Sonayon-James currently serves as the State Deputy Woman Leader of APC.

Unveiling the candidate in Lagos, the state chairman of the APC and chairman of the Forum of 36 APC State Chairmen, Mr Cornelius Ojelabi, described Sonayon-James’ emergence as the outcome of wide consultations and a rigorous selection process.

Ojelabi said that the party considered competence, leadership capacity, grassroots acceptance, party loyalty, and the ability to contribute meaningfully to the continued development of Lagos State in Sonayon-James’ choice.

The chairman said that Sonayon-James distinguished herself through her exceptional commitment to service, unwavering dedication to the party.

According to him, the candidate has also distinguished herself in strength of character, innovative thinking, and proven track record of leadership across the public, private, and political sectors.

He expressed confidence in the APC ticket, describing the Hamzat/Sonayon-James combination as a blend of experience, innovation, grassroots connection, and visionary leadership.

Ojelabi urged residents of the state to support the APC team, noting that a vote for the party represented a vote for continuity, prosperity, inclusive growth, and a greater Lagos.

“Hon. Damilola Sonayon-James is a 41-year-old accomplished governance and development professional with over 15 years of experience.

“Her experience spans public policy, institutional development, sustainability, risk governance, human capital strategy, stakeholder engagement, and community development.

“Widely recognised for her grassroots engagement and commitment to community development, she previously served as Supervisor for Agriculture and Social Services in Badagry-West Local Council Development Area.

“She (Sonayon-James) championed several impactful initiatives focused on agricultural development, women empowerment, youth inclusion, educational support, community welfare, and social intervention programmes,” Ojelabi said.

According to the chairman, beyond public office, Sonayon-James has remained actively involved in grassroots political mobilisation, women’s leadership development, youth empowerment, and community advocacy across Lagos State.

“Her dedication to service and her close connection with the people have earned her widespread admiration, particularly among women and young people, many of whom affectionately refer to her as ‘Sisi Eko of APC’.

“Her emergence as deputy governorship candidate further reinforces the APC’s commitment to inclusive youth participation, women representation.

“This reinforces APC’s commitment to the continued advancement of Lagos State as Africa’s leading centre for innovation, opportunity, and sustainable development,” he said.

The deputy governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, recently emerged the party’s governorship candidate.

The renowned actor took to his social media platforms to share the video clip of the ceremony of the award for his great feat.

He said such an honour was a reflection of a career shift from personal ambition to inspiring young dreamers.

Adedimeji said his industry journey, which has impacted many young ones, started when he decided to showcase his talent by building a name that would distinguish him from others.

According to him, his focus was to inspire young people, adding that he still remained committed to his work and nothing would stop him.

He noted that such recognition was  proof of hard work, dedication, professionalism and determination, adding that he once looked up to industry icons and found it surreal to now be regarded as one.

Adedimeji appreciated the Africa Illustration Awards for deeming it fit to recognise him, saying that such a remarkable honour would show others that when you believe in yourself, success is possible.

“When I set out on this journey, the goal was pretty simple: to find creative ways to show the world what I can do, and then make a name for myself while at it.

“As growth set in, the goal shifted further to inspiring every young dreamer. All I’ve done down the years is to achieve this.

“So, when this came in, it felt different; this is a testament to hard work, dedication, professionalism and determination.

“I have looked up to icons; it’s surreal to be called one. I hope this inspires you to confirm to yourself that it’s possible if you believe.

Adedimeji recently achieved major milestones, notably winning Best Indigenous Language Film (West Africa) at the 2026 Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards, AMVCA, for his hit film ‘Lisabi: A Legend is Born’.

He gained popularity with his first major role in Yewande Adekoya’s 2013 movie titled Kudi Klepto.

Adedimeji has acted in over 100 Nigerian movies since he began acting 15 years ago.

He is currently a brand ambassador for Airtel and Numatville Megacity.

The tragic incident occurred around 9 a.m. on Pankhurst Avenue.

Emergency responders discovered Orabiyi with severe stab wounds in a nearby garden on Rayleigh Road, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Talay’s death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Instagram handle @Queencleo, described their loss as an “overwhelming sadness”.

Throughout his career, he wrote and contributed to chart-topping hits for major international artists, including Chipmunk’s UK number-one single “Oopsy Daisy” and tracks for Dua Lipa, Usher, and Britney Spears.

