Speaking after the Eid-el-Kabir prayer at the Dodan Barracks prayer ground in Ikoyi on Wednesday where he joined President Bola Tinubu for the Eid Prayer, Dr Hamzat urged citizens to remain tolerant and considerate towards one another.

He noted that peace and unity were essential for sustainable development and social stability.

“We must be patient with each other, obedient to the rule of law, and fear God. To fear God means you do not kill another human being, and you do not hurt another human being. Therefore, we must live in peace and harmony,” he said.

The deputy governor further emphasised the need for residents to uphold values that promote understanding, compassion, and communal living, particularly during periods of religious celebration.

He also charged parents and guardians to take deliberate responsibility for raising children with strong moral values, compassion, and a sense of responsibility towards others.

He emphasised that the lessons of the season went beyond celebration and should inspire families to nurture children who were selfless, respectful, and mindful of the impact of their actions on their families and society at large.

“Our children should be taught to consider how their conduct reflects on their family name, friendships, and the wider community. Parents and guardians, therefore, play a vital role in building a peaceful society by instilling values of love, empathy, and obedience to lawful authority in the younger generation,” he said.

Hamzat added that the decline of peace and compassion in society had contributed to insecurity and violence, expressing hope and prayers that Nigerians would collectively reject hatred and embrace the spirit of unity and peaceful coexistence.

Earlier in his sermon, the Chief Imam of Lagos, Sheikh Sulaimon Oluwatoyin Abou-Nolla, urged Nigeria, especially Muslims, to shun all acts of indiscipline, violence, and terrorism in the country to ensure a peaceful presence, progress, and development in the nation.

He noted that the essence of Islam is love, compassion, and peaceful coexistence, admonishing citizens to be more passionate about the development of their country and states, highlighting that there is violence everywhere in the country and that there is a need for all to be passionate about the betterment of everyone.

Abou-Nolla said the essence of Eid-el-Kabir is sacrifice, citing the sacrifices of leaders such as MKO Abiola and Pa Obafemi Awolowo, among other heroes of the past, whose integrity was built on national unity, selflessness, and commitment to humanity.

“We must ensure that the struggles of our heroes of the past never go in vain. It is essential for us to follow their footsteps in ensuring that our great nation continues to grow in leaps and bounds. It is also important to note that our unity as a nation is supposed to supersede,” he advised.

Yilwatda noted that Eid el-Kabir remained one of the most significant celebrations in Islam, symbolising the virtues of selflessness, unity, compassion, tolerance and total submission to the will of God, as exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim.

The APC national chairman, in a statement signed by Abimbola Tooki, his Special Adviser on Media and Information Strategy, stated that the spiritual lessons of the celebration are highly relevant to Nigeria at this critical stage of national development, stressing that sacrifice, patience, perseverance and collective responsibility are essential ingredients needed to build a stronger, more united and prosperous nation.

He urged Nigerians, particularly the Muslim Ummah, to continue to promote peaceful coexistence, national unity and harmony across ethnic, religious and political lines, adding that the Sallah celebration should further strengthen the bonds of love, understanding and brotherhood among citizens.

Yilwatda also called on the Muslim community and Nigerians at large to continue to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and its ongoing reforms aimed at repositioning the country for sustainable economic growth, improved infrastructure, national security, job creation and long-term prosperity.

According to him, while the reforms may require patience and shared sacrifice, they are necessary steps towards restoring economic stability, strengthening institutions and securing a brighter future for generations yet unborn.

The APC national chairman expressed confidence that under the leadership of President Tinubu, Nigeria would emerge stronger, more resilient and economically competitive among the comity of nations.

He further appealed to Nigerians to use the Eid celebration to offer fervent prayers for the peace, unity, security and progress of the country, as well as for wisdom and divine guidance for leaders at all levels.

Yilwatda prayed that Almighty Allah accepted the sacrifices, supplications and acts of worship of all the faithful, and grants every family peace, joy, good health and abundant blessings during and after the celebration.

He wished all Muslim faithful across Nigeria and beyond a peaceful, prosperous and memorable Eid el-Kabir celebration.

The president gave the assurance in a message issued on the occasion of this year’s Eid-el-Kabir celebrated on Wednesday.

He said the nation was on a journey of reconstruction and renewal, stressing that the reforms being carried out were already yielding fruits.

Speaking on the state of insecurity, he vowed that the country would eventually defeat all the forces of evil.

He said his government remained committed to building a Nigeria where all citizens could live in peace, worship freely, and pursue their dreams without fear.

“We will continue to invest in security, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital to fulfil the great promise of our great nation,” he added.

He called on Nigerians, on the occasion of the celebration, to embrace sacrifice, selflessness, unity, and compassion for fellow human beings.

The statement reads in full:

I extend warm felicitations to our Muslim brothers and sisters across Nigeria and worldwide as they celebrate the glorious Eid-el-Kabir, the Festival of Sacrifice.

We give glory to Almighty God for preserving our lives to witness this important celebration once again.

