The Super Eagles drew the first blood as FC Porto striker, Terem Mofi, finished off a brilliant pass from Moses Simon in the 23rd minute of the game.

Nigeria dominated but failed to defend a corner kick,  allowing Nicola Zalewski’s strike past goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to restore parity just before halftime.

Coach Eric Chelle made seven changes in the second half, introducing Calvin Bassey, Zaidu Sanusi, Semi Ajayi, Rafiu Durosinmi, Raphael Onyedika, Paul Onuachu and Philip Otele in the 46th minute.

The changes didn’t do much in terms of ball possession, but the Eagles took the lead again in the 77th minute.

Paul Onaucho made no mistake in converting a penalty after a polish player handled the ball in the box to make two.

The Eagles thought they had secured the win, but Przemyslaw Wisniewski scored the equalizer for the host with a 25 yards strike deep into stoppage time.

The game played inside the 58,000-capacity Stadion PGE Narodowy cauldron saw 54,000 spectators in attendance.

The Super Eagles will now focus on their next friendly match against a tougher opponents, Portugal.

The game will be played in Leiria, Portugal, on Wednesday June 10.

Governor Sanwo-Olu charged the LOC members to approach the assignment with dedication, professionalism and a clear sense of purpose.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony held at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Marina, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the Local Organising Committee’s responsibility as a significant step towards advancing sports development in Nigeria.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the National Intermediate Games would provide a platform for young athletes across the country to discover and showcase their talents while creating opportunities for growth and excellence in sports.

He said Lagos State’s decision to host the competition in October 2026 reflected its commitment to youth empowerment and sports development, noting that the event would also foster social inclusion, national integration and cultural exchange among participants from different parts of the country.

“The games represent more than a sporting event. They are an investment into the future of our young people and an avenue to strengthen unity and create opportunities through sports,” he said.

Speaking during a courtesy visit by members of the Local Organising Committee, LOC, led by the Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade, Governor Sanwo-Olu said his administration held sporting activities in high esteem and would continue to put sports in a position it belonged.

Governor Sanwo-Olu commended the reforms spearheaded by both the Director-General and the Chairman of the National Sports Commission for putting sports and sporting activities on an impressive trajectory.

“Sporting activities are not magic; they are a deliberate, intentional investment that you must build up on. You must create, follow up and follow through to get to the desire you want,” he said.

The Director-General of the National Sports Commission, Mr. Bukola Olopade, commended the Lagos State government for its sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth development.

Olopade noted that Lagos had consistently demonstrated leadership in hosting major sporting events and expressed confidence in Lagos State’s capacity to successfully host the maiden National Intermediate Games.

He said, “The 8.8 trillion dollar economy of sports that is going to happen in the next 20 years has Lagos with a footprint in it already. It is not a difficult decision for us to choose Lagos as the host state for the maiden National Intermediate Games. Lagos has been a pillar of support for us in the National Sports Commission in every aspect of sporting activities.”

Speaking during the inauguration on behalf of the Local Organising Committee, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and Co-Chairman of the LOC, Mr. Mobolaji Ogunlende, appreciated Governor Sanwo-Olu for the confidence reposed in the committee.

He assured that Local Organising Committee members would work tirelessly to deliver a successful tournament that would positively impact millions of Nigerian youths and position them for greater opportunities on the global stage.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, also expressed the readiness of Lagos to host the maiden National Intermediate Games.

The National Intermediate Games is expected to bring together young athletes from across the country, providing a pathway for talent identification, development and national sports growth.

The event is scheduled for the V.I.P. Lounge, Moshood Abiola National Stadium, Abuja.

The event is being hosted by the Office of the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Grassroots Sports Development, Adeyinka Anthony Adeboye, in collaboration with the Polish Embassy in Abuja, as part of broader efforts to strengthen sports diplomacy, youth engagement, and bilateral cooperation between Nigeria and Poland.

