A lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, on Friday, retracted the alleged defamatory statements made against Umar Damagun, acting National Chairman of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, the acting National Secretary.

Adeyanju, in a letter dated December 6 written from his law firm, Deji Adeyanju & Partners, and signed by Zainab Otega, a lawyer, tendered an apology for the perceived defamation.

Otega, in the letter addressed to Johnson Usman, SAN, counsel to Damagun and Anyanwu, said the “statements were not intended to defame your clients.”

She further said that “any perception of defamation in the said statements is regretted and withdrawn with apologies.”

The letter reads: “We are solicitors to Deji Adeyanju, Esq (hereinafter referred to as our client), on whose instruction we act.

“Our client is in receipt of two letters from the law firm of the revered Senior Advocate of Nigeria, J. J. Usman, alleging that some statements he made on a podcast a few weeks ago were deemed defamatory of Damagun and Anyanwu, the National Chairman and Secretary of the PDP respectively.

READ ALSO: Lagos: Halt soil pollution, government warns residents

“Our client’s statements on the podcast were taken out of the bigger context of the conversation which is the need for the leadership of the People’s Democratic Party to provide a virile opposition to the ruling party.

“These statements were not intended to defame your clients, and any perception of defamation in the said statements is regretted and withdrawn with apologies.

“As a human rights activist, our client remains committed to the betterment of Nigeria and will continue to urge those in leadership to prioritise the interest of Nigerians over and above personal interest.”

On Wednesday, Damagun and Anyanwu, through their lawyer, threatened to sue Adeyanju over allegations bordering on defamation if he failed to apologise.

Damagun and Anyanwu had, in two separate letters, accused Adeyanju of describing them as “tea man” and “Kilishi man” respectively on a podcast interview.

The activist was said to have described Damagun as “a Tea man who goes to serve tea in Femi Gbajabiamila’s House.”

He was also said to have described Anyanwu as “a Kilishi Man who goes to serve ‘Kilishi’ at the residence of the Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila,” in the interview.

Adeyanju was also accused of alleging that Damagun and Anyanwu had failed to lead PDP as credible opposition party in the country.

The Lagos State government on Thursday urged residents, market men and women, artisans, non-governmental organisations, and commercial establishments to prioritize environmental cleanliness in order to prevent spread of all forms of diseases.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Engr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, made the call at the commemoration of the year 2024 World Clean-up Day advocacy / Sensitization programme held at Bada Community in the Oshodi/Isolo local government area, encouraging residents to voluntarily continue with the exercise.

He described the event as a global exercise with the 2024 theme: “Make room for life”, underscoring the fact that residents should inculcate the habit and make it a way of life by cleaning up their environment always and refrain from blaming the government once it rains and flash flood occurs.

“Good sanitation practices is not an individual responsibility but a collective responsibility for everyone to take action; residents cannot continue to accuse the government whereas residents continually dump their waste in drainages,” he said.

READ ALSO: Edo election: Govt declares Friday work-free day

He said there was time for everything as the time for politicking had passed and it was the time for governance.

He added that the exercise was a clarion call for all to embrace good sanitation habits.

He stressed that dirty environment promoted the spread of diseases such as diarrhoea, malaria, typhoid as well as the outbreak of cholera experienced in Lagos a few months back.

He said the government carried out the exercise to clean up drainages, streets, medians, kerbs, sidewalks, refuse black spots, vegetal nuisance in Bada community as well as markets, motor parks and garages in Oshodi-Isolo local government area so that they could sustain the regular cleaning of their environment.

He reiterated that residents should desist from the unwholesome waste disposal as generation of waste was an unavoidable aspect of man’s existence, stressing that residents should always patronize the Private Sector Partnership, PSP, for better service delivery.

He appealed to residents, markets men and women to stop seeing KAI Officials as enemies, saying if people imbibed good environmental sanitation and hygiene practices as a way of life, KAI officials would not close their markets.

