Elder statesman, Edwin Clark, has said that one of the reasons he decided to forgive the police which raided his house was because he did not want mayhem to be caused in his name.
According to him, there were some youths in the Niger Delta who felt embarrassed by the invasion of his house and were ready to cause trouble.
He said he however had to calm them down to allow peace to reign in the interest of the nation.
Clark made the remark on Saturday in Abuja when Senator Shehu Sani visited him.
Clark said: “I have forgotten all that since the Inspector General has apologised to me through a very powerful delegation; I have forgiven them in the interest of Nigeria.
“If I do not, there are people who are very willing to cause trouble and I do not want that to be done in my name.
“I have also appealed to my youths, my children at home who gathered at Yenagoa in Bayelsa, who were very upset, to be peaceful.”
The elder statesman said there might not be anything wrong with his house being searched, but the manner it was carried out was embarrassing.
He said it was unimaginable that at his age of 91, he would be thought of as one stockpiling arms when he had always preached peace and calmed frayed nerves.
His guest, Sani, appealed to him to accept the Inspector General’s apology.
He stressed that Clark was one of the invaluable leaders of the country, describing him as a repository of the history of Nigeria.
