By KAZEEM AKINTUNDE

The 2026 Global Terrorism Index report (GTI), released last week by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP), shows that Nigeria experienced the largest year-on-year increase in terrorism-related deaths globally. The surge propelled Nigeria to fourth place on the index, trailing only Pakistan, Burkina Faso, and Niger. In 2025, Nigeria was ranked sixth, while in 2024, we were eighth in the world.

Nigeria’s ascent in the rankings comes amid decade-long security crisis characterised by an escalation in terrorism, banditry, and kidnappings. The violence and associated deaths have taken a heavy toll on the nation’s security apparatus, with several senior military officers among those killed in recent operations. Despite the fact that the United States of America recently bombed terrorists’ hideout in Sokoto State and has sent a sizeable number of its troops to the country to train Nigeria’s security operatives, the terrorists seem to be daring America’s President Donald Trump by stepping up their criminal enterprise.

There is no denying the fact that Sub-Saharan Africa remains the global epicentre of terrorism, hosting six of the 10 most affected nations. In contrast, Western nations experienced a paradoxical trend. While global incidents decreased, fatalities in the West rose by a sharp 280%. This spike was primarily driven by political terrorism, anti-Semitism, and Islamophobia.

Nigeria recorded the largest increase in terrorism deaths globally in 2025, with fatalities rising by 46 per cent, from 513 in 2024 to 750. Africa’s most populous nation is grappling with a multifaceted security crisis, as extremist groups such as Boko Haram and its offshoots attempt to carve out control of swathes of territory. Various ethnic militia and other criminal elements, including ‘bandit’ groups, are also active, mostly in North and Central Nigeria. Newer threats from emerging terrorist groups like the Lakurawa are also emerging.

In February this year, 162 people were massacred in Kwara state, near the border with the Benin Republic. This was one of the deadliest single attacks in the country’s recent history. On Wednesday last week, the army said troops, backed by air support, repelled a coordinated assault by Islamist insurgents on a military base in the north-eastern state of Borno, killing at least 80 fighters, including senior commanders. The assault comes after multiple suicide bombings last week Monday in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital, that killed at least 23 and left more than 100 wounded.

The report stated that the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Boko Haram were responsible for most of the terror attacks in the country in 2025. Civilians were the most targeted group in 2025, accounting for 67 per cent of victims of the attacks, while the military accounted for 19 per cent.

Boko Haram was responsible for Nigeria’s second most lethal terrorist attack of the year. In May, armed militants raided the neighbouring villages of Mallam Karamti and Kwatandashi in Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

While Borno remains the epicentre of Nigeria’s terrorism crisis, accounting for more than two-thirds of all attacks and deaths in 2025, together, ISWAP and Boko Haram accounted for 80 per cent of all terrorism-related deaths in Nigeria in 2025. The report revealed that Lakurawa, a relatively new group that surfaced in 2024, recorded 10 attacks and 74 deaths in 2025. However, there has been a growing wave of insecurity across Nigeria’s South-West region, which has become a major source of concern for residents, community leaders, and security experts.

States such as Ondo, Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti, once considered relatively peaceful compared to other parts of the country, are now witnessing a disturbing rise in kidnappings, armed attacks, and killings.

In many rural communities and along major highways, residents now live in constant fear, as criminal gangs exploit forests and remote areas to carry out violent operations. The situation has heightened anxiety among farmers, travellers, and residents who increasingly feel unsafe in their own communities. Specifically, the region has seen a sharp rise in insecurity over the past two months, with 32 reported attacks across affected states.

In some communities, farmers have abandoned their farmlands, while travellers avoid certain roads for fear of falling victim to kidnappers. The violence has not spared community leaders and traditional institutions, as even traditional rulers have been targeted and murdered by armed attackers. Such incidents have further deepened the sense of insecurity across the region and raised serious concerns about the safety of lives and property.

Amid the growing crisis, the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has raised alarm over what it described as the increasing influx of terrorists and bandits into the South-West from the northern part of the country.

Few days ago, the group warned that the region is gradually coming under pressure as criminal groups move into forests and border communities to establish operational bases for kidnappings and violent attacks. According to the organisation, the rising incidents of abduction and attacks on communities indicate a dangerous escalation of insecurity in the region.

But state governors in the South west are still behaving as if nothing is amiss. They issue press statements after any major attack to condemn the act and it ends there. Their docility may end up endangering the lives of millions of Nigerians if they continue to slumber. Agreed that some of them met with former President Muhammadu Buhari before they could establish the regional security network, the Amotekun. The then President Buhari still went ahead to decline to issue licenses to State Governors to purchase sophisticated weapons for the outfit. Will Amotekun operatives, armed with only dane guns be expected to face terrorists with sophisticated weapons?

Even with President Bola Tinubu in power, State Governors in the South west have not met with the President to canvass for more fire power for the security outfit. While Tinubu may have his style of dealing with the security challenges facing the country, the Governors should, as a call to duty, ensure that high calibre arms and ammunitions are bought for the group.

If the State Police now being championed by President Tinubu eventually comes to fruition, security apparatus in the South western states would be strengthened, with Amotekun providing the much needed man power support, while the newly established forest guards would take care of the bushes, which is being gradually taken over by armed terrorists.

The worsening security situation in the region has also sparked public outrage in several communities, particularly in Ondo State, where residents have staged protests against the rising wave of kidnappings. In Akure-North Local Government Area, angry youths and community members recently blocked a major highway to protest repeated attacks and abductions in their area. The protesters expressed frustration over the continued threat posed by armed criminals and called on the authorities to take urgent steps to protect residents.

