By TOLA ADENIYI

Words failed me to express the sadness which enveloped me consequent on the passing of a brilliant Mind who had been a part of me in the last 70 years or so.

Femi was brought along at age 5 or thereabout, to live with the Adeniyi Royal Family of Isamuro when his aunt got married to my senior cousin Buroda Modiyu Adeniyi-Osinowo.

Fast forward, I brought him into journalism by employing him to work with me in the Nigerian Tribune (1979) where he performed excellently well.

My late Best man Professor Femi Sonaike admitted him as a pioneer student of the Mass Communication Department of Ogun State Polytechnic, Abeokuta where he proved his mettle.

A self-made man, Femi loved his mother, appreciated his father and made his children the centre of his life.

I got him appointed as the pioneer editor of my now rested Sunday Stamp (1982) in Ibadan and he gave a good account of himself.

Femi was a significant journalist, a great writer, a master of the craft, and by all standards, one of the greatest journalists ever.

As author and publisher, Femi was diligent, very diligent, and professional.

A self-made man, Femi loved his mother, appreciated his father and made his children the centre of his life.

Mr Humility and Contentment has passed.

May his gallant and enterprising soul rest in peace and may his wife and lovely children and grandchildren find comfort in the Lord God.

My condolences to his sisters as well.

The recent opening of the Kamba and Tsamiya border routes by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is both timely and strategic. The livelihoods of northern communities that straddle the Nigeria–Niger border have been significantly revived. Nigeria–Niger relations have been strengthened, and commercial activities, particularly the automobile, transport, and logistics business across both sides of the border, are back in full swing.

Beyond these immediate gains, the reopening of the Kamba and Tsamiya corridors has restored economic life to communities that depend almost entirely on cross-border movement for trade, agriculture, transportation, and small-scale commerce. For many families in these border areas, this decision has translated into renewed income opportunities, reopened markets, and a return to lawful economic activities after a prolonged period of restriction.

The positive impact is already evident across border towns and transit corridors, where traders, transport unions, artisans, and logistics operators have resumed operations. Agricultural produce is once again moving through recognised routes, local markets are regaining vitality, and businesses linked to vehicle sales, spare parts, and cross-border haulage are experiencing renewed demand. These developments are critical for employment generation and economic stability in northern Nigeria.

Diplomatically, the reopening of these routes has reinforced people-to-people ties and mutual trust between Nigeria and the Republic of Niger. Border communities separated by colonial boundaries share deep cultural, historical, and family bonds. By restoring lawful movement through established border points, the administration has strengthened regional cooperation and reaffirmed Nigeria’s role as a stabilising leader within the West African sub-region.

From a strategic and security perspective, functional and regulated borders offer better oversight, intelligence coordination, and cooperation than prolonged closures that often push activities into informal channels. The reopening of Kamba and Tsamiya provides an opportunity for improved monitoring, stronger engagement with neighbouring authorities, and greater involvement of local communities in maintaining peace and security along the border corridors.

This border reopening reflects a balanced and pragmatic approach to governance that recognises the link between economic inclusion, regional diplomacy, and national security. It is a decision that directly addresses the realities of border communities while advancing Nigeria’s broader economic and diplomatic interests, and it stands as a clear demonstration of responsive and people-centred leadership.

The healthy relations and collaboration between Nigeria, the Niger Republic and Republic of Benin need to be highlighted. The Comptroller-General of the Nigerian Customs Service, Dr Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, painstakingly ensured that both countries were fully committed to respecting international trade protocols before the reopening of the Kamba and Tsamiya border routes, which have already stimulated economic activity.

This border reopening reflects a balanced and pragmatic approach to governance that recognises the link between economic inclusion, regional diplomacy, and national security.

Apart from the three countries’ collaboration for prosperity, the Kebbi State Government, border communities, and security outfits were also consulted and sensitized on the benefits, technicalities and use of new technology for monitoring border routes and the implications for trade and security.

Again, President Tinubu’s vision and initiative are driving a win-win for economic diplomacy for the West Coast.

Scholars, journalists, public officials, and prominent private-sector leaders gathered on Thursday for a webinar hosted by Prime Business Africa to honour Professor Pat Utomi on his 70th birthday.

