In a statement issued on Saturday in Ile-Ife by the Director of Media and Public Affairs at the Ooni’s Palace, Moses Olafare, Oba Ogunwusi said he was openly mocked by some people during the difficult period.

According to the statement, the Ooni made the remarks while receiving visitors who came to celebrate with him on the birth of twin princes by one of his wives, Queen Mariam.

“I thank God today. There is nothing God cannot do,” the Ooni said, expressing joy over the latest addition to the royal family.

The traditional ruler, however, noted that he never envisaged marrying many wives while growing up, adding that circumstances and traditional demands associated with the throne altered the course of his marital life.

Oba Ogunwusi said his life journey had been marked by unexpected challenges and mysteries, particularly after ascending the throne of Oduduwa.

He recounted facing intense pressure shortly after becoming the Ooni to quickly settle into royal marital responsibilities.

The traditional ruler also revealed that efforts were made at the time to persuade his former wife to relocate to Ile-Ife, with several prominent traditional rulers and influential personalities intervening, but the move did not materialise.

Reflecting on his early years, the Ooni disclosed that he became a father at the age of 19, describing the experience as one of the most challenging periods of his life.

He said the development initially overwhelmed him, but his mother played a significant role in encouraging him to remain focused, hardworking and determined.

Oba Ogunwusi also appreciated the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for her support and encouragement over the years, describing her as a mother figure who stood firmly by him during difficult moments.

The traditional ruler thanked the visitors for their prayers, love and steadfast support, noting that the mother of the twins also extended her greetings to all who stood by her.

Earlier, the Chief Imam of Ifeland, Alhaji Abdulsemiu Abdulhammed, said the Muslim community and other well-wishers came to rejoice with the Ooni over the blessing.

“We have come to rejoice with Kabiyesi. It is God who makes a person laugh when he laughs.

“God created everything, and childbirth comes only by His command. Kabiyesi, this is worthy of thanksgiving,” he said.

Visitors to the palace included members of the Ife Muslim Community, the Hausa Community, traditional rulers from Ife North, the Giesi Ruling House, captains of industry, businessmen and various cultural groups, among others.

The command disclosed this in a statement issued on Saturday in Abeokuta by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi.

Babaseyi said the operation was carried out by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit following investigations into the abduction of three persons at Ipojo area, Iperin, Atan-Ijebu.

He explained that the victims were kidnapped on Monday and later released unharmed on Thursday after payment of an unspecified ransom.

According to him, police operatives intensified efforts to apprehend members of the gang responsible for the abduction after the victims regained freedom.

Babaseyi said the operatives, acting on credible intelligence, stormed the kidnappers’ hideout along the Ijebu-Ode/Ibadan road at about 5 a.m. on Friday.

He said that the suspects opened fire on sighting the operatives, leading to a gun duel between the hoodlums and the police team.

The police spokesperson said two suspected kidnappers were neutralised during the exchange, while others escaped into the forest with gunshot injuries.

He added that further operations led to the arrest of the suspected kingpin, Seriki Abdullahi, and another gang member, Mohammed Bello.

“The operatives responded professionally, resulting in the neutralisation of two of the suspected kidnappers.

“Other members of the gang escaped into the surrounding forest with varying degrees of bullet injuries,” he said.

Babaseyi said the operatives recovered one AK-47 rifle loaded with 10 rounds of 5.6mm ammunition and one single-barrel gun from the suspects.

He further disclosed that the police also recovered N1.5 million suspected ransom proceeds, several mobile phones and a black bag linked to the operation.

According to him, the corpses of the neutralised suspects have been deposited at a morgue for autopsy in line with standard procedure.

He said investigations were ongoing to unravel the gang’s network and arrest fleeing members of the syndicate.

The Commissioner of Police in the state,  Bode Ojajuni, commended the operatives for their gallantry, professionalism and resilience during the operation.

Ojajuni reaffirmed the command’s commitment to combating kidnapping and other violent crimes across Ogun.

This is contained in a statement by the Director, Defence Information, Maj.-Gen. Samaila Uba, on Saturday in Abuja.

Uba said that the operation was meticulously planned and executed through enhanced intelligence sharing under the Nigeria-United States security partnership.

He described Al-Minuki as a high-value target and one of the most active terrorist figures within the ISIS network.

According to him, the operation marks a significant breakthrough in ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in Nigeria, the Lake Chad Basin and the wider Sahel region.

