The match between Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets final Group B game against Togo at the ongoing WAFU B U-17 Championship has been postponed to Thursday over a heavy rain.

The match was originally fixed for Wednesday at 5pm.

According to the team’s media officer, Francis Achi, the postponement was as a result of a heavy down pour which made the university stadium in Accra, Ghana, to be in an unplayable state for the match.

Achi said that the game would be played at the same ground by 9 a.m. Nigeria time.

The Eaglets need a point from the game against Togo to seal their passage to semi-final, as Burkina Faso is currently topping the group with four points from two games.

The Eaglets occupy second position with same number of points but with an inferior goal difference.

In the same vein the other Group B game between Burkina Faso and Niger has also been postponed for same reason.

The match will also be played on Thursday morning simultaneously with the Eaglets match.

The Eaglets’ striker, Rapha Adams, who scored the winning goal against Junior Mena of Niger, assured Nigerians that the team would work very hard to beat Togo in their encounter.

Adams said that the Eaglets would do all they could to beat Togo and qualify for the semi-final, noting that winning would be the collective effort of all the players on the pitch.

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets will depart the country on Sunday for the 2023 Under-17 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, in Algeria, an official said on Saturday.

Francis Achi, the team’s Media Officer, said in Abuja that they would be leaving with the optimism of securing a FIFA World Cup qualification.

Achi said a total of 26 players would be travelling alongside the team’s backroom staff on Sunday ahead of their opening fixture against Group B opponents, Zambia, on April 30.

“We have been in camp for a long time now and have had lots of friendly matches during which the team have performed well.

“Everyone is very optimistic. The technical crew is impressed with the players’ performance and how they interpret the coaches’ instructions.

“Our target is to qualify for the World Cup. If we can do that and win the tournament as well, that would be great. But, for now, we will focus on the World Cup ticket,” he said.

The media officer also added that the team was in high spirits and hopeful of taking its game one at a time.

“We are going to face top opposition, especially in the group stage where we will face Morocco, South Africa and Zambia.

“But we hope to take each game as it comes, one at a time. We are not afraid of any team, we will play our game and remain mentally focused,” Achi added.

The two-time African champions will take on Zambia in their first game before facing Morocco on May 3 and South Africa three days later.

The four semi-finalists at the tournament will be CAF representatives at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in November.

The Police Public Relations Officer in the state, DSP Wasiu Abiodun, made this known in a statement he issued.

Bandits had invaded the parish residence of Reverend Achi on Sunday, burnt the residence, with the priest inside.

“Unfortunately, the bandits reportedly attempted to gain entrance into the residence, but seemed difficult and set the house ablaze, while the said Rev. Father was burnt to death.

“A colleague of the Rev. Father, identified as Father Collins, was equally shot in the shoulder while trying to escape from the scene.

“The Commissioner of Police, Niger State Command, Ogundele Ayodeji, had dispatched a reinforcement team to the area and effort is ongoing to apprehend the assailants as investigation into the unfortunate attack has commenced,” the police said.

The statement added that the police tactical teams attached to Kaffin-Koro Division were immediately drafted to the scene, but the bandits had escaped before the arrival of the teams.

Abiodun said the body of the late priest was recovered while Father Collins was taken to hospital for treatment.

The state chapter of the Christian Association of Nigeria, led by Most Rev. Bulus Yohanna, has also condemned the dastardly act in a statement.

CAN called on the three tiers of government to do more in securing lives and property in the state and urged the authorities to apprehend the suspected killers.
