The president made the appeal in a statement he issued on the APC primaries which starts with the House of Representatives contest on Saturday.

His words: “Our opponents are waiting for us to be against each other; we should disappoint them.” He said he was aware that leaders of the party at different levels had initiated efforts to produce consensus candidates as provided for the electoral act.

The president said, however, that where consensus failed, contestants should go into the primaries as brothers and sisters.

“All participants in the primaries, as contestants or voters, must keep the peace and be ready to play as sportsmen and women in the overall interest of the party and our country. We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity,” he appealed.

He reasoned that in every contest, there would be a winner and a loser.

He urged winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship by taking things in their stride and preparing for another time.

He stated that the ultimate winners would be “those who don’t choose to wreck the boat but rather work to prepare for another round.”

The statement reads in full:

Fellow party men and women, I am pleased to witness this historic moment in the annals of our party. The party we formed just like yesterday is gearing up for its fourth election cycle. It is a source of pride for me, and I believe for all our distinguished leaders and teeming members.

We founded the All Progressives Congress (APC) on the firm principles of progressive politics, consensus democracy, and personal devotion and sacrifice. This principle of selflessness and devotion has seen us go through each election cycle and come out firmer together. We must consolidate on it as we go into the primaries tomorrow.

The primary elections, kicking off with those for House of Representatives aspirants tomorrow and culminating in the presidential primaries on May 25, 2026, are not mere exercises to produce our standard bearers. They are a referendum on our unity, resilience and strength as a party. They present an opportunity to renew the bond and ideals that we share.

I am aware that, in line with the provisions of the Electoral Act (2026) and our party’s constitution, leaders at various levels have initiated conversations to produce consensus candidates. It is a commendable option that would help in reducing rancour and bad blood among party members. I note the impressive progress made in this regard and encourage fellow party members to make the most of this window to ensure a seamless process and a more unified party.

Election is an essential ingredient of democracy. Where consensus fails,  I urge us all to go into the primaries as brothers and sisters. All participants in the primaries, as contestants or voters, must keep the peace and be ready to play as sportsmen and women in the overall interest of the party and our country. We cannot afford rancorous conduct or the debasement of our democracy and party unity. In every contest, there will be a winner and a loser. I urge the winners not to gloat in victory and the losers to show sportsmanship by taking things in their stride and preparing for another time. Winners and party leaders at all levels should reach out to those who did not succeed with olive branches. We should not play the politics of old; the do-or-die politics that we have put behind us. Politics should never be a zero-sum game. Any candidate that wins does so for all of us as a party. Those who lost out have the opportunity to appeal to the party’s committees set up for redress.

To the party leadership, our governors, and other leaders, I urge you to be fair and just. You must rise above sentiment to offer all aspirants a level playing field that guarantees participation without let or hindrance. While only one person will win for every seat contested, we should give eventual losers the satisfaction of a fair contest.

The inclusion of women and youth is dear to my heart. I appeal to voters in the primaries and leaders at all levels to give special consideration to our women and youth in the contest. We cannot afford to relegate the two significant demographics of our population.

Lastly, the Police and other security agencies must remain professional and avoid acting as interlopers during this exercise. Your duties strictly centre on ensuring peaceful exercise. Nothing more.

I wish all our aspirants and party members good luck and a successful outing. I look forward to working with the victorious aspirants for the success of our great party in the general election.

Managing director of the corporation, Diop Makhtar, announced this in Kigali, Rwanda, on Thursday, during a meeting with Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu on the sidelines of the 13th Africa CEO Summit.

Makhtar led an IFC delegation that included Ethiopis Tafara, Regional Vice President, Africa, and Dahlia Khalifa, Director, Central Africa and Nigeria, IFC.

Makhtar said IFC was interested in discussing modalities for collaboration with Nigeria in energy, housing, and livestock production.

He lauded President Tinubu for the bold reforms initiated by his administration, especially the removal of the fuel subsidy and the harmonisation of the nation’s exchange rate.

