The NGF president, Otunba Olusegun Runsewe, made this known at the second edition of the NGF Stakeholders’ Summit in Abuja.

The summit, themed “Finding the Fairway: Sustainable Growth and Youth Development,” brought together representatives of more than 46 golf clubs and other stakeholders.

Runsewe described the summit as a defining moment for Nigerian golf, saying the federation was opening a new window of opportunity for sustainable development.

He said the NGF was undertaking a comprehensive review of administration, grassroots development, competitions, coaching, handicap systems, infrastructure, safety, and international opportunities.

“We want to build a stronger, safer, better organised and internationally respected golf community in Nigeria,” Runsewe said.

He said grassroots and youth development remained central to the federation’s strategy, stressing the need to deliberately

Runsewe also announced plans to deepen partnerships with airlines, hotels, and other sectors to improve tournament logistics and promote sports tourism.

He said the federation was fully supporting the forthcoming All Africa Challenge Trophy, AACT, scheduled for November 1 to 7.

According to him, the tournament will hold at the IBB International Golf and Country Club, Abuja, with Nigeria prepared to host participating countries.

He commended the Ladies Golf Association of Nigeria, LGAN, President, Dr. Lami Onayi Ahmed, for her efforts towards ensuring a successful AACT.

Oba Sahees Ademola Elegushi, the royal father of the event, was in attendance along with other top personalities like the chairman of Trobel Nigeria limited, Mr. Lawal Garba, who is the chairman of the summit, and Sen. Simon Bako Lalong.

Shooting Stars thrilled their home fans, who turned out in large numbers to cheer the team to victory in their opening fixture, with their performance.

The 3SC took the lead in the 15th minute when Lucky Emmanuel struck a powerful shot from inside the six-yard box to put the hosts ahead.

Inter Lagos responded in the 33rd minute as Uchenna Njoku capitalised on an error by Shooting Stars captain, Gbolagade Adelowo, to convert a pass from his teammate, Iyede Kewe, to make it 1-1.

3SC eventually regained the lead on the stroke of half-time after Inter Lagos defender Jamiu Arowolo was penalised for fouling Shooting Stars’ Lucky Emmanuel in the box.

Sodiq Ibrahim stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 45th minute to give the Oluyole Warriors a 2-1 lead at the break.

Shooting Stars had an opportunity to extend their advantage in the second half from the penalty spot, but Adams Mustapha failed to convert, leaving the scoreline at 2-1 until the final whistle.

The victory serves as a moral booster for 3SC, who are returning to continental football this season, after a strong finish in the 2025/26 NPFL campaign.

Shooting Stars secured a return to continental football after 27 years at the end of the 2025/26 campaign when it placed  third on the league table behind champions, Rangers International, Enough and runners-up Rivers United.

It marked their highest league finish in over a decade and signaled a major turnaround for one of Nigeria’s most historic clubs.

For Shooting Stars, the 2025/26 campaign was built on defensive solidity and home dominance at the Lekan Salami Stadium, a foundation the team will hope to build on as they juggle domestic and continental engagements in the new season.

The encounter was played at the Municipal Stadium in Brzeg, Poland.

Mary Mamudu scored the only goal of the match in first-half stoppage time to hand Nigeria victory over the Poland Under-20 women’s side.

Mamudu found the net in the 45th minute plus one to give the Falconets a 1-0 lead going into the break.

Neither side could add to the scoreline after the restart as the Falconets held on for victory in their first of two scheduled warm-up matches in Poland.

The official Super Falcons X account confirmed the result after the final whistle, stating that Mamudu’s first-half strike secured the win for Nigeria.

The victory forms part of the Falconets final preparations for the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, scheduled to hold in Poland from August 31 to September 22.

The Nigeria Football Federation had earlier confirmed that the Falconets would face Poland on August 28 before taking on South Korea on September 1 in their final warm-up matches.

The friendly matches are expected to provide the players with opportunities to further acclimatise to the conditions in Poland and test themselves against different styles of play.

The matches will also help the team sharpen its tactical understanding, gain valuable experience against quality opposition and adapt to the pace and intensity of international competition.

