If someone had told me that, without being in detention or prison or on the hospital bed, that I would survive for over a week without access to my phone, I would have dismissed the thought.
You see, for some of us, the phone has become a second skin. For some, it is their office where everything is done. I have seen a lot of people texting while driving. It’s also not unusual for people of all ages to be looking at their phones or texting while trekking.
Not a few people, I am told, check their phone in the middle of the night, on their way from the rest room!
The mobile phone has totally changed the way we live!
My being without my phone wasn’t out of choice.
The screen cracked and I took it to the Samsung Centre on Allen Avenue for repairs. The front desk officer told me it would be ready in three days. But I have had to wait for a frustrating nine days to retrieve my phone.
So, to all those who have sent me messages on WhatsApp, wondering what was happening, especially, my creditors, now you know.
During the waiting period, I missed tons of messages. I could neither access my WhatsApp nor my Facebook. I couldn’t access my mails either, neither could I carry out any banking transaction.
I couldn’t check my diary also to keep up with scheduled appointments.

The makeshift phone I acquired offered no relief.
It was, to say the least, frustrating.
I still find it difficult to believe that in the year of our Lord, 2024, it would take over a week to fix the broken screen of a phone, especially, knowing the vital role a high end phone plays in today’s world.
I must confess that men (and women) of goodwill, warned me against taking the phone to Samsung for repairs, instead advised that I took the phone to the many wait-and-get repair phone shops around.
But my reasoning was this: at times, we are pennywise but pounds foolish. Why should I spend a tidy sum acquiring a Samsung S22 ultra, only to take it to a local repair workshop!
So, for nine days, I was deprived of my freedom of speech and expression.
I am weighing my options.
So, to all those who have sent me messages on WhatsApp, wondering what was happening, especially, my creditors, now you know.
