Adamu becomes the first Nigerian to occupy the position since the organisation’s establishment over 70 years ago.

A statement by Ademola Olajire, the Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF, on Sunday, said that Adamu replaced Veron Mosengo-Omba of the Democratic Republic of Congo.

“He replaces DR Congo’s Veron Mosengo-Omba, who stepped down to contest the presidential election of his country’s football federation, (FECOFA).

“Prior to his appointment, Adamu served as CAF’s Director of Tournaments and Events, where he played a pivotal role in the successful organisation of major continental competitions.

“His nomination was proposed by the CAF Executive Committee and ratified by the congress at its meeting held on Sunday, March 29, 2026, in Cairo,” Olajire said.

Chidozie Okorie opened scoring in the 11th minute, giving the home side an early lead.

Ahmed Musa doubled the advantage in the 45th minute to put Kano Pillars in firm control before the break.

The match, played at the Sani Abacha Stadium, saw both sides create chances, but Kano Pillars were more clinical in front of goal.

Speaking after the match, Kano Pillars Head Coach, Muhammad Babaganaru, commended his players for their determination and teamwork.

He said the victory, which earned the team three points and a clean sheet, was a collective effort and crucial in moving the club out of the relegation zone.

Babaganaru noted that the result had boosted the team’s confidence, stressing the need to sustain the momentum and secure more points, including away fixtures.

He also praised the players’ attitude and improved defensive organisation, adding that the team remained compact in spite of  a brief dip following tactical adjustments.

Enyimba Head Coach, Emmanuel Deutsch, described the encounter as difficult, noting that his team failed to perform to expectation.

“We lost again, and it is not a good situation. The home team used their advantage well and controlled key moments of the game,” he said.

Deutsch said his side made costly mistakes and were duly punished, adding that Kano Pillars deserved the victory.

He acknowledged that Enyimba were in a difficult position but expressed optimism that the team could turn things around.

“The league is not over yet. We will go back, correct our mistakes and prepare properly for the next match,” he said.

The tournament is named the Patricia Kambarami Cup, honouring the late ICC Africa Regional Development Manager and Titans Chief Operating Officer.

The match was played at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Cricket Oval, Lagos.

Nigeria won the toss and elected to bat, with captain Piety Luck and Victory Igbinedion racing to 44 runs in three overs.

Piety scored 23 off 17 balls before being bowled in the sixth over, leaving Nigeria at 50, as the side reached 56 for one at power play.

The innings maintained steady momentum, with Nigeria progressing to 78 for one midway through the innings.

Igbinedion later retired hurt on 18, while Salome Sunday added a quick eight runs before her dismissal.

Christabel Chukwuonye anchored the innings with 43 off 27 balls, guiding Nigeria to 159 for four in 20 overs.

In response, Ghana faltered early, losing five wickets for just 13 runs in 6.5 overs against Nigeria’s disciplined bowling.

The innings failed to recover, as wickets continued to fall, reducing Ghana to 20 for eight in 9.2 overs.

Peace Usen led the bowling with three for nine in four overs, including a maiden, while Mbam Henrietta took three for seven and Favour Effiong claimed two for two.

“I am happy to contribute to the team’s victory,” Usen said after being named Player of the Match.

The Paris Saint-Germain defender said neither he nor teammates should accept the trophy, regardless of any decision by Confederation of African Football.

His comments followed Morocco’s loss to Senegal national football team in the tournament final.

“My mum told me to reject the AFCON trophy. I’m officially rejecting it and hope my teammates do same. We had a chance but failed to win,” Hakimi said.

He acknowledged the result, stressing Senegal were worthy winners and cautioning against actions that could undermine their achievement.

“That’s football, sometimes you win and lose. Senegal beat us fairly and deserved it. It will be unfair to ruin their joy after the hardwork,” he said.

Hakimi added he respects CAF’s position but could not accept a title he believed Morocco did not earn on the pitch.

“I respect the CAF decision but I’m officially rejecting the trophy. I didn’t win 2025 AFCON. Congratulations to Senegal once again,” he said.

The stance highlights a rare moment in football, with a player declining recognition in favour of sporting integrity.

Morocco were among favourites but fell short, while Senegal’s triumph was widely viewed as deserved after their performance.

On March 17, 2026, CAF Appeal Board ruled for Morocco, citing Senegal’s walk-off as forfeiture under regulations, overturning the 1–0 result to 3–0.

The Senegalese Football Federation said it will appeal the ruling at the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 900th goal came 21 years after Messi scored his first in senior football for Barcelona as ​a 17-year-old in 2005.

Inter manager Javier Mascherano said Messi’s tally ⁠was “insane”.

“I’ve been lucky enough to see most, or many of the ​goals he’s scored, much closer than you all, and that’s a privilege.

“The number we’re talking about is insane, and that’s why Leo is a one of a kind,” he said.

Messi, who has won the Ballon d’Or eight times, reached ​the landmark in his 1,142nd appearance for club and country.

This is nearly 100 games fewer than Ronaldo, who took 1,236 games to  reach the milestone in September ‌2024.

Portuguese ⁠forward Ronaldo has now reached 965 goals and has targeted the 1,000-mark before he quits the game.

The majority of Messi’s goals came during his spell at Barcelona, where he scored 672 times.

He added ​32 at Paris ​St-Germain and 81 ⁠for Inter Miami and scored 115 for Argentina, with whom he won the World Cup in 2022.

