President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive reform of Nigerian football to overcome repeated failures to qualify for major regional, continental and world tournaments.

“The reform must respond to a longstanding need to strengthen governance, administration, stakeholder representation, development pathways, domestic competitions and accountability across Nigerian football,” he said.

The president noted that while other sports had recorded meaningful progress since the reset of the sports sector under the re-established National Sports Commission, football had continued to struggle because of structural weaknesses within the system.

“Football, Nigeria’s most popular sport and the greatest beneficiary of public support, investment and national attention, has continued to struggle basically due to structural deficits within the system,” Tinubu said.

He stressed that Nigerian football must begin to match the country’s exceptional talent, passion and resources with stronger institutions and sustained performance.

President Tinubu directed the chairman of the National Sports Commission to work with the NFF Secretariat and relevant football stakeholders to ensure continuity in essential football administration and facilitate a broad, consultative reform process.

The process will include appropriate engagement with FIFA and CAF while safeguarding Nigeria’s obligations within the international football framework.

The president called on football stakeholders and Nigerians to support the transition and work together to build a stronger, more accountable and successful football system.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the immediate preparation of a comprehensive National Threat Assessment and a rolling five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan to strengthen coordination across Nigeria’s defence, intelligence and security capabilities.

The president’s Special Adviser on Homeland Security, Major General Adeyinka A. Famadewa, will coordinate and provide secretariat support for the nine-man committee the president constituted to draft the strategic defence operations plan.

Other members of the committee are the National Security Adviser, Malam Nuhu Ribadu; the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa; the Minister of State for Defence, Alhaji Bello Muhammad Matawalle; the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede; the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. General Waidi Shaibu; the Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke; and the Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Idi Abbas.

The Director-General of the Department of State Service, Tosin Ajayi, and the Director-General of the National Intelligence Agency, Ambassador Muhammed Muhammed, are also members of the committee.

President Tinubu gave the directive on Wednesday at the Federal Executive Council meeting at the State House, Abuja, stressing the need for a coherent framework to respond to evolving security threats nationwide.

The President said the new framework would provide a common understanding of the threats facing the nation, the operational objectives to be achieved and the capabilities required to address them.

According to him, recent security successes, including the rescue of pupils and teachers abducted in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, demonstrated the importance of improved coordination among defence, security and intelligence agencies.

“The operation demonstrated what can be achieved when our agencies work together with a clear objective and the necessary intelligence,” the president said.

President Tinubu noted that operational requirements were currently often considered individually, without sufficient reference to an agreed national threat assessment or unified medium-term plan, making coordination more difficult and limiting the efficient deployment of resources.

He said the National Threat Assessment would identify the principal threats facing the country, determine their relative urgency and establish operational objectives for addressing them.

The Strategic Defence Operations Plan, he added, would translate the assessment into clear operational priorities, identifying the forces and capabilities required in each theatre, existing capability gaps, equipment and support needs, and an implementation timetable.

Under the presidential directive, the committee may also consult or co-opt representatives of other ministries, departments and agencies where their participation is required.

President Tinubu directed the committee to commence work immediately and submit the completed National Threat Assessment and Strategic Defence Operations Plan for his consideration and approval within 90 days.

Once approved, the plan will serve as the principal framework for coordinating military and defence operations over the medium term.

It will also provide the basis for preparing a corresponding multi-year defence expenditure and procurement plan, ensuring that resources are directed towards agreed operational priorities and critical national security requirements.

The president further directed the Secretary to the Government of the Federation and the Office of the National Security Adviser to take all necessary steps to give immediate effect to the directives.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has described the re-election of Governor Ademola Adeleke in the just-concluded Osun election as a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in Nigeria under the All Progressives Congress administration.

The president made the remark on Sunday in a statement by his media aide, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

Said the president: “I called Governor Ademola Adeleke earlier today to congratulate him on his election victory in Osun State. His victory once again confirmed the confidence the people of Osun State have in him.

“I wish him great success as he prepares to lead the state for the next four years. Now that he has won, Governor Adeleke must unite the people of Osun State and rally them for growth, stability, and social and economic progress, regardless of the political choices they made at the election.

“I salute the courage and discipline displayed by other contestants in the election. Their participation deepened and enriched our country’s democratic culture. The outcome of the election reflects the will of the people and is a fitting assurance that democracy will continue to flourish in our land.”

Tinubu commended the Independent National Electoral Commission and the security agencies for conducting a peaceful and transparent election that produced a clear winner.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, on Thursday in Abuja, said refineries would not be allowed to waste away, given the huge investments made over many years.

He assured that in-depth research, restructuring, and leadership would reposition them to deliver value and profit.

Tinubu stated this when he received the National Executive of the Nigerian Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG, led by its national president, Comrade Salimon Akanni Oladiti, at the State House.

The president, while responding to a request by NUPENG to revive the nation’s oil refineries, explained that the challenges confronting the refineries would be addressed through a systematic, evidence-based approach rather than short-term interventions.

According to him, the federal government will encourage detailed research and technical assessments to identify the structural, operational, financial and managerial challenges affecting the facilities and develop sustainable solutions.

“The refineries that you mentioned are going to come back to work; we’re just building a very firm, resetting, and structural reworking of the economy of it. Ordinary flame and smoke of a refinery doesn’t mean that it’s working until it’s profitable and yields the value for which it is built.