“His neutralisation has disrupted a key terrorist network that posed serious threats to Nigeria and regional stability,” he said.

Uba added that Al-Minuki played a strategic and operational role within ISIS, providing guidance on media operations, economic warfare, as well as the development of weapons, explosives and drones.

He said intelligence indicated that the terrorist leader was recently elevated to a top leadership position within the global ISIS hierarchy.

“His elimination removes a critical link through which ISIS coordinate activities across multiple regions,” he noted.

The defence spokesman further disclosed that Al-Minuki had longstanding ties with ISIS-West Africa and was linked to several terrorist activities, including attacks on civilians and vulnerable communities.

He said the terrorist leader was also associated with the 2018 Dapchi schoolgirls’ kidnapping and had facilitated the movement of fighters to Libya between 2015 and 2016.

Uba noted that prior to joining ISIS, Al-Minuki was a prominent member of Boko Haram.

He reiterated the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to sustaining aggressive operations against terrorist groups and dismantling their networks.

“The success of this operation underscores the importance of international collaboration, intelligence sharing and joint military efforts in tackling transnational terrorism,” he said.

Uba commended the professionalism and gallantry of troops involved in the operation and appreciated the continued support of United States forces.

He assured that the military would sustain efforts to protect civilians and ensure peace and stability across the country and the region.

United States president, Donald Trump had earlier made the feat known.

In a statement he personally signed and issued on Saturday, Nigeria’s president said the feat was a manifestation of the effective collaboration of Nigeria and the United States in the war against terrorism.

The president’s statement reads in full:

“Overnight, Nigeria and the United States recorded a significant example of effective collaboration in the fight against terrorism.

“Our determined Nigerian Armed Forces, working closely with the Armed Forces of the United States, conducted a daring joint operation that dealt a heavy blow to the ranks of the Islamic State.

“Early assessments confirm the elimination of the wanted IS senior leader, Abu-Bilal Al-Manuki, also known as Abu-Mainok, along with several of his lieutenants, during a strike on his compound in the Lake Chad Basin

“Nigeria appreciates this partnership with the United States in advancing our shared security objectives. I extend my sincere gratitude to President Trump for his leadership and unwavering support in this effort.

“I commend the personnel involved on both sides for their professionalism and courage, and I look forward to more decisive strikes against all terrorist enclaves across the nation.”

The quartet of Rosemary Chigozie, Jennifer Obi Chukwuka, Rosemary Chukwuma and Miracle Ezechukwu won gold in the women’s 4×100m after clocking a time of 42.94s.

The ladies came faster than Liberia in 2nd and host Ghana in 3rd.

In the men’s 4×100m, Nigeria’s quartet of Favour Ashe, James Emmanuel, Tejiri Godwin and Chidera Ezeakor clocked a time of 38.70s to finish 2nd, bagging a Silver medal.

They finish behind Ivory Coast which clocked a time of 38.52s to win gold.

The team is still in position for more medals as Nnamdi Adeboye Onweaze qualified for the men’s 110m Hurdles final.

Onweaze will compete for the final on Saturday after clocking a time of 14.09s to finish behind Senegal’s Louis Mendy who won in a time of 13.65s.

The 24th Senior Athletic Championships started on the 12 of May and will end on 17 of May.

A statement by NAPTIP press and public relations officer, Mr Vincent Adekoye, in Abuja on Friday, disclosed that the convicts were based in Abuja.

Adekoye said that the convicts were handed life imprisonment, without the option of fine, by Justice S.M. Mayana of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, High Court 46, Apo, Abuja, following their arraignment by NAPTIP.

He said that the convicts were arraigned in line with the provisions of the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) (VAPP) Act, 2025.

The spokesman added that the development was hailed by a cross section of stakeholders and members of the Civil Society Organisations, CSO, across the country.

According to Adekoye, the development is in furtherance of the renewed commitment and determination by the present management of NAPTIP to step up the implementation of the VAPP Law and ensure commensurate justice for victims of Sexual and Gender Based Violence, SGBV, in the country.

Adekoye stated that the victim, was constantly raped when she was six years old in 2016 till 2022, when she was 12 years

when the matter was reported.

The victim recounted that in 2016, her grandmother engaged the service of James Sule, who was then their family security guard, to repair a broken toilet in their residence at Penthouse Estate, Lugbe, Abuja.

