By SUNDAY SAANU

Every November 17th is the University of Ibadan (UI) Foundation Day Anniversary and grand finale of convocation ceremonies. This year’s 77th anniversary was not without its thrills and frills.

For me, one of the memorable moments I would continue to treasure was the tacit but significant honour accorded me by the University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale during the final convocation ceremony in which he was to shake hands with 487 PhDs including my humble self.

Hitherto, my story had gone viral as many people had saluted what they called uncommon academic resilience and doggedness, having moved from Higher National Diploma (H.N.D) to Master of Communication Arts (M.C.A), a professional Master degree, back to Bachelor of Arts (B.A) to Master of Arts, (M.A) and now to Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D) Cultural and Media Studies.

The tradition at an occasion like this is that, all graduates will file out in a single line to shake hands with the Vice Chancellor, take a bow and pass. This was the ritual we were observing when I stumbled on this special honour. When it was my turn, Prof. Adebowale held my hand, looked at me and smiled. I bowed and wanted to leave, but he would not allow me. He held my hand and drew me closer. “Which Department did you do your doctoral studies?”, he joyfully asked.

“Institute of African Studies, Sir”, I replied with a sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. While this was going on, of course, other Ph.Ds behind me waited anxiously for the V-C to get done with this guy, wondering what the V-C was telling me. The moment the VC said, “Congratulations, I am proud of you”. I turned to go back to my assigned seat where my name and topic of my doctoral study had been pasted, the V-C lovingly pulled back my gown, saying, “stay here, let us take photographs” I felt elated and highly honoured.

Nobody can acquire honour by doing what is wrong. You will never do anything in this world without courage. Courage is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor. All I ever did in all these academic voyages was to demonstrate courage. I faced different dimensions of challenge, but I remained stoic. However, I am ever grateful to Prof. Adebowale for this rare honour. Interestingly, this was not the first time Prof. Adebowale would be specially honouring me. In 2023 when I was to go to Ajayi Crowther University for a sabbatical, he honoured me with his kind intervention. When I returned from sabbatical, he hosted me in his office and said he was proud of my performance and the report he got about me while I was in Oyo, saying, “Saanu, you really represented UI well with the report I got about you”

For his words of encouragement and validation at different times, I can’t be less grateful for all he has been able to do for me. He is a marvelous leader who always acts in a fashion of a gentleman. He is very respectful. I saw him on an occasion, bowing to greet an alumnus. I later humbly suggested to him to stop bowing because of his position. He looked at me with a smirk, saying, ” Saanu, position a tan n’jokan. Bowing to greet people does not matter to me. That is how we were raised: to be humble and respectful”

Dear amiable V-C, thanks so much for the recognition and honour you accorded me. I value it and treasure you. May your days be long in peace and prosperity.

Old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, Lagos, have launched a campaign to ensure the return of the school to the old order whereby it is made up of both junior and senior secondary schools.

At present, the school is made up of Lagos Baptist Senior Secondary School, Orile Agege, and Lagos Baptist Senior College, Orile Agege, Lagos.

This is opposed to the old form where the school is one, with junior and secondary school together in one premises.

Tagged “Give us back our school,” the old students largely made up of the 1982 and 1984 sets chose the recent inauguration of the multi-million Naira interlocking of the assembly ground of the school carried out by old students in the Diaspora, to launch the campaign.

Present at the occasion among other officials of the education district to which the school belongs is Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale.

Launching the campaign, the president of the 1984 set of the old students, Mr. Benjamin Akindele, called on the state government to restore the old order.

According to him, the Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, that the old students attended was made up of both junior and secondary school and not two separate senior secondary schools housed in the same premises.

Addressing the state government represented by the Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale, Akindele declared that the school was already being decimated through the cancellation of the junior secondary school, thus restricting the support the old students wanted to give.

READ ALSO: Tinubu’s tax reform bills, the rich and state governors

He therefore called on the state government to bring back the junior secondary school and put an end to the destruction of the order which they, as students, passed through.