“I’m not a man who goes looking back on everything because I’ve accepted the assets and liabilities of my predecessor. No matter what has happened in the years past, it’s now my responsibility as president to fix it and make it work for the greatest common good of our population. I take responsibility for that, and we will do it.

“I will just appeal to all of you to let us work diligently and passionately on this democracy. Democracy is about celebration of freedom and opportunity that must be cherished by all of us, just like a painful childbirth, but the joy is everlasting and long. And I promise you, you will enjoy a better Nigeria,” the president said.

Responding to the remark on the implementation of local government autonomy, President Tinubu promised that the constitutional issues involved in its implementation are being reviewed for possible fine-tuning.

He appealed for understanding among stakeholders.

The president also took the opportunity to acknowledge a former President of the Union, the late Frank Kokori, for his role in deepening democracy in Nigeria.

“You brought good memories of my relationship with Frank Kokori; may his soul rest in peace. We struggled for this democratic dispensation together, and it was very tough for us to have this democracy, and you have been a very good partner of the government in progress,” he said.

President Tinubu also promised the NUPENG executives more inclusion in the implementation of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas.

He, however, challenged them to make the effects of the CNG drive get down to the commuters.

In his remarks, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Alhaji Mohammed Idris, commended NUPENG for acknowledging the positive outcomes of President Tinubu’s reform agenda, stating that that mutual understanding had reduced friction between trade unions and the government.

“Your Excellency, it is not common that you find trade unions come back to the President and say, ‘Thank you for what you have done.’ I think this is an uncommon situation. We saw that when the NLC leadership came to you two years ago, you approved the wage increase for Nigerian workers.

“In that meeting, you mentioned to the Labour Unions that there was no need for them to wait for five years before they could come for the review of the minimum wage.

“They actually had that request written somewhere, but they didn’t know that this was something that you already had in mind, so, for the first time, we saw the Labour Unions standing and giving you a standing ovation here in this room; it is very uncommon,” the minister said.

The minister added that it was instructive that the leadership of an influential and central trade union, such as NUPENG, had come to acknowledge and appreciate the positive developments arising from this administration’s reform agenda and its impact across various sectors of the economy.

“For their leader to come and recognise the reforms that you are doing, especially the major reforms you undertook in this country – the removal of fuel subsidy and also acknowledging that everywhere you go is a construction site in this country, is a good development,” he said.

The NUPENG president, Comrade Oladiti, commended the president for taking the bold decision to end the fuel subsidy regime, describing the policy as a courageous step that had saved the country from decades of financial drain and depletion of national reserves.

According to him, the decision to remove the fuel subsidy has begun to yield enormous benefits for the country by freeing resources for critical infrastructure development and other sectors of the economy.

He particularly commended President Tinubu’s renewed commitment to rehabilitating and constructing major highways across the country, especially the ongoing construction of the 750-kilometre Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and the 1,068-kilometre Sokoto-Badagry Superhighway as major examples of infrastructure projects.

“For our members, a good road is the difference between arriving home safely and never arriving at all. Every stretch of highway rehabilitated or constructed means fewer accidents, fewer spillages, fewer lives lost, and less stress for the men behind the wheels. Mr President, that is a reform our members feel in their bones, and for it we say thank you because our tanker drivers and other road users are already seeing the benefits of the rehabilitation and construction of federal highways,” he said.

He, however, appealed to the president to sustain efforts to revive the refineries, stressing that functional refineries would strengthen Nigeria’s energy security, reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, and create more opportunities for Nigerian workers.

The NUPENG leaders later decorated the president as the grand patron of the union.

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has described as inaccurate the press reports stating that it had sent a letter to the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, declining an invitation to observe the 2027 polls in Nigeria.

The reaction to the reports is contained in a press statement by the EU Ambassador to Nigeria and ECOWAS, Gautier Mignot.

The reports had claimed that the European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS had cited the worsening security situation across the country and the hostile treatment of its observers and officials after the publication of its final report on the 2023 general election as reasons for its said refusal.

But denying the claim the EU delegation confirmed that it received a formal invitation (not a request) from the INEC, dated 17 April 2026, to deploy observers for the 2027 General Elections.

The delegation said in its response dated 28 July 2026, it thanked the INEC for its kind invitation and informed that the EU would field an Electoral Expert, EEM, composed of two to four independent experts, who would formally be accredited as observers with the INEC.

The delegation explained in the letter: “An EEM, like an Electoral Observation Mission, assesses whether the electoral process is conducted in line with international, regional and national obligations and commitments on the conduct of democratic elections to which the country has subscribed. The EEM submits a final report with recommendations on how to improve the electoral framework and future electoral processes, the report will be shared with the government, and if they agree, it can also be released to the wider public.”

The EU delegation further underlined that the two alleged reasons mentioned in the press reports did not appear in the letter.

“These are pure speculations. The European Union decides every year on electoral missions to be sent to partner countries issuing invitations to the EU and, if the decision is positive, the kind of mission to be sent to each of them, depending on individual situations and available resources. It is on this basis that the decision to conduct an EEM in Nigeria has been taken and will be further consulted with the relevant Nigerian authorities for its implementation. This decision does not affect in any way the continuation of the implementation of the EU-funded project “Support to Democratic Governance in Nigeria” including its dimension of support to the electoral process,” the delegation stated.

It added that the EU delegation respectfully reminded members of the esteemed media community that, to avoid issuing such misleading information about positions or statements of the EU, they could simply check their accuracy with the press and communication office of the EU delegation.
