The Police Command in Oyo State has rescued a United States of America-based Nigerian medical doctor, Dr Afolabi, from being mobbed over alleged kidnapping.

The Police Public Relations Officer in Oyo State, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, said that the incident occurred on Monday at 2:30 p.m. on the Ologuneru Road in Ibadan.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Wednesday in Ibadan, Olayinka said that the mob was about to set the doctor ablaze when the police team arrived.

He said that the doctor’s Lexus RX 330 SUV was set ablaze by the mob.

According to Olayinka, the victim is currently receiving medical attention at the Police Medical Services and is responding to treatment.

Olayinka said that the two young girls, Deborah, 15 and Rebecca, 12, who the doctor was alleged to have kidnapped, found inside his vehicle, are currently in police protective custody.

Olayinka said preliminary investigation revealed that Afolabi, a medical doctor practising in the United States of America, wasn’t a kidnapper as falsely alleged in several misleading social media reports currently in circulation.

The PPRO said that further findings showed that the two girls found inside Afolabi’s vehicle were legally taken from one Mrs Idowu Abimbola in Eleyele Area of Ibadan.

Olayinka explained that the girls were to be delivered to Afolabi’s mother for the purpose of assisting with household chores.

“In the course of investigation, Mrs. Idowu Abimbola was invited to the station where she confirmed the arrangement, while the two girls equally corroborated the account and related freely with the said woman, thereby dispelling the suspicion of abduction.

“Further investigation revealed that the misunderstanding which triggered the false kidnapping alarm began when Dr. Afolabi attempted to gain access through the Polytechnic Ibadan gate and was stopped by a security guard for routine vehicle inspection.

“Upon lowering the vehicle’s window glass, the two girls were allegedly seen half-naked, a situation which immediately aroused suspicion among bystanders and security personnel.

“It was gathered that the victim’s inability to provide satisfactory answers to questions asked at the scene, coupled with his decision to turn away from the checkpoint, further heightened suspicion.

“The situation was compounded by the inability of the two girls to speak the local language or properly express themselves in English, thereby fueling the false alarm of kidnapping,” he said.

The police spokesman said that the development led to a mob chase, the doctors eventual interception by irate youths who descended heavily on him and inflicted severe bodily injuries before the police arrived.

Olayinka said that statements had been obtained from eyewitnesses, including an Okada rider allegedly hit during the ensuing confusion.

He said that efforts were ongoing to identify and apprehend all individuals involved in the mob action and destruction of property.

Olayinka said the Commissioner of Police in Oyo State, Mr Abimbola Olugbenga, condemned the act of jungle justice and spread of false and unverified information capable of creating unnecessary tension and undermining the gains of security recorded in the state.

As the Babajide Sanwo-Olu administration in Lagos State draws towards a transition to a new government, the governor has disclosed what his successor will inherit.

Sanwo-Olu said his administration had started drafting a comprehensive Legacy and Transition Bill that would legislate key policy frameworks of his government and those of the previous administrations into permanent institutional structures that would guide succeeding governments on governance track.

The Bill, the governor said, would be transmitted to the House of Assembly in the course of the year, pointing out that the next administration would not only inherits completed projects, but also efficient systems.

Sanwo-Olu spoke at the ongoing 19th Executive-Legislative Parley organised by the Office of Political, Legislative and Civic Engagement of the Lagos State Government.

The three-day event with the theme: “Equal Participation in Governance: Highlighting the Importance of Collaboration in Achieving the Present Administration’s THEMES+ Agenda”, is holding at the Eko Hotels and Suites, Victoria Island.

In attendance were members of the State’s Executive Council, all members of the legislature, National Assembly lawmakers of Lagos origin, All Progressives Congress, APC, leaders in Lagos, members of Governance Advisory Council, GAC, led by their chairman, Prince Tajudeen Olusi, and members of the Body of Permanent Secretary in Lagos State civil service.

Sanwo-Olu stated that his administration’s final full year would be dedicated to completing and delivering outstanding infrastructure projects in the state.

He emphasised he would not abandon any “project of strategic importance” to the state’s economic growth.

By the third quarter of this year, the governor disclosed that his administration would publish a full, publicly accessible “State of Lagos Report”, which would be a data-driven account of what his administration had accomplished in the last seven years.

He said: “This final full-year Executive-Legislative Parley in the life of my administration must be more than a review; it must be a platform for commitments. I want to make the pledges to the legislature and to the people of Lagos that we will complete and commission outstanding milestones on our transport infrastructure before the end of this administration’s term. No Lagos Government project of strategic importance will be abandoned mid-stream.

