Governor of Rivers State, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, on Wednesday, broke his silence over widespread speculations that he may have defected from the All Progressives Congress, APC, to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the ongoing realignment of political forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fubara who reaffirmed his membership of the APC spoke during an inspection tour of the newly constructed General Hospital and the fully remodelled Neuropsychiatric Hospital, both in Rumuigbo, Obiakpor local government area of Rivers State.

He said that said that contrary to the “erroneous reports” in a section of the media in the last couple of days, suggesting that he had joined another political party, he remained a member of the ruling party and would continue to work for its overall interest.

“I know that there have been a lot of drama in the media; one story or another. I am a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and nothing has changed. People should stop using whatever situation that they pick up from the social media or their own interpretation of any situation to present me wrongly.

“I’ve not gone anywhere; I’m still a member of the APC and I remain a member. Whatever happens, what is important is supporting the overall interest of the party,” he said.

Fubara was conducted round the facilities by the Director of Medical Services in the Rivers State Ministry of Health, Dr. Vincent Wachukwu, who led him through the hospital wards, a conference hall, ICT centre, students hostel, staff quarters, and other critical sections.

He expressed delight at the completion of the two projects which according to him, were conceived to address critical needs in the health sector in the state.

He recalled that while the rehabilitation of the Psychiatric Hospital became necessary at some point, the administration also discovered that the area had no General Hospital to take care of the basic health needs of the people.

“This very project, if you could remember, when we came in we had an issue that required our sudden visit and it had to do with mental health. So when we came here for the inspection of the Rehabilitation Centre that the board was trying to put together, we found out that we had more issues than even the mental health issue.

“We didn’t have a General Hospital to serve the people within this area. The closest medical center that they had here was the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, UPTH, which is very far from here. We felt that with the space we have in this compound, it will be proper for us to also have a General Hospital situated in this particular facility to take care of the neighbouring communities up to Rumuola, Rumuolumeni and all the surrounding areas.

“Today, to the glory of God, we can see that the project is already completed.”

Rivers State House of Assembly has continued with the impeachment process against Governor Siminilayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, over alleged constitutional infringement.

This decision followed the voting carried out to that effect by the lawmakers at a session chaired by the Speaker of the House of Assembly, Martins Amaewhule.

Two votes were taken, one to determine whether or not the impeachment process against Fubara should be continued and the second, on the deputy governor, Odu.

The 25 members present at the session voted for the continuation of the process.

After the voting, the Speaker said following the power conferred on him by the constitution, with the House having resolved to continue with the impeachment process, he would write the Chief Judge of the state to set up an investigative committee to carry out a probe.

Specifically, the House accused the governor of gross constitutional infringements and deserved to be removed.

Before the plenary, members of the House of Assembly, addressing a press conference, vowed to continue with the impeachment process against Fubara and Odu.

The legislators said the governor and his deputy had grossly violated the constitution.

They said despite suggestions by some of the members that alternative solutions should be found to resolve the issue, the governor and his deputy had allegedly continued to intimidate the legislators.

They said it was obvious that the governor was absolutely authoritarian and should be removed.

They therefore resolved that they would continue with the impeachment process.

The impeachment process was started on Thursday, January 8, 2026.

It would be recalled that during the week, the Pan Niger Delta Forum, PANDEF, inaugurated a peace and reconciliation committee to resolve the issue.

The committee which is chaired by a former Attorney-General of the Federation, Kanu Agabi (SAN), was given two weeks to resolve the issue.

The group was particular about ensuring peace in the oil rich state.

The President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, has directed his lawyers to withdraw all ongoing defamation lawsuits against several individuals, saying he was moved by counsel of the Priest during a New Year Mass.

Speaking at the Sacred Heart Parish in Uyo on Thursday, Akpabio said he had filed nearly nine lawsuits against individuals he accused of defaming him.

He said, “I had almost nine cases in court against some individuals who defamed me, who lied against me, who slandered my name.

