President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Monday in Abuja, stated that his administration would continue to honour former President Muhammadu Buhari by sustaining his legacies of purposeful leadership, discipline, integrity, and the belief that public office is a trust, not a windfall.

President Tinubu made this commitment at the State House Conference Centre during the unveiling and public presentation of the book, From Soldier to Statesman – The Legacy of Muhammadu Buhari, authored by Dr Charles Omole.

He said the book offerred Nigerians the opportunity to learn from President Buhari, and affirmed that the greatest honour to bestow on the late president was to sustain his legacies.

“This book reinforces the public memory. It outlines achievements and flaws, as all honest histories should. It should motivate future leaders to learn lessons rather than repeat slogans.”

He noted that Buhari’s legacy gained greater meaning when those who followed chose to continue what he started.

“That is my duty, and I pledge that today,” the president stated.

President Tinubu chronicled his long-standing political relationship with President Buhari, describing him as a brother, friend, and political partner with whom he shared a journey through challenging times.

“Together, we built a broad coalition, campaigned across the country, and proved that Nigeria could chart a new course. Our movement united diverse interests and achieved a historic victory in 2015 by unseating an incumbent president, thus reshaping Nigeria’s political landscape. The coalition we built in 2014 is now the fastest-growing political party in Africa today. Its growth continues.

“Our political journey together taught me that cooperation across differences is not weakness; it is wisdom. Nation-building demands that we compete passionately and govern responsibly. President Buhari understood that the contest ends when the oath begins. In his memory, let us keep our politics honourable and our governance focused on results.

“True nation-building is the work not just of leaders but of the entire citizenry,” he added.

The president commended the author, Dr Charles Omole, for his scholarly efforts in writing the 600-page book.

Governor of Katsina State, Dikko Umaru Radda, applauded President Tinubu for standing by the Buhari family and the state following the demise of the former president, stating that Muhammadu Buhari epitomised discipline, prudence, patriotism and purposeful leadership.

Author and reviewer of the book, Dr Charles Omole, said the biography chronicled the life and times of President Buhari and provided answers to several questions.

He explained that the writing involved speaking with people who witnessed Buhari’s birth and his death.

Former Service Chiefs and the Inspector General of Police who served under President Buhari testified to his self-discipline, integrity, and rare sense of duty.

Sharing his own experiences, Chairman/CEO of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (Rtd) enumerated several legacies of President Buhari, describing him as a disciplined officer who took a keen interest in his subordinates.

“Let me recall one important aspect of his character, which is encouraging his subordinates and appointees. The man whose legacy we celebrate today was a man of honour, a man of character, a man of integrity and a man of principle.

“An officer and a gentleman. A man who loved the masses and the masses loved him back. A soldier who fought for the territorial integrity of Nigeria,” Gen. Marwa stated.

Former Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Isiaka Amao, lauded the late President’s commitment to national service, both as a soldier and as a civilian president, saying: “Serving under him as Chief of Air Staff during a period of existential security challenges, I observed that he was not merely a Commander-in-Chief issuing orders but a statesman who understood that military powers must always serve democratic governance.”

Yusuf Magaji Bichi, former Director General of the Department of State Services under President Buhari, commended President Tinubu for continuing the legacies of commitment, purposeful leadership, democratic governance, and free and fair elections laid down by President Buhari, saying, “President Buhari will never rig an election.”

Vice Admiral Awwal Zubairu Gambo (Rtd), Chief of the Naval Staff under President Buhari’s administration, highlighted the late President’s concern for national maritime security and in the Gulf of Guinea, stating that, under President Buhari, “national security was significantly enhanced through strategic investment and strong leadership.”

Former IGP, Mohammed Abubakar, praised the former president for his integrity and commitment to the nation’s internal security.

“Under his administration, the Nigerian Police witnessed the most decisive reforms in recent decades. Late President Buhari believed that the modern police force must be anchored on professionalism, accountability and operational efficacy,” the former IGP said.

Hadiza Nana Buhari thanked all guests on behalf of the Buhari family.

She expressed gratitude to President Tinubu for his support in their time of grief.

“We sincerely thank Mr President for his dedication to completing the National Armed Forces PTSD Centre Project in Abuja, which President Buhari started. This is a vital facility initiated by the Defence and Police Officers’ Wives Association, DEPOWA”.

She urged Nigerians to learn from her father’s legacy and build a system of patience and integrity that can stand the test of time.

The President of The Gambia, Adama Barrow; Nigeria’s First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu; Governors of Kaduna, Jigawa, Plateau, Benue, and Borno States; the Deputy Governor of Kebbi State; and the Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, attended the event.