Speaking ahead of the event, Adeboye described the confirmation of both top government officials as a strong reflection of the importance President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration places on sports, youth development, national unity, and international partnerships under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

“The confirmation of the Vice President and the SGF clearly shows how this administration sees sports—not just as entertainment, but as a major platform for youth empowerment, diplomacy, peace, economic opportunities, and national development in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President.”

Adeboye noted that President Tinubu’s vision continued to prioritize young people through policies and initiatives capable of creating opportunities, promoting inclusion, and strengthening grassroots engagement across the country.

“Mr. President believes strongly in the power of Nigerian youths and understands the role sports can play in transforming lives, creating jobs, promoting unity, and projecting Nigeria positively to the world.”

The SSA further stated that the presence of Vice President Kashim Shettima, known for his commitment to youth inclusion and national cohesion, would further inspire young Nigerians and stakeholders within the sports ecosystem.

“The Vice President has consistently shown passion for initiatives that unite Nigerians and empower young people. His presence sends a very strong message about the future of sports development in Nigeria.”

Adeboye also praised SGF Senator George Akume for his support for developmental programmes that positively impact Nigerian youths and strengthen national integration.

“The SGF’s attendance also demonstrates the Federal Government’s collective commitment to supporting initiatives that connect people through sports, diplomacy, and positive engagement.”

According to the SSA, the watch party represents more than a football gathering, describing it as a strategic platform designed to promote friendship, cultural exchange, international cooperation, and youth-focused engagement.

“Football remains a universal language capable of bringing people together beyond borders, religion, or ethnicity. Through this event, we are building stronger relationships and creating a platform for unity and friendship.”

The high-profile gathering is expected to attract top government officials, diplomats, sports administrators, football stakeholders, youth leaders, captains of industry, and members of the international community.

The initiative also follows recent engagements between the SSA’s office and the Polish Embassy focused on grassroots sports development, sports exchange programmes, youth empowerment, and bilateral partnerships between both countries.

Ahead of the event, the Polish Ambassador to Nigeria, Michal Cygan, paid an inspection visit to the venue where he commended the level of preparation and described the initiative as an important platform for strengthening friendship and cooperation between Nigeria and Poland.

The event will officially commence with guest arrivals at 6:45 pm, while kickoff for the Nigeria vs Poland international friendly match is scheduled for 7:45 PM.

With Vice President Shettima and SGF Akume now confirmed for the occasion, expectations continue to rise for what many observers are already calling one of the biggest sports diplomacy gatherings in Abuja this year.

The team’s media officer, Promise Efoghe, confirmed that 18 player are in camp as at the time of filing this report.

The Super Eagles will take on Poland on Wednesday June 3 in Warsaw, and Portugal on Wednesday, June 10, in Leiria, Portugal.

All selected players have been directed to report to camp as the federation begins what officials describe as a crucial phase in the journey toward building a competitive national team structure.

Speaking ahead of the opening of camp, the federation’s technical director, Bodunrin Sasore, confirmed that the technical crew and federation coaches were fully prepared for the exercise, stressing that the process of identifying the best talents in the country had entered a more advanced stage.

“The coaches and I will be there because, as the person responsible for everything technical, I am working closely with the federation coaches to ensure the camp runs successfully,” Sasore said.

He added that the camping exercise will focus on player assessment, team structure, discipline, tactical understanding, and physical preparation as the federation gradually narrows its selection for the national teams.

According to him, all activities are scheduled to begin promptly at 8:00 a.m., with players expected to arrive early and fully prepared for the intensive sessions ahead.

The opening of camp marks another important milestone for the NFAF following the recently concluded nationwide tryouts, which attracted strong participation from players across different leagues and regions.

Stakeholders believe the camping programme represents a major step in the federation’s broader vision to establish a solid technical foundation for American football in Nigeria while creating opportunities for talented athletes to compete internationally.

With anticipation building around the next phase of selection, attention will now shift to Meadow Hall, where coaches and officials begin the difficult task of shaping the future of Nigeria’s national American football teams.

The president congratulated the managers, players, and fans of the Enugu-based football club for finishing the last campaign at the top of the table with 68 points in 38 matches, ahead of their closest rival, Rivers United.

