Wikki Tourist FC of Bauchi, on Sunday, compounded the woes of the Enyimba International FC of Aba with 1-0 win in the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) match day 13 played in Aba.

The only goal of the match was scored by Ahmed Abubakar in 31st minute of the match to give the visitors the lifeline before the interval.

In a post match interview, Wikki Tourist coach, Abdul Maikaba, expressed happiness over the outcome of the match.

Maikaba said he told the players to go for the win, knowing that Enyimba International FC Stadium was a good atmosphere for players to express themselves with maximum protection.

“We planned to open the score before our host and it worked out for us; we would have scored more goals but all things being the same.

“I know that this will motivate the players to do better in the next matches of the season and to finish the league well,” Maikaba said.

Meanwhile, Enyimba FC coach Stanley Eguma boycotted the post match interview as usual and that made it the second time he ignored the newsmen.

The first was when his team lost 2-1 to Warri Wolves at home in which he left the journalists waiting in vain at the press room.

The win lifted Wikki Tourist to seventh possible on the league table with 19 points while Enyimba slumped to the 11th position with 17 points after 13 matches.

Governor Alex Otti of Abia State has said that the state government has started receiving credible intelligence on the killing of five soldiers which took place on May 30 in Aba.

Otti disclosed this on Thursday when he paid a morale boosting visit to the officers and men of the144 Battalion Nigerian Army, at the Ngwa High School, Aba.

On May 30, five soldiers were killed by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, at the Obikabia Junction in Aba.

The governor said that he was on the visit to address the soldiers on the killing of five soldiers at the Obikabia Junction.

He said that the efforts made by the government to gather intelligence on the incident had started producing results and it would be sustained.

He said: “We have started getting very credible information, this intelligence gathering will continue, but I do not want it to dampen your morale.

“We have all been working together to secure this state in the last one year that I have been the governor of the state, and I want to encourage you to continue your work; don’t get distracted.

“I believe, from credible intelligence available to us, that this criminal act may have been executed by people who are opposed to the progress and the good things that are happening in Abia.

“So, we will get to the root of the matter, we will arrest everyone that is involved.”

READ ALSO: Sanwo-Olu awards N10m cash prize to LASU’s valedictorian

Otti said that he had visited the widows of the five slain soldiers and promised the commitment of the government to keep giving them adequate welfare support as well as place their children on scholarship until they graduate from the university.

He said that the government valued the contributions of the Nigerian Army to the security in Abia and assured the soldiers of the government’s support.

“I feel it is my responsibility as the Chief Security Officer of the state to speak to you, commiserate with you, and also ensure that your morale is boosted, that you don’t get discouraged and you don’t get distracted by this unfortunate incident.

“The state had already placed a bounty of N25 million on anybody who has information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of people who were involved in this dastardly act, remotely or directly,” he said.

Otti also appealed to the Army to carry out their investigation with the consciousness of the fact that some of the people already arrested in the course of their investigation may be innocent.

He said that he had been informed that the people taken by the Nigerian Army for questioning had been released, except for about 10 people who were still being investigated.

“We support thorough investigation, but we will also appeal to you that a lot of innocent civilians, who you will encounter may not have been involved.

“I believe that most of them are not involved. It is even possible that those who committed this crime came from outside the state.

“So, whatever be the case we will not like to punish those who are innocent with those who are guilty because like it is said, two wrongs cannot make a right,” he said.

He commended the Nigerian Army for showing commitment to its duty of protecting the citizens, which had contributed immensely to safety of lives and property in Abia.

Otti urged the soldiers to remain alert and not to let the killing of their colleagues to dampen their spirit.

The governor was received by the Commander, 14 Brigade Ohafia, Brig.-Gen. Olusola Diya and the Commanding Officer, 144 Battalion, Major K.P. Duniya.

The Enyimba International FC of Aba, on Saturday, defeated visiting Shooting Stars FC of Ibadan 1-0 at the ongoing Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, match day 20.

Chijioke Mbaoma became the hero of the day as his 43rd minute goal separated the two sides in the encounter that took place at the Enyimba Stadium, Aba.

In a post match interview, Enyimba Assistant Coach, Yemi Olarewaju, said the game “is a good one”, adding that his team prepared well for it knowing that it was going to be tough.

“3SC is a good team and they really came at us but we only needed the three points and that was what we did right and moved ahead.

“As the assistant coach, I need to do well in the absence of the technical adviser because that is why I came to Enyimba,” Olarewaju said.

He further said that continental ticket was one of the club’s important chase.

READ ALSO: Olayemi Cardoso’s dilemma, By Tunde Rahman

“This game has come and gone, we are shifting our focus to the next game, which is an away match against Bendel Insurance,” Olarewaju said.

Coach Olugbenga Ogunbote of 3SC said that his team gave their all just that the game did not go in their favour.

“Sometimes, you play well but will not get the deserved result and in today’s game, we played well and deserved at worst a point.

“All the same, we have to pick the pieces and move ahead with the positives as we are going to work on the lapses that cost us this game.

“I think we were careless with the goal we conceded because it is a situation we should have avoided and that is one of the things we need to put right before our next game,” Ogunbote said.

In the first game of the day, Heartland FC of Owerri came back from a goal down to share the spoil with visiting Kano Pillars.