Eid-el-Kabir reminds us of the enduring virtues exemplified by Prophet Ibrahim—faith, obedience, and the willingness to sacrifice for a higher purpose. This sacred festival calls on all Muslims, and indeed all Nigerians and the whole of humanity, to embrace sacrifice, selflessness, unity, and compassion for our fellow human beings.

One central lesson of Eid-el-Kabir is the call to show mercy and compassion, regardless of race, ethnicity, or creed. There is no greater example of duty and devotion than Prophet Ibrahim’s willingness to offer his only son, Ismail, as a sacrifice to Allah.

As a nation, we are on a journey of reconstruction and renewal. The reforms we have undertaken are challenging but necessary to build a stronger and more prosperous Nigeria for future generations.

Just as sacrifice brings reward, I am happy that the sacrifices and efforts we have made over the past three years have yielded a more stable economy, making our country a preferred investment destination that will drive job creation and economic growth. The walk through the dark tunnel is over, and the light is here.

I am confident that, by the Grace of God, the reforms we have diligently pursued will continue to yield improved security and greater opportunities for all.

I am aware that, despite the best efforts of our security and intelligence agencies—including the recent elimination of a wanted ISIS leader—heartless terrorists and bandits still attack some communities. I assure you: you are neither abandoned nor forgotten. We will ultimately defeat all the forces of evil.

To our Muslim faithful, I urge you to use this sacred occasion to pray for our country, for peace in our communities, and for wisdom for those in leadership.

Let us pray that those who commit crimes among us may rethink and abandon their evil ways, or face the full weight of the law.

Let us also reach out to the less privileged, share with our neighbours, and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood that unite us as one people.

My administration remains committed to building a Nigeria where all citizens can live in peace, worship freely, and pursue their dreams without fear.

We will continue to invest in security, infrastructure, agriculture, and human capital to fulfil the great promise of our great nation.

On behalf of the government, I wish you all a peaceful, joyous, and blessed Eid al-Kabir. May Allah accept our sacrifices and prayers, and may He continue to bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

In a statement jointly signed by its President, Alhaji Rasaki Oladejo, and Executive Secretary, Professor Wole Abbas, the apex Muslim body in the South West congratulated the Ummah on the successful completion of this year’s Hajj rites in Saudi Arabia and the joyous celebration of Eid-el-Kabir.

Reflecting on the spiritual essence of the festival, MUSWEN stated that  “Eid-el-Kabir represents a period of deep reflection, obedience, and ultimate sacrifice, inspired by the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS). We urge all Muslims to embody the core values of selflessness, patience, and charity, especially by sharing meals and extending kindness to the less privileged during this sacred season.”

While celebrating the auspicious occasion, MUSWEN expressed concern over the persistent security challenges confronting various parts of the country.

The organisation stressed that peace and security remained the bedrock of meaningful economic growth and social development.

It therefore called on the federal government, state governments, and all security agencies to intensify efforts towards safeguarding the lives and property of citizens.

MUSWEN urged a more proactive, intelligence-driven approach to tackling banditry, kidnapping, and insurgency, so that Nigerians can travel freely and engage in their normal activities without fear.

The body also appealed to citizens to remain law-abiding, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious activities in their communities.

It reminded Nigerians that securing the nation was a collective responsibility that demands both spiritual prayers and active civic engagement.

Furthermore, MUSWEN emphasised the need for good governance, equitable distribution of resources, and people-oriented policies that address security, economic empowerment, and access to basic infrastructure.

“MUSWEN urges those in authority to prioritise the welfare of the masses and ensure that the promises of democracy translate into tangible benefits for all Nigerians, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or political affiliation,” the statement reads in part.

The organisation further called on Muslims in the South West to remain law-abiding, contribute to national development, and continue to pray for the country’s leaders as they navigate the challenges of governance.

Governor Sanwo-Olu, in his Eid-el-Kabir message released on Tuesday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mr. Gboyega Akosile, congratulated Muslims in Lagos and advised them to continue on the path of spirituality and peaceful co-existence.

He also urged Nigerians, especially Muslims, to imbibe the lessons of sacrifice made by Prophet Ibrahim and work for the peace, unity, and progress of the nation.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said Eid al-Adha became a symbolic event in the history of mankind, given the bountiful rewards that followed the patience and perseverance of Prophet Ibrahim, who held on tenaciously to his faith in God despite being afflicted.

He said: “On behalf of my family and the Government of Lagos State, I join millions of people around the world, to wish our Muslim brothers and sisters in Lagos State and in Nigeria happy Eid-el-Kabir, which comes with significant lessons for mankind.

“This symbolic Islamic festival is a reminder to us that there will always be great rewards when we have abiding faith and patience in trying periods, with persistence in prayers, and tenacity in our belief.

“It also reminds us of the sacrifice we are expected to make not only for the purpose of spiritual fulfillment but also for the progress of mankind and development of our society.

