Adeh said the raids were meant to maintain law and order, prevent crimes, protect infrastructure and curtail drug abuse and trafficking in the FCT.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, and other electricity distribution companies are to pay different fines for over-billing customers.

The AEDC alone will pay N1.69 billion-fine, according to a publication of the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC.

The fine is detailed in Order NERC/2024/114 published on NERC’s website on Friday.

NERC said it was part of its September 2024 Supplementary Order.

The order, signed by NERC Vice- Chairman, Mr Musiliu Oseni, and Commissioner for Legal, Licensing, and Compliance, Mr Dafe Akpeneye, followed a comprehensive investigation into AEDC’s billing practices.

According to the order, NERC finds out that AEDC and other distribution companies overcharged customers between January and September, 2023.

The commission said that the respective fines “represent 10 per cent of the over billed amount.”

The document also stated that AEDC’s annual operating expenditure would be reduced by N1.69 billion effective from September.

The order said that the Benin Distribution Company was fined N804 million; Enugu Distribution Company, N310 million; Eko Distribution Company, N1.41 billion, while Ibadan Distribution was fined N15 million.

According to the order, Ikeja Distribution Company will pay N1.41 billion-fine; Jos Distribution Company, N1.33 billion and Kaduna Distribution Company, N115 million.

Others are Kano Distribution Company; N20 million Port-Harcourt Distribution Company; N1.16 billion and Yola Distribution Company; N54 million.

The NERC noted the penalty was a response to the distribution companies’ non-compliance with previous directives aimed at capping estimated billing for electricity consumers.

The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, has imposed a fine of N200 million on Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc., AEDC, for failing to adhere to its tariff guidelines, creating a stir among consumers and industry stakeholders alike.

The fine came in the wake of the Supplementary Order to the Multi-Year Tariff Order for 2024, issued on April 3, 2024, which AEDC has been found in violation of.

In a detailed correspondence released by NERC and seen by this publication, it was revealed that AEDC improperly applied an approved tariff increase across all customer bands, contrary to the specific directive that only customers in Band A were subject to the rate hike.

The oversight has not only led to undue charges for customers in Bands B to E but has also called into question the operational compliance and fairness standards maintained by one of the country’s leading electricity distribution companies.

The regulatory body’s supplementary order had initially set out to adjust tariffs in a manner that would not unduly burden the vast majority of electricity consumers, particularly those not in Band A.

READ ALSO: FG recommends Segilola model to miners

However, AEDC’s misapplication of the new tariffs has breached the trust of its consumer base and contradicted the principles of transparency and equity that form the cornerstone of Nigeria’s electricity regulatory framework.

As part of its remedial directives, NERC has mandated AEDC to reimburse all affected customers in Bands B, C, D, and E through the provision of balance tokens reflective of the rates they should have been charged.

This remedial action is expected to be complied with immediately, therefore providing relief to thousands of consumers who were wrongfully overcharged.

Moreover, NERC’s directive requires AEDC to present evidence of compliance with these corrective measures by April 12, 2024, emphasising the urgency with which the regulatory body seeks to address and rectify the oversight. Failure to meet these requirements could lead to further regulatory actions, underscoring the seriousness with which NERC is approaching the breach of regulatory compliance.

This incident brings to light the challenges facing Nigeria’s electricity sector, highlighting the critical need for strict adherence to regulatory orders designed to safeguard consumer interests and ensure the fair administration of energy services.

As the NERC continues to monitor the situation closely, the outcome of this enforcement action is being watched by industry observers as a test of the regulatory framework’s effectiveness in maintaining discipline and fairness in the country’s evolving electricity market.

President Bola Tinubu has directed immediate settlement of outstanding electricity bill due to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC.

The directive was made known on Tuesday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

The president’s directive followed the reconciliation of accounts between the State House Management and AEDC.

Contrary to the AEDC’s initial claim of N923 million debt in paid advertorial in newspapers, the State House outstanding bill is N342, 352, 217.46, according to a letter by the management of AEDC to the State House Permanent Secretary dated February 14, 2024.

Having reconciled the position to the satisfaction of both parties, the Chief of Staff to the President, Rt Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila, was said to have given assurance that the debt would be paid to AEDC before the end of this week.

Following the example of the Presidency, Chief of Staff also urged other MDAs to reconcile their accounts with AEDC and pay their electricity bills.

Some residents of Wazobia Community in Mararaba, Karu local government area of Nasarawa State have protested against a five-year power outage in the community.

The chairman of the community, Mr Ifeanyi Alamaujo, who led others during the protest to Mararaba Area Office of the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, AEDC, said, “We marched to AEDC Mararaba area office because we are paying for electricity but we don’t get service.

“Sometimes, we get supply for only ten minutes.

“We came here to discuss with the management to know why we don’t get power supply. It has been five years. It is too much.”

Receiving the protesters, the AEDC Area Manager of Mararaba area office, Mr Aluko Temidayo, assured them that the company would do the needful.

“Like I promised, we will do the needful to make everyone happy. We cannot be 100 per cent perfect because of our system. We will do something that at the end of the day, you will see changes.

“The stage we are in now is a general problem. It is not your community alone but we will do our best to make our customers happy.

“If our customers are not happy, we too are not happy too because you pay our salaries. Please, bear with us,” he pleaded.

Also speaking, Mrs Comfort Raphael, one of the protesters who is also a nurse appreciated the manager for receiving them.

“We the women of Wazobia Community came out today because we are not happy. We trust the AEDC area manager’s promise.

“We will come back here again if things do not improve,” Raphael said.

An elder of the community, Mr John Otitoaja, appealed to Temidayo to move the community from the 11 KVA to 33KVA to enhance steady power supply to the community.
