Residents of Iju-Ota on Sango-Idiroko Highway in Ado-Odo Ota local government area of Ogun State, on Friday took to the street to protest the sordid state of the road which has now become a death trap for commuters.

The road, particularly the bridge at Iju/Arobieye axis, according to the residents had claimed more lives in recent time, hence the need for an emergency repair.

It would be recalled that no fewer than five persons died on Wednesday in an accident which occurred around Iju bridge.

The residents also noted that two accidents occurred on the road last week and yesterday (Thursday) with many lives lost.

Speaking to our reporter, one of the residents, Mr Murphy Ajayi, called on the government to come to their rescue and repair the road.

“We are calling on the government to please find a lasting solution to the challenges we are facing on this road. Many lives have been lost and it’s becoming unbearable,” he said.

The Sango-Idiroko highway is an economic hub and strategic road for people moving from Nigeria to neighboring countries like Ghana, Benin Republic being an ECOWAS road that links Nigeria with the rest of West African states.

The chairman of Ado-Odo/Ota local government area of Ogun State, Mr. Sheriff Adewale Musa, has charged indigenes and residents of his area to support government in nation-building.

In his Independence Day message, Musa congratulated the citizens of the area on the celebration of the 61st anniversary of the nation’s independence.

“We have every reason to be glad because it is a time for celebration and appreciation of the efforts of our heroes past: their sacrifices, hopes and aspirations that we use to navigate our great nation to the dreamland.

“It is a moment for sober reflection to reevaluate our standing as citizens of our country. Our status, as Nigerians, has imposed on us the duty to answer the clarion call in our different walks of life and contribute our quota to nation-building, especially as we battle these trying times.

“Our country, now more than ever, needs you and I to put on our thinking caps and ruminate on the way forward to redeem our nation from the current hardship that we found ourselves.

“You and I have the responsibility to shun the idea that only the government will provide the way forward. We must realise that those in government used to be individuals just like you.

“At my level, as your chairman, I will do everything in my capacity to contribute my quota to nation-building, leaving no stone unturned in bringing to reality all promises I made to you on the campaign trail.

“Nigeria is our country, the government is our government and we are its people. Our collective efforts result in our current situation and our collective efforts will get us out of it. Let us come together in unison to take our nation to the next level,” the Ado-Odo/Ota council boss said.
