The national president of the National APC Christian Leaders Forum of Nigeria, NACLFON, Professor Olanrewaju Abraham, has expressed confidence in the capacity of Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, to further advance her passion for human welfare and sustainable development in all its ramifications.

Abraham, who also serves as the Vice-Chancellor of Heart Bible International University, HBIU, United States of America, gave the assurance in his congratulatory message to the First Lady following the conferment of the Doctor of Science in Education (D.Sc.Ed.) on her by the Tai Solarin Federal University of Education.

According to him, Senator Tinubu’s life and works already embody the highest ideals of service, compassion, and purposeful leadership.

“With your life’s work personifying excellence and your proven impacts demonstrated through the giant strides of the Renewed Hope Initiative (RHI) across local, national, and international arenas, this recognition will undoubtedly serve as an inspiration to others—an incentive to gallantry, service, and noble heroism,” Professor Abraham remarked.

The honour was bestowed during the university’s 17th convocation and coronation ceremony, at which the institution also conferred the Doctor of Science in Education Management on Governor Dapo Abiodun of Ogun State, while a former Governor of the state, Aremo Olusegun Osoba, received the Doctor of Science in Political Science award.

Commending the university for what he described as a thoughtful and well-deserved initiative, Abraham noted that honorary doctoral awards carried with them not only lifelong honour but also enduring accountability.

He further observed that Remi Tinubu’s records of achievement spaned youth and women empowerment, healthcare, humanitarian interventions, and broad social outreach—areas in which she has touched and transformed countless lives.

Abraham also expressed delight in the recognition accorded to Governor Abiodun and Aremo Osoba, describing both men as leaders whose enduring commitment to the welfare, stability, and progress of their people makes them eminently worthy of celebration.

The Court of Appeal sitting in Ilorin on Friday affirmed the death sentences imposed on five men convicted over the 2018 Offa bank robbery.

The court dismissed the appeal of the convicts for lack of merit.

The appellate panel, comprising Justice Ridwan Abdullahi, Justice Gabriel Kolawole and Justice Abdul Dogo, upheld the judgment of Justice Haleemah Saleeman of the Kwara High Court which sentenced the appellants to death by hanging.

The convicts are Niyi Ogundiran, Salawu Azeez, Ibikunle Ogunleye, Ayoade Akinnibosun and Adeola Abraham.

In its ruling, the court rejected all the grounds of appeal filed by the appellants and ordered their immediate return to prison custody.

The convictions arose from the coordinated bank robbery carried out in April 2018 in Offa, headquarters of Offa local government area of Kwara, during which five commercial banks were attacked.

No fewer than 32 persons, including nine police officers, were killed during the attacks.

The convicts were found guilty of armed robbery, illegal possession of firearms and culpable homicide.

A sixth suspect, who was a retired police officer, Michael Adikwu, died in custody before the commencement of the trial.

Justice Saleeman had earlier sentenced the five convicts to death by hanging after a trial that lasted about six years and attracted nationwide attention.

The lead prosecution counsel, Mr Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), described the appellate court’s decision as thorough and well considered, inspite of the prolonged delays that characterised the trial.

Mr Abdullah Jimba, counsel to one of the convicts, said preparations were underway to pursue a final appeal at the Supreme Court.

The National Film and Video Censors Board, NFVCB, has congratulated actress and filmmaker, Funke Akindele, on the box office success of her latest film, “Behind The Scene.”

The film, popularly known as BTS, has grossed over ₦2.4 billion and continues to show in cinemas across Nigeria.

Riding on the milestone, the NFVCB, in a statement on Tuesday, confirmed plans to honour Akindele with a Box Office Queen Award covering 2023, 2024 and 2025.

The board’s Executive Director, Dr Shaibu Husseini, described the achievement as “another landmark moment for Nigerian cinema.”

He said the feat further cemented Akindele’s status as one of Nollywood’s most influential and commercially successful figures.

According to him, Akindele has now delivered record-breaking cinema performances for four consecutive years, a rare accomplishment in the industry.

“This level of consistency reflects creative excellence and a deep understanding of audience engagement and Nigeria’s evolving film business,” Husseini said.

He disclosed that arrangements were ongoing to present the awards at a mutually convenient time.

“We planned to honour her earlier, but she requested a later date. The Minister of Arts and top female executives will join us,” he said.

Husseini added that the minister, Hannatu Musa Musawa, was “excited about the development.”