The victim recounted that while her grandmother returned to the kitchen, Sule remained in the toilet, adding that she was crying on the bed in the room over a cello tape she had spoiled when Sule called her into the toilet.

The victim said that Sule assured her he would help prevent her grandmother from punishing her, then locked the door, forcibly removed her pants, and raped her while covering her mouth, and later brought out a knife and, threatened her not to tell anyone.

She said that that marked the beginning of repeated sexual abuse, fear, pain, and trauma that continued for six years.

Meanwhile the NAPTIP press officer stated that in a move by the victim to share the sexual pleasure with his friends, Sule, later recruited two other guards in the Estate, Adamu Yau, who is the second convict, and one Muhammed, now at large.

The NAPTIP press officer said that they all together had sex with the victim whenever opportunities arose, threatening to kill and wipeout her entire family if she spoke to anyone about their act with her.

He said that the victim endured the traumatic abuse in silence for about six years before her parents noticed troubling changes in her behaviour, and became visibly agitated whenever Sule entered the house and refused to let him escort her to school or pick her up from the school bus.

“In a bid to get an explanation for the sudden, strange behaviour of the little girl, her parents took her to a prayer house where she confided in the pastor that Sule, Yau, and Mohammed had been sexually abusing her, particularly whenever she returned from school before her parents arrived home.

“The parents immediately reported the matter to the Association for Reproductive and Family Health (ARFH), which subsequently transferred the case to NAPTIP and the convicts were immediately arrested.

“Following further investigation, charges were filed in court on February 9, 2023. Sule and Yau were arraigned on October 23 of the same year on two counts charge under Section 1(1), punishable under Section 1(2), and Section 5 of the VAPP Act 2015,” Adekoye said.

He stated the convicts pleaded not guilty, when the trial commenced on December 5, 2023.

The prosecution presented five witnesses, including the victim’s mother, who testified tearfully.

The NAPTIP press officer said that seven exhibits were also tendered to support the case, including a medical report showing that the victim’s hymen was breached.

He said that all witnesses were cross-examined.

Speaking on the conviction, the Director General of NAPTIP, Hajia Binta Adamu-Bello, commended the judiciary for the landmark judgment, which she described as a clear warning to all offenders across the country.

She said, “I am excited that indeed, adequate justice, which is commensurate with the magnitude of the crime committed by the convicts, was duly served on them.

“This will go a long way to assuage the pain and traumatic experience of the victim and her family.

“It is important to point out that this is one of the fallouts of our improved strategies aimed at tightening the noose on violators across the country through stringent implementation and enforcement of the provisions of the VAPP Act to ensure the protection of all Nigerians.

“It will no longer be business as usual for them.

“I want to use this medium to appeal again to all Nigerians, especially parents, school owners, and other stakeholders, to ensure that they carry out due diligence and strict profiling on any service providers before employing them.

“The service providers include drivers, security guards, home lesson teachers, babysitters, cooks, and others. This is to avoid any unpleasant situation of this nature.

“NAPTIP appreciates the support and collaboration of the judiciary in the fight against SGBV, as well as the partnership from ARFH and other stakeholders,” Adamu-Bello stated.

On her part, the mother of the victim (name withheld), in her response, thanked the management of NAPTIP, especially the counsel, for ensuring that justice was served on the violators of her daughter.

Adekoye, however, said that  the convicts had since been taken to Kuje Correctional Centre as directed by the court, where they will spend the rest of their lives.

The incident, which occurred on Friday evening, has renewed concerns over reckless conduct by youths during social ceremonies in the community.

Eyewitnesses said a group of young men escorting a bride rode motorcycles in a dangerous and aggressive manner through a busy part of the town.

Residents described the riders as moving at high speed, performing risky manoeuvres, and showing little regard for pedestrians or other road users.

The deceased’s brother, Muhammad Haruna, confirmed the incident.

He said the situation quickly turned tragic as the convoy approached a crowded section.

“My brother was standing by the roadside when one of the riders struck him violently on the head,” he said.

He said the impact caused Abubakar to lose balance before falling into a nearby drainage channel.

“Before anyone could help him, he had already died from the injuries,” Muhammad said.

He described the death as heartbreaking, sudden, and entirely preventable.

“This is not just painful for our family, it is something that should never have happened,” he said.

Muhammad said reckless riding during bride conveyance had become common among youths in the area.