The fixtures are also expected to enable the technical crew to assess the team’s progress and make necessary adjustments ahead of the World Cup.

The Falconets will play South Korea in their second friendly on September 1 at the Remes Resort and Spa Football Stadium in Poland, with kick-off scheduled for 4 p.m. local time.

At the 2026 FIFA Under-20 Women’s World Cup, Nigeria will compete in Group F alongside Spain, China PR and New Caledonia.

The Falconets will face Spain on September 7, China PR on September 10 and New Caledonia on September 13.

The Falconets have been one of the most consistent teams in the history of the FIFA Under-20 Women’s Women’s World Cup, finishing as runners-up in 2010 and 2014.

However, the team has never won the title.

“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football,” he said.

The president noted that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress since the reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football had continued to struggle because of structural weaknesses within the system.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that Nigerian football must begin to match the country’s exceptional talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.

President Tinubu directed the chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad, consultative reform process.

The process will include appropriate engagement with FIFA and CAF while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations within the international football framework.

The president called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work together to build a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.

Onyenkpa noted that Zenith Bank has been consistent in partnership with the elite club in the drive to keep members fit and develop the interesting game of tennis in the country.

He said: “This year’s tournament has been the best so far for us and we believe strongly that it will get better every year.  We are so delighted that there was a keen competition from day one till final day and we are also glad that the turnout was massive.

“Zenith Bank has been a reliable partner over the years. We have had a very long relationship and we say a big ‘thank you’ to the organisation.”

In the final matches of the Team Tennis Tournament decided on Friday night, Diaspora Banking defeated Prestige Banking 11-2 in the points collated in the final day in which two singles and three double matches were played.

Remi Amao defeated Ifoghale Gbodume 1-6, 6-3, 10-7 in the only win of the Prestige Banking team.

“We still have loads of events and more sponsors on board for more events later in the year. But we are just excited that this Team Event went very well in all aspects.

“We expect future tournaments in the year to get even better, as we take learnings from tournaments like this one, to improve them,” Onyenkpa added.

A total of 64 players divided into eight teams took part in the week-long competition.

The Zenith Bank 2026 Team Tennis tournament will end this evening at the Ikoyi Club 1938.

The tournament started on Monday with a total of 64 players drawn into 8 teams, each with 8 players.

The teams were then drawn into two groups.

The four teams in each group played against each other in a round robin format, with two teams in each group qualifying for the semi finals stage of the competition.

The semi final matches played yesterday, saw the teams contesting in best of three sets format, in two singles and three doubles matches, with each singles match attracting two points and each doubles match attracting three points.

In the end, Prestige Banking Team narrowly edged out Zenith Zeca Team by 7 points to 6,  while Diaspora Banking Team defeated Zenith Bank Aspire Team by 8 points to 5.

The stage is now set for the finals between Prestige Banking Team and Diaspora Banking Team, in what promises to be an explosive encounter.

The Chairman of the Tennis Section of Ikoyi Club 1938, Victor Onyenkpa, says it has been a week in which members of the club witnessed quality tennis and lots of fun.

“This tournament has lived up to its billing. It has been full of thrills and keen contest from all the participants. After what we saw in the semis, I have no doubt that the finals this evening will be very keenly contested. I am looking forward to an evening of top quality tennis.”

Lalong, who has consistently demonstrated a strong passion for the development of golf, particularly among young people, is expected to bring his wealth of experience and perspective at the summit, which is designed to provide a platform for stakeholders to deliberate on the growth, promotion and future of the game in Nigeria.

His decision to be part of the summit is being viewed within golfing circles as another indication of his enduring commitment to the sport, having over the years invested considerably in the development of golfers and golf infrastructure, both as an individual and during his tenure as Governor of Plateau State.

During his eight-year tenure as governor, Lalong sponsored the NGF/Plateau Junior Summer Golf Tournament, an initiative that provided young golfers with opportunities to develop their skills, compete and gain exposure.

The tournament became an important platform for identifying and nurturing emerging talents in Plateau State and beyond.

The second edition of the Nigeria Golf Federation Summit for stakeholders and golfers has been slated to take place between August 26 and 27 in Abuja.