“Secondly, we will present before the House a comprehensive Legacy and Transition Bill that legislates key policy frameworks into permanent institutional structures, so that the next administration inherits not just projects, but systems. We will convene a Citizens’ Assembly on Equal Participation, bringing together women, youth, persons with disabilities, and underrepresented communities, to produce a concrete roadmap for inclusion.

“The fourth commitment is that, we will publish a full, publicly accessible State of Lagos Report by the third quarter of this year, which is an honest, data-driven account of where we started, what we have achieved, and what remains. Lagos deserves to know. As a partner in this journey, I seek the House of Assembly’s continued engagement over these final months with the same energy and commitment it has shown throughout.”

As the state moves towards transition, Sanwo-Olu warned that political pressures would intensify and institutional focus could falter.

He urged political office holders not to give in to resist the temptation, admonishing them to focus on delivering on their goals.

The governor thanked members of the legislature for the mutual understanding and cooperation they had with the Executive arm, noting that the progressive legislations passed by the House of Assembly were critical to the success of his administration’s ambitious programmes.

He said: “Over the course of this administration, the House has passed critical legislation that gave legal force to our most ambitious programmes; from the laws enabling our multimodal transport framework to the fiscal instruments that supported our infrastructure bonds.

“The budget approvals, the oversight hearings that kept agencies accountable, and the constituency engagements that brought citizen voices into the legislative record; these are not small things. They are the scaffolding on which everything we have built has stood.”

Sanwo-Olu used the opportunity to outline the progress recorded by his administration over the past year across the THEMES+ Agenda.

Special Adviser to the Governor on Political Legislative and Civic Engagement, Dr Tajudeen Afolabi, stated that the yearly meeting, held for nearly two decades, had provided a platform to foster harmonious relationships among all political actors in the state.

The Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, have warned against fibre-optic cable damage during road construction and related civil works across the country.

They declared that the rising incidents of avoidable fibre cuts resulting from negligence would no longer be excused, noting that offenders risked prosecution as the act constitutes a crime.

The warning was issued in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head, Public Affairs Department of NCC, Mrs Nnenna Ukoha, and the National Public Relations Officer of the NSCDC, Babawale Afolabi.

NCC and NSCDC stressed that fibre optic cables were critical national assets that powered Nigeria’s digital economy, enabled seamless communication, supported emergency services, connected businesses, and facilitated government operations.

They said their destruction, whether through negligence, lack of coordination, or wilful actions, posed a direct threat to national security, economic stability, and public safety.

According to the organisations, “Under the Designation and Protection of Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) Order 2024, telecommunication fibre infrastructure is classified as Critical National Information Infrastructure. Consequently, any damage resulting from unauthorized digging, construction activities, or failure to collaborate with relevant authorities to prevent damage during construction constitutes a criminal offence.”

They warned that individuals, construction companies, or government contractors who damaged fibre optic infrastructure would be made to face prosecution and applicable sanctions as provided under existing laws, including the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act 2015.

The NCC and NSCDC therefore issued a categorical warning that “future damage to fibre optic infrastructure caused by excavation, road construction, or any civil engineering activity conducted without due consultation or collaboration with network operators and relevant regulators will attract strict legal consequences.”

They called on federal, state and local government agencies; road construction companies; utility service providers; and private developers to ensure full compliance by conducting pre‑construction verification of fibre routes; collaborating with the NCC, telecom operators and NSCDC before and during construction; adhering to approved guidelines for excavation and right‑of‑way management; and reporting any accidental damage immediately to enable rapid response and mitigation.

They encouraged the public to report any act of fibre-optic infrastructure sabotage or damage to the nearest NSCDC Office or email to protect@ncc.gov.ng, cipu@nscdc.gov.ng or call 622 toll-free.

The ninth edition of the Africa Music Awards (AFRIMA) is once again a reminder that Africa’s music industry has never lacked talent, energy or global relevance. What it has often lacked are strong continental platforms that can outlive their moment and resist the familiar cycle of early promise and quiet collapse.

Tagged Unstoppable Africa, the series of events held in Lagos over five days from January 7 to 11, 2026, reflected the creativity, resilience and steady growth that have sustained AFRIMA for more than a decade. Too many promising platforms have risen, shone briefly and disappeared. That reality makes what AFRIMA represents far more important than trophies and red carpets.

