EXTRA: Ashimolowo, Chris Okafor, CAN and PFN
Pastor Chris Okafor and Doris Ogala

At a time the Chris Okafor and Doris Ogala saga assailed our sensibilities via social media on all fronts and back-to-back for the best part of December, the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) was busy castigating Ini Edo for her movie ‘A Very Dirty Christmas.’

On the surface of it, the movie title is a disservice and an affront to the Christian faith, considering that Christmas is associated with the birth of Jesus Christ despite the academic debates about the date, but when weighed against the shenanigans of charlatans on the pulpits, I’ll say that Ini Edo isn’t the problem of Christianity. Rather, a large number of professors of the faith are.

If Madam Ogala’s allegations concerning Mr. Okafor were anything to go by, CAN and PFN (Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria) need to explain not just the reasons for their deafening silence concerning the issue so far, but also their relevance to the Body of Christ at this juncture.

The embarrassing lawlessness and crass godlessness being perpetrated by people who call themselves by various Biblical titles like pastor, bishop, prophet, etc., can no longer be ignored. Not by CAN and PFN, at least. Indeed, the more outlandish their titles are, the more lawless, daring, and can’t-be-bothered they get.

One of the ways these impostors display their lawlessness is in the cult-like support they offer one another whenever the cup of iniquities of any of them runs over.

Chief among such supporters who metaphorically give the middle finger to Christians is Ashimolowo.

It was Mr. Matthew Ashimolowo who gave Biodun Fatoyinbo all the support he needed to continue whatever he was doing at a time some of his female church members accused him of se.xual misconduct. That was in 2019.

In December 2025, it was the same Ashimolowo that officiated at Mr. Chris Okafor’s wedding — a ceremony dodged by horr.ifying allegations that included child abuse, incest, serial r.apes, sharing of an ex-girlfriend’s nude, domestic violence against an ex-wife, serial abortions, etc., etc.

If all these allegations against an individual who calls himself a pastor weren’t enough to shock another man who claims to lead a church, then we can reasonably conclude that we have impostors on the pulpits.

And that is why CAN and PFN cannot continue to play the ostrich while people of suspicious integrity continue to use the Christian faith as a platform for self-aggrandizement.

CAN and PFN owe the Christian world explanations for their existence and seeming lackadaisicalness.