Ondo State is reeling from a wave of insecurity, with kidnapping, terror attacks, and killings leaving residents in fear. Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa has vowed to tackle the menace, announcing measures like night-time motorcycle ban. Security forces have arrested over 160 suspects, but concerns persist, as ransom payments continue to fuel the crisis.

Recent attacks have also led to the closure of schools, as anxious parents rush to withdraw their children from areas deemed unsafe. The impact on farming communities has been particularly severe, with many abandoning their lands for fear of being attacked or kidnapped.

Time for talk is over. What we desire is peace and the safety of all Nigerians where ever they may reside.

Gunmen also recently invaded the community near Akure Airport and fired gunshots, throwing the community into panic and leading to the hurried closure of schools in the area. The development led to anxious parents rushing to schools to withdraw their children, as rumours of insecurity spread quickly across the communities.

In Osun State, border communities, especially those around Osun/Kwara borders, are living in fear. The fallout of insecurity in Kwara State is responsible for the situation. Villages that were known to be peaceful are now being attacked by terrorists. For example, unknown gunmen invaded Ora-Igbomina community recently, kidnapping residents on two different occasions.

The gunmen, whose identities were unknown during the first attack in January, kidnapped a retired customs officer, Emmanuel Owolabi, in Ifedayo Local Government Area of the state. The kidnapped victim was released after three weeks and payment of ransom to his kidnappers. Another resident, a farmer, was not so lucky, as he was killed.

In February this year, the men of the underworld returned to the same Ora community, located on the Osun-Kwara boundary, and kidnapped two residents, Tayese Adeyeye, and Sunday Adewumi. In view of these happenings, the state government held several security meetings, where it was agreed that the border security should be strengthened.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, after a Security Council meeting, said that his administration would work with all security operatives to tighten security at border towns to curb the spreading insecurity in Kwara State from affecting Osun.

Rising cases of insecurity, particularly kidnapping, have become a growing concern across parts of Oyo State, with residents of several communities expressing fears over their safety.

Areas considered most vulnerable include Oke-Ogun, Ibarapa, and some parts of Ogbomoso. Suspected criminal elements have reportedly taken advantage of isolated routes and forested areas to carry out abductions.

Ogun State has also had its fair share of insecurity with reported cases of kidnapping and banditry in some local communities. In Lagos, many known kidnappers and bandits have been seen in the state, “cool off” after major operations in the North. Again, local criminal elements have also “cashed in” by staging several kidnappings-for-ransom, although many of them were caught.

The six South west Governors met early this year to collaborate on strategies to nip the crisis in the bud. They spoke about establishing a Joint Surveillance and Monitoring Team to coordinate security operations across the region, specifically to address kidnapping and activities of criminal groups. They also spoke on deploying advanced technology, including aerial surveillance systems (drones) to monitor forests, which serve as kidnappers’ hideouts, while plans are afoot to launch a live digital intelligence-sharing platform for real-time exchange of threat alerts.

To fund the initiatives, a South West Security Fund (SWSF) is to be set up, funded by the states, to ensure steady financial resources for security patrols, equipment, and training, overseen by Special Advisers on Security from all the six states. Amotekun is also to be empowered to intensify patrols along vulnerable routes and in forests. There is a renewed emphasis on deploying dedicated Forest Guards to reclaim areas used for kidnapper hideouts.

On the influx of large numbers of people into the region which could lead to criminal infiltration, the Governors said that they would be tightening border monitoring, and also collaborating with the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) for better identification. It is time for them to fast track the implementation of these plans for the safety of the region. Time for talk is over. What we desire is peace and the safety of all Nigerians where ever they may reside.

See you next week.

On August 15th, the people of Osun State will head for the poll to elect a new Governor. The incumbent, Ademola Adeleke, formerly of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), will be on the ballot but this time, as the flag bearer of the Accord Party, believing that he deserves a second term for his impact on the lives of many during his first term. The main opposition party in the state, the All Progressive Congress (APC) being the party at the centre is also very determined to win back the state.

Both parties are throwing everything into their campaigns in an attempt to court the people. Since politics is a game of numbers, both are neck-deep in de-marketing and cancelling out each other to win the support of the people.

The battle front since Adeleke came to power in 2022, was in the control of the Local Government administration in the state. Both the APC and the PDP fought a bitter war that have left the third tier of government prostrate in the last three years.

However, in the last couple of weeks, the battle ground has shifted to an exercise that should never have been tainted with partisan politics. Few weeks after his assumption of office, Governor Adeleke felt that the wage bill of the state was on the high side. The amount of money that goes into the payment of salaries for public servants in the state as well as what is paid to pensioners monthly was mind boggling. He believed that the Gboyega Oyetola administration from which he took over deliberately created problems for him when he approved the employment of almost 10,000 fresh public servants, including 1,500 teachers few months to the expiration of his tenure.

Earlier in 2022, the Oyetola government had recruited 1,000 teachers, with his Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Mrs. Funke Egbemode, saying that the new teachers would bridge the teacher/pupil ratio in the state. However, the then incoming Adeleke government described the last-minute recruitment as a deliberate plot to expand the payroll and financially cripple his government. Olawale Rasheed, the former Chairman, Media Sub-Committee of the Ademola Adeleke Transition Committee, condemned the recruitment, saying that it was an action disguised to complicate the state’s economy.