“AFRIMA is not just about giving awards. It is about bringing Africa together under one roof to celebrate our stories, culture and future through music,” AFRIMA President and Executive Producer, Mike Dada, said at the awards ceremony held at the Eko Convention Centre. “I am happy that we had delegates from at least 48 countries, including 1,216 artistes, delegates and production team members. Looking at the winners, all regions of Africa are represented, showing the growth of our music industry. Artistes from South Africa, Côte d’Ivoire, Algeria and Ethiopia were among those who led in the major categories.”

Of course, AFRIMA is more than a prize-giving night. It is a week-long convergence of networking, masterclasses, business summit, concert and recognition. The ninth edition, initially scheduled for November 2025, reinforced why the platform remains relevant years after it was conceived to reward African musical creativity while promoting the continent’s cultural heritage.

The week opened with a reception hosted at the British Deputy High Commission residence in Lagos before moving into more serious engagement at the Africa Music Business Summit. Those conversations mattered. The focus was not fame or flash, but ownership, investment, copyright and sustainability. Dada put it plainly: “African music is not only about the songs and vibes but about building the business aspect of the industry.” That statement captures the core of AFRIMA’s purpose. The awards are not just a celebration; they are an attempt to build structure around a fast-growing cultural force.

In her keynote address, Sweden’s Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms Anna Westerholm, described Africa, particularly Nigeria, as home to some of the world’s most exciting talents and urged African countries to deliberately leverage music for economic development. Speaking for the African Union Commission, Ms Angela Martins said music and the creative economy are vital tools for development, job creation and unity, stressing the importance of strong intellectual property frameworks and fair remuneration. On investment, Mr Mark Smithson of the British Deputy High Commission said Africa must look inward for funding, noting that over one trillion dollars in institutional capital exists on the continent and can be mobilised to attract further global partnerships.

The Lagos State Government, represented by the Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture, Mrs Toke Benson-Awoyinka, reaffirmed its commitment to the sector, disclosing that the state invested N8.4 billion in creative industries in 2025.

Before AFRIMA, there were the KORA Awards, Channel O Africa Music Video Awards and the MTV Africa Music Awards among others.

Allowing AFRIMA to follow that path would be a serious loss.

There was also room for shared enjoyment ahead of the grand finale. The AFRIMA Music Village at Ikeja City Mall reminded everyone why music matters in the first place. Fans and artistes gathered without barriers as performers from across Africa took turns on stage. Hosted by Do2un, it was loud, communal and unmistakably African.

An eclectic crowd was treated to performances by 9ice, Terry Apala, Mr P, Skales, King Lex, Maxee, Shoday, Natureboii, Martinsfeelz, Syemca, Obesere, Femi Kuti, Yemi Alade, Wale Thompson and Adewale Ayuba under a friendly Lagos sky. The lineup also featured Sabrina from Cameroon, Hiro from Côte d’Ivoire and France, and Didi B from Côte d’Ivoire.

On the decks were Nigerian DJs YK Mule, Hatman DJ Nickii, DJ Bubu, DJ Primeau and DJ Coolest, joined by Ghana-Belgium-based DJ Brookebailey. Emerging talents Ella Centric, El Nayan, Dellfire, Black Astro, Blinkz Baba and Mayowa Afolabi, products of the AFRIMA Diamond Showcase project, also took to the stage, underlining the platform’s commitment to nurturing new talent.

The awards night itself, hosted by Falz, Kenya’s Claudia Naisabwa and French-Senegalese Liliane Maroune, reflected both excellence and balance. Rema led the night with three major honours: Artiste of the Year, Best Male Artiste in Western Africa, and Best African Artiste in RnB and Soul. Other Nigerian winners included Burna Boy for Album of the Year, Yemi Alade for Best Soundtrack in a Movie, Series or Documentary and rapper Phyno, named Best African Artiste in African Hip Hop. Emerging talents were also recognised, with Qing Madi winning Most Promising Artiste of the Year and Chella named African Fans’ Favourite.

Beyond Nigeria, the ceremony celebrated talent from across the continent. Senegal’s Bakhaw Dioum won Song Writer of the Year, while Algeria’s DJ Moh Green claimed DJ of the Year. Ghana’s Wendy Shay won Best Female Artiste in West Africa, South Africa’s Nontokozo Mkhize emerged Best Female Artiste in Southern Africa, and Tanzania’s Juma Jux was named Best Male Artiste in Eastern Africa. Côte d’Ivoire recorded multiple wins, with Milo and Morijah taking the male and female African Inspirational categories, Didi B emerging Best African Lyricist or Rapper, and Team Paiya winning Best African Duo, Group or Band. Ethiopia featured prominently, with Haddinqo named Best African Jazz, Weeha winning Best African Dance or Choreography, and Veronica Adane taking Best African Traditional. Guinea celebrated Manamba Kanté as Best African Pop and Takana Zion as Best African Reggae, Ragga and Dancehall.