Attendees celebrated his decades-long influence on Nigeria’s intellectual, political, and civic life, hailing him as a fearless voice of reason, a teacher of generations, and a moral compass in the nation’s public affairs.

Dr. Marcel Mbamalu, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief of Prime Business Africa, said Utomi’s greatness lies not only in his achievements but in his character. He described him as humble, approachable, and deeply committed to ethical leadership and public value, noting that in a society where many bend rules to get ahead, Utomi has remained firm in his principles, even when it attracts resistance. Mbamalu said this moral consistency is what makes Utomi deserving of the honour.

Delivering the keynote, Professor Abiodun Adeniyi recalled his days as a reporter covering Utomi at The Guardian, noting that almost everything Utomi said made the news because he commanded attention. He added that Utomi became socially influential in his early twenties, making it unsurprising that many still find it hard to believe he is 70.

Adeniyi highlighted Utomi’s extensive writings on politics and governance, especially his work on state capture, which exposes how narrow elite take control of public institutions and ensure that the resources of the state are used for their own selfish ends.

He recommended Utomi’s definition of leadership as “a type of behaviour or relationship that is people-centred,” urging Nigerian leaders to adopt it in order to leave a lasting legacy.

He added that Utomi’s ability to connect theory with practice and unite town and gown has made him a major contributor to political economy and national development thinking.

According to Bongo Adi, Professor of Economics at Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University, Utomi is a colossus whose writings have shaped a generation of young scholars. He recalled how many people grew up reading Utomi’s newspaper columns, often studying and memorising his words in order to imitate him. Adi said that although Utomi is an economist, he communicates like a seasoned literary writer.

Furthermore, he identified three qualities that define Utomi: aesthetics, truth, and ethics. He also recalled Utomi’s role in promoting Lagos Business School and noted his involvement in the Obedient Movement, saying Utomi’s capacity and depth of knowledge make him well suited for leadership.

Professor of Mass Communication, Chinyere Okunna, said Utomi’s long-held argument that Nigeria faces a crisis of ethics remains central to the country’s problems. She recalled his bold public support for Peter Obi during the Labour Party defection in Asaba as an example of his commitment to people-centred leadership. Okunna added that Nigeria would remain underdeveloped unless leaders who share Utomi’s ideals are given the chance to govern, urging him not to relent as young Nigerians continue to look up to him.

Dr. Okey Ikechukwu described Utomi as a man of deep conviction whose integrity is genuine rather than performative. He said Utomi does not seek praise, making every tribute an honest reflection of his impact. Ikechukwu added that Utomi’s achievements are the product of hard work and integrity, not abuse of office, and described him as a natural leader whose ideas will endure long after his lifetime.

Osita Chidoka, former Minister of Aviation, said Professor Pat Utomi has been a lasting source of inspiration to him, particularly for his consistency in contributing to national development even outside public office.

He noted that while many of Utomi’s contemporaries in government have faded from public relevance, Utomi has remained a steady and respected voice of reason. Chidoka said Utomi has continued to influence public debate through his books, newspaper writings, and civic engagements on Nigeria’s development trajectory, adding that this enduring intellectual presence has made him more impactful than many who have held political office.

He also observed that Nigeria often pursues interventions without sufficient data and knowledge, and warned against a growing suspicion of intelligence in public life. According to Chidoka, Utomi represents the kind of thoughtful and informed leadership Nigeria needs, calling for a shift toward greater respect for competence and ideas in governance.

Moderating the session, Mr. Jahman Anikulapo described Utomi as “an elephant” in every field he has ventured into, noting that the wide range of people celebrating him reflected the depth of his impact. He said Utomi’s influence cuts across academia, civic engagement, and public life, adding that whether through books, media appearances, lectures, or conferences, Utomi remains a teacher from whom there is always something to learn. Anikulapo also recalled Utomi’s long record of speaking truth to power and his consistent effort to resist elite capture of the Nigerian state.

In his reflections, Professor Utomi traced the roots of his life philosophy to the discipline, values, and guidance he received from books, mentors, and providence. He said he had no regrets about the path he had taken over the past 70 years, stressing that delayed gratification and strong values had guided his choices.

