports Complex, built by Olubolade, featured football match, athletics relays, cultural displays and choir ministration, amongst other activities.

Various branded gifts, food and drink were given to everybody present.

I had planned to attend the 8th Annual Conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP) in Lokoja, Kogi State from October 1 – 4.

In fact, I was a member of the Planning Committee, but something came up that I had to deal with in Lagos. So, I called our President, Maureen Chigbo , former President Dotun Samson Oladipo and a few others to notify them.

Of course, I followed the deliberations in Lokoja.

In September, I got an ‘invite’ from the Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG) to attend a three-in-one event in Lagos on October 4.

Tagged ‘Celebrating The Voices of Impact: Nigeria Prizes @ 20’, guests gathered to felicitate NLNG on the 35 years of its Incorporation, 25 years of Production and 20 years of the Nigeria Prizes for Literature and Science.

Clearly, NLNG is a reference point in credible corporate governance, not only in Nigeria but Africa. It is also known for its consistency in accountability and transparency.

So, Friday October 4 was triple celebrations for NLNG, a leading contributor to the Nigerian economy, turning its base in Bonny Island to ‘heaven on earth’.

When I got to the venue, I met a former President of the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE), Mrs. Funke Egbemode, who delivered the Keynote Address.

I also greeted Journalism Clinic founder, Taiwo Obe; PR expert and lecturer, Chido Nwakanma; Radio Now CEO, Kadaria Ahmed; BusinessDay Editor, Temitayo Fagbule; former presidential spokesperson, Tolu Ogunlesi; Okechukwu Uwaezuoke, Appolonia Adeyemi, Lilian Azuh, and others.

Anike-Ade Funke Treasure moderated, to the delight of all.

I had earlier greeted Mr. Andy Odeh, Mrs. Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, Mr. Elkanah Chawai and others from #TeamNLNG.

READ ALSO: INTIMATE AFFAIRS: Sperm donors are not necessarily fathers

After Mrs. Egbemode delivered her brilliant paper, Fire Side Chat and Q&A, it was the turn of Mrs. Palmer-Ikuku to announce ‘some surprises’.

She called my friend, Tony Okuyeme, who turned 60 same day to come out and stand behind a beautiful cake brought by NLNG for celebration. The band rendered melodious songs.

Then, it was time for ‘Special Presentations’.

NLNG, according to her, ‘wants to recognise and celebrate’ some media stakeholders.

I was editing some stories on my phone when I heard ‘Gabriel Akinadewo’.

I still don’t know why I was chosen for the award but I believe the hard work of our media team in Freedom Online (www.freedomonline.com.ng) was the precursor.

Then, people started clapping.

I looked up, not really sure what was happening. She called my name again as the winner of the ‘Most Versatile Journalist’ Award.

Honestly, I was, according to Mrs. Egbemode, ‘pleasantly shocked’.

I sat for about five seconds, amazed, astonished, surprised.

Then, Mrs. Egbemode said ‘ e lo gba award yin o’ (Go and collect your award).

As I was walking to the podium, I told her “This is an ambush”.

She started laughing.

I told Mrs. Palmer Ikuku same.

Mr. Odeh eventually presented the award and advised me: “Please, be consistent in what you do”.

Then, people started coming around to congratulate me.

Other winners were Vanguard Correspondent, Mrs Prisca Sam-Duru (NLNG One-Off Prize for the Voices of Impact behind the Nigeria Prizes); Mr Terh Agbedeh (the most Consistent); Mrs Chidinma Agwu (the most Punctual) and Mr Sopuruchi Onwuka (the most Engaging).

As people were congratulating me, one of my friends jokingly called me ‘Alhaji Gabriel’, apparently referring to my cap.

Let me ‘digress’ a bit.

I remember in June 2021, I was in Abuja with Dotun Oladipo, Pastor Joshua Oluseyi Fasugba

and others for a media event when I saw the cap and bought it.

I used this ‘head covering’ when I attended a wedding in Lagos same month.

Then, I ‘forgot it’ in my wardrobe until two months ago when I ‘commandeered’ and gave it to a dry cleaner.

I used it a few weeks ago at a social event in Lagos (before leaving the house, my wife laughed and asked ‘are you now a politician?’) and some of my friends at the event – Temitope Ajayi , Sakibu Olokojobi , Dipo Kehinde, Mojeed Jamiu , Israel Jaiye Opayemi, Biodun Durojaiye, Habib Aruna , Azuh Arinze , Bisi Oladele – jokingly called me ‘Alhaji’. In fact, Biodun Durojaiye said that was the first time he saw me wearing a cap, “apart from when you are in church”.