“Every celebration now comes with dangerous displays on motorcycles. Innocent people are always at risk,” he said.

He called on authorities in Yobe to introduce stronger safety regulations and enforce existing traffic laws.

“If government does not act now, more innocent lives may be lost through carelessness and indiscipline,” he said.

Muhammad also demanded justice for his late brother, insisting the rider responsible must face legal consequences.

“Whoever caused this must be identified and prosecuted. Accountability is necessary for justice and deterrence,” he said.

Residents of Potiskum expressed sadness over the incident, describing it as another warning over declining public safety during celebrations.

Community leaders said the tragedy highlighted the urgent need for awareness, discipline, and responsible conduct among young people.

Potiskum, one of the most populated areas in Yobe, has recently witnessed growing concerns over safety during public festivities.

Many residents now hope the latest tragedy will prompt immediate action from relevant authorities.

The government had earlier on Friday ordered the closure following  attacks on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community in Orire local government area where a teacher was killed and a number of students kidnapped.

The affected local government areas include Oriire, Oyo East, Surulere and Olorunsogo.

The chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board, OYOSUBEB, Dr. Nureni Adeniran,  in another statement issued on Friday in Ibadan, said that the decision followed a comprehensive security review conducted after recent attack on schools in Ahoro-Esinele community.

He said that the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, had strengthened surveillance and safety measures across the affected areas to ensure the protection of pupils, teachers and other school personnel.

According to him, the deployment of additional security operatives under the directives of the Commissioner of Police, has improved security architecture within the axis.

“The safety of pupils and teachers remains a top priority of the state government.

“Learning activities can now resume without fear as the government continues to monitor the situation closely in partnership with local authorities and community stakeholders,” he said.

Adeniran appealed to parents and guardians to remain calm and avoid spreading unverified information, assuring them of sustained security presence in the communities.

He added that the government would continue to provide timely updates on developments relating to security in the affected areas.

Speaking during the ceremony, NFF General Secretary, Dr. Mohammed Sanusi, stated that this year’s draw process was consistent with previous editions, while noting that the competition structure would be more straightforward as no team received a bye into the next round.

Dr. Sanusi assured participating teams, officials, and football stakeholders that the country’s oldest and most prestigious football competition would be maintained on a level-playing ground for all the teams, emphasizing that all regulations guiding the smooth and transparent organization of the tournament would be strictly upheld.

During the draw, defending champions Kwara United were seeded at number one, while last year’s runners-up Abakaliki FC were placed at number 64.

The tournament, as is the tradition, will be played strictly on a knockout basis.

The President, whose plane touched down around 7:12 pm at the Presidential Wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, was received by the governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu; Deputy Governor Femi Hamzat; Chief of Staff to the President, Femi Gbajabiamila; Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mudashiru Obasa, along with other government functionaries.

Tinubu, while in France, met with global investors, emphasising transparency and fiscal discipline and explaining the rationale for the swift implementation of the bold economic reforms his administration has instituted.

He also participated in the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Kenya, co-hosted by President Emmanuel Macron of France and President William Ruto.

At the event, President Tinubu called for a reform of global financial architecture and a stronger economic integration that prioritises Africa’s growth and prosperity.

He also highlighted Nigeria’s potential in the blue economy as one of the cornerstones of Africa’s development, with a commitment to share Nigeria’s maritime intelligence infrastructure with willing Gulf of Guinea states.

While in Nairobi, the president also had a bilateral meeting with his Madagascan counterpart, Michael Randrianirina.

In Kigali, Rwanda, President Tinubu joined other African leaders, investors, and Chief Executive Officers (CEOs) of global and African companies at the Africa CEO Forum to chart practical ways to accelerate the continent’s economic transformation through shared scale, regional integration, and increased cross-border investments.

He also held a bilateral meeting with the Rwandan leader and host, Paul Kagame.

He met with delegations from multilateral and multinational companies, including the International Finance Corporation, IFC, APM Terminals, and the Winme Group, with notable favourable outcomes.

President Tinubu also featured in panels and discussions that highlighted, among other things, the thrust of his administration’s economic reform programmes.

While in Lagos, the president will participate in the All Progressives Congress primary elections, starting on Saturday.

He had earlier, in a statement to party faithful, called on all participants in the primaries to “keep the peace and be ready to play as sportsmen and women in the overall interest of the party and our country.”