“But I listened to the priest and suddenly realised he was talking to me, so I hereby direct my solicitors to withdraw all lawsuits against them.”

In his homily the Parish Priest of Sacred Heart Parish, Aka and the Vicar-General of the Catholic Diocese of Uyo, the Very Reverend Father Donatus Udoette said the greatest thing that man needed was peace and admonished Parishioners to live in peace with one another.

“You have to let go of the past, no matter what it was. All of us carry some luggage of pain and hurt. You have to let go if you want to move on,” he said.

With Thursday’s announcement, Akpabio has formally ended all pending legal disputes arising from defamation claims, signalling closure to the publicised litigations as the year begins.

The Health Supervisor in-charge of Tuberculosis, Buruli Ulcer and Leprosy, TBL, in Awka North, under the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, ASPHCDA, Mrs. Celestina Igwe, has stressed that early detection and accurate information are crucial to reducing the growing burden of Buruli Ulcer in rural communities.

Mrs. Igwe made this known during the Awba-Ofemili Community Health Awareness Campaign held on Thursday, October 23, 2025 (Nkwo Market Day) at the Civic Centre, Awba-Ofemili, themed “Buruli Ulcer (Elu-Ulee or Ulee-Okpa): Know the Signs, Stop the Spread.”

She explained that Buruli Ulcer, locally known as Elu-Ulee, is a neglected tropical disease caused by Mycobacterium ulcerans; the same bacterial family responsible for tuberculosis and leprosy.

The disease, she said, often begins as a painless swelling, nodule, or plaque on the skin, which can progress into large ulcers and severe deformities if left untreated.

“Early detection and correct information remain our strongest tools in reducing the burden of Buruli Ulcer, especially in rural communities where myths and misinformation delay treatment,” Mrs. Igwe said.

Accompanied by the Head of the Primary Health Centre, Awba-Ofemili, Mrs. Justina Ofuonu, Mrs. Igwe warned that misinformation, including beliefs that the disease is caused by witchcraft or spiritual attacks, continues to endanger lives and hinder timely medical intervention.

“Many people waste precious time seeking spiritual help instead of visiting health facilities. This allows the infection to spread deeper, causing severe damage that could have been easily prevented with early care,” she said.

She commended the Awba-Ofemili Development Union, ADU, Health Committee, led by Ogbuefi (Sir) Remmy Nweke, for organising the campaign in collaboration with the Nigerian Red Cross Society (Anambra State Branch) and the ASPHCDA, describing it as a “timely and impactful initiative that brings health education to the grassroots.”

Mrs. Igwe further noted that the State TBL Unit had intensified outreach and surveillance efforts across Awka North to identify early cases and improve community health literacy.

She urged residents to report any unusual skin swellings or ulcers at the nearest Primary Health Centre, assuring them that treatment was available within the state at St Joseph Specialist Hospital Adaziani.

“With awareness, early detection, and prompt treatment, Buruli Ulcer can be effectively controlled, saving lives and preventing disability,” she emphasized.

In her remarks, Mrs. Justina Ofuonu, Head of the Primary Health Centre, Awba-Ofemili, pledged continued collaboration with the ADU Health Committee and community volunteers to strengthen early diagnosis, referral, and follow-up care.

The event featured sensitization talks by Red Cross educators, free medical checks, and distribution of First Aid boxes to schools and local institutions, with wide participation from community leaders, teachers, and students.

The Awba-Ofemili Development Union, ADU, Health Committee has called for greater vigilance against health-related misinformation, warning that myths and falsehoods about diseases like Buruli Ulcer (Elu-Ulee) could undermine community health development.

This call was made following the successful Awba-Ofemili Community Health Awareness Campaign 2025, themed “Buruli Ulcer (Elu-Ulee): Know the Signs, Stop the Spread,” held on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Civic Centre, Awba-Ofemili.