Utomi described the relationships he had built over the years as a blessing, thanking God for a life marked by goodwill and favour. Drawing on a conversation with a priest who likened his experience to that of Socrates, Utomi expressed confidence that ideas rejected in one generation can later shape societies, adding that he remained hopeful about Nigeria’s future even if it is not built solely on his own ideals.

The webinar ended with a collective affirmation of Professor Utomi’s legacy as a principled intellectual, a teacher of generations, and a relentless advocate for a more ethical and just Nigeria. Utomi also serves as the Board Chairman of Prime Business Africa.

The Seme Area Command of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) says it generated the sum of ₦15,598,945,794.00 in revenue in 2025, being its highest-ever annual collection since inception.

Mr Tunde Ayagbalo, the Public Relations Officer, PRO, of the command, disclosed this in a statement on Wednesday in Seme.

“In Dec. 2025, the command generated a historic ₦3,628,485,590, the highest monthly revenue on record.

“This record is attributed to the effective rollout of the One-Stop Shop (OSS) initiative by the Comptroller-General of Customs, which improved the command’s coordination and trade facilitation for stakeholders.

“From Jan. to Dec. 2025, the command generated the total of ₦15,598,945,794.00 only, marking a remarkable 117 per cent increase over the ₦7,166,576,397.49 recorded in 2024,” he said.

Ayagbalo said that on November 11, the command hosted the launch of the Green Border Initiative by the National President of the Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA), Mrs Kikelomo Adeniyi.

“This featured an empowerment programme where industrial sewing machines, grinding machines, gas burners with cylinders and start-up grants were distributed to members of COWA Seme Chapter.

“On the same day, the Comptroller-General of Customs, launched a free medical outreach under the Customs Cares Initiative.

“The outreach delivered essential healthcare to over 1,000 beneficiaries, alongside a tree-planting exercise for environmental sustainability,” he said.

He said that the Seme Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Wale Adenuga, had successfully reduced checkpoints along the Lagos-Abidjan corridor to the two (2) locations approved by the Federal Government.

Ayagbalo said that the reduced checkpoints was in alignment with the Comptroller-General’s directive.

According to him, this significantly eased legitimate trade, minimised delays and contributed to the command’s outstanding revenue performance.

He noted that the command also maintained robust anti-smuggling operations, seizing 685 parcels of Cannabis Sativa (Marijuana), 495 packs of Tramadol in Dec. 2025.

“Others are 2,000 packs of Super Power Sildenafil tablets (300mg), an excessively high-dosage sexual enhancement drug, through intelligence-led operations, enhanced patrols, risk profiling and inter-agency collaboration,” he said.

The Seme customs spokesman quoted Comptroller Adenuga as having warned smugglers that the borders are no longer safe for illicit activities.

“With advanced intelligence, technology and unwavering vigilance, the officers and men of the command will intercept and prosecute offenders.

“So, smugglers should desist immediately or face the full weight of the law,” he said.

He added that Adenuga assured legitimate traders and compliant stakeholders of a safe, conducive and efficiently facilitated Seme corridor.

Ayagbalo quoted Adenuga further as saying that the corridor now had seamless processes and reduced delays to support genuine cross-border commerce and economic growth.

Justice Oyeyemi Ajayi of Oyo State High Court, on Monday, sentenced five persons to death by hanging over conspiracy and murder.

The convicts, Segun Taiwo, 36; Kehinde Ademola, 46; Yahaya Adeniyi, 45; Chinonso Samson, 41 and Opadotun Michael, 32, were convicted on a two -count charge of conspiracy and murder.

Justice Ajayi found the convicts guilty and sentenced them to death by hanging.

Justice Ajayi in his judgment said, “Due to the reasons provided for each of the defendants and circumstantial evidence of murder, I am of the considered view that this court could safely infer conspiracy in the acts that led to the death of Akeem Shittu.

“In the final analysis, I sentenced each of the defendant to 20 years imprisonment for conspiracy to commit murder.

“Then on count two, each of the defendant is sentenced to death by hanging.”