His words: “Give us back our school. What happened to the original setting which had the junior and secondary school as one? The school, as it is presently constituted, is not our school! We want our school back. Give us back our school.”

Returning the school to the old form, Akindele emphasized, would give enough room for the old students to carry out the necessary interventions needed to make the school better.

Responding to the charge, the Tutor General explained that the new order was occasioned by the exigencies of the time.

According to him, the division of the school into two was a strategy to enable the state conveniently cater for the growing number of students.

He said Lagos, being a city with an ever increasing population as a result of the migration from other states of the federation, required some level of creativity to be able to accommodate more students.

“The creation of additional schools becomes very necessary, and that is why another school was created within,” he said.

He pointed out that the situation was not peculiar to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, but many other schools in the state.

Akindele, however, sought audience with the Tutor General, saying members of the old students association would like to meet him to find a way of bringing back the old system whereby the school would be made up of junior and secondary school as was the case in the 1980s.

On occasion of its 76th Foundation Day Anniversary, the University of Ibadan has decided to establish the Wole Soyinka Institute in honour of one of its illustrious alumni, the Nobel laureate, Oluwole Akinwande Babatunde Soyinka, the poet, dramatist, essayist, human and civil rights activist, famously called the Global Humanist.

The announcement of the university’s council decision was made by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Oyebode Adebowale, on Tuesday, November 19 after the Special Command of Soyinka’s latest, play: “CANTICLES: A Pyre Foretold,” at the decades-old Wole Soyinka Theatre (formerly Arts Theatre).

The 50-man cast play, directed by Tunde Awosanmi (Phd), former Head of Department of Theatre Arts, had earlier been premiered on November 17 as the year’s Convocation Play.

According to the VC, the institute is designed to “serve the global community in research, performance, teaching and exchange endeavours on Soyinka’s, life, works and ideas related to him.”

He said Soyinka, being an alumnus of the university, the establishing the Institute in his honour is his “Alma Mater’s way of celebrating and immortalising him”.

Continued the VC, “For our institution, the Wole Soyinka Institute shall function as a window of seeing the world through new prisms. The institute shall be a platform for renegotiating global status for our nation, the African continent and the entire black humanity. It shall midwife global discourses that are as fierce and at the same time are as humanising as the politics, ideology, philosophy and ideas of the legend, Wole Soyinka. Through the gravitation of the minds and psyche of young thinkers and researchers across races, the institute shall be Africa’s major contribution to the intellectual understanding of the human race into centuries to come.”

The VC praised the prowess of Soyinka as a creative thinker, philosopher and fighter for the civil and human rights of individuals as well as the collective.

Tracing Soyinka’s footprints in the university community and linking same to his global accomplishments, including being the very first African Nobel laureate, the VC, said though Soyinka has been widely celebrated across the globe since he turned 90 in July 13, the University of Ibadan “insists on having its own celebration of Professor Wole Soyinka’s attainment of the nonagenarian decade.

“He means so much to our university. He is not just one of our institution’s most visible products, he has brought the highest recognition to the University of Ibadan and gave her an exceptional place on the global map of academic and creative reckoning. The announcement of Professor Wole Soyinka in 1986 by the Nobel Foundation as the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature, and as the first African to have won the award, topped the numerous honours which he has brought to his Alma Mater.”

Professor Soyinka, who was also conferred with the PINK International Award at the event by the Veronica Isioma Joei-led La Veronica Magazine, thanked the Vice Chancellor and the university community for the recognition, restating his enduring commitment to the cause of humanity.

He also praised the presentation of his play by the students of the university, reiterating that he was not surprised at the quality performance as the University of Ibadan is known for “quality productions and outputs.”

…The PINK International Award

Titled ‘Life time Achievement Award for Literary Excellence and Social Impact’, the PINK Award was presented by Dr Joe Odumakin, president of WOMEN ARISE for CHANGE and promoter of the Pink International Award, supported by the initiator Dr Veronica Okei and the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale.