He reaffirmed NFVCB’s commitment to recognising achievements that strengthened visibility, growth and commercial sustainability in the audiovisual industry.

In a related development, the board also congratulated actress and filmmaker Toyin Abraham, on her directorial debut, “Oversabi Auntie.”

The film has crossed ₦1 billion in box office earnings and ranks among the four highest-grossing Nollywood titles of all time.

“This is a historic and impressive entry. We celebrate both filmmakers as symbols of Nollywood’s growth, resilience and global promise,” Husseini said.

For those who saw that video of the boastful monarch leading the assault on a hapless man, I am sure the thought would be that justice has been served with the news that Oba Abdulsemiyu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo in Ogun State has been remanded. Once more, it seems that social media has provided some solace to another ordinary Nigerian who, otherwise would have been another statistic of victims of the mindless and reckless abuse of office by leaders who like to play god when no one is looking. That feeling would be justified given the visible demonstration of raw power by the monarch, whose utterances suggested that he was above the law.

The footage, which showed the monarch assaulting a subject, 73-year-old Areola Abraham, sparked widespread outrage, culminating in swift government intervention. This incident highlights the digital transformation of the media and the potential power of social media in holding individuals – regardless of their status – accountable. In a country where traditional mechanisms of justice are controlled by and often privilege the influential, social media has emerged as a powerful force for transparency and social justice that allows the common man to cut through the bureaucracy. In addition, it underlines the vulnerability of otherwise untouchable men and women or their institutions when they are dragged to the court of public opinion.

I am constrained to ask: How reliable is the justice driven by virality? Is online outrage the best mechanism for ensuring accountability? And, perhaps most important, does this signify a fundamental shift in how power and privilege operate in Nigeria? For a country like ours, where justice is often slow and, at times, elusive for the common man, these questions are important.

READ ALSO: UTME: No extension of registration after March 8, JAMB warns

The capacity of social media to amplify voices and highlight injustices is not new. In 2013, Adams Oshiomhole, then the governor of Edo State was forced to make a public apology, appease the widow with a cash gift of almost N2 million and employment after he was caught on camera insulting a widow for breaking the state’s law against street trading. His meeting with the widow after the backlash that followed the publication of the video on YouTube and other social media platforms like Facebook was humbling to say the least, given his brash posture during the encounter on the street. Other events like #EndSARS and #OccupyNigeria also demonstrated the power of digital activism in mobilising public opinion. These campaigns not only forced conversations about systemic issues but sometimes also pressured authorities into taking action.

Without a doubt, social media has democratised access to justice by providing ordinary citizens a voice in the public sphere. Traditionally, victims of abuse like the one suffered by Areola Abraham would suffer in silence for fear of retribution or systemic inefficiencies. As we just witnessed, social media has changed the rules of engagement. A single post, video, or tweet can reach thousands – or even millions – within hours, forcing those in power to respond, most times against their natural instincts.

I believe, that as usual, that prospect of digital activism being used as a tool for truth and accountability is too enticing to allow the ‘pressure points’ serve as a roadblock. It is in finding the right balance that ordinary Nigerians can truly enjoy freedom without the likes of the Olorile operating as if they control the existence of those below their status.

The 2020 #EndSARS protest is one good illustration of advocacy successfully driven by social media as it led to the disbandment of the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS). It is interesting that #EndSARS mirrors the Olorile case, with social media allowing for grievances to be aired on a scale that otherwise would have been impossible and in that sense; it is tempting to think that digital platforms have become effective mechanisms for social change. As good as it sounds, that would be a rather misleading conclusion.

True to form, once the video of the elderly Areola Abraham being harassed surfaced online, it took on a life of its own leading to a backlash on social media that ultimately led to the suspension of the errant Oba. Given the speed with which the Ogun State government moved to suspend the Olorile and had him charged to court, it looks as if a viral content of this nature is a powerful weapon against impunity. What that means is that those like the Olorile who once acted with impunity now face unprecedented scrutiny. This raises important questions. First, why do those misusing power allow those moments to be captured on video? And then of course, how do we mitigate the likelihood of trial by media, knowing that at best, these kinds of content were results of citizen journalism. The two questions are important because we already know that acts of journalism does not necessarily make one a journalist; and that moments captured privately – unless it is recorded with the permission of the participants – are subject to privacy laws.