The State Counsel led by Mrs K. K. Oloso, earlier told the court the convicts and others at large, on April 10, 2024, at about 8:30p.m at Elepe, Arulogun Road, Ojoo, Ibadan, conspired and murdered one Akeem Shittu by inflicting matchet cut on him.

She said Shittu (deceased), a taxi driver, was said to have hit a motorcycle transporting two persons on it.

This led to an argument which they tried to settle at a nearby pub.

The deceased was asked to pay N50,000 to treat them but he gave them N8,000.

He was not allowed to leave the scene, after which he was stripped naked but he later escaped from them.

He was however overpowered and macheted to death while his taxi was later found in front of one of the convicts’ wife’s shop.

According to the prosecuting counsel, the offence is contrary to Section 316 and punishable under Section 319 and 324 of the Criminal Code Laws of Oyo State 2000.

The Lagos State government is set to take part in the upcoming African Cultural Festival, ACF, starting from September 19 to 21, 2025 in Pennsylvania, United States of America, to showcase its tourism potentials as well as boost its growth.

While Lagos State will be represented by a delegation of creatives, entrepreneurs, and innovators passionate about culture and its global relevance, Afrobeat musician, Innocent Idibia (a.k.a 2baba) will be leading performances to electrify the event with his musical skills, significantly at a time Billboard has named his hit song ‘African Queen‘ Best Afrobeat Song of All Time.

According to the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tourism, Mr. Idris Aregbe, the Lagos State government’s participation is aimed at reinforcing the state’s global cultural presence, in line with the THEMES+ agenda of the administration.

He added that it would afford the state the opportunity to ‘tell our stories and secure a seat among global cultural hubs.’

The concert, labelled as “Rhythms of Africa” with the theme “Africa to the World: Culture, Creativity and Collaboration,” will be held at the Forum Auditorium, 500 Walnut Street, Harrisburg, PA.

CEO of the ACF, Wole Adeniyi, described the timing and collaboration as perfect for African growth and reconnection with its diaspora, promoting economic development.

READ ALSO: TikTok fraud: Impersonator bags 6-month jail term

He said, “The Festival could not have come at a better time. Africa and the world need unity, collaboration, and creativity to forge a better future. ACF is a movement to reconnect Africa with its diaspora and reignite cultural and economic transformation.

Adeniyi, in his statement, added that for Tuface, the event will serve as a way to celebrate his legendary status as one of Africa’s foremost musicians, as Billboard has crowned his hit song “African Queen” the Greatest Afrobeat Song of All Time, topping its Best 50 Afrobeat songs.

“The song has been celebrated for its cultural significance, commercial success, and global impact,” he added.

The Festival Director, Foluke Michael, added that the festival would position Pennsylvania as ‘the new frontier for Africa’s global expansion through youth empowerment, heritage storytelling, and cross-continental business networking. ACF is a call to action, an investment, and a legacy for Africa and its diaspora.’

Other performers on the Billboard top 10 list include: Wizkid, Flavour, Rema, Tems, CKay, D’banj, Davido, Burna Boy and P-Square.

Renowned music executive producer and ACF Concert Director, Femi Ojetunde, emphasised that the ‘Rhythms of Africa’ will unleash a powerful new energy unlike anything the world has ever experienced.

The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has recorded an unprecedented revenue of ₦1.3 trillion in the first quarter of 2025, more than double the ₦600 billion collected during the same period in 2023.

Comptroller-General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, attributed this remarkable growth to transformative reforms under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, as revealed in an upcoming State House documentary marking the president’s second anniversary.

Adeniyi highlighted that the revenue surge emanated from improved technological deployment, enhanced port operations, tightened enforcement on revenue leakages, and a renewed culture of accountability across Customs commands.

“We collected ₦1.3 trillion in Q1 2025 alone. This is not due to higher import volumes. Imports have dropped due to foreign exchange constraints. What has changed is efficiency, transparency, and enforcement,” the Comptroller-General said.

He disclosed that the Service is preparing to launch the E-Customs Modernisation Project.

This $3.2 billion initiative will digitise cargo processing, surveillance, and payment systems across Nigeria’s ports and borders.

“We’re laying the foundation to move from a manual, paper-based system to a fully digital service. The E-Customs Project is central to our future. Once fully deployed, we project it will add $250 billion in cumulative revenue over 20 years,” he said.