It was not only teachers that benefited from the last-minute recruitment by Oyetola’s administration. Employment into Ministries and Agencies such as O-YES, Ministry of Health, and several others were carried out between July, 2022, and November, when Oyetola formerly handed over the reins of government to Adeleke. As expected, one of the first decisions Adeleke took on assumption of office was to issue several Executive Orders, one of which was specifically to nullify all employment made by Oyetola after July 17, 2022. The Executive Order 3 affected all 1,500 teachers recruited in November, 2022, and several others.

The Adeleke government stated that more than 10,000 workers were illegally employed into the state public service and to rectify the situation, another Executive Order (2) was proclaimed by the Governor for an audit of the state’s workforce. Adeleke, in June, 2023, began the audit of the state’s workforce, where his Deputy and the Speaker of the House of Assembly had their biometric captured at the Governor’s office. After the exercise, he met with labour leaders in the state, assuring them that the exercise was not a witch-hunt, but to strengthen the capacity of the state government to satisfy the needs of the workers, members of the public, and the state leadership. ‘’The audit is to achieve several goals namely: cleaning up the payroll system, validating the actual number of the state’s workforce, and establishing areas of vacancies across various sectors of the public service’’, he told the labour leaders.

An internal audit had revealed that over 1000 ghost workers were on the payroll. Not satisfied with the report, the Adeleke administration hired a consultant to carry out a forensic audit. Sally Tibbot Consulting was engaged by the State in May, 2023, to conduct a comprehensive verification and forensic audit of all workers and pensioners drawing salaries from the state. The exercise lasted 12 months, including six months of physical verification across ministries, departments, agencies, local governments, and state-owned institutions. Verification schedules were widely publicised and workers were given sufficient time to appear. At the end of the exercise, the firm said it identified 8,448 workers, while 6,713 pensioners failed to appear for verification and were classified as ghost beneficiaries. It said these names were linked to monthly payments of about N1.14 billion, and an annual loss of N13.7 billion.

The firm submitted its report to Adeleke on July 10, 2024, with the Governor vowing to pursue the public service reform to a logical conclusion. At a ceremony held at the Government House, the lead consultant, Mrs. Saadat Bakrin Ottun, said the staff audit was concluded after due diligence and critical analysis of the data gathered during the auditing exercise. She submitted both the soft and hard copies of the report to the State government, adding that best practices were applied to prepare the report, which contained actionable recommendations for further action by the state government.

Adeleke immediately set up an Action Committee chaired by his Chief of Staff, Kazeem Akinleye, to review and act on the recommendations. The terms of reference of the Committee were to: study the report and assess the recommendations; consider the implications of the recommendations on the public service; take action to implement the recommendations; interface with stakeholders to ensure effective implementation, and consider all other issues related to the subject.

It was at this stage that the smooth working relationship between the state government and the consultant ended, and the waiting game started. Nothing further was heard from the state government on the payment of its 15 per cent commission as well as the installation of the new automated payroll administration system which the consulting firm had developed for the state. Although the state government paid N79 million for the development of the system, it refused to install it after its completion. “After the building of the platform, which was duly and fully paid for, the Osun State Government was notified of readiness for installation and deployment, but the all-powerful Chief-of-Staff to the Governor rejected the APAS and the installation of same without giving any reason. The ostensible reason is the desire by the payroll-fraud cabal to continue with the perpetration of the fraud,” the consulting firm told the media.

Soon enough, both parties went public with the sordid details of the payroll fraud which provided an opportunity for the opposition party, APC, to explore the divide-and-rule politics with the staff audit fiasco. The State Government rejected the “high number of ghost workers’’ discovered by the consulting firm, describing it as a ploy to earn more revenue from the whole exercise, and further alleged that the firm declared the State Governor, the Deputy governor, the Secretary to the State Government, more than two-thirds of political appointees, and a large number of staff of the Osun State University, including most of its principal officers, as ghost workers. The Osun State Government also accused the audit firm of deliberately inflating the number of ghost workers because its payment was tied to the amount of savings generated from the exercise. Official workers alleged that the consultancy firm’s fee arrangement created an incentive to exaggerate figures in order to earn higher remuneration. According to the government, the unusually high number of ghost workers claimed by the firm raised red flags and made it necessary to review the audit report before any implementation. It said it could not accept or act on findings that, in its view, had the potential to further defraud and adding that was the reasons why the state government refused to implement the recommendations of the consulting firm. It later embarked on another re-validation exercise and came up with a new figure that only 1,316 personnel could not be confirmed.

But the consulting firm rejected the government’s revised figures, saying that the state lacked the technical capacity to independently conduct a proper forensic audit, which was why it engaged the consultancy in the first place. The consultant also said the audit uncovered cases where multiple salaries were paid into single bank accounts, and instances where several workers were linked to one bank verification number. It said these findings were clearly documented in the report submitted to the government.

And so it was, that an exercise that was meant to help the state clean up its payroll system became a smear campaign due to partisan politics. The consulting firm has also released to the media, a video recording of its report presentation being made to Dr. Deji Adeleke instead of the Governor and senior government officials. In essence, the firm is alluding to the view in some quarters that it is Dr. Adeleke that is effectively governing the state due, perhaps, to the low capacity of the State Governor to grasp complex matters.

The APC, having smelled blood, is going for the jugular of the state government. With the governorship election already six months away, the party is calling on the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as well as the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to take a cursory look as the Osun Staff payroll for alleged fraud. The party has also called on Adeleke to resign. Adeleke, on his part, has formally written both organizations to investigate and authenticate if there is any padded payroll fraud in the state. Government officials in Osun State are now of the view that the Consulting firm is being sponsored by the APC.