African music has travelled the world long before revisionist labels tried to compress it into Afrobeats or Amapiano. Fela Kuti, King Sunny Ade, Hugh Masekela, Miriam Makeba, Youssou N’Dour, Salif Keita, Zaiko Langa Langa, ET Mensah, Cesária Évora, Papa Wemba, Mbilia Bel and Angélique Kidjo have long stood as global images of the continent. Yet there have been few pan-African awards platforms truly owned by Africa and backed by its institutions.

With the African Union as partners, AFRIMA was conceived to recognise excellence across the continent while encouraging cooperation between artistes, policymakers and investors. After years of planning and stakeholder engagement, the first edition was held in Lagos in 2014. It has been held a total of seven times in Nigeria and once each in Ghana and Senegal. Build-up events have been held in The Gambia, South Africa, Cameroon, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Congo, Zimbabwe, London, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin Republic, Kenya, Uganda, Ethiopia, Morocco, Algeria, Comoros and about nine other African countries.

AFRIMA’s strength lies in its continental spirit, even when hosted by a single country.

The Lagos State Government once again provided financial and institutional support that made hosting an event of this scale possible. Corporate partners such as FirstBank, The Address Homes, Guinness, Utilita, Gobet247, LIRS and others also deserve recognition for standing behind the project and helping turn ideas into action. So do the British High Commission and the Embassy of Sweden as cultural exchange partners.

But appreciation must not end the conversation. AFRIMA has reached a point where goodwill alone is no longer enough. Africa’s cultural history is littered with award ceremonies that started well and faded due to weak funding, limited government backing, inconsistent corporate support and questionable organisational practices. Before AFRIMA, there were the KORA Awards, Channel O Africa Music Video Awards and the MTV Africa Music Awards among others.

Allowing AFRIMA to follow that path would be a serious loss.

Stronger and more deliberate support is needed from governments across the continent, not just from host cities. Corporate Africa must also do more. Many brands benefit from the global reach and cultural influence of African music. Supporting AFRIMA should be seen as a long-term investment in Africa’s creative economy, not a one-off sponsorship.

The social and economic impact of hosting an event like AFRIMA is far-reaching. It challenges the notion that Africa is underdeveloped or unsafe. Thousands of people gathered, both indoors and in open spaces, without fear of molestation or discrimination. If proof is needed, one only has to look at the crowd at Ikeja City Mall, where a large number of fun-seekers were drawn by a well-coordinated media campaign and the promise of a memorable evening.

Beyond the spectacle, AFRIMA delivers a tangible economic boost to the host city. Hotels, restaurants, transport services and local vendors all benefit from the influx of artistes, delegates, media professionals and fans. Lagos saw its tourism and hospitality sectors energised, with increased bookings, patronage and international visibility. Events of this scale create jobs, generate revenue and reinforce the city’s reputation as a safe and vibrant destination for business and leisure alike.

African music remains one of the continent’s strongest unifying forces. It speaks where politics often divides. AFRIMA represents that shared voice. If Africa truly values its culture, then AFRIMA must be sustained, protected and allowed to grow.

As the biggest pan-African music awards still standing, AFRIMA offers a level of continental integration that foreign platforms such as the Grammy, BET, MOBO and MTV Europe Music Awards make no claim to provide for Africa. That alone is reason enough to ensure it does not become another good idea that failed to survive its moment.

Nigeria U-20 Women’s national team, the Falconet began their U-20 WAFU-B Girls Cup campaign on Saturday in Benin on a bright note, defeating Ghana’s Black Princesses 3-1.

Head coach, Moses Aduku, named a strong starting XI, with Taiwo Afolabi returning to the squad after featuring for the Super Falcons in recent World Cup qualifiers.

Janet Akekoromowei and Precious Oscar also earned starting roles, while captain ,Joy Igbokwe, led the team from midfield.

The opening half lived up to the billing of a fierce West African derby, with both sides battling for control in the middle of the park.

Nigeria, however, broke the deadlock in the 37th minute after a Ghanaian defender handled the ball inside the area.

Akekoromowei made no mistake from the spot, sending goalkeeper Grace Andoh the wrong way to hand the Falconets a deserved lead.

