The Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt.-Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has said that logistics and synergy across service support corps are “pivot of military success”.

Oluyede stated this on Tuesday in Benin while declaring open the 26th Combat Service Support Training Week of the Nigerian Army.

The army chief was represented by Maj.-Gen. Kevin Aligbe, Commander, Nigerian Army Training and Doctrine Command.

The event has the theme: “Enhancing Synergy Amongst Combat Service Support Corps for Effective Service Delivery Within a Joint Multi-Agency Environment.”

According to Oluyede, the week-long training will enhance the army’s war-fighting efficiency in a dynamic and complex security environment.

“The Combat Service Support Training Week is a strategic enabler that reinforces the Army’s capability to sustain operations across all spectrums of conflict.

“Logistics is the pivot upon which the fulcrum of military operations revolves, and it is thus one of the major determinants of professional success,” he said.

He explained that the theme reflected ongoing efforts to strengthen cooperation and build a more responsive system capable of tackling asymmetric and evolving threats.

“As our contemporary operating environment continues to evolve, so must our capabilities, especially our combat service support capabilities.

“This training presents an invaluable opportunity for us to reflect, exchange ideas, and deepen cooperation across the corps,” he stated.

READ ALSO: UK applauds gains of Nigeria’s economic reforms

He reaffirmed his “soldier first” philosophy, stressing that prioritising the welfare and readiness of troops remained central to operational success.

“Combat, as we all know, is rife with risk and uncertainty. Therefore, impressing the soldier-first concept which I consistently advocate is the best approach.

“This is because the concept prioritises the soldier and aggressively prepares him for the rigours of combat,” he said.

The army chief, however, commended the efforts of corps commanders in sustaining logistics capacity in spite of paucity of funds.

He assured that under his leadership, more investments would go into training, repair, and maintenance to keep troops combat-ready.

Oluyede expressed confidence that “the insights and outcomes from this training will significantly enhance support capabilities and positively influence operations across our various theatres.”

Earlier in his address of welcome, Maj.-Gen. Adekunle Adeyinka, Commander, Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport, NACST, said the army’s operational effectiveness depended heavily on seamless logistic support, not only the combat arms.

“In today’s complex security landscape, the operational effectiveness of our army lies not less in the combat arms, but more critically on the seamless logistic support rendered by the service support corps.

“This underscores the need to continuously improve methods to prudently and efficiently provide optimal support across the Nigerian Army,” he said.

Adeyinka revealed that the army headquarters approved the participation of 50 students each from the four service support schools to expose young officers to practical problem-solving in logistics.

“This will mentor them towards developing problem-solving mindsets while benefitting from the rich and diverse experiences of our esteemed retired senior officers,” he explained.

Retired senior officers, and representatives of sister services and security agencies graced the occasion, held at the Nigerian Army School of Supply and Transport.

A panel of financial experts has called for urgent reforms to Nigeria’s banking sector to stave off a potential economic crisis.

The call was made at a recent session of People’s Parliament, a virtual forum organized by the citizen advocacy group, Rescue Nigeria.

Warning that current interest rates, weak regulatory oversight, and outdated banking infrastructure could lead to significant economic disruption, the experts emphasized that immediate action was needed to restore stability and protect both businesses and individuals.

The event, titled “Getting Banking Right in Nigeria,” highlighted how high borrowing costs, fuelled by inflation and a weakening currency, are stifling economic growth and discouraging investment.

Panelists urged the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, to adopt a more accommodating monetary policy to ease the debt burden on Nigerians, stimulate economic activity, and create a more favorable environment for entrepreneurship.

Panelists included Sir Adegbenga Olufemi Badejo, a chartered accountant with extensive experience in accounting and consultancy; Mr. Ademola Oni, a former investment banker now in energy infrastructure; and Mr. Ibukun Akinyinka, an accountant with dual experience in Nigerian and Canadian banking.

The seasoned professionals pointed to rising dissatisfaction among Nigerian bank customers, who are grappling with poor service, high fees, frequent technical glitches, and limited access to affordable loans.

The session, moderated by renowned broadcast journalist Funke Anikeade Treasure, underscored the pressing need for reforms to address these long-standing issues.

READ ALSO: Democracy in the spotlight as Americans go to the polls

Among the recommended reforms, the panel stressed that banks must prioritize customer service by investing in technology and training to ensure efficient, reliable service.

They also urged banks to implement fair and transparent fee structures to prevent exploitative charges. Investment in robust digital infrastructure was another priority, aimed at minimizing system disruptions and improving the digital banking experience for customers across the country.

Additionally, the experts called on banks to embrace digital innovation to meet the evolving needs of consumers.

In terms of regulatory oversight, the panelists argued that a stronger framework is necessary to ensure accountability and protect consumers.

They recommended that the CBN should intensify its regulatory enforcement, including implementing consumer protections and stricter penalties for non-compliance.