He described Nigeria’s reform process as courageous and transformative, sending a strong signal to international investors about the country’s commitment to difficult but necessary reforms.

“President Tinubu, you have been so courageous in removing the subsidy. When you did it, I said to myself, President Tinubu took the bull by the horns,“ the Managing Director said.

At the meeting, President Tinubu reaffirmed Nigeria’s openness to harnessing private capital for institutional development.

He stated that it had become imperative for  African pension funds to evolve into strategic development finance instruments capable of supporting major infrastructure and productive-sector investments.

President Tinubu also said African leaders, as well as the private sector, must focus on mobilising African institutional capital to finance infrastructure, energy transition, and long-term economic transformation across the continent.

That, he said, was fundamental to the realisation of the continental effort to upscale development across the continent and lift it out of its present socio-economic challenges.

He said the continent must also focus on decentralising energy systems and transmission infrastructure to attract private-sector investment, including strengthening regional interconnectivity and transmission lines as part of Africa’s long-term industrialisation agenda.

“If you want Africa to leapfrog, then energy transmission and decentralisation are important. The funding gap is there, and we must work together,”  President Tinubu said.

The meeting discussed mechanisms for using institutional investors, local currency financing structures, and swap arrangements to deepen infrastructure funding.

Mr Makhtar said local currency facilities and banking partnerships, including structures involving Nigerian financial institutions such as Access Bank, could strengthen efforts towards interstate financial integration, ease trade, and enhance business across the continent.

He said African leaders faced common development challenges and must collectively drive what he described as “African Renaissance” built around strong African institutions and regional economic champions.

Upon arrival in Kigali, Rwanda, for the Africa CEO Forum, President Bola Tinubu met with Kagame at the Urugwiro Presidential Villa.

Both leaders emphasised the importance of reviving the Joint Permanent Ministerial Commission, JPMC, originally signed by both countries in 2021, as a vital platform for advancing their shared objectives.

They further agreed that Nigeria should host the next meeting of the commission.

In reviewing consular matters, President Tinubu stated that Nigeria would seriously consider reciprocating Rwanda’s 30-day visa-free status for Nigerians in the spirit of Pan-Africanism.

The two presidents also discussed the activation of pending Memoranda of Understanding, MOUs, in areas of tourism, Illicit Drugs, and anti-corruption—underscoring President Tinubu’s commitment to inter-African integration, mutual respect, and shared prosperity.

Presidents Tinubu and Kagame exchanged ideas towards operationalising the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, AfCFTA, between the two countries.

The two leaders have remained steadfast in their support for this agreement.

Nigeria, which last year established an air cargo corridor with Uganda Airways, is now in discussions with RwandAir to facilitate greater export opportunities for Nigerian businesses across the continent.

The appointment was made in recognition of his exceptional record of service, strategic expertise, and outstanding contributions to Nigeria’s national security architecture.

In a circular signed by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Sen. George Akume, which was issued by the Permanent Secretary, General Services Office, Dr. Ibrahim Abubakar Kana, the appointment underscored the commitment of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to strengthening internal security coordination, enhancing intelligence-driven operations, and deepening inter-agency collaboration in addressing emerging security threats across the country.

Fadewa is a highly decorated retired General with  over three decades of distinguished military and intelligence service spanning national security strategy, intelligence fusion, counter-terrorism operations, and international security diplomacy. His career reflects a rare blend of operational excellence, strategic foresight, and institutional leadership in safeguarding Nigeria’s territorial integrity and national interests.

As Principal General Staff Officer to the National Security Adviser at the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) from 2015 to 2021, he played a pivotal role in shaping Nigeria’s modern intelligence coordination framework.

He spearheaded the establishment of the Intelligence Fusion Centre, IFC, at ONSA, creating an integrated multi-agency intelligence platform that brought together the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA, National Intelligence Agency, NIA, Department of State Services, DSS, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Armed Forces to improve national threat assessment and strategic response coordination.