As the August 15 gubernatorial election approaches, it is certain that both parties will throw more darts at each other in a bid to get voters to their side. What is also certain is that the state government needs to come clean on the number of staff on its payroll. The issue of ghost workers is not new in Nigeria, as most government establishments across the country are saddled with the fraudulent practice. Even at the federal level, where the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) is the automated paying system of all federal government establishments, payroll fraud is still very much rampant within it. What both the federal and the Osun State government should do is to ensure that the number of ghost workers in its system is eradicated so that its negative impacts on the economy would be brought to a minimal extent.

See you next week.

Dr Adedeji Adeleke, father of music star, David Adeleke popularly known as Davido, has said although DNA results confirmed no biological relationship, he has continued to fund the education of Anuoluwapo — the girl who claimed Davido is her father — as well as that of her mother.

Davido’s father made this known on Wednesday during a news conference in Lagos.

According to him, the conference was aimed to provide clarifications following purported reports that Anuoluwapo is Davido’s daughter in spite of science proving otherwise via DNA.

He said that he enrolled Anuoluwapo’s mother in the Adeleke University but she dropped out in spite of the fact that she was doing well and was paid N50,000 monthly stipend.

Adedeji said that since he was contacted for help by Anuoluwapo’s aunt, a scientist, he had taken responsibility for the girl’s education and upkeep.

“I told her: ‘Since you are a scientist, please, take the two DNA results and check your niece’s DNA profile on the two different results and see if they are the same and check David’s own from the two different labs and see if they are the same.

“She called me back to say she had already checked but that she needed my help and was not asking me to help the girl as a family member.

“She said she knew that I helped a lot of people to go to school through Springtime Foundation,” he said.

Adedeji said that at any given time, he had no fewer than 3,000 students studying under his scholarship scheme.

He said that the aunt told him to help and sponsor Anuoluwapo’s education, and he did.

“I asked how much her school fees was and she told me, and I sent her a little more than that because she needed to buy a computer and other things.

“Like I said, this aunt, I have never met her before but we have been talking on phone and she is very responsible, kind and nice,” he said.

Adedeji added that he also decided to sponsor Anuoluwapo’s mother’s education at the Adeleke University.

He said the university had a programme for mature adults where they would do work-study programmes and get degrees at the end of their courses.

He said that Anuoluwapo’s mother was enrolled there and given accommodation and N50,000 monthly stipend.

Adedeji, however, said that she dropped out after her second year in the university.

“This is her school records which I cannot show you. Until she left, she had good grades and she was studying English,” he said.

Adedeji stated that in spite of the abandoned scholarship, the education opportunity was still open to her.

Davido’s father said he suspected that Anuoluwapo’s mother dropped out of school to be able to personally take care of her daughter.

“I told the aunt to let Anuoluwapo’s mother know that if she would decide to go back to complete her degree programme, her daughter can be enrolled in Adeleke University High School.

“She would be enrolled in the boarding school on scholarship as well, so that both of them will be in the same area, and the grandmother will not be burdened with taking care of the child,” he said.

These are interesting times in Osun state, a.k.a. “State of the Living Spring”, with governorship elections already slated for August 8, 2026. Noted for its world-class tourist attraction called Osun-Osogbo festival, the Osun-Osogbo Sacred Grove, located in Osogbo, the capital of the state, was recognised, in 2005, by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Osun-Osogbo is celebrated annually for its spiritual significance as a sacred forest dedicated to the Yoruba goddess, Osun, and reportedly represents “one of the last sacred groves of its kind and a vital centre for Yoruba culture and tradition.”

Yearly, thousands of Osun devotees and tourists from far and near flock the grove, reputed for making barren women fruitful. Interestingly, for the three years that I lived and worked in Osogbo (1976 – 1978), I never visited the grove. I am not a friend of rivers – even swimming pools! – and photographs of the Osun grove look weird for my liking!

Osogbo is also noted for its arts, culture, and Yoruba theatre. The Osogbo School of Art was made popular by artists such as Horst Ulrich (Ulli) and Georgina Beier and Susanne Wenger, MFR (a.k.a. Adunni Olorisa). Jimoh Buraimoh, Twin Seven-Seven, Duro Ladipo (Mbari Mbayo Theatre), Oyin Adejobi, Kareem Adepoju (a.k.a. Baba Wande), Lere Paimo (a.k.a. Eda Onileola), Muraina Oyelami, Ifayemi Elebuibon (a.k.a. Araba or Chief Priest), among others, were notable offsprings of the Osogbo school of arts.

It was also here in Osogbo that the marauding forces of Fulani jihadists were routed by Yoruba warriors in 1840 at the famous Battle of Osogbo or Jalumi war. Osun state is made even more popular by its current governor, Ademola Nurudeen Jackson Adeleke. He combines both Christian and Muslim names. He has also been photographed dressed as both. He is the “Dancing governor of Nigeria”; his dance-steps apart, the way he effortlessly carries his huge frame is a delight to watch. Say whatever you like, I love his dance-steps! All work and no play, they say, makes Jack a dull boy. And is it not poetic that the dancing governor is also called Jackson? In an era when all manner of travails threaten to weigh everyone down, we need one form of catharsis or the other. If music, and dance, is it, so be it! “If music be the food of love, play on…” says Duke Orsino in William Shakespeare’s “Twelfth NIght.”