When Habib Aruna celebrated his 60th birthday on September 28, I was there, wearing the cap. Iheanacho Nwosu , Bam Olugbenga Odugbesan , Steve Ayorinde, Ramon Nasir , Ayodele Aminu, Jide Ajani, Olusola Fabiyi and others, said same.

I think I should use the cap frequently now to complete my ‘Nigerianness dress code’.

Anyway, I want to sincerely thank NLNG for this award.

All guests at the venue received gifts of high-quality Nigerian wax prints and some communication gadgets.

While leaving, I told myself: ‘To achieve anything in life, consistency is key’.

I still don’t know why I was chosen for the award but I believe the hard work of our media team in Freedom Online (www.freedomonline.com.ng) was the precursor.

And that is the NLNG Magic.

Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa of Ondo State has urged Nigerians to pray for peace in the country because “anywhere there is peace, there will be development”.

He also praised members of Motailatu Church of God, MCG, over what he described as the support extended to his administration since he became the governor of the Sunshine State.

The Governor spoke on Sunday in Ondo City, during the Diamond Jubilee Celebration of the church.

The spiritual event, held at the International Headquarters of the church, Saint Adekahunsi Cathedral, Oke-Iwosan, Ondo City, was witnessed by several Ondo chiefs, leaders of Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, Organisation of African Instituted Churches, OAIC, and others.

The Chairman was a prominent Ondo leader and educationist, Chief Ade Iluyemi, who was supported by his wife and two-term Commissioner, Chief (Mrs.) Funke Iluyemi.

Aiyedatiwa described the founder of the church, Saint Isaiah M. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu), as a true man of God, whose impacts in propagating the word in the minds of his children and millions of people since he founded the church in 1964 would remain indelible forever.

Also, a former Commissioner in the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, Dr. Benson Enikuomehin, urged Nigerian leaders to be patriotic so that the people would enjoy dividends of democracy.

Aiyedatiwa, represented by his Chief Press Secretary, Prince Ebenezer Adeniyan, while congratulating members over the 60-year celebration, enjoined them to continue in praying for more peace and harmony to continue to take its full stand in Ondo State and Nigeria as a whole.

The Governor equally solicited for more supports from members of the church worldwide on his administration and urged them to embark on fervent prayer to ensure the success of the forthcoming gubernatorial election in Ondo State slated to hold in November.

Aiyedatiwa promised that his administration would continue to do more apparently to better the lots of the people of Ondo State.

He used the occasion to mention several developmental projects and efforts embarked upon since he assumed office in December.

Earlier, in his sermon, the Chairman, Board of Trustees, BoT, of the church, Senior Superintendent Gabriel F. Akinadewo (Omo Jesu II), urged people of the country to continue looking up to God to assist Nigeria.

In the sermon entitled: “It is never too late for God Almighty to help”, the cleric stressed the need for leaders and the led in the country to do the right thing at the appropriate time.

The Cleric, who quoted several passages from the Holy Bible, stressed the need for Christians to embark on spiritual warfare and prayers, saying “through this, Nigeria will overcome its present challenges, especially the issue of insecurity in some parts of the country”.

Lamenting what he called incessant kidnapping and other insecurity challenges in the country, he urged the people to continue to pray fervently and equally stressed the need for governments – Federal, states and councils – to do the right thing at the right time.

“Government should do the right thing in dealing with bandits who are terrorising the country. We have three (Gs) – God, Government and Gun. God, our Creator, has given the Government the power to deal with evil, using the instrumentality of the machinery of state. As long as you are in this territory, the government has the power to deal with enemies of state”, he stated.

Speaking on the Diamond Jubilee Celebration, Akinadewo went down memory lane when his late father, Isaiah MoyinOlorun Akinadewo, founded the church in Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State in 1964 and later moved to Ondo town in 1977 “where he officially established the Church in 1981 at Oke-Iwosan, Ondo City which later became the International Headquarters of the Church”.

He also explained that the Church had made tremendous achievements, touching the lives of people in various communities.

The celebration featured anniversary thanksgiving, donations, prayers and songs ministration by the church choristers from various parishes.
