It is with profound sadness, yet with total submission to the will of Almighty Allah, that I join the Nigerian media community, the people of Ibadanland, and countless admirers across the country in mourning the passing of Oloye Abdulrasheed Olalekan Alabi—a distinguished journalist, accomplished public relations strategist, eminent cultural ambassador and one of the finest sons of Ibadan.
The transition of Oloye Lekan Alabi came like a mighty rushing wind, heralding the departure of a personality whose commanding presence, impeccable professionalism and unwavering commitment to Yoruba culture left an enduring imprint on journalism, public service and the cultural life of our nation.
Oloye Lekan Alabi belonged to that exceptional generation of journalists who regarded the profession not merely as a career but as a sacred calling. As Press Secretary to the late Chief Bola Ige during his tenure as Governor of the old Oyo State, working alongside respected media professionals Dapo Aderinola and Femi Mapaderun, he helped establish enduring standards in government communication and media relations. His competence, integrity and professional discipline earned him the uncommon distinction of serving successive administrations, including that of the then Military Governor of old Oyo State, Major-General Oladayo Popoola (Rtd.), and other governors—an eloquent testament to the confidence reposed in his ability and character.
Even in the twilight of his life, his passion for public enlightenment never diminished.
Beyond his remarkable accomplishments in journalism and public service, Oloye Alabi was an outstanding custodian of Yoruba civilisation and a passionate ambassador of Ibadan’s rich historical heritage. As Maye Olubadan of Ibadanland, having earlier served as Ekefa and Parakoyi Olubadan, he devoted himself to preserving and promoting the traditions, history and cultural identity of his people. His vast knowledge of Yoruba history, folklore and oral tradition, coupled with his delightful wit and unmistakable Ibadan expressions, made him a treasured cultural authority and an engaging raconteur whose company was always enriching.
His abiding love for indigenous Yoruba music, particularly the timeless Sakara tradition popularised by the legendary Yusuf Olatunji, reflected his lifelong commitment to preserving the cultural values that define our identity as a people.
Even in the twilight of his life, his passion for public enlightenment never diminished. Through his insightful broadcasts on Agidigbo 88.7 FM, Space 90.1 FM and other radio platforms, he continued to educate, inspire and entertain audiences with the same clarity of thought, historical depth and cultural pride that characterised his entire career.
The passing of Oloye Abdulrasheed Olalekan Alabi is a profound loss to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, the League of Veteran Journalists, the Olubadan-in-Council, the media profession, Ibadanland and all who cherish the preservation of Yoruba cultural heritage. His legacy of professional excellence, public service, cultural patriotism and personal humility will continue to inspire generations of journalists, communicators and cultural enthusiasts.
I extend my heartfelt condolences to his immediate family, His Imperial Majesty the Olubadan of Ibadanland, the Olubadan-in-Council, the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Oyo State Council, the League of Veteran Journalists, his friends, associates and the entire people of Ibadanland on this painful and irreparable loss.