“I want to appeal to all Lagos residents and Nigerians to draw lessons from Prophet Ibrahim’s examples by eschewing tendencies that could severe the unity and stability in the country.”

Governor Sanwo-Olu also advised Nigerians to support the President Bola Tinubu administration’s efforts in building a nation that would work for all.

He said the need to keep Nigeria on the path of development was a collective responsibility of all citizens.

In a statement issued on Tuesday by his Media Office, Atiku described the festival as a profound symbol of personal rebirth, sacrifice, and absolute trust in the Almighty.

“The celebration of Sallah today is a remarkable moment as it calls our conscience to the worship of God and in having absolute faith in His divine authority as the only source of hope in the current situation that Nigeria is passing through,” Atiku said.

He further noted that the significance of Eid-el-Kabir lay in the shining example of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), who, in a moment of grief and doubt, placed absolute faith and trust in the divine decree.

The Waziri Adamawa used the occasion to call on leaders in positions of authority at all levels to emulate the leadership examples of both Prophet Ibrahim and the noble Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) by placing the welfare of their subjects first, especially in difficult times such as we are currently witnessing.

“In Nigeria today, leadership has become a status symbol. Leaders seem distant from the responsibilities that lie on their shoulders, without recourse to duties to their subjects. The occasion of this celebration is to specifically call the conscience of leaders to their duties to always ensure that the interests of the people remain paramount in their obligations,” Atiku said.

Atiku prayed that the spirit of sacrifice, faith, and compassion exemplified by the Eid festival will inspire all Nigerians towards national renewal and purposeful leadership.

In the statement issued on Monday, the minister said the holidays was declared as a respect for the faith and spiritual heritage of muslims.

He congratulated muslims in Nigeria.

According to him, it is a time for deep spiritual significance rooted in sacrifice, obedience to God and compassion for humanity.

“The federal government urges all Nigerians to use this period for prayer and sober reflection, asking for divine guidance upon the country as it continues its pursuit of peace, security, and prosperity for every citizen,” the the minister said.

Rev. Fr. Anthony Godonu, Director of Public Affairs, confirmed the development in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Monday.

Godonu disclosed that Osu passed away on Friday, May 8, 2026, after battling an illness for some time.

“He had actually been ill for a while before his passing, but he remained committed to his calling,” Godonu said.

Born on September 5, 1954, in Ubulu-Uku, Delta, Osu was ordained a priest for Lagos Archdiocese on December 5, 1981.

During his 44 years in priesthood, he served in several parishes and institutions across the archdiocese with distinction.

His pastoral assignments included Holy Cross Cathedral, St Gregory’s College, and St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Oshodi.

Osu also served as Director of Social Communications for many years, shaping the church’s media and public engagement.

Until his death, he was Parish Priest of Our Lady Star of the Sea, Northern Foreshore, Lekki.

He also served as Editor-in-Chief of the Catholic Herald, contributing significantly to Catholic journalism and religious communication.

Godonu described the late priest as warm, cheerful, and deeply devoted to both ministry and humanity.

“He was a jolly good fellow, very active, humorous, and always carried himself with joy.

“He was kind, loving, and related exceptionally well with journalists across the state and beyond,” Godonu said.

Osu served as Communications Director for over two decades with dedication and professionalism.

“He was a gifted writer, a true priest of God, and his absence will be deeply felt,” Godonu said.

He said burial arrangements would be announced later by the family and the Catholic Archdiocese of Lagos.

The pilgrims, accompanied by two officials of the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria, NAHCON, and one state official, departed the General Tunde Idi-Agbon International Airport, Ilorin, aboard a Max Air flight at 3:00 p.m., en route to Madinah.

A total of 1,714 intending pilgrims from the state are expected to participate in 2026 pilgrimage.

Bidding farewell to the pilgrim, Gov. AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara urged them to be good ambassadors of the state and Nigeria by conducting themselves responsibly and adhering strictly to the laws of Saudi Arabia.

Represented by his Special Adviser and Counsellor, Alhaji Saadu Salaudeen, the governor also urged the pilgrims to pray for peace and unity in the country.

He emphasised the need for the pilgrims to comply with all regulations and heed directives from officials, particularly the Amirul Hajj, the Etsu Tsaragi, Alhaji Abdullahi Aliyu.

AbdulRazaq prayed for a successful and hitch-free Hajj exercise and their safe return to the state.

In his remarks, the Amirul Hajj, Aliyu, assured that the welfare of the pilgrims would be prioritised in line with the commitment made to the state government.

He pledged that the delegation would discharge its responsibilities diligently to ensure a smooth pilgrimage for all participants.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary of the Kwara Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Board, Abdulkadir Abdulsalam, commended the governor for approving all requests necessary for the welfare of the pilgrims.

He said that medical personnel, including doctors and nurses, were part of the delegation to provide healthcare services.

Abdulsalam added that arrangements had also been made to provide the pilgrims with adequate feeding, including local Nigerian meals, to ensure their comfort throughout their stay in Saudi Arabia.