In her remarks, Princess (Dr) Veronica Okei said her organisation decided to confer its 11th anniversary and 6th Annual Award on Soyinka because he represents the core values for which the magazine and awards were set up: “A symbol of excellence, a source of inspiration, and a testament to what can be achieved when passion, dedication and talent come together.”

In presenting the award to Soyinka, Dr Odumakin traced the Nobel laureate’s “over 60-decades of activism even at great sacrifices and grave personal risks.”

She said Soyinka’s personality and career in writing and activism, epitomise core values of revolution — Resistance, Resilience and sheer commitment to the protection of the rights of the individual in the society, as well as the survival of our collective humanity.”

…CANTICLES for a Pyre Foretold

CANTICLES… was written by Soyinka while serving as a Scholar and Teacher of Performing Arts at the New York University, Abu Dhabi.

The play had also been performed by the students of the school as directed by the head of the department of Performing Arts at the school, Professor Joanna Settle, who had visited Nigeria in July to conduct research into the world of Soyinka’s dramaturgy.

In his authorial preface to the play, which is heavily critical of religious extremism and bigotry, especially as witnessed in Nigeria in recent years, says, “CANTICLES is a narrative of the logical end of such toleration, where it becomes unremarkable to kill, instigate killing, bless the act and beatify the killers, then jet off to Paris, Dubai or Singapore with your family for a vacation, confident in the workings of this superstitious claim on solidarity… however, it is not an indictment of just one national instance of a serial, moral dereliction. It is a question thrown at the human claim to rational existence, and a “fundamentalist” pact of solidarity with the sanctity of every human life.”

Lagos State government has applauded the old students of Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, for their immense contributions to their alma mater.

The Tutor General of District 1, Prince Bashir Adebowale gave the applause on behalf of the state government on Thursday at the inauguration of the multi-million Naira interlocking of the assembly ground of the school carried out by the old students in the Diaspora.

The interlocked assembly ground has flowers planted in some strategic positions, adding to its beauty and creating a conducive environment.

The newly inaugurated facility is one of many interventions carried out by the old students, especially, the 1982 and 1984 sets.

The Tutor General said the government was well aware of all the contributions of the old students to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege.

“No alumni have done half of what you have done,” he declared.

“We thank you sincerely for all you have done. We are not taking them for granted,” he added.

The Tutor General emphasized the importance of the interventions of the old students, asserting that government alone could not shoulder the responsibilities of providing all the required facilities for good education.

He therefore urged the old students to do more to support the government.

He advised that beyond providing infrastructure, the old students should mentor the students as that would also contribute to their success and growth in life.

Prince Bashir Adebowale spoke about the efforts of the Lagos State government towards improving the educational standard in Lagos through the allocation of the largest budget to education, to the envy of other ministries.

He said the decision of the government to give education the largest budget was in pursuit of the determination to make Lagos a centre of excellence in the education sector, not only in Nigeria, but Africa.

He said the efforts were already yielding fruits as students and teachers of Lagos schools, particularly in District 1, to which Lagos Baptist Secondary School belongs, have won several laurels even beyond the shores of Nigeria.

“Schools in District 1 have been doing well, year in year out,” the Tutor General declared.

Earlier in his welcome address at the occasion, the Managing Director/ Editor-in-Chief of FrontPage (online newspaper), Mr. Sakibu Olokojobi, who spoke for members of the old students in the Diaspora, called on the state government to do more for the school.

He reasoned that with the number of interventions carried out by the old students, the least the government could do to encourage them was to do more for Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege, in terms of structure and recreational facilities.

His words: “We are aware of the support this school has enjoyed from the government. But have we got enough of government’s support?! No! The government can do more through its Special Committee on Rehabilitation of Public Schools, SCRPS, headed by Mr. Hakeem Smith…

“We like to use this opportunity to tell the governor and Mr. Smith that they should please shift attention to Lagos Baptist Secondary School, Orile Agege. We have enough ground for a good and standard football field, race tracks, lawn tennis court and more.”

