The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, FUNAAB, has taken a bold step toward building a cyber-aware academic community, with students emerging as the driving force behind a new campus-wide digital safety movement.

At the heart of this shift is the unveiling of FUNAAB CyberTitans—a student-led cybersecurity network designed to promote peer-to-peer education and connect the university to a growing national pipeline of future cyber professionals.

The initiative, championed by cybersecurity scholar, Prof. S. A. Onashoga, was the highlight of a two-day Campus-wide Cybersecurity Awareness Initiative held recently.

Rather than a conventional conference, the programme transformed the campus into an active learning space.

Student volunteers moved through hostels, lecture areas, and social hubs, engaging colleagues and staff in real-time conversations about phishing scams, password vulnerabilities, and one-time password (OTP) risks—turning abstract threats into everyday realities.

The campaign culminated in a packed grand finale at the COLCOMPS Auditorium, themed “Pause, Prevent, Protect for a Cyber Safe Culture.”

Setting the tone, Prof. Onashoga described cybersecurity as “the oxygen of our digital lives,” underscoring the urgency of behavioural change in an era where human error remains the weakest link.

Reinforcing the academic backbone of the field, Prof. A. A. Agboola challenged students to see mathematics as the engine of cybersecurity, while Prof. A. S. Sodiya urged a strategic mindset: understanding threats, assets, and response actions.

From an institutional standpoint, Dr. Mathew Wheto praised the student-led approach, signaling stronger backing for future editions.

Delivering the keynote virtually, Dr. Oluyomi Asogbon emphasized that most cyber breaches stem from human actions, not system failures—making awareness campaigns like this critical to national digital resilience.

One of the event’s standout moments was a student-performed playlet dramatizing OTP compromise, blending humour with education and making cybersecurity risks more relatable to everyday users.

For participants, the experience went beyond awareness.

Student coordinator described it as a turning point in leadership and technical purpose, while many attendees said the initiative reframed cybersecurity as practical, accessible, and essential.

The unveiling of CyberTitans marks FUNAAB’s entry into a broader national ecosystem of campus-based cybersecurity advocates—positioning students not just as learners, but as frontline defenders of digital safety.

Closing the programme, Prof. Onashoga captured its significance: “We didn’t just launch a group—we ignited a culture.”

Former Vice President of Nigeria and a frontline leader of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, has called on members of the PDP in Ondo State to mobilize overwhelming support for the victory of the party in the governorship election coming up on Saturday.

The former Vice President, in a press statement signed by his media adviser, Paul Ibe, on Tuesday, noted that the PDP flag bearer in the election, Agboola Ajayi, was a consummate politician who had what it took to not only galvanize the party to victory in the election but also improve the lots of the people of the state.

“The governorship election that is coming up in Ondo State this Saturday presents an opportunity for the people of Ondo State to elevate the condition of the state into increased prosperity.

“The APC, as it has been made clear to everyone, is a grossly unpopular party which does not have the interest of the people as a core objective.

“The people of Ondo State have an opportunity in Hon. Ajayi of the PDP to tell the APC that enough is enough.

READ ALSO: Remembrance day: Tinubu honours Ogoni martyrs

“As leaders of the party, we shall provide all necessary support to ensure that the APC is not allowed to repress the wishes of the electorate in this election.

“This is also a sound warning to all election management officials and volunteers that the PDP will stand firmly against any malpractice in the Ondo governorship election,” Atiku added.

The former vice president, however, called on the people of Ondo State to come out in large numbers to cast their ballot and also make sure that their ballots count.

“When the tide is high, it becomes too big to rig. The people of Ondo State are known for their forthrightness, and this particular election calls for eternal vigilance,” Atiku noted.

A 13 years old programmer, Joshua Agboola, has emerged the youngest Certified Amazon Web Services Developer Associate in Africa.

Agboola achieved the feat after a gruelling two-hour examination that tested his skills and knowledge in deploying, troubleshooting, and development on the AWS cloud platform.

Cloud services are infrastructure, platforms, or software that are hosted by third-party providers and made available to users through the internet.

Agboola, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Lagos on Sunday said he was inspired to achieve the feat because of his outstanding performance in his AWS Certified Cloud Practitioner examination earlier in the year.

