The Nigeria Taekwondo Federation has expressed delight over the responses received so far on the forthcoming National Taekwondo Championship billed to start on September 18 in Lagos.

The event tagged Michael Opeyemi Bamidele National Taekwondo championship is first in its series and it is eagerly being awaited by stakeholders in the sport.

A former Commissioner for Sports and ex-Commissioner for Information and strategy in Lagos State, Opeyemi Bamidele, is the sponsor of the tournament which will see young and old athletes in the sport battle for honours.

Bamidele, now in the Senate, is a big sports enthusiast who has encouraged different sporting events in the past.

The president of the Taekwondo Federation of Nigeria, Tayo Popoola, told our correspondent on Wednesday that she was happy with the feedback being received on the event scheduled to hold for three days.

“Our athletes are eagerly yearning for more competition and the forthcoming MOB National Championship is a timely answer to their calls. The clubs, schools and states have been calling to make enquiries.

“For an event in its very first edition, the responses are so encouraging and this is enough indication about the forthcoming event.

“Again, this is coming at a time we are also working towards the next African Games and the Olympic Games. It is a win-win for everyone. The federation is happy, the athletes are happy just as the sponsor is very happy to be presenting a template for the athletes.”

The MOB National Taekwondo Championship, already tagged tourney of ‘Unity’ is open to states, clubs and schools all over the country.

“Registration is still ongoing and all the people involved are already working round the clock such that we are ready to start the event even tomorrow,” Popoola added.