While speaking at the occasion, the principal of the school, Mrs Shofela Florence Modupe, expressed sincere gratitude to the old students.

He said they had been of immense support to the success of the school in different ways, praying God Almighty to increase His blessings in the lives.

She was also full of praises for the Tutor General saying that his support had been invaluable and source of the feats achieved by the school.

The Tutor General declared the assembly ground open for use.

A high point of the occasion was the school’s award to Engr. Rafiu Atolagbe, who single-handedly settled the accumulated electricity bill of the school and provided mult-million naira solar-powered electricity for the school.

The 1982 and 1984 sets of the old students were also presented with awards in appreciation of their kind gesture through laudable projects.

Mrs. Kemi Okoh (1982 set) was particularly commended at the occasion by all for her leading role in the actualisation of the project of interlocking the assembly ground which was inaugurated.

It would be recalled that in 2022, the 1982 set on the occasion of their 40 years anniversary of leaving school renovated some classrooms and provided some education facilities in the Lagos Baptist Senior College arm of the school.

Similarly, the 1984 set of the old students, some weeks ago carried out the renovation of the school’s laboratory and provided necessary equipment.

The compere at the occasion was Apostle Bolaji Akinyemi while the 1984 set of the old students was led by its current president, Mr. Benjamin Akindele.

The occasion was well attended by members of the 1982 and 1984 sets.

The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Kayode Egbetokun, has said that the Nigeria Police Force will soon establish a full drone system to tackle the nation’s security challenges adequately.

Egbetokun said this while delivering the first distinguished Personality Lecture, organised by the TETFUND Centre of Excellence in Multidisciplinary Studies, TCEMS, University of Ibadan, UI, on Monday in Ibadan.

The lecture was titled: “The Nigeria Police Force and the Management of Internal Security.”

Egbetokun said although the force already had a drone, it would now establish a full drone system to capture everywhere in Nigeria from its headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, the drone system would also help the police see criminals whenever they might be committing crimes.

“The ungoverned spaces will soon become governed,” he said.

He further said the force would establish a Special Intervention Squad, SIS, in all the states of the federation to tackle kidnapping, banditry and other forms of criminality in Nigeria.

The police boss said the deployment of the SIS in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, had yielded results leading to the arrest of many kidnappers and bandits, including the recovery of weapons.

READ ALSO: Kogi: Army hands over eight rescued students to governor

The I-G said the force had also established dedicated anti-kidnapping units across various states, focusing on intelligence gathering and rapid responses to kidnapped incidents.

The units, he said, had successfully conducted numerous rescue operations leading to the safe return of kidnapped victims and the arrest of perpetrators.

Egbetokun highlighted the shortage of manpower, inadequate equipment, public distrust and insufficient budgetary provisions as some of the challenges facing the force.

He, however, pledged the force’s commitment to the protection of lives and property of citizens.

In his remarks, the Vice-Chancellor of UI, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, commended the I-G for his visionary leadership in managing the nation’s security challenges.

Also, the acting Director of TCEMS, Dr Benjamin Aluko, said the lecture was organised to elicit constructive discussions that would reshape the country’s security situation.

The federal government has announced the reversal of the implementation of payment of 40 per cent of Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, from Nigerian universities to the government.

President Bola Tinubu made the announcement at the 75th anniversary and 2023 convocation ceremonies of the University of Ibadan on Tuesday.

Tinubu, who was represented at the event by the Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, said the ministry of finance had been engaged to stop the circular for the implementation.

“We know that this law was enacted in 2020 and the circular was issued in 2021, but this is not a good time for such policy,” he said.

Tinubu reiterated its commitment to the education sector in line with the 2030 education agenda of the government and African Union goal 2063.

He said, “The federal government is bringing more innovation to reform the entire education sector for curriculum review at all levels from primary to basic education with the reintroduction of skills to attend to out-of-school menace.”

The president noted that the introduction of students’ loans was to ensure that no student was left out of education due to poverty.