Doubtless, being able to record and share real-time events, guarantees that stories like that of Areola Abraham that would have been buried under bureaucracy have the potential to reach a wide audience. The downside? The online public, being so emotive, could lead a mob justice that often forecloses the measured deliberation that every accused should ordinarily enjoy. While there is no dispute about the Olorile harassment video, the accuracy of viral stories and videos are oftentimes questionable; a concern that digital activists do not share. In an era where misinformation is an ever-present part of the communication mix; somehow, we need to find the right balance that allows for public scrutiny of people like Olorile but ensures that justice is fairly served.

As mentioned earlier, cases of this nature have historically been swept under carpets of elite influence and bureaucracy but in addition to responding to the outcry on social media; the Egba Traditional Council is believed to have aligned with the Ogun State government to support the suspension of the Olorile. So, while it appears that digital activism is becoming a factor in the administration of justice, and that leaders are becoming aware of the public scrutiny of their actions, there is still the need to balance prompt action with the dangers of being driven by online public sentiment. There has to be a clear line to distinguish the calls for justice and digital mob rule. While digital activism may help to expose wrongdoing, there is a need to ensure that the justice system is strong enough to deal with the likes of the Olorile who have the tendency to abuse their offices.

Regardless of where this case ends, digital activists can take pride in the fact that a boastful monarch was humbled because people demanded justice. In addition, the case may provide some direction for future digital activisms. Anyone with some reasonable level of digital literacy now know that whenever they publicly witness anything that looks like injustice – and where doing so does not expose them to danger – they would be serving the public good by capturing the moment on video.

The suspension and remand of Oba Abdulsemiyu Adewale Ogunjobi is one good example of the growing influence of digital activism on social justice and how social media is replacing the media as ‘courts of public opinion,’ able to hold errant leaders to account in a system that has the tendency to privilege the well-heeled and the well-connected. As ordinary Nigerians embrace the opportunities in digital activism, there are likely going to be pressure points, either of the miscarriage of justice as in when people rush to conclusions or are misled by doctored videos. Or when roguish leaders like the Olorile learn to cover up their acts and attempt to ‘enforce controls’ that are near impossible in an age when everyone with a smartphone and internet connection is a publisher.

Watching that 73-year-old man helplessly on his knees, facing a downpour of curses and absorbing a hot slap by a palace slave, was a gory sight and a nightmare that nearly cost me my deserved sleep this morning. The man may have been caught at the wrong side of the monarch’s law before being dragged to the floor and dehumanised before the world.

The finger that recorded that scene and released the clean video, did us a big favour. Safe for that picture and Facebook, that Baba would have been successfully humiliated, probably killed and buried noiselessly as boasted by his captor.

Thank you, Ogun State Government. Thank you. Ogun State Police Command. Thank you, social media citizens who acted children to Baba and cried for justice for him. The boy that slapped him shouldn’t be allowed to return to his wife and children. Aside his six-month suspension, the king must produce the overzealous boy and other disposable chanting his panegyrics while descending on that Baba.

Cameras are everywhere now, actively capturing everything for the waiting Facebook. Before you talk, before you act, before you do anything, think and weigh the options. You shall be recorded!

Family of Baba shouldn’t be chorusing song of praise over this prompt justice for their father. They should rally round him now, serve him good food, engage him in talks, show him good movies and let him see a brighter future ahead. If not, that is, if isolated, Baba may be rounding off due to the pinch of that experience in him. His esteem as head of a people had been killed yesterday. The video is everywhere. Then, what remains?

READ ALSO: Another gaffe by Obasanjo: Putting historical records straight

A strong man in the age of our forefathers would just quietly go to his bedroom and sleep forever. This shall not be the portion of this Baba who looked more innocent of the charges against him than a suspect. But his family and friends should help him, work on him to reactivate his soul, his mind and his spirit to live further.

The police authorities should prove that truly the law enforcement agency is not a tool exclusively for privileged individuals who know “ogas” at the top; that was what that lawless man said obviously to kill the hope of Baba.

Even if the cursing king is returned to the stool after the end of his suspension, he has lost it. At the airport, at mall; anywhere he goes, his face is in the memory of all. So, he has lost the hails of K-a-b-i-y-e-s-i ooo.

God bless this new technology; there is no longer a hidden place to commit such sacrilege again without a backlash. Cameras are everywhere now, actively capturing everything for the waiting Facebook. Before you talk, before you act, before you do anything, think and weigh the options. You shall be recorded!