He said that as a result, he was encouraged by his father to take his pursuit of a cloud career further by sitting for the next level certification.

Agboola said that though he had developed an interest in DevOps, the popular progression was to go for the Solutions Architect Associate certification, and this was what he did.

“I was initially preparing for the Solutions Architect Associate certification which is the next certification most people take in their AWS cloud journey, but had a change of mind for a tougher developer associate certification due to encouragement from an older friend programmer.

‘’The light bulb went up in my head, and I began studying the next day.

‘’The possibility of clinching the title of the youngest Developer Associate in the world, which is an equivalent of a world record in the cloud space, also became a strong motivation for me,’’ he said.

According to him, I prepared for the test by studying for about two to five hours daily for about six weeks.

Agboola said the first two weeks of study was to appreciate the core concepts of the course and also gain knowledge of all the topics that could come up in the exam.

According to him, “this turned part of study time into revision time and had to cover the content of the Solutions Architect course earlier which gladdens me because my practising has paid off.”

The 13-year-old internet sensation said his achievement in the cloud space had got noticed, saying “A tech. company in Lagos has already offered to provide me with further technical mentorship.”

He dedicated his achievement to young people who wish to build a career in technology while encouraging the young ones to go for their dreams.

According to Amazon, getting certified as an AWS Developer Associate showcases knowledge and understanding of core AWS services, and proficiency in developing, deploying, and debugging cloud-based applications.

Amazon said the organisations with AWS certified developers had the assurance of having the right talent to give them a competitive advantage and ensure stakeholders and customers satisfaction.

“Preparing for and attaining this certification gives certified individuals more confidence and credibility,” it added.

Earlier, Agboola had taken and passed the AWS Cloud Practitioner certification, becoming the youngest in Africa to do so.

Likewise, on July 17, 2023, he sat for the AWS Solutions Architect Associate examination and passed with flying colours which is another first for Africa.

Olabisi Onabanjo University, OOU, Ago-Iwoye, on Thursday matriculated 7,000 fresh students into various programmes for the 2021/2022 academic session.

The students, admitted across the Colleges, Faculties and Departments of the University, took the Oath of Allegiance at the matriculation ceremony held in the school premises.

Addressing the matriculants, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ayodeji Agboola, congratulated them for scaling the hurdles of qualifying examinations and other prerequisites for gaining admission into the university.

The Vice-Chancellor also lauded the parents and guardians of the students for providing the support and logistics to secure the admission.

He urged them to regularly monitor their wards and their academic performances.

Agboola urged the students to abide by the rules and regulations guiding the operations of the institution.

He said that such compliance would go a long way in moulding them into what they dreamt of becoming in life.

The Vice-Chancellor said that the matriculation marked the beginning of a new journey for the students.

He warned them against getting involved in cultism, examination malpractice or other forms of social vices that could bring the university into disrepute.

READ ALSO: OOU gets new Vice Chancellor

“I want to specially congratulate you students because this is the first matriculation I will be conducting as the Vice-Chancellor of this university and by the grace of God, I will see you through in the next five years.

“I like to congratulate you, once again, for the opportunity to be among those admitted to fill the university’s current admission quota of 7,000 out of over 20,000 candidates who took part in the Post UTME screening test for the session.

“Very importantly too, now that we are in the electioneering period as a nation, under no circumstances should you allow yourself to be used for any purpose that would bring the name of the university into disrepute.

“Say no to political violence or thuggery. You are more precious than that, because the great future of this country lies in your hands,” he said.

The Vice-Chancellor stressed the need for the students to attend lectures regularly and do their assignments, adding that they must study very well and prepare adequately for their examinations.

Agboola assured the matriculants that OOU had been adequately positioned to prepare its students to meet the demands and challenges of the 21st century as prospective graduates.

Other principal officers of the university, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Charles Adekoya; the Registrar, Mr Femi Ogunwomoju; Librarian, Dr Adebambo Oduwole; and Bursar, Mr Semiu Makinde, were in attendance.

The Registrar, Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, was represented by the Ogun State Coordinator of the board, Mr Abdulhameed Hakeem, at the ceremony.