Following his retirement from active military service, Fadewa served as Senior Research Fellow at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja, where he continued to provide strategic thought leadership on policing, civil-security cooperation, and national security reform.

His scholarly contributions include the widely acclaimed monograph titled “Policing and National Security in Nigeria,” which offers practical frameworks for strengthening civil-security collaboration.

President Tinubu expressed confidence that the appointment of Fadewa will further enhance the administration’s efforts toward achieving a safer and more secure Nigeria through improved coordination of homeland security initiatives, intelligence integration, and proactive risk management.

He also urged him to deploy his wealth of experience, professionalism, and strategic insight in advancing national security objectives and supporting the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, NSA, Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, who undertook a three-day working visit to the United States from May 4 to May 6, held a series of high-level engagements with senior officials of the U.S. government and conveyed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s strong commitment to Nigeria’s longstanding strategic partnership with the United States.

Ribadu met with US Vice President J. D. Vance, the Acting National Security Advisor and Secretary of State, Marco Rubio; the Undersecretary for Political Affairs, Allison Hooker; and Assistant Secretary of War Daniel Zimmerim.

The meetings provided an opportunity for both sides to review the current state of Nigeria–United States relations and to further strengthen ongoing collaboration in counter-terrorism, defence cooperation, intelligence sharing, regional security, economic resilience, and democratic governance.

Ribadu emphasised the importance of sustained cooperation in addressing emerging security challenges confronting West Africa and the broader Sahel region, particularly terrorism, violent extremism, transnational organised crime, and cyber threats.

The NSA noted that Nigeria remained fully committed to working with international partners in promoting peace, stability, democratic governance, and economic development across Africa.

He further underscored Nigeria’s role as a regional leader and frontline state in counter-terrorism efforts across the Lake Chad Basin and West Africa.

Discussions also focused on the evolving security situation in the Sahel, the need for enhanced regional cooperation, and the importance of strengthening institutional capacity to respond effectively to complex and asymmetric threats.

During his meeting with Under Secretary for Political Affairs Allison Hooker at the U.S. Department of State, NSA Ribadu expressed Nigeria’s appreciation to the U.S. government for its continued support and cooperation in various sectors, particularly in security assistance, intelligence collaboration, defence capacity building, humanitarian support, and counter-terrorism operations.

He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to implementing the agreed roadmap under the Nigeria–U.S. Joint Working Group, JWG, established to advance structured bilateral cooperation on strategic and security-related matters.

Both sides reviewed progress under the JWG framework.

They discussed practical measures to enhance the implementation of agreed initiatives, including intelligence sharing, military cooperation, counterterrorism support, border security, strategic communications, and capacity development for Nigerian security institutions.

The discussions also highlighted the importance of maintaining regular channels of communication and strengthening institutional coordination between the two countries to address common security challenges.

The NSA also used the opportunity to brief U.S. officials on ongoing reforms and operational measures being undertaken by the Government of Nigeria to improve national security, stabilise affected communities, and address the root causes of insecurity.

He emphasised the administration’s whole-of-government approach, which combines kinetic and non-kinetic measures, including community engagement, economic development, deradicalisation initiatives, and regional partnerships.

U.S. officials commended Nigeria’s continued leadership role in regional peace and security efforts and acknowledged Nigeria’s importance as a strategic partner of the United States in Africa. Both sides reaffirmed their shared commitment to democratic values, regional stability, economic cooperation, and the promotion of sustainable peace and security across West Africa and the Sahel.

The meetings concluded with a mutual commitment to deepen further bilateral engagement through sustained diplomatic dialogue, enhanced defence and security cooperation, and the effective implementation of ongoing bilateral initiatives under the Joint Working Group framework.

Both Nigeria and the United States expressed optimism about the future of the strategic partnership.

They reaffirmed their readiness to continue working closely to advance shared interests and address common global and regional challenges.

At the meeting, the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele, highlighted Nigeria’s strong GDP growth in dollar terms in 2025.