He explained that the Oja-Oke, Idera Market on Baderin Street, Oshodi, was sealed up as a result of unsanitary activities saying various whistle blowers and customers kept complaining to the government about the unsanitary habits.

He expressed appreciation to everyone for participating in the exercise while urging that the exercise must continue as a sustainable environmental programme across the state.

Earlier in his welcome remarks, the Director Sanitation Services, Dr. Hassan Sanuth, said the United Nations set aside a day in September of every year to carry out thorough cleaning and sanitation of the environment.

According to him, “I want to encourage all of us to put in dedication to continue this exercise as this is a clarion call to key into the vision of Mr Governor to improve the aesthetics of our great state, promote our tourism potential and improve the economy.”

In her response, the Iyaloja General Oshodi / Isolo Market, Mrs. Sekinat Ejide Adeyanju, expressed appreciation to the government for the laudable exercise saying continuous effort to cleanup and sanitize the state by the government was for the best interest of all residents.

She pledged that market women and men would continue to inculcate the culture of engaging in environmental sanitation always as well as endeavour to dispose waste responsibly and patronise the PSP operators.

The team had earlier cleaned up Peluola Street, Bada Community, Mafoluku Oshodi and sealed up Oja -Oke, Idera Market on Baderin Street, Oshodi for various unsanitary activities before proceeding to the sensitization/advocacy programme.

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has declared that the detention of its leader, Joe Ajaero, is illegal, an affront to rights of workers and democratic principles of freedom of movement and expression.

Deputy President of NLC, Mr Adeyanju Adewale, made the declaration in a communique at the end of an emergency meeting of the National Administrative Council, NAC, of the Congress on Monday in Abuja.

Adewale said that the detention of Ajaero was an attack not just on the NLC leadership but on the rights of all workers and citizens to organise, protest and express themselves freely.

He alleged that the detention was also an attempt by the state to scuttle the implementation of the new National Minimum Wage.

It would be recalled that the NLC president was reportedly arrested at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport while on his way to the United Kingdom on the invitation of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, of Britain.

Adewale said that after extensive deliberations, NAC unequivocally condemned Ajaero’s detention without any legal warrant or justification.

“NLC notes with grave concern that Comrade Ajaero was lawfully discharging his duties to represent Nigerian workers and had not committed any offence warranting such action.

“The NLC demands the immediate and unconditional release of Comrade Joe Ajaero before 12 midnight today (Monday).

READ ALSO: Tragedy: 48 killed as petrol tanker explodes in Niger

“The Council reiterates that Joe Ajaero is not a fugitive or a criminal, and his detention is an act of intimidation aimed at silencing dissent and stifling the labour movement’s voice in Nigeria.

“The Congress therefore places all its affiliates, State Councils, Civil society allies, and the Nigerian populace on red alert.

“NAC-in-session, therefore, summons an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) by 9:00 a.m, tomorrow, September 10 to take compelling action to engage the current forces of retrogression,” he said.

He added that the NLC will not stand by while these rights are trampled upon.

“NAC in session demands the immediate implementation of the New National Minimum Wage which has been signed into Law.

“We also demand the immediate reversal of the current hike in the price of petrol to N617/Litre.

“The NAC also urged the Nigerian government to reverse this dangerous trend of authoritarianism and lawlessness, which threatens the country’s democratic fabric.

“NLC will not waver in its duty to protect the rights of workers and the freedom of all Nigerians,” he said.

Maritime workers on Monday warned of a potential nationwide strike if the federal government continues with the proposed 50 per cent automatic deduction from revenue accrued to the Nigerian Ports Authority, NPA.

They made the threat in a statement jointly issued by the Senior Staff Association of Statutory Corporations and Government-Owned Companies, SSASCGOC, and Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, MWUN, in Lagos.

In the statement signed by President, SASCGOC, Mr Akinola Bodunde and President General, MWUN, Mr Adewale Adeyanju, the union said they had written a letter to the president regarding the development.

