Former governor of Akwa Ibom State, Senator Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom North-West), has emerged the Senate President of the 10th Assembly.
He recorded 63 votes to beat Senator Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara Central) who recorded 46 votes.
Akpabio pairs with Senator Barau Jibrin (Kano-South) who is now the Deputy Senate President.
Recall that Akpabio, who was Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, was the preferred candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, ahead of the election.
Following his victory, the Clerk of the National Assembly has administered the oath of office on Akpabio.
The new Senate President was handed the gavel and a copy of the Senate Standing Rules.
Taking his seat after the swearing in, Akpabio exercised his authority for the first time as he hit the gavel.
