The State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps in Ondo State, Mrs. Victoria Nnenna Ani, has charged corps members to ensure that their service has huge impact on the society.
Ani made the call while debriefing the 2023 Batch ‘C’ (Stream 1) corps members as part of activities to round off the three weeks orientation course.
She said that the essence of the exercise was to spell out guidelines that corps members were expected to follow throughout the service year having successfully completed the first phase which was the orientation course.
“Gentlemen corps members, I want to admonish you to let all the lessons learnt during the orientation course come handy during the remaining cardinal programmes of the Scheme as what you have just gone through is to prepare you physically, emotionally, mentally and psychologically for the service year. The challenges out there will be a bit tough and hard but I am confident that the increase in your resilience level in the last three weeks will stand you in good stead to triumph above all challenges.
“Remember that you have been mobilised and deployed to contribute to nation-building and anything short of this is totally unacceptable to the NYSC management. Your orientation course programme has been designed in a way that the whole service year is experimented in a manner suggestive that your expected selfless roles are placed above personal considerations”.
The NYSC boss said that the scheme had given a promising and guaranteed future to several millions of graduate youths who had passed through the programme and urged the members of the service corps to see their participation as an opportunity to give their best uniting the country.
“NYSC has assembled you from all the states of the federation including FCT and put you under one roof to allow you cross-fertilise ideas and come up with solutions to hydra-headed challenges bedevilling the nation and you will agree with me that the exercise has been worthwhile. You are now better informed as to the promotion of things that will make us remain one indivisible entity.”
She stated that during the service year, the corps members should be vigilant and ensure that their security is not compromised.
“The service year will be beautiful if you remain disciplined and focused. Honour and give respect to all people irrespective of tribe and religious leaning as this will make them stand up for you in case you are found in harm’s way. Above all, identify with a religious group or denomination that you are convinced will enhance your spiritual growth and never be found in a place you are not expected not to be throughout the service year” she admonished,” she said.
She emphasised on the directive that corps members should avoid night journeys and reiterated that the scheme in the state had an understanding with stakeholders in the transport industry to enforce ‘No to night journeys’ directive.
“I want you to be good ambassador that we shall all be proud of during and after the service year. Do not forget to give your best to the services of the nation wherever you find yourself and always remember the motto of the NYSC Scheme – Service and Humility in whatever you do,” she concluded.