The unions warned that failure to rescind the decision would lead to workers’ withdrawal and total shutdown of ports nationwide.

Both unions insisted on a 30 per cent deduction from NPA’s revenue instead of 50 per cent.

The unions said, “Automatic deduction of 50 per cent of its internally generated revenue shall leave the authority financially incapacitated to discharge these responsibilities to the host community, which may lead them to resort to unhealthy activities.

“We recommend that 30 per cent of the revenue internally generated by the Authority could be automatically deducted whilst 70 per cent is left for the authority to accomplish its overhead costs and statutory responsibilities, failure of which the union would have no other option than to withdraw the services of its members from all Ports formations nationwide.”

READ ALSO: EFCC arrests four brothers, 30 others over alleged internet fraud

The president of SASCGOC, Mr Akinola Bodunde, speaking on behave of the union, highlighted the severe financial implications of such a deduction on the operational capabilities of the NPA.

Bodunde explained that with the NPA being a self-funded entity reliant on its IGR, a 50 per cent reduction would affect its operational capabilities.

According to him, the reduction in revenue could jeopardise crucial maritime operations such as dredging port channels and maintaining infrastructure, ultimately affecting vessel traffic and port activities.

He explained that workforce development and community relations were at risk due to the potential consequences of the proposed deduction.

Also, the President General of MWUN, Mr Adewale Adeyanju, underlined the importance of a well-trained workforce for efficient port operations.

Adeyanju expressed concerns that the reduction in revenue could hinder investment in employee training and welfare.

He said that the union worried over the NPA’s ability to meet its obligations to host communities, saying that could be compromised, potentially leading to unrest and social upheaval.

The MWUN president, thereafter, issued an ultimatum to the government, demanding a revisions of the directive to allow for a more reasonable deduction from internally generated revenue.

Speaker of Ogun State House of Assembly, Olakunle Oluomo (APC-Ifo1) has been impeached.

Oluomo was impeached by 18 out of the 26 members of assembly during the plenary presided over by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi (APC-Yewa South).

Consequently, the lawmakers have elected Mr Oludaisi Elemide (APC-Odeda) as the new Speaker.

A lawmaker, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju (APC-Yewa North 1) moved the motion for Oluomo’s impeachment, while it was seconded by Mr Ademola Adeniran (APC-Sagamu II).

Adeyanju had entered the assembly chamber with the maze, in company with other lawmakers.

Speaking with newsmen shortly after his election as the new Speaker, Elemide said that the people of the state should expect the best from him.

“We are law abiding legislators. We want the world to know that there is now a change in the leadership of the House of Assembly,” he said.

Elemide, who said that 18 lawmakers supported his emergence as speaker, appealed to residents of the state to remain calm.

“We are in custody of all the authority of the house. We are assuring that the new leadership will support our governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun.

“I can assure you that the governor did not know anything about this impeachment,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Damilola Soneye (APC-Obafemi Owode), noted that the Speaker was supposed to be first among equals.

“The Speaker was impeached due to gross misconduct, bordering on high handedness, lack of focus and transparency, arrogance, poor leadership style, financial misappropriation and inciting members against one another,” Soneye said.

The impeached Speaker, Oluomo, was not present at plenary, while all efforts to get his reaction to the development proved abortive, as several calls made to his mobile phone did not go through.

The Clerk and the Deputy Clerk of the assembly, Mr Deji Adeyemo, and Mrs Funmilayo Adeyemi, respectively, were at the plenary, while heavy security presence was noticed at the assembly complex.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Health, Dr. Olusoji Adeyanju, while speaking at the inaugural meeting of the State’s Technical Working Group on Thursday, said the government was leaving no stone unturned to prevent the outbreak of the disease and re-emergence of other diseases.

Adeyanju, who spoke through the Director, Public Health, Dr. Olubunmi Ayinde, at the Emergency Operation Centre, Yemetu, Ibadan, called on members of the group to work as a team and map out strategies that would enhance the success of the committee.