Adeniyi added that the newly launched Authorised Economic Operator, AEO, Programme is now onboarding pre-vetted importers, allowing compliant businesses faster processing and reducing port congestion.

“It’s about trust and efficiency. If you’re compliant, you get green-lane treatment. This is how modern customs systems work globally,” he said.

The Customs CG confirmed that the Service had intensified its anti-smuggling operations and closed long-standing revenue leakages.

He said over ₦64 billion was recovered from previously under-assessed or undervalued imports in the last nine months, and major smuggling rings at the Seme, Idiroko, Katsina, and Sokoto borders had been dismantled.

He said the new joint border patrol task forces established in coordination with the Nigerian Army, DSS, and Police had also yielded positive results.

“We’re no longer just chasing smugglers in the bush. We’re using data, surveillance drones, and port intelligence to act in real-time. Once systemic leakages are now being plugged,” Adeniyi said.

To ease trade and reduce business costs, Adeniyi disclosed that NCS was fast-tracking the roll-out of the National Single Window.

“This digital portal will integrate all government agencies involved in cargo clearance,” he said.

“Right now, you deal with up to 15 agencies manually. With the Single Window, you’ll do it all online, in one place. This will slash clearance time and costs,” the CG explained, adding that clearance timelines at Apapa and Tin Can Ports had already dropped from 21 days to 7–10 days for compliant importers.

The Comptroller-General said the agency had introduced fast-track lanes for agro-exports and was working with the Nigerian Export Promotion Council, NEPC, to streamline outbound cargo processes in line with the government’s push for non-oil exports.

“We’re promoting exports aggressively. Last year, Nigeria exported over ₦340 billion worth of solid minerals and agro commodities through formal channels, up by 38%. We’re targeting even more in 2025,” he said.

He stated that the Customs Service was also undergoing internal transformation, with over 1,800 officers trained in advanced data analytics, risk profiling, and artificial intelligence.

“Customs is no longer just about physical inspection. We are becoming an intelligence-led organisation, and our officers are being retrained to match global standards,” Adeniyi said.

“The president gave us a clear directive: block leakages, facilitate trade, and raise revenue without burdening Nigerians. That is what we are doing. And the results are beginning to speak for themselves.”

The thought-provoking question as to whether the Legislature in Nigeria represents a watchdog or a lapdog is the main issue on the much-publicized monthly interview discourse, Boiling Point Arena, billed to hold on Sunday April 13.

To offer perspectives on the matter is a media icon, elder statesman and popular columnist, Chief Tola Adeniyi, who is the Guest Speaker on the current affairs programme, Boiling Point.

The programme will hold via Zoom and transmitted live on five radio stations across Lagos and Ogun states.

Among the radio stations are WASH 94.9FM, Sweet 107.1FM, Roots 97.1FM, Ẹrí-Nbe 92.1FM and Women Radio 91.7FM.

The once-in-a-month interview discourse with an incredibly large online followership, is hosted by a media professional and public relations strategist, Dr Ayo Arowojolu, who parades 35 years career experience spanning the media, banking and education sectors.

The interview is themed: “The Legislature and the Waning Principle of Check and Balances in Nigeria”.

Expectedly, Adeniyi will dig in on the myriads of issues involved, including giving a definitive answer to the frequently asked questions as to how far can Nigeria’s democracy go with the public perception of a “rubber stamp” legislature across the political space.

Also germane for discussion is the feasibility of sustaining the bi-camera, two-tier legislative houses at the federal level, the National Assembly, given the humongous spendings in several billions of naira annually.

Adeniyi whose prolific writing skills have churned out 14 books of biography, poetry and drama as well as over 15,000 articles, essays, short stories and reviews, occupies a conspicuous spatial in media practice and management across five continents.

Foremost traditional ruler, the Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Prof Saka Matemilola is expected as the keynote Speaker to herald the discourse in his capacity as the Chairman, Boiling Point Council of Royals and Elders.

Boiling Point is a news and general interest group, comprising an array of eminent personalities including over 300 professors, technocrats, industry leaders, high court justices, traditional rulers, security top shots, media professionals and several others.