On resumption of the second half, Akekoromowei struck again in the 46th minute showing great composure to lift a clever lob over Andoh pouncing on a loose ball in the Ghanaian box.

Ghana halved the deficit just four minutes into the second half through Sarah Nyarko , who finished from close range to restore hope for the Black Princesses 2-1.

The Ghanaians pressed for an equaliser, but Nigeria’s backline remained resolute, frustrating their opponents with disciplined defending.

The Falconets sealed the win two minutes from time when Favour Chiamaka in-swinging corner sailed over Andoh into the net, restoring Nigeria’s two-goal advantage.

With the 3-1 victory, Nigeria top Group A and will next face hosts Benin Republic on Sunday and later meet Ghana on Tuesday by 10 a.m.

The 2025 WAFU Zone B Under-20 Girls’ Cup started on Friday will end on Wednesday with just three participating nations -Nigeria, Ghana, and hosts Benin Republic.

The WAFU B U-20 Girls’ Cup serves as a crucial developmental platform for identifying new talents and preparing national squads for upcoming CAF and FIFA youth competitions.

An elder statesman and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Chief Shuaib Afolabi Oyedokun, has described the willingness of Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Clement Adesuyi Haastrup to ascend the throne of his forefathers despite his global connections as a powerful moral and ethical lesson in royalty, higher politics and national economics.

In his goodwill message of congratulations to the paramount ruler who clocked 77 last Friday, Chief Oyedokun added that Oba Haastrup’s story was a shining example of how leadership, patriotism and service could transform communities and drive progress amid his legacies which had continued to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens alike.

A statement released by Oyedokun reads:

“At the mention of the name of a man of valour, it is culturally pertinent in this part of the world to valorize his tribute with the eulogy of his heroic achievements.

“It is therefore my heartfelt joy that in wishing His Royal Majesty, Oba, Dr. Clement Adesuyi Haastrup a happy birthday, I do exact here with confidence that he is an ethicist of no mean order.

“Sufficient here to quote from Albert Schweitzer’s “Civilization and Ethics” where-in he is quoted that “although, it is political and economic questions that the present day prescribe for study, we can accomplish the problems of political life if only we approach them as men who are trying to think ethically. All those who in any way help our thoughts about ethics are working for the coming of peace and prosperity in the world. They are engaged in higher politics and higher national economics.

READ ALSO: Lagos assembly wades into power crisis at Royal Gardens Estate

“Oba Adesuyi’s greatness in all fronts makes his ascendancy to the paramount kingship of Ijesaland a credible journey which endeared him to the warm embrace and approval of Think Tanks who had zealously yearned for and met in him, an Apostle of Reformation of Ijesaland and Restoration of its lost glory .

“He is not only born great as a Prince, he attained greatness by dint of hardwork, while for his many laudable attainments, became a ready candidate for kingship and by which integrity, greatness has accorded him a pride of place not only in Ijesaland, but in both the state and in the country.

“There’s no gainsaying that the rapid social and economic transformation sweeping across Ijesaland today is a direct result of the patriotic fervor embodied by Oba Clement Haastrup.

“This illustrious leader, has brought a wealth of experience and distinction to the throne.

“As the Owa-Obokun of Ijesaland, Oba Haastrup’s enthronement is a testament to his exceptional leadership qualities.

“His background as a seasoned statesman and administrator has uniquely positioned him to drive progress and development in the region.

“His willingness to serve as the Owa-Obokun, despite his impressive credentials and global connections, serves as a powerful moral and ethical lesson in royalty, higher politics, and national economics.

“His leadership style and commitment to the welfare of his people are an inspiration to many.

“Oba Haastrup’s story is a shining example of how leadership, patriotism, and service can transform communities and drive progress. His legacy will undoubtedly continue to inspire future generations of leaders and citizens alike.

“His Olori, Dr. Victoria Haastrup continues to occupy an enviable space in the supportive role she has been playing in the life of Oba Adesuyi Haastrup and I hereby congratulate her for being a strong pillar behind the success of His Royal Majesty at all times.

“That Oba Haastrup is now surpassing his people’s expectations reveals his adequate preparedness for the challenges a-head, no wonder why he has now gone extra miles beyond the mile post of Reformation in which ijesaland is now swimming joyously.

“While wishing him many years of undeniable exploits, progress and continuous sound health on the throne of his ancestors, I urge the peace-loving people of ijesaland, Osun State and Nigeria to rally support around Oba Haastrup Adesuyi, noting that his greatness deserves to be encouraged.”
