Other members of the team, sighted in a viral video, were also ordered to report to the Force headquarters.

The Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, made this known in a statement on Wednesday in Abuja.

He said the order was for the affected officer and his team to face the Force Disciplinary Committee for summary disciplinary measures and prosecution.

He condemned the fatal shooting of a suspect, Mene Ogidi, which occurred on Sunday in Effurun area of Delta.

According to him, preliminary reports indicate that operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command responded to credible information from Benin Motor Park on the Warri–Sapele Expressway.

He said the information was about a suspect apprehended by members of a transport union while attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol with four rounds of ammunition.

“While efforts were being made to take the suspect into lawful custody, the team leader, ASP Nuhu Usman, discharged his firearm in clear violation of extant regulations, resulting in the death of the suspect,” he said.

He said the I-G had extended his condolences to the family of the deceased and had assured them that justice would be served in accordance with the law.

Placid said the I-G had also enjoined the public to remain calm and law-abiding as the disciplinary and legal processes take their course.

He said the police would continue to maintain a zero-tolerance stance on extra-judicial actions, abuse of authority, and any conduct that undermines public trust.

The development is contained in an operational report made available on Wednesday in Abuja.

In the FCT under Operation MESA, the reports said troops of 176 Guards Battalion, in conjunction with the Office of the National Security Adviser, ONSA, tracking team, intercepted and arrested two suspected terrorists at a snap checkpoint in Abaji.

It added that the suspects were apprehended while transiting in a commercial vehicle en route Kaduna from Asaba.

The reports said that the suspects had been taken into custody for further investigation.

In Benue, it revealed that troops conducting fighting patrols under Operation Whirl Stroke arrested two suspected terrorists and recovered two motorcycles during operations in Gwer West local government area.

According to the report, further operations in Nasarawa State led to the arrest of six suspected terrorists and drug peddlers in Karshi area of Karu local government area.

It explained that the arrests followed actionable intelligence, adding that troops recovered a locally fabricated pistol, cartridges and other items, and that the suspects were currently in custody.

“Troops also recorded successes in anti-kidnapping operations in Benue, where swift response to distress calls forced kidnappers to abandon their victims and flee.

“At Mbakange in Katsina-Ala local government area, one kidnap victim was rescued and handed over to the police, while two others were freed during a separate operation in Agidi, Konshisha local government area,” it said.

Army said the troops had remained focused with sustained efforts to dismantle criminal networks and enhance security across the nation.

WHO, in its newly published ‘2026 Global Hepatitis Report, on Tuesday, also said Nigeria and nine other countries accounted for 58 per cent of global hepatitis cases.

“Ten countries in Asia and Africa – Bangladesh, China, Ethiopia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Philippines, South Africa and Vietnam – accounted for nearly 70 per cent of hepatitis B related deaths worldwide that year.

“In 2024, 10 countries accounted for 58 per cent of global cases: China, India, Indonesia, Japan, Nigeria, Pakistan, Russia, South Africa, the United States and Vietnam,” WHO said.

Hepatitis B is a viral infection that attacks the liver.

It can be spread through contact with infected body fluids such as blood, saliva, vaginal fluids and semen, or passed from mother to baby.

The disease can be acute or chronic, with chronic infection raising risk of death from cirrhosis and liver cancer.

Hepatitis C is an inflammation of the liver caused by a virus of the same name.

Transmission is spread through exposure to infected blood from unsafe injections, such as sharing needles and syringes or unscreened blood transfusions.

WHO estimates 287 million people or roughly three per cent of the global population were living with chronic Hepatitis B or C infection in 2024.

The new report says the WHO African Region accounted for 68 per cent of new hepatitis B infections.

It also says only 17 per cent of newborns there received a birth-dose vaccination.

Although 240 million people were living with chronic Hepatitis B in 2024, fewer than five per cent were receiving treatment.

The report further says only 20 per cent of people with Hepatitis C have been treated since new effective treatment became available in 2015.

The global health body regretted that limited access to prevention and care continued to drive mortality.

“In 2024, roughly 1.1 million people died from Hepatitis B and 240,000 from Hepatitis C, mainly due to liver cirrhosis and liver cancer,” the report found.

These infections claimed 1.34 million lives in 2024.

The world health agency also said transmission continued at a rate of some 1.8 million infections annually or more than 4,900 cases every day.

However, WHO said countries were making measurable progress in combatting viral hepatitis.

WHO also said new Hepatitis B infections had declined by 32 per cent while Hepatitis C-related deaths had dropped by 12 per cent.

Hepatitis B prevalence among children under five has also fallen to 0.6 per cent, with 85 countries achieving or surpassing the 2030 target of reducing prevalence to 0.1 per cent.

WHO highlighted significant gains made in the fight against Hepatitis B and C, which together account for 95 per cent of all hepatitis-related deaths worldwide.

WHO said the advances reflected sustained and coordinated international action towards viral hepatitis elimination targets adopted at the 2016 World Health Assembly but current rates were insufficient to meet all 2030 elimination targets.

WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus said countries had shown that “eliminating hepatitis is not a pipedream,” but efforts must accelerate.

“Many people remain undiagnosed and untreated due to stigma, weak health systems and inequitable access to care,” Ghebreyesus said.

“While we have the tools to eliminate hepatitis as a public health threat, urgent scale-up of prevention, diagnosis and treatment is needed if the world is to meet the 2030 targets.”

In spite of the challenges, WHO pointed to the highly effective tools that are already available in the fight against the disease.

The Hepatitis B vaccine is more than 95 per cent effective against both acute and chronic infections, while long-term antiviral treatment can help manage chronic infection and prevent severe liver disease.

At the same time, short-course therapy for Hepatitis C, lasting 8 to 12 weeks, can cure more than 95 per cent of cases.

The student was found dead in his residence.

It was gathered that the deceased, Audi Emmanuel, who was a student of Computer Engineering in the institution, hung himself.

The incident occurred along Awolowo Road, Emure Ile-Owo, beside Amotekun Office.

DSP Abayomi Jimoh, the command’s spokesperson, confirmed the incident in a statement made available to newsmen on Tuesday in Akure.

Jimoh said police operatives promptly visited the scene, where the body was recovered and deposited at the morgue for preservation and autopsy.

“Preliminary observations suggest a case of suicide; however, a thorough investigation is ongoing to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.

“The command commiserates with the family of the deceased and urges members of the public to seek support and speak up during moments of emotional distress, as help is always available,” he said.

The president discussed Iran’s proposal with his top national security officials at a meeting in the White House Situation Room, said the reports.

Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, who is among those who attended the meeting said Trump was not likely to accept Iran’s proposal, which implied leaving its nuclear programme for later negotiations.

The proposal was delivered to the United States some few days ago.

He said accepting the proposal could appear to deny Trump a victory since the president had repeatedly insisted that Iran could not have nuclear weapons.

According to him, Iran’s new proposal is better than what we thought they were going to submit.

He stressed any deal must bar Tehran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Trump insisted earlier that any peace deal with Iran would be made on U.S. terms and his timeline.

The president claimed there was “no time frame” for ending the U.S.-Israeli war with Iran and “no time pressure” on either the extended ceasefire or stalled talks.

The placard-carrying students blocked the university’s main gate while singing solidarity songs.

Mr Nasiru Olajide, Deputy Speaker of the Students’ Union, said the protest was aimed at drawing the attention of the university management to the transportation crisis confronting students.

Olajide said that as responsible students, the demonstration was peaceful and focused solely on the transport challenges on campus.

He noted that the available buses were grossly inadequate for the over 40,000 students, as well as artisans, teaching and non-teaching staff, and other campus users.

“We appreciate the First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, for donating 50 buses and 30 tricycles to ease transportation on campus.

“However, these buses are insufficient for the student population, and most of the existing buses are in poor condition,” he said.

Olajide added that students often spend long hours in queues waiting for buses, sometimes missing lectures as a result.

According to him, although the union had engaged the university management on the issue, it had yet to receive a positive response.

He further said that the shortage of campus buses had increased transportation costs for students living off-campus.

“We need more vehicles. We are calling on philanthropists, government officials and other stakeholders to support us with additional buses,” he said.

Olajide also appealed to the university management to provide alternative accommodation for students in Awo Hostel, who had been asked to vacate the facility for renovation.

He stressed that the protest was peaceful, with no incidents of vandalism or destruction of property.

Efforts to obtain a response from the university’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Abiodun Olarewaju, were unsuccessful, as calls to his mobile phone did not connect.

UNICEF Deputy Executive Director, Ted Chaiban, issued the warning, in a statement, following a visit to Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali.

“After a 14-day visit to the Central Sahel, I have witnessed firsthand a region rich in possibilities, yet continuously affected by insecurity, climate shocks, and socio-economic crises,” he said.

Recent reports of violence in Mali “are another example of the stark reminder that such crises in the region create a fragile situation for children, including, sadly the loss of their lives,” he added.

Rebel groups in the West African country carried out a wave of coordinated attacks this past weekend, which the UN Secretary-General has condemned, while UN Emergency Relief Coordinator Tom Fletcher tweeted that “responding to humanitarian needs, protecting civilians and ensuring access to basic services is paramount.”

Chaiban said that even though more than 3.6 people across Central Sahel had been displaced due to violence and forced migration, government officials, community leaders, and displaced persons themselves continued to demonstrate hope.

“In many rural areas, markets are reopening, while communities continue to support each other, just as children are playing, with families and young people yearning to regain their dignity and economic independence,” he said.

Chaiban met political leaders in the three countries who agreed that investing in people and strengthening social cohesion were essential for stability and development.

“Everywhere, a clear ambition is emerging: to make the next generation a priority at the heart of national policies.

“I was encouraged by the strong commitment of the three governments to advance and safeguard the rights of every child,” he said.

He noted that in Niger, government-led reforms had modernised civil registration in more than half of all municipalities.

“As a result, birth registration rates rose to 79 per cent last year, up from 62 per cent in 2023.”