He said Nigeria recorded 11.2% GDP growth in dollar terms last year, a record that reinforced the country’s ambition to achieve a $1 trillion economy in 2030.

Oyedele emphasised the government’s near-term priorities of translating reforms into results for the Nigerian people.

He also pledged to publish quarterly financial data.

The Director General of the Debt Management Office, Mrs Patience Oniha, assured investors of the government’s responsible approach to debt financing and its focus on sustainable debt management.

The investors were from Citibank and France’s Amundi, led by Valerie Baudson.

There were also BlueCrest, the Britain- and South Africa-based Ninety One, Kirkoswald Capital, Principal Finisterre, US groups Prudential Global Investment Management (PGIM) and Mesarete Capital.

President Tinubu, who left Nigeria on Sunday for a three-nation trip, said the economic reform programme of his administration included measures to remove economic distortions and stabilise macroeconomic indicators, laying the foundation for sustained inclusive growth.

He said his government was committed to deepening reforms, enhancing transparency across the oil value chain, and implementing a multi-pronged security strategy, including police decentralisation and disrupting terrorist financing.

“The focus remains on policy stability and diligent execution to ensure these strategic shifts translate into concrete benefits for all Nigerians,” President Tinubu said.

Some of the investors who spoke at the meeting commended the government’s transformative reforms and expressed optimism about the Nigerian economy.

One of the investors asked President Tinubu about his post-2027 agenda.

He promised to strengthen fiscal discipline and transparency, and to deliver policy consistency.

She pointed out that the event which was also the distribution of farming tools and implements to farmers, was a visible testament to the nation’s commitment to agricultural transformation, food security, and rural prosperity.

It signals a deliberate transition from subsistence practices to modern, mechanised, and commercially viable agriculture.This gesture will no doubt empower our farmers with the tools needed to increase productivity, enhance livelihoods, and strengthen our GDP”.

“In declaring a State of Emergency on Food Security on July 13th, 2023, His Excellency, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, made it clear that food availability and affordability must be treated as national priorities.  With the direct support to farmers through the release of fertilizers and other agricultural inputs, this initiative by the Niger State government aligns with the vision of the Renewed Hope Agenda of the President on boosting agriculture for food self-sufficiency”.

The First Lady of Nigeria paid glowing tribute to the nation’s farmers who she described as the backbone of Nigeria.

“I want to especially commend our farmers,  the men, women, and youth who rise before dawn and labour tirelessly on the land, so that millions of families can have food on their tables. You are the backbone of our nation’s survival, and the reason for today’s support is to ensure that your efforts do not go unrecognized”.

Earlier in his remarks, the Niger State governor, Farmer Mohammed Umaru Bago, emphasized that agriculture remained a priority of his administration noting that with the sector being one of the pillars of the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the sector will continue to get adequate support and attention.

He commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his boldness in removing fuel subsidy which he said necessitated the nation to look more towards agriculture.

“The removal of fuel subsidy has made more money available to the sub-nationals which has made us, as a state to achieve more in the area of agriculture.”

The Minister of State for Agriculture and Food Security, Sen. Abdullahi Sabi, in his remarks commended the Niger State government saying with the provision of modern tools and implements, there would be enhanced productivity from farmers.

The APC national chairman, Prof Nentawe Yilwatda, explained that with the flag-off of the Sokoto-Badagry Highway which will have over 300 dams, agricultural production and improved transportation of farming season produce was assured.

The First Lady of Nigeria Senator Oluremi Tinubu then handed over a total of 250 tractors with 75horse power capacity, 50 combined tractors, 150,000 bags of fertilizers and others to be distributed among the 25 local government areas of the State.

The announcement was made on Friday in a press statement by his media aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

Tinubu’s first stop will be in France, after which he will depart for Nairobi, Kenya, to attend the Africa-France Summit scheduled to begin next week.

Co-chaired by President Emmanuel Macron and President William Ruto, the summit focuses on energy transition, green industrialisation, digital transformation, restructuring of global financing architecture, and climate action.

