There need for urgent federal legislative reforms to establish state police to save Nigeria from the widespread violent attacks across all regions.
The Development Agenda for Western Nigeria, DAWN, Commission gave the warning in a statement issued on Wednesday.
In the statement by its Director General, Dr. Seye Oyeleye, the commission said the level of criminality had reached an alarming stage, hence the need for an urgent action.
The statement reads in part: “The expansion and boldness of terrorists, bandits, and criminal groups perpetrating violent crimes against innocent citizens and communities have reached alarming proportions.
“Without urgent legislative action to empower states to develop their own policing and intelligence structures, the country risks sliding into a total breakdown of law and order.”
Against the backdrop of the killings in some parts of the country in recent time, and the abduction of school children in Kebbi, the commission said it was obvious that nowhere was safe.
The commission also expressed its view over the increasing external pressure, such as the one by American president, Donald Trump.
It warned that “Such external pressures, if materialised, would complicate Nigeria’s already fragile ethno-religious relationships, displace millions, and cast a long shadow over the country’s sovereignty and future stability.”
Advocating for urgent introduction of state police, the commission stated: “The establishment of state police is not just a legislative necessity; it is a moral imperative.
“It is the only credible path to restoring confidence in governance, protecting lives and property, and ensuring that Nigeria remains a cohesive and sovereign nation.”
