An invitation has been issued for the submission of chapters for an upcoming book titled Media Ethics in Africa: Issues and Critiques, in honour of Prof. Olujimi Olusola Kayode.

A distinguished media ethics scholar with over four decades of teaching and research experience in Nigeria, JimiKay, as he is fondly called, is a Professor of Journalism at the Faculty of Communication and Media Studies, Lagos State University, LASU, Nigeria.

A renowned authority in media ethics, he has dedicated over four decades to advancing ethical standards in media through teaching, research, and advocacy.

His work has had a profound impact on media practices across Nigeria.

The festschrift is said to have been designed to honour his contributions while inspiring continued research and dialogue on media ethics across Africa as he will clock 70 next year and bow out of LASU.

According to the invitation by the Editors – a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Journalism at Lagos State University, Nigeria, Dr. Ganiyat Tijani-Adenle, and an Associate Professor (Reader) in the Department of Mass Communication at Fountain University, Osogbo, Nigeria, Dr. Raheemat Adeniran – the book will provide an in-depth exploration of media ethics across various platforms in Africa, “critically engaging with key ethical principles and practices in the context of the continent’s media landscape.”

The invitation for contribution is targeted at academic and media industry experts.

The scope and topics, according to the scholars are:

  • Conceptualizing media ethics in Africa
  • Historical evolution of ethical standards in African print media
  • Investigative journalism and ethical dilemmas in print media
  • Ethical concerns in media coverage and beat associations
  • Advertising ethics in print media and classifieds
  • Ethical challenges in radio and television broadcasting
  • Regulatory frameworks and self-regulation in African broadcast media
  • Ethics in community and specialized radio
  • Ethics of newspaper review programs
  • Digital journalism and ethical practices in Africa
  • Social media ethics and misinformation in the digital age
  • Public relations ethics in African media
  • Crisis communication and ethical considerations
  • Case studies of advertising ethics in African campaigns
  • Ethical considerations in media representation of African popular culture
  • Cultural sensitivity and ethics in entertainment media
  • Media ethics in indigenous language communication
  • The intersection of media ethics and artificial intelligence in Africa.

They, however, said submissions would not be limited to the topics listed.

We invite both academic and industry professionals to contribute. Below are the submission categories:

Industry/Professional Submissions:

Professionals and thought leaders in the field are encouraged to submit non-academic, insightful pieces on media ethics. Submissions should include a pitch of 300-500 words outlining the intended contribution’s focus.

Academic Submissions:

Researchers are invited to submit an abstract of no more than 300 words detailing their proposed chapter’s scope, methodology, and significance. The abstract should include:

  • Title of the chapter
  • Author name(s): First name and SURNAME in capitals (e.g., Raheemat ADENIRAN)
  • Author affiliation(s)
  • Contact details for the corresponding author (email and phone number)
  • Keywords (up to five, arranged in alphabetical order)
  • Abstract (300 words max.)

Full Chapter Submission Requirements:

Upon acceptance of the abstract, contributors will be invited to submit full chapters adhering to the following guidelines:

  • Length: 3,000-5,000 words, including references
  • Format: Microsoft Word (.docx)
  • Style: APA 7th edition for citations and references
  • Font: Times New Roman, 12-point
  • Spacing: Double-spaced

  • Abstract Submission Deadline: October 31, 2024
  • Notification of Abstract Acceptance: November 15, 2024
  • Full Chapter Submission Deadline: February 28, 2025
  • Peer Review Completion: April 30, 2025
  • Final Chapter Submission: May 30, 2025
  • Publication Date: December 2025

Review Process
