The move is an obvious continuation of the bid to emerge the next governor of the state in the election scheduled for October 10.

Ajayi recently left the All Progressives Congress, APC, for the PDP where he contested the governorship primary.

He, however, lost to Eyitayo Jegede.

Ajayi confirmed his defection to the ZLP on his Twitter handle.

His tweets read: “Today 10th August 2020, I Resign my membership from the People’s Democratic Party to join Zenith Labour Party to further my aspirations.

“I appreciate the National Leadership and members of the party for their warm reception and acceptance in the short period I rejoined the party.”

The IGP’s directive is contained in a memo addressed to the police commissioner through the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Operations, Force headquarters Abuja on Monday.

Men of the Nigeria Police attached to the deputy governor were withdrawn after he had defected to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.

Ajayi had last Wednesday, cried out that his life was in danger when policemen attached to his office were withdrawn on the orders of the Commissioner of Police in the state.

The memo with Ref. No CB: 2002/DOPS/FHQ/ABJ/VOL/77/168 was signed on behalf of the IGP through Austine Agbonlahor, Assistant Inspector-General of Police.

The Ondo State deputy governor, who accused the Commissioner of Police of working on the instructions of Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu to withdraw the officers, had for a while, been having running battle with him.

Ajayi had engaged in a confrontation with the police at the Government House following the alleged refusal of the latter to allow him to leave the premises allegedly on the orders of the governor.

Meanwhile, the deputy governor had in a statement released by his media aide, Mr Babatope Okeowo, lauded the integrity and courage displayed by the majority of the lawmakers for shunning all alleged entreaties, inducement and intimidation to impeach him.

The statement also urged lawmakers to also shun another latest plan to move the next meeting of the impeachment plot to a private hotel in Akure.

Ajayi called on the security agents and the people of the state to be vigilant of the latest moves by the governor to illegally remove him at all cost for no other reason than the exercise of his constitutional right of freedom of association.

All efforts to speak with the state Commissioner for Information, Donald Ojogo, failed as he could not be contacted for comments.

The deputy governor resigned his membership at his Ward 2 in Apoi, Ese Odo Local Government Area of the state.

He is expected to officially defect to the PDP on Monday at the party’s secretariat in Akure.

The relationship between Ajayi and Governor Oluwarotimi Akeredolu has become frosty over the last couple of months.

His resignation from APC put an end to the speculation trailing his planned defection.

Ajayi, in his letter of resignation, thanked the APC in the state for the opportunity to serve and wished the party well in its future endeavours.

Fielding questions from  newsmen, Ajayi said: “I just tendered my resignation as a member of the APC to the chairman of this ward and also to the chairman of Ese-Odo APC.

“Both of them are here, we pray that by the grace of God, Apoi Ward 2 will witness more development and progress.”

Ondo State governorship election will come up on October 10.