Tinubu stated that he was aware of the problem of industrial disputes of the past, hence his administration would pay attention to issues of welfare and all factors generating industrial disputes.

In his address, the Chancellor of UI and Emir of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar, congratulated the university for its notable achievements in the last 75 years.

He noted that the celebration also called for reflection on the impact of the university on the communities as knowledge from the universities must benefit the communities and Nigeria through quality research.

Abubakar stated that public service had failed compared to what obtained 50 years ago, adding that universities must rise up to salvage the state of public service through quality graduates.

Earlier in his address, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, noted the contributions of the university charging the graduands not to rest on their oars.

Adebowale said that a total of 6,865 graduands received first degrees in various disciplines across 17 faculties, 2,842 received Academic Masters Degree, 131 postgraduate Diplomas and 25 Masters of Philosophy.

The VC said a total of 722 graduands from various disciplines were awarded Doctor of Philosophy degrees and Prof. Mayowa Owolabi was awarded Doctor of Science, a higher doctorate degree.

“The university will not relent in its resolve to be the flagship of postgraduate studies in the nation,” Adebowale said.

Four Nigerians were awarded honorary doctoral degrees.

They are Dr Daisy Danjuma, Dr Abdusamad Rabiu, Dr Kessington Adebutu and Dr Solomon Oladunni.

The University of Ibadan, UI, has awarded Bachelor’s Degree to popular Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, and other students who satisfied its graduation criteria.

The second day of the 2023 convocation ceremony of the institution had 1,590 first degree graduands from eight faculties.

The faculties included those of Agriculture, Social Sciences, Education, Pharmacy, Veterinary Medicine and Technology.

Osupa, whose real name is Akorede Babatunde Okunola, while speaking on his feat, commended the institution for the comprehensive training he had in the Department of Political Science.

He said it would help him to maximise his potential.

The Fuji musician who finished with a Second Class Honours in the Upper Division said the void in his heart had just been filled with the academic feat.

“Now I am feeling fulfilled. Before, I felt that there is something missing in my life.

“Then, I don’t want to be segregated anywhere I go. I want to fit into everywhere I find myself.”

In her lecture at the occasion, Dr Osasuyi Dirisu, an alumnus of UI and Executive Director, Policy Innovation Centre in Abuja, charged the graduands not to be deterred by failures.

READ ALSO: Independence Day: Tinubu leaves for Guinea-Bissau Thursday

“Failure is a stepping stone to the best version of you. Failure is never final, it provides a learning opportunity for growth and, as you learn, you change for better.”

Dirisu enjoined them to develop a purpose-driven outlook to life and not rely on external validation.

Earlier in his address, the university’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kayode Adebowale, said the degrees awarded were a testimonial that the graduands had been found worthy both in character and learning.

“And on that account you are released into the world to arise and shine.

“Not only are we celebrating your graduation today, but we are also celebrating the 75 years of the establishment of the University of Ibadan.

“This is a milestone in the rich history of our great university.

“It is a time to reflect on all the amazing contributions the University of Ibadan has made over the years to service delivery, community service, education, learning and research in Nigeria and across the globe.

“Our university has come a long way in the face of economic realities, harsh conditions and dwindling resources. We are immensely proud of our rich heritage, culture, tradition, and values,” Adebowale said.

Oyo State governor, ‘Seyi Makinde, declared on Thursday, that his administration will revive the Police Swift Response Squad, SRS, in the first 100 days of his second term in office, adding that such a step would help deal with criminal elements in the state.

The governor stated this while hosting the new Assistant Inspector General of Police (AIG) in charge of Zone 1I, which covers Oyo and Osun States, AIG Sikiru Akande, at the Governor’s Office, Secretariat, Ibadan.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the governor, Mr. Taiwo Adisa, indicated that the governor commended the efforts of all the security agencies during the last general election in the state, which was adjudged the most peaceful election in Nigeria.

Governor Makinde, who lauded the security agencies for maintaining peace and order before, during and after the polls, equally commended the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Adebowale Williams, and his team for their unrelenting efforts and commitment towards protecting the lives and properties of the people of the state.