But don’t you ever think Adeleke is all frivolities! Osun people will amaze you with what they call his giant strides in infrastructural development. He is also said to have done away with the Aregbesola half-salary nonsense as well as cleared arrears of salaries and pensions owed to workers and pensioners alike. Recently, however, spanners were thrown in the works for him when trouble arose over the authentic local government administration in the state. The tussle led to a fracas, after which the APC-led Federal Government reportedly seized Osun State Local Government funds pending the time the controversy is resolved by the law courts.

To many, it is ironic that a president who, as the governor of Lagos state, suffered the unjust seizure of Local Government funds by an opposition Federal Government, is the same serving Osun, an opposition state, the same hemlock he fought against with blood and sweat. Twice, the courts have ruled on this matter but have not helped matters.

At the appeal court, the judgment entered was so ambivalent that both sides claimed victory. Self-help efforts by both sides to enforce their own understanding and interpretation of the court judgment led to a breakdown of law and order. Lives were lost in the process.

At the apex court, the technicality recently entered as judgment has left everyone in quandary. When a judgment pleases and displeases at the same time, it is all motion but no movement forward. The other side of the coin is when a motley crowd of SANs – and they don’t come cheap – cannot smell apriori a technical point as trite as the one entered by the Supreme Court in the Osun state local government seized funds saga!

In a matter of days, Adeleke has to decide, and announce, his new party. With PDP in disarray, the governor’s next platform is still a closely-kept secret, although kites are being flown right, left and centre. The unfolding crisis in APC may, however, be a silver lining on the horizon for Adeleke. Rather than resolve the issue of its flagbearer, the just-concluded Osun APC governorship primaries has split the party down the middle.

Seven out of nine aspirants were reportedly disqualified, leaving the field wide open for only two contestants, one of whom is just to fulfil all righteousness. The Group of Seven is threatening hail and brimstone. Where the pendulum will tilt remains to be seen. One thing is certain: There will be a realignment of forces. Hitherto strange bedfellows are likely to become partners of convenience, if only for the purpose of the coming election.

Osun may be one of Nigeria’s smallest states but its importance is in the fact that it is the widely-accepted birthplace of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. In the 2023 presidential election, Tinubu lost the state to PDP’s Atiku Abubakar, due largely to the fact that the sitting governor, Adeleke, was PDP. With PDP’s factionalization, Adeleke has announced his exit from the party.

Not long ago, rumours were rife that the dancing governor was on the way to joining the gale of defection into APC. When some important members of the Adeleke family were photographed in meetings with President Tinubu, the rumour gained currency still, but informed sources later revealed that some important APC leaders thwarted the defection move, forcing Gov. Adeleke to stay back in PDP, until his recent resignation from it.

Marxists posit that what is constant in motion is change; they are right. Politicians are allies today and foes tomorrow. The person whose fortunes you help today may be the same who stabs you in the back tomorrow. It is said that in 1999, the form purchased by Chief Iyiola Omisore was the same that was handed over to Chief Bisi Akande to fill, with Omisore compelled to be his running mate. The agreement, I learnt, was that Omisore would succeed Akande, but before the end of their first term in office, they fell apart and Omisore was hurried out of office. Chief Bola Ige, who was the godfather of both, and Omisore also parted ways. To this day, Chief Akande is said to be one of those unrepentantly opposed to Omisore’s governorship ambition.

In 2018 when Nurudeen Adeleke (PDP), then a senator, contested the Osun state governorship election against Adegboyega Isiaka Oyetola (APC), he almost won, if not that the election was controversially declared inconclusive. Omisore became “the beautiful bride” in that election when the areas where elections were deemed inconclusive fell within his strongholds. Would he support his partyman, Adeleke? He did not, the bitter blood of the party primaries where Adeleke upended him was too strong to ignore. Besides, he was said to have found the carrots dangled before him by the APC-controlled Federal Government too tempting to ignore. So, he pitched his tent with APC’s Oyetola and helped APC win, to the chagrin of his party, PDP, and its candidate, Adeleke.

Adeleke went back to school to make up for the blight that had trailed his educational qualifications, and bounced back four years later. Helped by the schism that had surfaced between Oyetola and his former boss, Rauf Aregbesola on the one hand, and the parting of ways between Aregbesola and his own godfather, Tinubu, on the other, Adeleke trounced Oyetola, denying him the opportunity of a second term in office.

Opinion is divided on whether Oyetola as governor implemented all the agreements himself and APC reached with Omisore. Now, it is the same Oyetola that has been fingered as the brain behind the disqualification of Omisore from the Osun APC governorship primaries. Will Omisore accept his fate as a loyal party man, stay back in the party, queue behind its candidate and ensure victory for the party in the coming governorship election? Chances are he will not! Already, the disqualified contestants have formed a pressure group and are threatening to let all hell loose except the party revisits their case.

In the likely event that the party does not, what options do they have? Some will be wooed or corralled back into the party. The support of some will be bought. The silence of others will be enforced. For the average Nigerian politician, the fear of EFCC is the beginning of wisdom! Will Omisore once again seek another platform to contest the election? Or will he join forces with Adeleke this time around – if only to teach some folks a lesson? Time, as they say, will tell!

It is difficult to say which side President Tinubu will take. His good fortune, however, might be that all the Osun combatants are his – Adeleke, Oyetola, and Omisore. So, it appears a win-win situation for him. He might, therefore, play neutral and allow anyone to carry the day. He might as well play the Muhammadu Buhari card: Tell the Osun electorate to vote for whoever they prefer in the governorship election but vote for him, Tinubu, as president! The name of the game is enlightened self-interest!

