He’s always been at the barricades. I take that back. He must have been born at the barricades. He is a most consistent fighter for rights and, refreshingly, one without the hunger a fighter’s accolades. He is not the type to mine the journalism-activism intersection for gaudy celebritydom.

That, I think, costs him a bit in recognition.

Two years ago in Abuja, I was with a correspondent of a major newspaper in Abuja and our conversation doglegged to him.

To my utter shock, the correspondent said he had never heard his name. Joking? He wasn’t, he said. I didn’t know whether to laugh or actually laugh. While I didn’t ask, I suspected that he’d be familiar with those who attempted to burnish the rep of a late tyrant’s family as well as fugitive former oil minister and was happy to bring us the immodest opulence, complete with top-shelf autos, in which a former senator lives. Worse, he gawked at the autos.

The subject of this post, @Lanre Arogundade, is not of that tribe. Those who matter know him for what he is: steadfast. Egbon, may all of life’s blessings flow your way today and always. Happy birthday.