The family of late President Buhari, led by his widow, Aisha; the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; former aides of the late president; the wife of the Vice President, Nana Shettima; traditional rulers, including the Sultan of Sokoto and the Olu of Warri, also attended the event.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu paid a solidarity visit to the Kaduna residence of Nigeria’s late president, Muhammadu Buhari, on Friday, assuring the Buhari family of upholding the late leader’s legacies.

Tinubu was received by Buhari’s widow, Aisha, her eldest son, Yusuf, and other relatives and associates of the deceased leader.

President Tinubu said the family was not alone in grief.

“We are just here to assure you that we share in your grief, we share in your pain.

”A loss in flesh is not a loss in the spirit, and the spirit that he left with us is a spirit of hard work, dedication, patriotism and honesty, and we are doing that.

“We assure you and the entire family that we will continue with our leader’s legacy, the mark he made for Nigeria. We will continue on the path of honesty, integrity, and great character that he imbued in us.

“May God help Nigeria, keep us united and together in the promised land,” the president said.

In an emotional voice, Aisha Buhari thanked the president and his government for supporting the family in their grief.

She said the visit by the president and his delegation was a source of consolation.

“I would like to use this medium to thank you once again, the first lady, the wife of the Vice President, for standing by me and my family,” she said.

Aisha said her late husband stood for honesty, integrity and justice, urging Nigerians to emulate his virtues.

“I would like to pray for Nigeria, for peace to reign, for unity of the country, and for you, President Tinubu, to carry on with my late husband’s legacy of honesty, integrity, tolerance, accountability, and justice.”

The president was accompanied to the residence by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, and the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas.

The governors of Kwara, Abdulrahman AbdulRazaq; Yobe, Mai Mala Buni; Borno, Babagana Zulum; and Sokoto, Ahmed Aliyu, were part of the presidential entourage.

The president was also accompanied by Wale Edun, the Minister of Finance; Atiku Bagudu, the minister of Budget and Planning; Bello Matawalle, the Minister of State for Defence; and Nuhu Ribadu, the National Security Adviser.

Earlier, President Tinubu graced the wedding of Nasirudeen Abdulaziz Yari, son of Senator Abdulaziz Yari, who represents Zamfara West.

Nasirudeen tied the knot with Safiyya Shehu Idris at the historic Sultan Bello Mosque in the Kaduna metropolis.

President Tinubu, accompanied by senior government officials, received the groom’s hand-in-marriage on behalf of the Yari family after the bride’s representative, Ibrahim Ashiru, confirmed the payment of the N1 million dowry.

The president commended both families for upholding noble traditions and encouraged the young couple to build their home on faith, love, and mutual respect.

The colourful occasion, which drew dignitaries from across the country, including traditional rulers, business leaders and politicians, was marked by prayers for the president and the nation by renowned cleric Sheikh Abdullahi Bala Lau and the officiating Chief Imam of the mosque, Dr Muhammad Suleiman.

“Oga, I’m sorry. That’s how God wants it. He is dead.”

That was the shattering message I received at about 4 p.m on Sunday 13 July, 2025 breaking the sad news of the passage of former President Muhammadu Buhari. It was most unexpected.

I had been on the trail of those at the bedside of the former President for days, as we compared notes on the day I was to visit him in London. Each time, they advised that I tarry a while for an auspicious time for the visit.

The news brought to a close, the decades of my relationship with former President Buhari, a relationship I will cherish until I breathe my last.

In 2006, when I first ventured to run for the office of Governor of Ogun State, the powers that-be placed various obstacles in my path. General Buhari came through at a time when all hopes were lost.

He offered me the platform of his All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and while virtually all the VIPs invited for the declaration of my ambition chickened out in the face of State intimidation. General Buhari put his life on the line, followed me to the declaration event at Ake Palace, Abeokuta, and, indeed volunteered they should kill both of us, if it came to that

In my years of relationship with him, I came to know him as a man of spartan discipline. His use of time, words and resources were always measured. As a leader, he was ever driven by the care of the poor, the underprivileged, the underserved in our society.

Every policy was measured with a prism of how it would affect the poor. As a leader, he prevented his family from the abuse of government patronage. His personal discipline was not a resource for personal aggrandisement or reputation-building. It was borne out of conviction.

Buhari’s time in government, first as a Military Head of State and secondly as a democratically elected civilian President, was devoted to transforming Nigeria into a disciplined, orderly and progressive country in which the poor and weak are protected.

His vision for infrastructure development remain unparalleled. He ran the most ambitious and extensive social intervention policy designed to take the poorest of the poor out of the scourge of poverty. “Nigerians will miss me”, he said repeatedly after office.

READ ALSO: Mr President, Aro’s wife was raped, By Funke Egbemode

As it is with all governments, Buhari’s immense contributions to Nigeria would be more appreciated as Nigerians experience successive governments.