According to the governor, his administration would continue to work with the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to improve security in the state.

He said: “It is homecoming for you. Let me use this opportunity to say thank you to the Commissioner of Police and his team in Oyo State. Whether my day will be good or bad usually depends on whatever message I receive from him at 6 a.m. Since he came on board, I have been having nil ugly incidents for a sizable number of times. I believe you must have been receiving a lot of support from the zone. Therefore, I appreciate the efforts of the officers and men of the zone.

“Also, let me officially commend the role played by the Nigeria Police during the election, especially in Oyo State. When I went out to vote, I observed the atmosphere was conducive as nobody was chasing after anybody. And by 4 p.m. of the following day, the official announcement was made and everything was over and none of the major parties went to court to seek redress. I can only thank you and other security agencies in Oyo State that gave us that conducive atmosphere.

“I have had comments from all around the country, telling me that this should be the model for electioneering and elections in the country. You all put in the hard work.”

Governor Makinde equally lauded the cooperation among security agencies in the state, saying: “The cooperation among the security agencies in Oyo State has been second to none. Instead of rivalry, we see all of them working together, which is because of the heads of those agencies.

“So, I cannot thank you enough. Whatever we have to do with our economy around education, health, tourism and all that can only take place in an atmosphere that is safe and secure, and that exists in Oyo State.

“When we came in, within our 100 days, we revived SRS and provided 100 KIA vehicles for them. Now, the people have given us another mandate. When they swear us in on May 29th, we will repeat the same thing within the 100 days of our second coming so that we can also use that to chase criminals out of the state.

“So, we are not resting and the request from the state CID will be approved as requested. We will make sure you have the letter as soon as possible.

“Once we are done with the road we are fixing from Iwo road to Osogbo, it should not take more than 45 minutes from Osogbo to Ibadan. Work is ongoing on our side and we will intensify efforts. We will also ensure that the two states within the zone are integrated. If people can move within 35 to 40 minutes between Ibadan and Osogbo, then, I believe policing and cooperation between the two states will be a lot easier.”

Earlier in his remark, AIG Akande said the purpose of the visit was to formally inform the governor of his arrival as the new AIG Zone 1 and to also appreciate him and the citizens of the state for accommodating and supporting the Nigeria Police.

His words: “I am here this afternoon to formally inform you of my arrival and to thank you immensely for your help and support for the Police in Oyo State, most especially to the CP and his team.

“You have done beyond our expectation and I can say you are a true epitome of the state’s anthem.”

The new AIG was accompanied by the Oyo State Commissioner of Police, CP Williams and other officers of the Zonal and the State command.

Prof. Kayode Adebowale, has described his emergence as the 13th Vice-Chancellor of Nigeria’s premier university, University of Ibadan, as a hard fought battle.

Adebowale made the assertions on Sunday in Ibadan during a short exhortation to the congregation of the Redeemed Christian Church of God, RCCG, Redemption Chapel, Oyo Province II Headquarters, Oluyole, Ibadan.

While making reference to the 10 lepers in the Bible, Adebowale said he had come back to express his heartfelt appreciation to the Almighty God for his new position.

He urged believers not to take the blessings of God for granted, saying that a lifestyle of thanksgiving and gratitude was very important.

“Today is not a day for talking too much, but I will tell you that a battle just ended and after a battle ends you need to prepare an altar of thanksgiving.

“Everyday, God lavishes his children with blessings and he expects us to appreciate those blessings.

“There are many believers today who take the blessings of God for granted, but we must acknowledge God for all His blessings on our lives.

“If you go back and look at how I started and what I have gone through, you will agree with me that it pays to serve God,” Adebowale said.

He, however, thanked the Provincial Pastor, Dave Erivona, for his prayers and supports.

“He was at the forefront of the battle with me and you couldn’t have known he was carrying such burden,” the vice-chancellor said.

Erivona requested for concerted prayers for the new vice-chancellor for a remarkable and successful tenure.
