The Editor of FirstNews, Mr. Segun Olatunji, has regained his freedom.

He was reported to have been released in Abuja on Thursday by the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA.

His release came after about two weeks of his abduction at his residence, at Iyana Odo, Abule Egba area of Lagos State.

His abduction was announced by the management of FirstNews.

His abduction has attracted condemnation from different journalism organisations including the Nigerian Guild of Editors and the Nigerian Union of Journalists and the International Press Institute.

In a statement by its Assistant National Secretary, Akorede Opeyemi, NUJ, said: “The disappearance of Segun Olatunji, the editor of First News newspapers, is another sad reminder of the danger being faced daily by journalists in the line of duty…

“Although it is not clear which agency of government was responsible for the arrest of the journalist, we believe that freedom of the press and opinion remain defining elements of the rule of law and democracy.

“For this reason, the Nigerian government needs to work to protect freedom of the press and freedom of movement for media professionals. Safety and security of journalists are very important.”

The different bodies had called on President Bola Tinubu to direct the release of the journalist or be charged to court if there was any offence he had committed.