He noted that members of the technical working group had been put into different pillars to ensure the effectiveness of the group.

His words: “The Technical Working Group is to look into re-emerging diseases and how to prevent people in Oyo state from having these diseases.

“For the effectiveness of this group, we have ensured that this group together, has different pillars, members of different pillars have come together, like the risk communication group, we have the case management group, those that will look after cases if they occur; the risk communication is to sensitize and create awareness in the community.

“We have a surveillance group, working within communities and health facilities to ensure that there is no disease or if any disease comes up, it is reported promptly.

“Relevant stakeholders from the Agricultural sector, and veterinary doctors are here, looking at it holistically, so that we can work together to achieve more.”

Dr. Abiodun Abatan of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture, submitted that human nature diseases emanated from animals.

Abatan advocated the use of veterinary laboratories in the state, random blood samples and proper testing for animals to know the status of rams and cows to be slaughtered for distribution or consumption.

He appealed to all and sundry to be conversant with the source of the meat to consume to prevent unforeseen circumstances.

Part of the submissions of stakeholders at the meeting were mass annual vaccination of animals, waging war against those operating illegal abattoir in the state, community sensitization, introduction of certified meat seller shops at strategic points among others.

The Ogun State House of Assembly has passed a resolution for the state to observe Isese Cultural Day every August 20.

The day, according to the resolution, would also be declared a work-free day by the state government

The resolution was passed on Tuesday at the plenary of the House.

The House Majority Leader, Mr Yusuf Sheriff (APC – Ado-Odo Ota I), moved the motion for the House to adopt the passage of the resolution, which was later seconded by Mr Lukmon Adeleye (PDP-Odogbolu).

Speaking, Mr Adegoke Adeyanju (APC-Yewa North 1), who sponsored the motion, said the day was meant to promote the people’s tradition and culture in the state.

Adeyanju had earlier read the amended resolution, and it was seconded by Mr Damilola Soneye (APC-Obafemi Owode).

Other members who spoke in support of the resolution, opined that the Isese Cultural Day celebration would promote the cultural heritage of Yoruba land.

In his remarks, the Speaker, Mr Olakunle Oluomo (APC – Ifo I), said that the Cultural Day would enable parents to transmit the culture and tradition of the kingdom to the younger generation.

“Isese is a Yoruba name that tells us what we inherited from our parents and it’s also a way to continually promote culture and tradition so they do not go into extinction,” he said.

London to Lagos biker and a member of Rotary Club International, Mr Kunle Adeyanju, on Saturday said he cheated death about four times during his 41-days travel across 13 countries.

Adeyanju told newsmen in Ilorin on the sidelines of a reception organised for him by Kwara Rotary Club that the adventure was tortuous and risky.

“Truth is that every kilometre of the 12,000km I covered was fraught with challenges, pains and difficulties.

“Several times I came close to dying. I actually saw death several times. When people say they saw death I never believed that, but when I saw that like four times in Sahara and Mali I now believe that death exists.

“God just wants to keep me alive that is why death did not take me. But one thing I said to myself was that whatever it took I would not quit,” said the biker.

On the motive behind the adventure, he said that “Doing this was basically to achieve two purposes of raising awareness of end polio message by seeing how we can see the level of vaccines acceptance. The second objective was to raise fund.

“For me, the two had been accomplished because everybody is now aware of polio. Polio has got a renewed drive as we have the vaccines to end the virus.

“I am very happy that the message has taken a global dimension,” he said.

“I covered a total of 12,000km spanning through 13 countries and 41 cities.

“I left London April 19 and arrived Lagos on May 29,” he said.

The President of Presidents of Rotary Clubs in the state, Otunba Rich Oladele, said that the bike rider had done the state and indeed Nigeria proud.

“He has written the name of Nigeria on global map and in the Guinness Book of Records.

“He is a member of Rotary Club International,” Oladele said.