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun has emerged as the candidate of the Accord Party for the August 8, 2026 governorship election in the state.

Adeleke, the sole aspirant of the Accord Party, polled 145 votes out of 150 cast during the party’s primary, monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, on Wednesday in Osogbo.

The chairperson of the Electoral Committee, Mrs Mariam Saleh, who announced the result, said that five votes were invalid.

Saleh, represented by the secretary of the committee, Mr Abdulazeez Salaudeen, said that the primary was conducted in line with the party’s guidelines.

“I hereby declare Governor Ademola Adeleke as the candidate of the Accord Party for the coming August  8, 2026 governorship election in the state,” she said.

Saleh urged party members to leverage the primary’s smooth conduct as proof that the party offers the strongest platform for aspiring politicians.

“Our candidate is a man of honour, integrity and strength to win the governorship election.

“The Accord Party remains a stronghold, and we will continue to expand in the political space of the country.

“We must all support the party to emerge victorious in the coming election,” she added.

The national chairman of the party, Mr Maxwell Ngbudem, presented the party’s certificate of return to Adeleke as the flag bearer.

Ngbudem appreciated the electoral committee and the INEC for monitoring the primary.

He expressed optimism that the party would emerge victorious in the coming election.

In his acceptance speech, Adeleke thanked the party and the electoral committee for conducting a peaceful primary.

The governor urged all the party’s supporters and the electorate in the state to cast their votes for the Accord Party in the election.

“It is with a deep sense of appreciation to the delegates and to Almighty God that I accept my nomination and election as the governorship candidate of the Accord Party for the 2026 governorship election.

“My candidacy signals the sustenance of the golden movement, as the light of development continues to shine across our state. We vow never to relent in rendering service to our people,” he said.

Adeleke said that, if elected, he would prioritise citizens’ and workers’ welfare, infrastructure consolidation for economic prosperity, and increased agro‑industrial expansion for youth empowerment.

He also said he would promote innovation in health, education, social welfare and an improved business environment for job creation.

Adeleke, on Tuesday night, announced his defection to the Accord Party.

Adeleke said that he had joined the Accord Party more than a month ago to seek re‑election.

The governor resigned his membership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on December 2.

The governor of Osun State, Ademola Adeleke, has announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to Accord Party, AP.

Adeleke made the announcement on Tuesday at the Banquet Hall of the Government House on Tuesday.

He however said that he joined the party on November 6, and planned to seek re-election as governor of Osun State in 2026 on the platform.

His choice, according to him, was based on its “mission of welfarism” which he said was in consonance with his focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare.

“In accordance with the will of our stakeholders and to accord deep respect for the wishes of Osun people, I hereby accordingly declare for the Accord Party,” he stated.

Said he: “I joined the Accord Party more than a month ago, precisely on November 6, as a platform to seek re-election in 2026. This was after weeks of consultation and deliberations with stakeholders and opinion leaders.

“Stakeholders and residents of Osun state are aware of why we are taking this important decision. We intend to pursue a second term in office on the platform of the Accord Party to complete ongoing delivery of good governance and democratic dividends, which have been applauded at home and abroad.

“We opted for the Accord Party because its mission of welfarism aligns with our passionate focus on citizens’ and workers’ welfare.”

He added: “I welcome our party leaders into the Osun State Government House. You are now part of us, as I am also now part of you. We are united in progress and good intentions for the good people of Osun State and Nigeria at large.

“At this historical point, our task is to sustain a united front as we prepare for the elections. We have a duty to ensure an inclusive leadership where the interests of all groups are cared for. Our party, Accord Party, is here to take over Osun governance and sustain the delivery of good governance in our dear state.

“Since I joined the party more than a month ago, I have been fascinated by the philosophy of this great party. The focus on people’s welfare should always be at the heart of public leadership. The primary essence of a government is the welfare and well-being of the people.

“As a governor, I have prioritised the welfare of our people, from workers to the entire citizenry. Day and night, we implement policies and programmes to elevate the well-being of our people. From infrastructure to social services, Osun has never had it so good in governance and service delivery.

“Today, we unveil the new platform for the good people of Osun State. From Osun West to Osun East to Osun Central, this is our party, our new platform for victory come August next year.

“From Igbomina to Ijeshaland to Ifeland to Osogbo to Iwoland to Modakeke to Gbongan to Igbajo to Ikire to Ikirun to Ede and other lands of Osun state, we must thumb up according to our collective desires for good governance.

“Osun voted for good governance in 2022 and they will support continuity in 2026. The mass of our people are for continuity and Accord is our party for victory next year.”

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun has imposed a 24‑hour curfew on Igbajo town in Boluwaduro local government area of the state.

A statement by the state Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, Mr Kolapo Alimi, on Monday in Osogbo, said the curfew was due to a breakdown of law and order in the town overnight.

Alimi said the governor’s decision followed an intelligence report from the office of his Special Adviser on Security.

The commissioner added that the crisis in the town had been linked to the death of a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chairman in the state, Adegboyega Famodun.

He said the curfew would take effect immediately and would remain until total peace was attained.

Alimi said the governor condemned the development and warned that his administration would not be a party to any untoward civil disobedience capable of truncating the existing peace and harmony in the state.

He said the governor also issued a stern warning to all natives and non‑natives of Igbajo to continue to toe the path of peace and orderliness.

Alimi added that anyone caught plunging the town into chaos would be dealt with in line with the dictates of the law.