Messi’s ​teammates have been able to depend on him at ​crucial times ⁠with 175 of his goals coming in knockout matches, including 35 in finals.

His 129 goals in Europe’s Champions League is second only to Ronaldo’s ⁠140.

Messi’s ​milestone goal came on a bittersweet night ​for Miami, who exited the competition on away goals after the first leg of the ​tie ended 0-0.

A statement issued on Wednesday by Ademola Olajire, NFF’s Director of Communications, said the Super Eagles would face Iran on March 27 in Antalya, at 4 p.m., before taking on Jordan on March 31 at 8 p.m.

He said Chelle also invited Maduka Okoye, Oluwasemilogo Ajayi, Frank Onyeka, Moses Simon, Samuel Chukwueze, Akor Adams and Paul Onuachu.

“Debut call-ups were handed to Emmanuel Fernandez, Philip Otele and Collins Yira Sor, while Adeleye Adebayo returns to the squad,” he added.

Nigeria showed resilience, briefly taking the lead in the second quarter, but struggled to sustain momentum against a disciplined German side.

The turning point came late in the third quarter after Nigeria led 49-46, before Germany responded with a decisive scoring run.

Leonie Fiebich sparked the comeback, combining with Nyara Sabally to shift control of the game.

Nigeria were restricted offensively during that stretch, allowing Germany to build a lead they maintained until the final whistle.

Elizabeth Balogun led Nigeria with 15 points, including three three-pointers, inspiring a strong second-quarter performance.

Germany’s Fiebich posted 15 points, eight assists and four rebounds, while Alexis Peterson added 14 points and eight assists.

Nigeria’s best spell was a 10-0 run in the second quarter, overturning a deficit to take a 31-27 lead.

However, Germany responded with a similar run spanning the second and third quarters to regain control of the contest.

Nigeria led for just over three minutes, while Germany dominated possession and tempo for most of the game.

The Nigerian side faltered in the closing stages, failing to convert key opportunities as Germany sealed victory.

Nigeria women’s national basketball team, D’Tigress, finished fourth in Group A at the FIBA Women’s World Cup qualifiers after winning two of their five games.

They recorded victories over Colombia and Philippines women’s national basketball team, but lost to South Korea, France and Germany.

Despite the results, the reigning African champions had already secured qualification for the World Cup after winning the FIBA Women’s AfroBasket 2025 title.

Nigeria claimed their fifth consecutive and seventh overall title by defeating Mali women’s national basketball team 78–64 in the final in Abidjan.

The 2026 FIBA Women’s Basketball World Cup will hold in Berlin, Germany, from September 4 to 13, 2026.

The 16-team tournament will take place at the Max-Schmeling-Halle, marking Germany’s second time hosting the championship.

A statement on the official CAF website on Tuesday said that the board upheld Morocco’s appeal and set aside the earlier decision of the CAF Disciplinary Board on the final match dispute.

It ruled Senegal’s conduct breached Articles 82 and 84, validating Morocco’s protest and confirming the forfeiture decision in favour of the Fédération Royale Marocaine de Football.

The board also found the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football infringed Article 82 through its team’s conduct during the disputed match.

All other motions and requests for relief relating to the main appeal were dismissed by the CAF Appeal Board.

On Morocco’s player Ismaël Saibari, the board upheld misconduct findings but reduced sanctions to a two-match suspension, with one match suspended.

The board also cancelled the earlier fine of 100,000 dollars imposed on the player.

CAF held Morocco responsible for ball boys’ conduct but reduced the fine to 50,000 dollars.

The appeal on interference around the OFR/VAR review area was dismissed, with the 100,000 dollars fine upheld.

However, the fine for the laser incident involving Morocco was reduced to 10,000 dollars, while other requests were dismissed.

The hosts led from start to finish at the Astroballe arena on Sunday, establishing early control and maintaining their advantage throughout the competitive encounter.

Nigeria currently ranked eighth in the world, mounted a strong third-quarter push to cut the deficit, but France responded with a composed final period to preserve their lead and close out the game.

France maintained control during the decisive moments, preventing any lead change and ensuring Nigeria never went ahead throughout the contest.

Janelle Salaun led France with 19 points and five rebounds, shooting six-of-nine from the field and four-of-seven from three-point range in nearly 30 minutes.

Valeriane Ayayi added 12 points and six rebounds, finishing with a team-best plus-12 rating and making key contributions at both ends of the floor.

Elizabeth Balogun paced Nigeria with 15 points, eight rebounds and three assists in almost 35 minutes, providing momentum during the team’s strongest rally.

France produced a decisive 9–0 run late in the second quarter, extending the lead from 45–35 to 54–35 to gain firm control of the game.

Nigeria replied with a 12–0 run spanning late second and early third quarters, trimming the deficit from 57–38 to 57–50 with Balogun contributing five points.

France built the game’s largest lead of 19 points twice in the second quarter, first at 54–35 and again at 57–38.

Nigeria never led in the contest and ultimately fell by seven points as France closed strongly.

France led for 39 minutes and 42 seconds of the game, underscoring their dominance from the opening tip-off.

Nigeria never held the lead, while the contest was tied for only 18 seconds.

In the final 55 seconds, France outscored Nigeria 4–0 to seal the victory and maintain control.

France converted two baskets, secured rebounds and committed no turnovers, while Nigeria missed their lone field goal and two free throws.
