The Senate has confirmed the appointment of Dr Salamatu Suleiman as chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, NHRC.
The upper chamber also confirmed the appointments of 10 other persons as members of the Governing Council of the NHRC.
Their confirmation, followed the presentation and adoption of report of Committee on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters at plenary on Wednesday.
Presenting the report, Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Adeniyi Adegbonmire (APC Ondo) said the Senate at its plenary had referred the nominations to the committee for screening.
He said that the screening exercise was conducted on October 27.
Adegbonmire said the committee carefully scrutinised the curriculum vitae and other accompanying documents of the nominees and was satisfied with their exposure, experience in human rights, qualifications and competence.
He, therefore, urged the Senate to confirm their appointment.
Seconding the motion, Sen. Ekong Samson (APC Akwa Ibom) said that the nominees were fit and proper to be saddled with the responsibility of deepening human rights culture in Nigeria.
He said that human rights were timeless, cut across boundaries and party lines and remained central to the existence of humanity.
Samson said the calibre of the nominees reflected the importance attached to human rights, and commended President Bola Tinubu for nominating men and women of substance.
Those confirmed as board members of the NHRC are Hauwaila Ibrahim, Edmund Obiagwu, Ogunji Kingsley, Oluwakemi Okenyoodo, Adedeji Adekunle and Ayo Adewuyi.
Others are Mohammed Adelodun, Eze Anaba, Maupe Ogun-Yusuf, and Patience Udoh.
The Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, in his remarks congratulated the newly confirmed chairman and members of the governing council of NHRC.
He prayed that the new council members would bring justice to bear in the discharge of their functions.
Akpabio also commended members of the National Assembly, particularly the committee for the expeditious manner in which they handled the screening and confirmation.
