BREAKING: Organised labour suspends strike for five days

The Organised Labour has suspended the nationwide strike embarked upon on Monday over the disagreement with the federal government on the proposed national minimum wage.

The suspension is said to be for five days in order to allow for continuous deliberation with the tripartite committee on the issue.

The decision was made known by the president of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Mr. Festus Osifo, shortly after the meeting of the organized labour on Tuesday.

Indication emerged on Monday that the strike was going to be suspended following the outcome of the meeting held on Monday between the federal government and the organized labour.

The Monday meeting was at the instance of the Secretary to the Federal Government, George Akume.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the federal government agreed to pay higher than the N60,000 wage earlier proposed.

It was also agreed that the Tripartite Committee would meet everyday for the next one week with a view to arriving at an agreeable national minimum wage.

Following the agreement, the Labour promised to convene a meeting of its organs immediately to consider the commitment.

There was also an assurance that no worker would be victimized as a result of the industrial action.

The communique was signed for the federal government by the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, and the Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, while President, Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Joe Ajaero, and President of the Trade Union Congress, TUC, Festus Osifo signed for the organized labour.