President Tinubu recalled the incredible run of Rangers in the 1970s and 1980s, when the club won multiple league and FA Cup titles, especially in 1975, when they reached the finals of the African Cup of Champions Clubs, and in 1977, when they won the African Cup Winners’ Cup.

“I must also congratulate Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State on the victory of Rangers International FC. This victory is an obvious fruit of his administration’s investments in youth and sports in the state. I commend him.

“As one of the oldest clubs in Nigeria, Rangers have produced some of the nation’s finest football players who went on to make the country proud on the global stage. I am proud of their achievement,” the president said.

Tinubu also commended Rivers United for an excellent performance throughout the tournament and for demonstrating good sportsmanship.

He wished both Rangers International FC and Rivers United the very best as they represent Nigeria in next season’s CAF Champions League.

Jubilant supporters trooped into the streets shortly after the final whistle, chanting “Up Rangers, Up Rangers”.

Bars and relaxation spots across the state were filled with fans celebrating the club’s success.

A football fan, Sylvanus Okeke, described the victory as well-deserved.

“Rangers is our darling team. We are very happy that the trophy is returning to Enugu. It is a thing of joy,” he said.

Another supporter, Ngozi Ugwu, expressed delight over the club’s achievement.

“I am so happy for Rangers International FC of Enugu, our darling team.

“We are waiting for their victorious return to the Coal City,” she said.

Also speaking, Ibe Nwosu said he was confident Rangers would secure the title because of the club’s fighting spirit.

“Rangers emerged after the civil war, so the spirit of resilience is in the team.

“Any player that wears the white-and-red jersey understands its value.

“It is a worthwhile achievement,” he said.

Nwosu also commended Governor Peter Mbah for motivating the players, officials and supporters throughout the season.

Rangers defeated Ikorodu United FC 2-1 in Lagos to clinch their ninth NPFL title with 68 points.

Speaking at the post match conference, the Spaniards said he left with memories that were more important than the titles he won for the Club.

Guardiola asserted that it was the memories and connections he made, not the silverware, that would define his decade of managing City.

He said: “The luggage of memories I put inside is more than any other (team previously).

“Without 20 trophies they would have sacked me before, but you are not at home and see the trophies and say ‘Oh, how happy I am.’

“I don’t know, explain to me why the connection I had since day one for the City, but especially with the back-room staff, with the players. I know we were connected.”

Guardiola singled out captain Bernardo Silva and defender John Stones who are also leaving the club.

“I don’t cry, but when I see Bernardo cry, I cry. It was such a special moment with Bernie. He said to me, ‘I’m so tired, I cannot run.’ And the emotions were so important today with John.”

Guardiola’s 95 years old father was at the Etihad to witness his son’s last game in-charge of the club.

Guardiola was announced as City manager on February 1, 2026.

He won 20 trophies, including six Premier League titles.

He led Manchester City to their first treble in the 2022-23 season, winning the Premier League League, the FA Cup, and the UEFA Champions League.

Jean-Philippe Mateta pulled one back for Crystal Palace but it was not enough to spoil Arsenal’s celebration.

Arsenal were confirmed champions Tuesday night when Manchester City failed to beat Bournemouth, falling four points behind Arsenal before Sunday’s final games.

Arsenal were handed their 14th English League title after the game, 22 years after they last won it in the 2003-04 season.

Arsenal will now focus on the UEFA Champions League Final where they will face defending Champions Paris St Germain in Budapest, Hungary on May 30.

Bournemouth’s Eli Junior Kroupi’s brilliant strike was the final dagger that buried Manchester City’s title hope, handing Arsenal their first Premier League title after 22 years of waiting.

Erling Haaland found the back of the net in stoppage time but it was already late for a comeback for the defending champions.

The draw takes City to 78 points, four behind Arsenal with both clubs just having one more game to play, mathematically handing Arsenal the Premier League title.

For Bournemouth, who are unbeaten in 17 games, the victory secured a first ever European spot.