“It is with deep shock and dismay that I received the sad news of the breakdown of law and order in Igbajo last night until the early hours of today.

“As a government that believes in total compliance with the rule of law, my administration will not fold its arms to allow the breach of law and order anywhere in the state.

“Therefore, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, I declare with immediate effect a total lockdown of the town pending the return of orderliness.

“With effect from today, a contingent of security personnel comprising the army, the police, the Department of State Security Service (DSS) and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) should take charge by maintaining 24‑hour surveillance in Igbajo.

“I once again, as I had earlier done following the announcement of Famodun’s demise, commiserate with the family and the people of Igbajo over the sad loss of a dear son.

“May his gentle soul rest in perfect peace,” the statement quoted the governor as saying.

The Gbeleru Royal Family of Igbajo on Sunday announced Famodun’s death.

The announcement was made by his son, David Famodun, on behalf of the family, in a statement.

According to the statement, Famodun died on November 28 after a brief illness at the age of 67.

The late Famodun, who was installed as the 30th Owa of Igbajo by former governor, Gboyega Oyetola, was removed in 2022 by Governor Ademola Adeleke.

On March  12, 2024, the state government approved the appointment of Ademola Makinde as the new Owa of Igbajo, replacing the late Famodun.

President Bola Tinubu at the weekend assured Nigerians that his administration would continue to roll out several initiatives to support Nigerians as part of its broader economic recovery agenda.

The president delivered the message at the 10th General Assembly of the Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria, MUSWEN, held at the Bola Babalakin Auditorium in Gbongan, Osun State.

Tinubu, represented by the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, listed several measures, including financial support schemes, job creation programmes, palliatives, and policies introduced by his administration to encourage innovation and creativity.

He also emphasised the need for economic diversification, particularly through improved access to quality and functional education that aligns with the modern, technology-driven global economy.

According to the president, with discipline and focus, Nigeria can chart a new course toward prosperity.

Encouraging Nigerians to rise above current frustrations and leverage the “vast oasis of opportunities” available within the economy, the president said Nigerians must become agents of transformational change rather than succumb to despair.

“…We have introduced the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), N-Power reforms and skill acquisition, NANO grants, Conditional Cash Transfer ranging from ₦50,000 to ₦1,000,000, the upward review of NYSC monthly allowance from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, minimum wage from ₦30,000 to ₦70,000, food security measures, and Compressed Natural Gas (CNG),” he said.

The president commended MUSWEN for creating a platform to discuss how Muslims can navigate and benefit from the administration’s reforms.

“There is the need to open economic frontiers; we have decided to prioritize functional and qualitative education,” he said.

Tinubu also urged Nigerians to view security as a shared responsibility, noting that improved safety is essential for attracting foreign investment and delivering good governance.

The Sultan of Sokoto and President-General, Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, Alhaji Mohammed Sa’ad Abubakar, urged Nigerians to be united and not allow themselves to be divided by external forces.

The Sultan who condemned the killings by terrorists and bandits across the country, called on security agencies to deal decisively with criminals irrespective of their religion or tribe.

The Sultan said: “There have been a lot of talks about Genocide, but I’ve said it and I keep saying it, I’ve never seen it or heard of a Christian denied his right to worship.

“We are living in harmony and we are not going to allow anybody to come and break us. We should not judge anyone. What we can do is to try to be the best we can be.

“Those killing people are not Muslims but criminals and I want to urge the security operatives to apprehend and deal decisively with criminals irrespective of their religion or tribe.”

The Sultan, who urged Nigerians to pray for President Tinubu and other leaders to successfully discharge their responsibilities, also congratulated MUSWEN for being an umbrella body promoting unity and dialogue among muslims in the southwest and urged other zones to emulate them.

The Keynote speaker and Nasarawa State Governor, Engineer Abdullahi Sule, said the theme of the event, “Nigeria’s Economy: Any Hope for the Masses?” aligned with the federal and state governments’ commitment to build a better country.

“President Bola Tinubu is bold and courageous to formulate sound economic policies, fiscal ingenuity, bold reforms implementation, strategic long-term plan, private sector partnership,” Sule said.

Listing the many innovative projects of his administration, including in developing a thriving economy around the state’s mining assets, Sule urged other state governments to build on their comparative advantages to deliver infrastructure, complete major projects and improve living standards.

He said the increased revenue allocation to states made it mandatory for state executives to improve the well being of their citizens.

“You can see the positive aspects of the renewed hope economic reforms from the prices of food items and inflation. Inflation went over 30 per cent but today, inflation is getting down to about 20 per cent and the target is to go through a one digit inflation figure.

“This is the direction that we are going. You will see the stabilisation of the FX and the price of petroleum products right now. All these are positive indicators that the reforms are working.

“I want to urge the Muslim Ummah to continue to work together, care for each other and do everything possible to support this government,” Sule said.

Governor of Osun State and host of the programme, Senator Ademola Adeleke, represented by the Commissioner for Information, Alhaji Kolapo Alimi, encouraged Nigerians to promote peace and religious harmony.

He appealed to clerics to avoid preaching violence or extremism and instead pray for political leaders to succeed.

He also called on security agencies to be proactive, saying activities of terrorists in Kwara State was a source of worry to the government.

Alimi also announced that all religious marriages conducted in Osun State had been given the back of the law.

Chairman of the MUSWEN Board of Trustees, Dr. Wale Babalakin, urged Muslims to uphold integrity and invest in education.

According to Babalakin, the government would need to invest about 50 per cent of its annual budget in education over the next 20 years for it to raise youth able to meet 21st-century job market needs.

