It was a day of celebration, reflection and advocacy as veteran Nigerian filmmaker, Mr. Matthew Simpa, celebrated his 60th birthday with the launch of two new books and a passionate call for better welfare for veterans of the Nigerian film industry.

The event, held at the prestigious Simeon Adebo Library in Abeokuta, on Tuesday, brought together luminaries from the Nigerian entertainment scene to honour Simpa’s towering achievements of about four-decade career in Nollywood.

Amidst the celebratory atmosphere, Simpa unveiled his latest literary offerings – “The Birthday Gift” and “You’re Right, You’re Wrong” – further cementing his multi-talented persona as a filmmaker, author and cultural advocate.

However, the high point of the occasion was Simpa’s impassioned advocacy for improved welfare and support structures for veterans who have dedicated their lives to the growth and development of the Nigerian film industry.

Presenting a well-articulated proposal to representatives of the National Film and Video Censors Board, he urged stakeholders to prioritize the welfare of the pioneers, many of whom now face economic and health challenges in their twilight years.

In his remarks, Simpa reminisced about the humble beginnings of Nollywood and the sacrifices made by the veterans who laid the foundations for its current global acclaim.

“We are where we are today because of the tireless efforts and unwavering commitment of those who came before us,” he said.

“It is only fitting that we honour their contributions by ensuring they live out their golden years with dignity and comfort.”

The veteran filmmaker’s call resonated deeply with the distinguished guests in attendance, including Dr. Niran Malaolu, Chief Biodun Lasile, and Chief Akin Okudero, who took turns to celebrate Simpa’s remarkable journey and enduring impact on the Nigerian film landscape.

As the event drew to a close, there was a palpable sense of optimism that Simpa’s clarion call would spur tangible action towards securing a better future for the unsung heroes of Nollywood’s glorious past.