The outpouring of love and emotions since the announcement of his death are indicative that in the days and years ahead, Nigerians will accord President Buhari the reverence he deserves as a disciplined, incorruptible and visionary leader.

It is true that one of the most misunderstood persons that ever passed through the Nigerian landscape, yet loved unconditionally by people who appreciated honest leadership, was former President Buhari.

Have we also had time to dimension why in spite of the hesitations that some nursed against him, his followers remained solidly with and behind him till he passed on?

That’s because the Buhari you probably thought you knew was not the same man that his followers were willing to take a bullet for till he breathed his last.

Some years ago, I had cause to take him on over an issue. It was family-related. I was stunned to learn about his thinking and why he embraced a rigid position as a father and leader.

For him, being seemingly hard on the family while in office was a deliberate choice to insulate them from the culture of corruption in the corridors of power and as much protect his own hard-built reputation, which had thrived on his disdain for sleaze.

My love and respect for President Buhari have remained abiding over the years, even though our relationship has had its own test of time. As a Yoruba man, one imbued with decency and thorough upbringing; one who can distinguish between good and evil and between right and wrong, it is ungodly to pay good with evil. Buhari was very good to me.

The circumstances under which my path and his crossed and how he risked everything to stand by me, even if that was all he ever did, will never be obliterated from my memory and it remains something I’d hold dear till I breathe my last. Although I have reserved some of these stories and more for my memoire.

I’ll continue to cherish our relationship because it meant everything to me. My only regret, however, is that I didn’t get to see him before he shut down and transited.

Behind his steely exterior is a smile of peace; a heart of gold; a milk of kindness, and a passion for the poor. Even with his straight and serious stare, only a few comedians could compete with his huge sense of humour. He was simple in every sense of the word, and this was reflected in his everyday life.

Doing a quick run of his programmes in my head for eight years, I could not but conclude that posterity would be very kind and generous to him, his inadequacies notwithstanding. From his infrastructure renewal to enabling policies and measured leadership, particularly in times of crisis, Buhari has finished his own race, and he finished well.

For us, in Ogun State, we will remain eternally grateful to him for his kindness to us, including the many infrastructure upgrades and renewals conceded to the state. I can also say the same for the South West as a geo-political zone.

He was pro-development, national growth, unity, and one Nigeria. His approach might be different. His goal remained the same throughout his reign for the collective good, and even as a private citizen,

As I conclude these reminiscences of some of the quick takes about a man, who meant a lot to my family and I, I recall with mixed feelings how he’d enthuse ecstatically, “Oh my good God” each time something excited him so much that it made him laugh really hard.

I’ll continue to cherish our relationship because it meant everything to me. My only regret, however, is that I didn’t get to see him before he shut down and transited.

My dear father, since it has pleased the Almighty Allah to take you home and give you an enduring rest, as you are laid to mother earth today, I and my family will continue to pray for you and will do our best possible to making ensure that none of the things you left behind goes out of line. Your legacy will continue to speak for you now and in the hereafter.

My condolences to his widow, Aisha Buhari and his children; his surviving elder sister, Hajia Rakiya and his nephew, Baba Mamman Daura, and the entire Buhari family.

Goodnight, a man of peace, honour, and integrity!

*Amosun, a former governor of Ogun State, was also a senator for Ogun Central Senatorial district.

She also handed over the seal of the African First Ladies Peace Mission to the incoming First Lady, being the chief host of all the spouses of the African heads of state.

Mrs Buhari expressed confidence in the ability of the incoming First Lady to deliver on the task ahead.

The event signalled the formal transition of official engagements in the Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“As you are all aware the role of the First Lady is unconstitutional, but we enjoy the goodwill of the citizens in order to carry out some basic things, like humanitarian activities.

“We partner with a lot of Non-Governmental Organisations in order to help our citizens, and I have enjoyed that goodwill for the last eight years.

“So, I have prepared a handover, just to guide you, and see the NGOs that we have worked with,” Mrs Buhari said.

Responding, Mrs Oluremi Tinubu appreciated the outgoing First Lady for exhibiting a high sense of leadership and dexterity in handling the affairs of her office.

“We are very humbled by what you have done, you have exhibited great leadership and dexterity in the way you do things.

“I want to sincerely thank you from the bottom of my heart because you don’t come into this role and say you know it all.

“I know I served many years ago as Governor’s wife for eight years, but now things have changed and are being done differently. I have been in the legislative arm for 12 years now.

“We promise you that you will be proud of the work we will do,” she said.

In same vein, Mrs Buhari also received in audience the Association of Spouses of Nigerian Ambassadors, ASNA, led by the wife of Nigerian Ambassador to Burundi, Mrs Udo Onyeagba, who were at the State House to express their support to the First Lady.

To mark his 71st birthday, President-elect Asíwájú Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed that special prayers and thanksgiving service be held on Wednesday March 29, 2023, instead of the yearly birthday colloquium.