Tinubu’s participation at the summit from May 11th to May 12th will underscore Nigeria’s unwavering commitment to strengthening strategic partnerships with African nations and the French Republic.

The summit, with the theme “Africa Forward: Africa-France Partnerships for Innovation and Growth”  will provide a high-level platform for African leaders and their French counterparts to deliberate on critical issues affecting the continent, including economic transformation, climate resilience, infrastructure development, youth empowerment, technological advancement, and peace-building initiatives.

At the end of the Kenyan summit, President Tinubu will depart for Kigali, Rwanda, to attend the annual Africa CEO Forum, taking place between May 14th and 15th.

With the theme “Scale or Fail”, this year’s Africa CEO Forum will be the largest gathering of African private sector leaders, investors, and policymakers, focusing on accelerating economic transformation through shared scale, regional integration, and increased cross-border investment.

Held in partnership with the International Finance Corporation, IFC, the summit brings together over 2,000 top executives and national leaders to debate strategies for building resilient, competitive industries.

At the two summits, President Tinubu will deliver statements highlighting his administration’s ongoing reforms to reposition the nation as a prime destination for investment and growth.

He will also hold high-level meetings with top-tier global and African business leaders.

President Tinubu will be accompanied on the trip by some of his ministers and senior aides.

He will return to Nigeria at the end of the Rwanda summit.

The president has also redesignated the Office of the Special Adviser (Energy) as the Special Adviser (Oil & Gas) to clarify roles and avoid duplication of functions within the energy governance framework.

Babalola, a former Minister for Power, according to the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, brings deep sectoral expertise and a proven understanding of the structural and operational challenges within the electricity value chain.

He said his appointment underscored the president’s determination to undertake a decisive and results-driven reset of Nigeria’s power sector.

The Presidential Taskforce, which he heads, will operate under a direct presidential mandate as a high-level, delivery-focused vehicle to restore discipline, efficiency, and commercial viability across the power sector, while ensuring effective coordination among relevant ministries, departments, and agencies.

The Taskforce’s mandate includes driving a comprehensive system reset of the electricity sector; implementing a “Performance Before Expansion” framework; reducing technical, commercial, and collection losses; and strengthening cost discipline and tariff integrity.

It will also enhance revenue assurance and sector liquidity; restore grid discipline and market integrity; promote productive use of power across key sectors; develop Electricity Growth Zones; reduce fiscal exposure; and deliver a 90-day implementation blueprint.

The president expects Babalola to bring urgency, discipline, and a strong execution focus to this assignment, in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda, to deliver measurable improvements in power supply and sector performance.

The Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga, made this known on Thursday in a press statement.

He said the nomination had been transmitted to the Senate for screening and confirmation in accordance with the Constitution.

The nomination, he explained, followed the resignation of the former minister, Adebayo Adelabu, who stepped down from office to pursue elective office.

Mr Tegbe, from Oyo State, is a fiscal and economic reform expert with over 35 years of experience spanning the public and private sectors.

He is a former Senior Partner and Head of Advisory Services at KPMG Africa, where he led wide-ranging initiatives in fiscal policy reform, institutional transformation, and governance.

He has also advised key government institutions and private sector organisations on strategic reforms, regulatory frameworks, and investment structuring.

He is at present the Director General and Global Liaison for the Nigeria-China Strategic Partnership, NCSP, where he is responsible for strengthening bilateral development cooperation between Nigeria and the People’s Republic of China.

The NCSP also coordinates engagements with public sector stakeholders to advance economic and social development in line with FOCAC objectives.

Mr Tegbe’s experience includes significant engagements within the power sector, particularly in regulatory and institutional reform involving agencies such as the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, and the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Company, NBET.

His nomination is expected to strengthen further ongoing efforts to reform the power sector, enhance grid stability, and attract sustainable investment in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda.

The president expects the Minister-Designate, upon confirmation, to bring his extensive expertise to bear to advance critical reforms and deliver improved outcomes for Nigerians in the power sector.