The Police Command in Ogun on Monday said it had taken note of a video clip on social media in which an elderly man, Mr. Areola Abraham, was seen assaulted.

Spokesperson of the command, CSP Omolola Odutola, in a statement in Abeokuta said Abraham was seen prostrating and subjected to verbal abuse and assault by a traditional ruler.

She added that the traditional ruler was Oba Abdulsemiu Adewale Ogunjobi, the Olorile of Orile-Ifo.

Odutola said based on the incident’s gravity, the Commissioner of Police in Ogun, Lanre Ogunlowo, had ordered a thorough and discreet investigation into the matter.

“The CP further assures that Police will adhere to the rule of law and fundamental human rights principles in the instant case,” she said.

Tammy Abraham snatched a dramatic injury-time winner as AC Milan battled back from two goals down to beat rivals Inter 3-2 and win the Italian Super Cup in Riyadh.

Goals from Lautaro Martinez and Mehdi Taremi either side of the interval looked set to land Inter their second straight crown, with Milan keeper, Mike Maignan, saving his side from a bigger deficit.

A long-range free-kick from Theo Hernandez gave Milan hope and Christian Pulisic levelled before Englishman Abraham’s late strike gifted Sergio Conceicao his first trophy in only his second game in charge of the Rossoneri.

Conceicao will have been delighted with the way his side started the game as Tijjani Reijnders flashed a pair of early chances wide and Inter struggled to create anything of note until the 23rd minute.

Federico Dimarco almost put the holders in front from their first real chance but his shot was turned out for a corner by a stretching Maignan in the first of a number of high-profile saves.

Inter suffered a setback on the half-hour mark when Hakan Calhanoglu was forced off injured, but they went in ahead at the interval when Martinez cut inside two defenders and fired low into the corner of the net.

A brilliant first touch from Taremi rounded off a swift counter-attack two minutes into the second half and moved Inter closer to a sixth straight win in all competitions.

But the introduction of Rafael Leao in the 50th minute helped give Milan hope and within two minutes Hernandez had lashed his set-piece past Yann Sommer in the Inter goal.

Malick Thiaw and Pulisic both had chances as Milan pressed before another superb run from Leao set up a fine chance for Reijnders, who was denied by a brilliant block from Inter defender Alessandro Bastoni.

Sommer saved from Alvaro Morata before a lively game swung to the other end, Taremi missing a golden chance to grab his second then Maignan foiling Martinez as Inter took their turn to press.

Milan levelled 10 minutes from time with Leao again the instigator, setting Hernandez free down the left before his cross fed Pulisic, who turned and lashed a low shot to Sommer’s left.

Maignan denied Taremi before the keeper performed heroics to block both Davide Frattesi and Denzel Dumfries in quick succession as Inter battled for the win.

Instead it was former Chelsea man Abraham – a 77th-minute replacement for Yunus Musah – who reacted fastest to Leao’s neat through-ball to nip into the right side of the box and flash the winner past Sommer from a tight angle.

A High Court sitting in Ilorin on Thursday sentenced five men charged with the 2018 Offa bank robbery incident to death by hanging.

The court convicted Ayoade Akinnibosun; Azeez Salahudeen; Niyi Ogundiran; Ibikunle Ogunleye and Adeola Abraham.

Delivering judgment, Justice Haleema Saliman held that the five defendants were found guilty of conspiracy, armed robbery, culpable homicide and illegal possession of fire arms.

Saliman said that the defendants caused the death of people, including a police officers and civilians during the armed robbery in Offa, on April, 2018, which is punishable by death.

Earlier, the lead prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacob (SAN), said that the prosecution was able to prove his case beyond reasonable doubt and the judgement was done accordingly.

Jacob said that the six years spent on the case was worth it, as evidence clearly showed that the convicts were involved in the robbery and killings.

He said that the trials had been concluded and the prosecutors had proved their case beyond reasonable doubt for the suspects to be convicted.

The lead defence counsel, Nathaniel Emeribe, represented by Abdullahi Jimba said that the judgment was not surprising, considering the evidence presented in court, it had been envisaged that it would end that way.

He, however, said that in line with the case of AG Oyo State with Bello, there would definitely be an appeal and record would be compiled and moved to the court of appeal.

The prime suspect, a policeman, Michael Adikwu died in police custody during the trial while the remaining five pleaded for mercy but were convicted.
