Former Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, is dead.
He was 61.
The death of “Dodo Mayana”, as he is popularly called by his fans, was announced on Thursday when the Super Eagles paid him tribute.
In a statement on X on Thursday, the national team described Peter Rufai as a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.

The statement reads in part: “Forever in our hearts, Dodo Mayana. We mourn the passing of legendary Super Eagles goalkeeper, Peter Rufai, a giant of Nigerian football and a 1994 AFCON champion.”
The team added: “Your legacy lives on between the sticks and beyond. Rest well, Peter Rufai.”
Peter Rufai was a member of the Nigerian team that won the 1994 AFCON.
One of Nigeria’s most celebrated goalkeepers, he featured in two FIFA World Cups — USA 1994 and France 1998.
