Some youths have erected road signs to save unsuspecting motorists from falling victims of “ambushing” policemen allegedly extorting money from anyone found violating the BRT lane rule at Super Bus Stop, close to Abule Egba area of Lagos State.
The youths who are operating under the aegis of Citizens Intervention for Collective Humanity, CICH, said the move became necessary because the government had failed in its responsibility to warn, through road signs, against violation of the rule, thus exposing them to exploitation by policemen.
There have been several cases of alleged exploitation in that and other areas of Lagos State with the “ambushing” police officer said to be collecting about N150,000.00 from anyone caught violating the BRT lane rule.
In a trending video, the youths are seen mounting a road sign with the inscription “Do Not Enter”.
The sign is to warn unsuspecting motorists against violating the rules and being exploited by policemen said to be “laying ambush”.
They reasoned that if the government had erected a road sign such as the one they had just done, there would have been no need for police presence around the BRT lane.
The youths said since the police and government were particular about extorting money from unsuspecting citizens, they resolved to come with the initiative.

They urged other youths in the different areas of the state with BRT lane to replicate the “Do Not Enter” sign to save unsuspecting citizens from being exploited.
Said one of the youths in the video: “This is Super Bus Stop as you are descending from Abule Ebga. There is a BRT lane here. This is a federal road apparently, but the state has put a BRT lane there. As a result, you will notice that if you enter here (the BRT lane) some police officers are waiting ahead.
“Because the government will not do it (erect road sign), we’ll do it for ourselves.
“This is “Do Not Enter” (sign) and we are encouraging everybody wherever you are; let’s care for ourselves. We’ll put this one here. Let’s hope they won’t remove it…
“If you are coming from Abule Egba, do not enter (the BRT lane) because police officer are waiting ahead to extort. All of you can copy this. So, if I come to your area and see this, I’ll be cautious.
“Government has constituted themselves as opponents to us, so we should look out after ourselves…
“We are doing it because government has failed to do it as their responsibility. So, we are going to do it here.”