Financial inclusion was also emphasized, with calls for banks to extend services to underserved rural areas, a move that would boost economic development and create new opportunities for millions of Nigerians.

In light of rising cybersecurity concerns, the panel advised that banks should invest in stronger defences to safeguard sensitive customer data.

The panel also discussed the role of Fintech, which they described as a beacon of hope for Nigeria’s financial sector.

They pointed to Fintech’s potential to transform financial services, especially in underserved areas, but cautioned that the sector needs regulatory support, increased digital literacy, and better internet infrastructure to reach its full potential.

Panelists urged the government to prioritize technology development to facilitate the improvements.

In closing, Rescue Nigeria, also known as the Initiative for Good and Informed Citizenship, committed to continue its advocacy for a stronger banking sector in Nigeria.

Signatories for Rescue Nigeria, Biodun Durojaiye and Tunde Odediran, reaffirmed the organisation’s pledge to work with policymakers, regulators, and industry leaders to push for a banking system that is more equitable, inclusive, and efficient.

They believe that with the right reforms, Nigeria’s banking sector could be a driver of economic growth, unlocking opportunities and improving the quality of life for all Nigerians.

The ECOWAS Court of Justice, on Wednesday, ordered Nigeria to pay N2 million each to some victims of the October 2020 #EndSARS protests in Lagos.

The protests were organized by citizens against SARS, a unit of the Nigerian Police Force at Lekki, Lagos, over its alleged brutality of citizens.

Delivering judgment, Justice Sengu Koroma, the Judge Rapporteur, held that Nigeria must pay each applicant N2 million as compensation for violation of their ‘rights to security of person.’

The court also ordered that Nigeria should pay the victims the amount as compensation for ‘violation of their rights to prohibition of torture and cruel, inhuman, degrading treatment, rights to freedom of expression.’

Other grounds of the compensation as ordered by the court included violation of their ‘rights to assembly, and association, failure of duty to investigate human rights violations, and right to effective remedy.’

The court also ordered that Nigeria must adhere to its obligations under the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, ACHPR, investigate and prosecute its agents, who were responsible for the violations.

The court further ordered that Nigerian government must report to the court within six months on the measures taken to implement the judgment.

Justice Koroma further held that Nigeria breached Articles 1, 4, 6, 9, 10, and 11 of the ACHPR.

The law specifies the ‘right to life, security of person, freedom of expression, assembly and association, prohibition of torture, duty of the state to investigate, and the right to effective remedy.

According to the court, there is, however, no violation of the applicants’ right to Life, adding that the applicants filed their claims in vitam.

It said that several articles of the ACHPR were breached by the Nigeria government, which culminated in the fundamental breaches of human rights violation therein.

The court declared that the applicants were denied the right to ‘effective, immediate remedy,’ and ordered that the respondent make reparations to the applicants for the violation of their fundamental human rights.

READ ALSO: Dapo Abiodun to criminals: If you test our will, we will neutralize you

Also on the three-member panel were Justices Dupe Atoki, presiding, and Ricardo Claúdio Gonçalves.

The applicants – Obianuju Catherine Udeh; Perpetual Kamsi and Dabiraoluwa Adeyinka – had alleged that the violations occurred during the peaceful protests at the Lekki Toll Gate in Lagos State between October 20 and 21, 2020.

The protests, which were triggered by the alleged killing of Daniel Chibuike, aimed to address SARS’ incessant harassment and brutality.

The first applicant’s claims included that the soldiers shot protesters, resulting in deaths and injuries, which she live-streamed, and subsequently received threatening phone calls that forced her into hiding and eventual asylum.

The second applicant, responsible for protesters’ welfare, had alleged that soldiers began shooting after a power cut, leading to her hospitalisation due to police tear gas.

The third applicant recounted narrowly escaping being shot, observing the refusal of ambulance entry by soldiers, and later witnessing inadequate hospital care for victims.

She argued that she and her colleagues took over the victims’ care, and she faced ongoing threats and surveillance, believed to be by respondent’s agents.

The applicants had sought declaratory reliefs and compensation from the court for the alleged violations.

Responding, however, Nigeria had through its counsel, denied all the claims made by the applicants, and argued that the protesters unlawfully assembled at Lekki Toll Gate on October 20, 2020, under the guise of protesting against SARS.

The respondent also maintained that its agents followed strict rules of engagement and did not shoot or kill protesters.

It argued that the first applicant incited the crowd by playing music and using her Instagram page to stir disaffection against law enforcement, which was targeting escapee members of Boko Haram and bandits.

The respondent contended that the second applicant’s provision of logistics and welfare support indicated her support for the violent protest.

It claimed that soldiers were present to restore peace until the police arrived, denying any harm inflicted on protesters and the refusal of ambulance access.

The respondent also denied that the third applicant’s presence was peaceful, asserting it was meant to escalate violence.

It argued that the treatment and care of the injured were managed by the Lagos State government, and submitted that the Applicants did not provide credible evidence to support their claims, or the reliefs sought.