Mustapha Ibrahim put Kano Pillars ahead in 29 minute before Malachy Ohawume equalised for Heartland FC in the 88th minute.

Abia Command of the Nigeria Police Force has confirmed the killing of two of its personnel on Tuesday evening in Aba, the commercial hub of the state, by unknown gunmen.

The command’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, ASP Maureen Chinaka, said that an Inspector and a Constable were killed by the hoodlums.

She said the incident happened when the hoodlums attacked the convoy of the Abia Commissioner for Trade, Commerce and Investment, Dr Chimezie Ukaegbu, on Tuesday evening.

The incident occurred at the popular SAMECK Junction, bordering Ariaria International Market and also links Faulks Road and the Old Express Road.

A source who pleaded anonymity, told News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, that some other persons sustained bullet wounds from the ensuing panic which forced people to hide inside their shops and houses until late hours of Tuesday night.

She also said that the Police returned early Wednesday morning to arrest some persons while shooting into the air.

She said the Police had stationed over seven Hilux vans around A-Line in Ariaria while their men waited in the parked vehicles to ensure restoration of law and order.

The PPRO, Chinaka, said the distressing incident occurred at approximately 4 pm on Tuesday, saying that a group of hoodlums launched an attack on the convoy of the Commissioner for Trade, Commerce, and Industry during the commissioner’s familiarization tour to markets in Aba metropolis.

“The convoy was en route Ekeoha Shopping Plaza when the armed assailants opened fire. Regrettably, amidst the chaos, two Police personnel lost their lives in the line of duty.

“A police constable who was part of the security convoy was fatally shot.

“Additionally, a police inspector who was not initially part of the convoy but was on a separate assignment with a police Hilux tragically lost his life.

“Furthermore, the hoodlums set ablaze a vehicle belonging to the Ministry for Trade, Commerce, and Investment”.

Chinaka said the Abia Police Commissioner, CP Kenechukwu Onwuemelie, had assured Abia people and residents that every effort would be exerted with discreet investigations to ensure that justice was served.

The Police condemned the cowardly act of violence and swore to the steadfast pursuit of its resolve to bring the perpetrators of the act to justice.

He urged the public to remain calm, vigilant, and to cooperate fully with law enforcement agencies.

“Any information, regardless of how insignificant it may seem, could prove pivotal in identifying and apprehending the culprits responsible for this heinous act.

“We emphasize our unwavering commitment to pursuing justice and upholding the triumph of good over evil.

“Together, as a united community, we shall prevail against such senseless acts of violence,” Chinaka said.

A late Saturday night fire has gutted leather products, raw materials and machines estimated at over N3 billion in Aba, Abia State.

The fire affected over 30 shops at the Mansion Zone block of Powerline Leather Products Industrial Cluster.

The chairman of the affected block in the industrial cluster, Mr Ugochukwu Nwachukwu said on Sunday that more than 500 workers were working in the affected shops.

Nwachukwu said though the Abia Fire Service arrived from Umuahia about an hour after the fire started, and their efforts helped to douse the inferno.

Mr. Cherechi Ndukwe, a victim, said he rushed to the scene after a call about the incident.

“We made frantic but unsuccessful efforts to douse the inferno with buckets of water before the arrival of the men of Abia Fire Service from Umuahia.

READ ALSO: Fire guts female hostel at UNIBEN

“The fire service men arrived some minutes past 11 p.m. to help us douse the raging fire,” he added.

Ndukwe appealed for immediate help to the victims, as the incident had put their businesses, families, and employees in jeopardy.

“It will be very difficult to survive without the support of Abia and federal governments,” he added.

Another victim, Mrs Nnenna Onyedikachi, said all they had invested in the business had been destroyed by the fire.

A former chairman of Omenka Shoemakers Association, Powerline Zone, Mr Goodluck Mmeri, expressed sadness that miscreants capitalised on the situation to steal some of the materials and machines.

Also, Mazi Okechukwu Williams, the President, Leather Product Manufacturers Association, in Abia, lamented over the huge losses suffered by the traders in the face of the current harsh economic situation.

He regretted that the state government was yet to re-establish a fire service outpost at Ariaria International Market to handle fire cases.

Williams pleaded with Governor Alex Otti to restore the fire service outpost to ensure prompt response to any fire incident in and around the market.

Rangers International FC of Enugu on Sunday overpowered visiting Enyimba FC of Aba by 2-0 in the Match Day 19 of the Nigeria Professional Football League.

The match, which was played at the Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu, saw the flying antelopes winning a penalty at the 54th minute of play.

The penalty was converted by Christian Nnaji, while Elijah Ani made it 2-0, again from a penalty spot.

The goal came two minutes into the added time after the 90 minutes regulation time.

Speaking at a post-match interview with journalists, Rangers Technical Adviser, Salisu Yusuf, expressed satisfaction with his players’ performance.

According to him, every game came with win or lose and today, we are at the side of a win.

“This victory came our way as a result of the technique we adopted after the interval and it paid off,” Yusuf said.

Rangers now occupy the fifth position on the league with 33 points after 19 matches, while Enyimba remain in the seventh position with 31 points after 18 matches.

It would be recalled that the match, which was to be played on April 4, was shifted because of Enyimba’s continental engagement.
