Beirut’s southern suburbs once again thundering with sound of air strikes

Fresh strike in Beirut

Israel has carried out at least 8 air strikes against the Lebanese capital, Beirut, and has continued to hit targets in other areas of the country, especially the south and the Bekaa valley.

After three quiet days in the capital the southern suburbs were once again thundering with the sound of Israeli air strikes.

Thick, billowing smoke, black at first, then grey, rose from several neighbourhoods, darkening the sky.

Two of the strikes were close to Beirut’s airport, which is still being used by scheduled civilian flights.

In some cases the Israeli military gave warnings to residents to get out, but not much time – in one place just a few minutes.

Damage and casualties are still being assessed but at least one multi-storey building has been completely destroyed.

And Israeli forces have continued to target other areas of Lebanon.

One couple were filmed trying to escape a suspected Israeli drone.

They stopped their car on the side of the highway north of Beirut and ran into the undergrowth, but were both killed by what was almost certainly a missile strike.