The president of MUSWEN, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, said President Tinubu’s administration should be commended for its efforts at poverty reduction and improvement in primary healthcare delivery.

He, however, urged the federal government to spend more on roads, railways and housing.

He said, “Tinubu Administration has stabilized the Nigerian economy with the implementation of his bold but painful economic reforms which have attracted global investors. These include the removal of fuel subsidies, merging of the multiple exchange rates windows into a single market rate and implementation of new measures by the Monetary Authorities to strengthen corporate governance and stabilze the Naira.

“On a good note the federal government should be commended for its efforts at poverty reduction and improvement in primary healthcare delivery. Pensions for direct benefit recipients have been increased while the number on the National Health Insurance Program has increased dramatically to 60 million people. However, government still needs to spend more on roads, railways and housing.”

Oladejo also named Professor Wole Abass as the new Executive Secretary of MUSWEN, following the completion of Professor Muslih Yahya’s six-year tenure.

“The 11th General Assembly will be organized by MUSWEN headquarters and held in Ibadan next year,” Oladejo said.

During the event, 12 medical students across the six Southwest states were awarded scholarships under the Sultan Abubakar Female Medical Students Scholarship Scheme.

The MUSWEN president said the organisation planned to increase the Bursary Awards to 120 deserving students from the region in 2016, adding that the goal was to increase the figure to 600 annually.

Cheques for this year’s scholarship awards and the laptops were distributed by the Sultan, who was Special Guest of Honour at the event.

He was assisted by Alhaji Isiaka Gboyega Oyetola; Chairman Board of Trustees of MUSWEN, Dr. Abdul-Rauf ‘Wale Babalakin, and Deputy President I of MUSWEN, Alhaji Rafiu Adisa Ebiti, FCA.

The founder of Ile-Ogbo Golf Course, Engr. Olanrewaju Abel Adeleke, his wife, Barrister Udochukwu Adeleke, former Osun State Governor, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Khamis Tunde Badmus have called for private sector participation in sports promotion and development in the country.

The concerned veteran golfers made the call at the special sport tournament tagged “Independence Golf Kitty 2025” organized and sponsored by the management of LanreLeke Sports Academy, Ile-Ogbo, Ayedire local government area, Osun State.

Speaking during the event, Engr. Olanrewaju Adeleke advocated improved participation in sports by more Nigerians to complement government efforts saying “for Nigeria to compete effectively globally, all hands must be on deck to support government at all levels.”

READ ALSO: Two years of Adedeji at FIRS: A raft of achievements

“Today is Independence Day and for us here at LanreLeke Sports Academy, we celebrate the day with an annual golf kitty. We have competitions here to bring out the best from our people, both the professionals and the amateurs. We also have the kitty refresher course for golfers to encourage bonding among golfers.

“To advance sports in the country, there is a need for more private sector participation in addition to government intervention. LanreLeke Sports Academy has young Nigerians in SS1 to SS3 taking courses in different sports like athletics, football, basketball, handball, Volleyball, among others.

“We started with 20 members but today we have 105. The Academy is run by membership subscription and sponsorship.

“We have seasoned personnel trained within and outside this country managing this course and whatever challenges we have encountered we have been able to tackle frontally with the experienced management in place.

“While it is incumbent on the government to create enabling environment, it is private sector participation that will create more opportunities in sports,” Adeleke advocated.

Former governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola applauded the management of LanreLeke Sports Academy for their consistency and commitment to promoting sports in the country.

He said: “The reason for being part of this event is to identify with the efforts of Engr Adeleke in the promotion of sports in Osun and Nigeria, especially the game of golf. As an individual, the establishment of an academy here where the old are being taught and young ones are learning, there is no magic to producing world stars if not through this kind of effort.

“We want to bring awareness to every Nigerian that there is a part to play in the promotion of sports in the country. No magic-wand will produce world stars but where there are facilities of this nature to groom our budding talents to represent us at world events so as to bring honour to our country. There is no magic to achieving success in sports other than what this academy is doing.

“Today we have Sunday Olapade who is a renowned golfer in the world and first in Africa. If not what the likes of Chief Tunde Ponle and Adeleke are doing, no one knows that a world class sportsman can come from there.”

Asiwaju Musulumi of Yorubaland, Edo and Delta States, Alhaji Tunde Badmus, also extolled the founder of LanreLeke Sports Academy for promoting sports in the country and beyond saying “we are proud of the tremendous contributions of this academy to local, national and international sporting activities.”

The co-founder, LanreLeke Sports Academy, Barrister (Mrs) Udochukwu Adeleke, said the purpose of the annual sports tournament was to celebrate the independence day with utmost goal of advancing sports in the country.

“We always have a golf tournament on a significant day like this where we have champions all over the country come for the tournament. Apart from the golf course, we also have educational facilities here, we have a world class secondary school.

“As you can see, indigent students are here. Many of them are on scholarship and it is our own way of giving back to humanity. We have realized that people depend so much on government, that is why we have been doing this to give back to the society. We have a Non-Governmental Organization to support health sector too,” she stated.

The event was attended by notable golfers and sports stars such as, former Deputy Governor, Mr Benedict Alabi; Speaker, Osun State House of Assembly, Hon. Wale Egbedun; Justice Jide Falola (rtd.); world football legend, Mutiu Adepoju; Navy Captain Lateef Kolawole Jimoh (rtd.); Justice Kola Adegoke, Oba Dairo Jacob Olutayo, among others.