Oba Saheed Ademola Elegushi is the royal father of the event which is expected to attract top personalities and stakeholders of golf across Nigeria and beyond.

The President of the Nigeria Golf Federation, Otunba Segun Runsewe, has said arrangements have reached an advanced stage for the event.

Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, former governor of Osun State, and Sen. Simon Bako Lalong, are the special guests of honour at the event.

It will be recalled that Otunba Runsewe assured that the second edition of the summit would be an upgrade of the inaugural edition.

The federation announced the decision on Monday through its official social media platform, X, @thenff.

“The Executive Committee had asked members of the technical crew of the @NGSuper Falcons to step down with immediate effect,” the NFF posted.

The decision follows the Super Falcons’ disappointing campaign at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, WAFCON, in Morocco.

Nigeria entered the tournament as defending champions, seeking to retain the continental title and reaffirm their dominance in African women’s football.

However, their campaign ended in disappointment, with the team failing to secure qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The failure marks the first time Nigeria will miss the Women’s World Cup since the competition was inaugurated in 1991.

The development represents a significant setback for the Super Falcons, who have traditionally been a dominant force in African women’s football.

The team’s failure has consequently prompted the NFF to seek a fresh technical direction ahead of its next major international assignment.

The federation now faces the urgent task of appointing a new technical team capable of rebuilding the Super Falcons.

Nigeria’s immediate priority will be the 2028 Olympic Games qualifying campaign, which is scheduled to begin in October.

The Super Falcons are expected to face Comoros in their opening Olympic qualifying fixture.

The NFF will therefore need to move quickly to resolve the coaching situation and ensure adequate preparations for the qualifiers.

A prolonged technical vacuum could further disrupt preparations and deepen concerns surrounding the team’s recent decline.

The federation’s decision signals a major shake-up as Nigeria seeks to restore the Super Falcons’ competitiveness ahead of future international competitions.

Cameroon produced a dominant first-half display at the Moulay El Hassan Stadium, scoring all three goals before the break to secure the historic victory.

Marie Manga opened the scoring in the 20th minute, heading Cameroon into the lead before Naomi Eto doubled the advantage nine minutes later.

Manga then completed her brace in first-half stoppage time, giving the Indomitable Lionesses a commanding 3-0 lead going into the interval.

Malawi, making their debut at the continental championship, attempted to fight back after the restart, with the Chawinga sisters, Temwa and Tabitha, unable to break through Cameroon’s defence.

Cameroon goalkeeper, Michaely Bihina, helped preserve the clean sheet as the Indomitable Lionesses held on comfortably to secure the continental crown.

The victory ended Cameroon’s long wait for the WAFCON title after three previous defeats in the final.

The Indomitable Lionesses had lost the 2004, 2014 and 2016 finals, all against Nigeria, before finally ending their run of disappointment in Morocco.

Cameroon thus became the fourth nation to win the WAFCON, joining record champions Nigeria, Equatorial Guinea and South Africa.

The triumph also made Cameroon only the third African country, after Nigeria and South Africa, to win both the men’s and women’s Africa Cup of Nations titles.

For Malawi, the defeat ended an extraordinary debut campaign which saw the Scorchers reach the final after eliminating some of the continent’s established teams.

Malawi had earlier stunned defending champions, Nigeria, in the group stage before defeating Ghana and Algeria in the knockout rounds to reach their first-ever WAFCON final.

Cameroon’s triumph brings the curtain down on the 2026 WAFCON with the Algeria emerging as bronze medalists after defeating hosts Morrocco in the third place playoffs.

Morocco took the lead through Kautar Azraf, whose first-half goal gave the Atlas Lionesses a 1-0 advantage at the break.

Morocco appeared to have doubled their lead in the second half when Maryam Atiq found the net, but the goal was disallowed, leaving the hosts with a narrow advantage.

Algeria continued to press for an equaliser and were rewarded in the 83rd minute when Lina Boussaha scored to bring the match level at 1-1.

Neither side could find a decisive goal before the final whistle, forcing the bronze-medal contest into a penalty shootout.

Algeria held their nerve from the spot, winning 3-2 to secure third place and the bronze medal at the tournament.

The final is scheduled for Sunday between Cameroon and Malawi.