Meanwhile in Burkina Faso, authorities have allocated roughly 25 per cent of the national budget to education and nearly 12 per cent to health, “illustrating a significant effort to scale up essential social services.”

Furthermore, national immunisation coverage in Mali reached 82 per cent in 2024, thus bringing the country closer to ensuring that every child receives life‑saving vaccines.

‘’These policies and commitments are not only good examples.

“More importantly, they take on their full meaning when we witness the positive transformation of the daily lives of children, allowing them to keep moving forward despite the hardships they face,” he said.

Yet, he underscored that “the cycle of violence is still dangerously evident, and the situation of children is particularly alarming.”

He recalled that the UN had documented more than 1,500 grave violations against children, including killing, abduction, and recruitment and use by armed groups, while more than 8,400 schools were rendered inaccessible in 2025 alone.

Chaiban explained that lack of access to education and essential services exposed young people to illness and psychosocial distress, while undermining their chances to experience full and healthy development.

‘’Everyone I met during my visit shared the same concern: providing better protection for children and families, restoring peace, enabling access to healthcare and education, and guaranteeing a safe return home,” he said.

The top official was also heartened by UNICEF teams on the ground who are committed to protecting children’s rights throughout the Sahel.

They also support governments, including in the areas of health, water, education and protection.

‘‘I have seen that our response is most effective when it reinforces resilience by strengthening local systems, empowering communities, and fostering inclusive governance, whilst always ensuring that children’s voices are heard and taken into account,” he said.

Chaiban urged the international community not to ignore the plight of children across the region.

“Faced with the resilience of children in the Sahel, the world must not turn a blind eye; there are still millions of children with urgent humanitarian needs that require immediate action,” he said.

“Their resilience does not mean that they are fine nor must it be used as an excuse for inaction,” he added.

Police spokesman, DSP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu, disclosed this in a statement issued in Katsina on Monday, adding that two others were injured.

He said the attackers struck at about 2:40 p.m. on Sunday, opening fire on unsuspecting residents and killing victims on the spot.

“The assailants fled as security forces closed in on the scene,” Sadiq-Aliyu said.

He confirmed a joint security team, including police, military and other agencies, responded swiftly to a distress call, forcing the attackers to retreat.

“The injured victims were taken to a nearby hospital for urgent treatment, while the deceased were buried according to Islamic rites,” he added.

Following the attack, the command reinforced security in the area, deploying additional tactical teams to prevent further incidents.

Sadiq-Aliyu said the command had also ordered intensified patrols and closer collaboration between security agencies and local communities.

“Efforts are ongoing to track down the perpetrators of the heinous act”, he said, urging residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious movements.

The Sector Commander, Andre Longkam, disclosed this in Kaduna.

He said the crash occurred at about 1:45 p.m. at the Federal Eye Centre Junction and involved a DAF truck, a Honda vehicle and a motorcycle.

Longkam said preliminary findings indicated that the Honda vehicle collided with the motorcycle, resulting in the death of the rider and a passenger.

“Two persons lost their lives in the crash,” he said.

He added that in the aftermath of the incident, some irate youths set the affected vehicles ablaze, causing additional damage.

The sector commander said personnel of the FRSC, in collaboration with the Police swiftly moved to the scene to manage traffic and restore normalcy.

According to him, measures were put in place to ensure free flow of traffic and prevent further incidents.

Longkam expressed concern over the crash and urged motorists to exercise caution, especially on roads under construction.

He advised drivers to obey traffic regulations and avoid actions capable of worsening emergency situations.

The FRSC boss said investigation into the cause of the crash was ongoing, adding that the command remained committed to ensuring safety on the nation’s roads.

The chairman, Mr Adetayo Akerele, confirmed this in a statement signed by the spokesperson, Mr Abdulraheem Gbadeyan, on Sunday in Lagos.

Akerele said the taskforce supervised activities across several hotspots known for recurring environmental violations.

“Areas covered included Ikeja, Iyana-Ipaja, Abule-Egba, Agege, Iyana-Oworo, Lagos Island, Lekki–Ajah Expressway, Ijora Causeway, Ijora Underbridge and Iddo,” he said.

He noted significant compliance with restrictions on vehicular movement and commercial activities, though some residents failed to participate actively.

In a related development, the taskforce apprehended 50 individuals along the Lekki–Epe Expressway for allegedly disturbing public peace during the sanitation period.

“Some suspects were implicated in acts threatening public infrastructure, including billboards and road signage.

“All suspects will be charged to court accordingly,” he said.

Akerele said the monthly sanitation exercise targeted indiscriminate waste disposal, open defecation, street trading and other environmental infractions.

He reiterated that violators would be prosecuted under the Lagos State Environmental Protection Law, 2017.

He stressed that consistent enforcement and public cooperation remained key to achieving lasting environmental order.

The chairman urged youths to avoid street football during sanitation hours and participate in keeping communities clean.

He reaffirmed the government’s zero-tolerance stance, noting sustained compliance was essential to making Lagos safer, cleaner and more liveable.