The special prayers will be held in Lagos and in other parts of the country.

A statement from his office on Monday indicated that for the main event in Lagos, special prayers will be offered at the Central Mosque in each of the five divisions in the state including the Central Mosque, Alausa, Ikeja.

During the sessions, special prayers will be offered for the peace, unity and progress of Nigeria.

Also to receive prayers among others are President Muhammadu Buhari and First Lady Aisha Buhari, President-elect Tinubu and his wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, Vice President-elect Senator Kashim Shettima and Hajia Nana Shettima, Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu, other state governors as well as members of National and State Houses of Assembly.

According to an announcement by the organisers of the prayer sessions issued by Imam Akeem Kosoko, the session at Alausa Central Mosque will begin at 10 a.m. on Wednesday and will include delivery of sermons and reading from the Holy Quran.

This year will be the third in recent times the birthday colloquium will not hold in deference to developments in the country.

In 2020, the 12th edition of the colloquium marking Asíwájú’s 68th birthday was put off to empathize with those who lost their lives or affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

And last year, the birthday symposium was also called off by Asíwájú Tinubu right at the venue of the event when news emerged of the terror attack on the Abuja-Kaduna train in which several persons died and many others abducted.

The Eko Hotel and Suites, Lagos venue was already filled to capacity with dignitaries to celebrate the birthday when Asíwájú took to the podium to announce the cancellation of the event.

The former governor of Lagos State had said it would not be proper for him as a statesman to be celebrating when such a tragedy had befallen the nation.

“For me to be here celebrating, dancing and enjoying myself, does not speak of me as a senior citizen of this country. I asked that the cleric should rather engage in prayers. This event should not be holding,” Tinubu had said on the occasion.

This year, the president-elect said the date, which falls within the holy month of Ramadan, should be dedicated to prayers and seeking God’s guidance for him and the country as he prepares to take the reins of leadership.

President Muhammadu Buhari has appointed a Deputy Commissioner of Police, Aliyu Musa, as his Chief Personal Security Officer, CPSO.

He replaces Commissioner of Police, CP, Abdulkarim Dauda, who has been redeployed.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Mallam Garba Shehu, made the announcement on Monday.

His words: “Musa’s appointment follows the redeployment of his predecessor, Commissioner of Police (CP) Abdulkarim Dauda.”

According to him, “Musa, from Nigerian Police Force Zone 5, Benin City, as his last station, hails from Niger State.”

It would be recalled that the president ordered a thorough investigation into an alleged security breach at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, involving his aides and those of his wife, Aisha.

The breach was by a security aide who shot at the Presidential Villa.

Following the breach, security aides of the First Lady, Aisha, were said to have been arrested on the order of the Chief Security Officer of the president.

The cause of the problem, it was gathered, was that security aides of the First Lady tried to force Yusuf Sabiu, an aide of the president, out of the Villa because he did not self-isolate when he returned to Abuja from Lagos.

Nigeria’s First Lady, Aisha Muhammadu Buhari, has commended the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA, for its contribution to peace, security, socio-economic and political development of Nigeria.

She spoke at the formal opening of the Council’s General Assembly/NEC Meeting, which held at the National Mosque on Friday, with a theme, “Islam and National Development.”

Mrs. Buhari said the decisions of the Council needed to be converted into realistic template for practice by Muslims in the country.

She called on the Muslim Ummah to embrace the decisions of the assembly, “especially those related to personal affairs and those that guide the relationship between them and members of other faiths as a tool for the promotion of peaceful coexistence in the country.”

She equally called on political leaders to do more with a view to improving the lives of citizens through the provision of basic amenities as a catalyst for development.

Vice President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo in a goodwill message identified NSCIA as a worthy intermediary between government and Nigerian Muslims on the one hand and between Muslims and members of other faiths on the other, saying the council exhibited great leadership in galvanising Muslims despite the differences amongst sects.

He urged all religious leaders not to remain silent in the face bigotry anywhere.

He also reiterated the call made by the First Lady earlier that political leaders should show deep compassion over the people they lead and live up to the commitments to they swore to uphold.

Earlier, the President-General of NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, in his message said leaders must be accountable to the led and must demonstrate good example of humility and service.

He advised leaders to do more on education, particularly to address the Almajiri System and girl-child education.

He commended the First Lady for the effort she was making to improve the lot of the common Nigerians through the various humanitarian activities of Future Assured Programme.

He said her passion had led to opening up of discussion with the Council on the issue of divorce, which is becoming rampant and which has an impact on the welfare and well-being of children.

Dr. Isa Ibrahim Pantami, Minister of Communication and Digital Economy, delivered a paper titled “The nexus between Islam and National Development”, where he emphasized that Islam was all about development.
