Senate Leader of the National Assembly, Opeyemi Bamidele, on Saturday assured that the National Taekwondo Team Championship will be an annual event.
The senator is the sponsor of the first Micheal Opeyemi Bamidele, MOB, tournament which ended at the Indoor Sports Hall of the National Stadium on Saturday.
Bamidele was present at the final day of the event which started on Friday in Surulere.
States, clubs and para military outfits took part in the largely attended event which climaxed with a colourful closing ceremony on Saturday.
“I am very elated to see youths competing in a very good atmosphere and I want to first confirm that this will not be a one-off event, rather, it will be annual.
“This competition will go round the geo-political zones in the country but the second edition will still be in Lagos. It will take place at Teslim Balogun Stadium,” Senator Bamidele said.
The former Commissioner for Youth and Sports also announced surprise motivation for all the participants of the MOB championship.
“I hereby double the prize money of all the athletes while all the officials will get additional special cash package for their efforts in helping in developing the game
“Let me also salute the Taekwondo Federation led by Grand Master Tayo Popoola. We just have to keep this event going and it has to be better every year,” Bamidele added.
In some of the results of the final, All Best Club won gold in the Junior male fights, Lagos State won silver while AIMAAN won bronze.
For the junior female fights, Ondo State came first, N-Youth Club won silver and Lagos State won the bronze.
In the senior mixed competition, Rivers State won gold, Comprehensive Club clinched the silver and the bronze went to University of Lagos A. For the Junior Mixed competition, N-Youths club won gold just as Lagos State won silver and Ondo claimed the bronze medal.
Rivers were again glorious in the senior female cadre, winning the gold medal while University of Lagos won Silver and Osun State clinched the bronze.
In the senior male category, Rivers won gold, Sky Star Club won silver and Comprehensive Club clinched the bronze medal.
President of the NTF, Popoola, said she was elated about the overall standard of the competition.