Speaking at the event, Ogbuefi Remmy Nweke, Chairman of the ADU Health Committee, AHC, and Convener of the Awba-Ofemili Health Volunteers Team, AHVT, emphasized that misinformation remained one of the biggest threats to public health progress.

“When people rely on rumours or reject scientific advice, diseases spread faster, lives are lost, and development slows down. Our campaign reinforces that knowledge saves lives, not fear or myths,” he said.

The campaign, organised in collaboration with the Office of the President-General, Awba-Ofemili Development Union, ADU, the Nigerian Red Cross Society (Anambra State Branch), and the Anambra State Primary Health Care Development Agency, ASPHCDA, featured health talks, demonstrations, and free medical checks for residents.

Participants were also educated on the causes, symptoms, and prevention of Buruli Ulcer, a neglected tropical disease that affects the skin and soft tissues.

The awareness programme further witnessed the donation of first aid boxes to community institutions and the establishment of Red Cross chapters in local schools, including Community Secondary School, Awba-Ofemili, a move aimed at promoting a culture of health emergency preparedness among the youth.

According to Nweke, the day’s success demonstrates what can be achieved through collaboration and trust between health professionals, community leaders, and residents. He commended the ADU leadership, partners, and volunteers for “turning a grassroots idea into a model for community health empowerment.”

He further cautioned that misinformation, whether from social media, traditional misconceptions, or word of mouth, could easily reverse gains made in public health.

“We must replace rumours with verified knowledge. Every household must become a source of truth, not fear. This is how we can build a healthier and more resilient Awba-Ofemili,” he stressed.

The event drew participation from medical experts, Red Cross educators, community leaders, teachers, and students, all of whom pledged to carry the campaign message — “Know the Signs, Stop the Spread” into their respective quarters.

The Awba-Ofemili Health Committee, AHC, reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining community health education through partnerships, outreach, and follow-up programmes.

The Nigerian Railway Corporation, NRC, has announced that it will commence the Warri– Itakpe Train Service, WITS, on Wednesday, after a temporary suspension of train service.

The Chief Public Relations Officer, Callistus Unyimadu, made this known in a press statement issued on Sunday.

He explained that the temporary suspension was necessary to carry out critical repairs, maintenance, and system checks on the track and rolling stock to ensure the comfort, reliability and safety of passengers.

The online booking portal, he said, would be opened by 12 noon on Monday, October 27, 2025, about 48 hours ahead of resumption, via https://nrc-fane.ng .

He said passengers were encouraged to secure their tickets early through the portal or at designated stations.

“Operations will commence with seven coaches, comprising six standard class and one business class. The train timetable, incorporating temporary speed restrictions (TSR) for safety and operational monitoring, will also be released on Monday.

“The Corporation sincerely apologizes to its esteemed passengers and stakeholders for the inconveniences experienced during the period of suspension and appreciates their patience and understanding.

“The Managing Director, Dr. Kayode Opeifa, assures the travelling public of the NRC’s renewed commitment to safe, reliable, and efficient rail services as passenger operations resume fully on the Warri–Itakpe corridor,” the statement reads in part.

Rivers State governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that the ongoing peace efforts in the state are gradually yielding the desired results, insisting that genuine development can only thrive in an atmosphere of unity and stability.

Fubara made the remarks on Saturday at a civic reception in honour of the Deputy Governor, Prof. Ngozi Odu, held at Government Secondary School by Akabuka community in Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni local government area.

The governor said he was encouraged by growing signs of unity and reconciliation across the state, and urged citizens to embrace peace fully so that development projects could flourish.

“We can’t develop in an environment of chaos. We can’t attract any project to Akabuka when there is a problem. Our disposition has always been towards maintaining peace because it is the only way we can move forward,” Governor Fubara said.

Reflecting on the political turbulence of the past two years, the governor said the return of normalcy had opened a new chapter for progress.