His sudden passing triggered an outpouring of tributes around the globe as the family remembered Riley not only for his professional accomplishments, but also for his character.

Notable singers, including Stormzy, took to the comment section to write, “I’m sorry bro”.

Craig David said, “Sending so much love to you and the family. His beautiful energy will continue to be felt and shown from the other side.”

Riley was a highly acclaimed musical talent in the UK grime and R&B scenes.

Obasanjo disclosed this in a statement on Monday in Abeokuta.

She said the decision followed extensive consultations and careful reflection on developments within the party.

The former lawmaker said that she joined the APC in good faith and worked to strengthen its grassroots support across her senatorial district and other parts of the state.

According to her, she remained committed to internal democracy, fairness and mutual respect throughout her governorship aspiration.

She said that she accepted the party’s consensus arrangement in the interest of unity and subsequently engaged constructively with the chosen candidate.

”However, my contributions, sacrifices and the aspirations of my supporters were not adequately recognised.

“After deep reflection and wide consultations, I have formally communicated my decision to resign my membership of the APC.

“As I stated in my letter to the leadership of the party, when disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table,” she said.

Obasanjo appreciated President Bola Tinubu and other party leaders for the courtesies extended to her during her membership.

She reaffirmed her commitment to service, justice, fairness and the continued development of Ogun and Nigeria.

She edged out 20 finalists to clinch the highly coveted crown at the grand finale of the pageant held over the weekend in Lagos.

The competition themed “Pride, Power, and Purpose,” included contestants from across the country, featuring talent showcase, interview and evening wear rounds.

With the victory, the 26-year-old Queen from Port Harcourt, Rivers State, will represent Nigeria at the 73rd Miss World Festival scheduled to hold in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, from August  9 to September 5.

Karibi-George succeeds Joy Raimi, Miss World Nigeria 2025, who represented Nigeria at the 72nd Miss World pageant in Hyderabad, India, where she reached the Top 20 and placed among the Top 5 from Africa.

Silverbird Group founder and former lawmaker representing Bayelsa East, Sen. Ben Murray-Bruce, who  celebrated the win, described Karibi-George as “more than a queen.”

He posted on X, “WE HAVE A QUEEN! A new chapter begins. Please join us in celebrating TAMUNOSOYE KARIBI-GEORGE, representing Bayelsa State, as the newly crowned Miss World Nigeria 2026!”

He highlighted her advocacy work through the initiative Beyond Labels, which focuses on inclusion, dignity, and empowerment for children with special needs.

“More than a queen, Tamunosoye is a passionate advocate for change. Through her initiative, Beyond Labels, she champions inclusion, dignity, and empowerment for children with special needs.”

Miss World Nigeria, organised by the Silverbird Group, is one of Nigeria’s premier beauty pageants.

A credible security source in the area disclosed the operational success on Sunday in Sokoto.

The source said the incident occurred on June 4, adding that two kidnapped farmers were rescued.

“The victims have been taken to the General Hospital in Isa for treatment. The vigilance and swift response of troops saved lives and property.

“Proactive measures are being intensified to protect lives and property. There is need for increased vigilance among farmers,” the source said.

Similarly, troops of Operation Fansan Yamma foiled a Lakurawa terrorists’ attack on Magonho community in Tangaza local government area of the state.

The source, who also pleaded anonymity, said the incident also occurred on June 4, adding that one civilian sustained gunshot injuries during the encounter.

“The troops’ quick response saved lives and property.

“The synergy among security agencies during the operation is worthy of commendation.

“The troops are always battle-ready to tackle all forms of criminality in the country but need sustained community support and vigilance,” the source said.

Maj.-Gen. Abdulsalam Abubakar, Theatre Commander of the North East Joint Task Force Operation Hadin Kai, said that the rescue followed a coordinated special operation conducted on June 6 across multiple fronts around the Mandara Mountains.

According to him, Special Operations Forces initially carried out preliminary missions that created confusion within terrorist camps, paving the way for ground troops of the 26 Task Force Brigade to extract the captives successfully.

“The rescued civilians were among residents abducted during a terrorist attack on Ngoshe community on March 3, 2026.

“However, the operation recorded a tragic setback as two infants died during the rescue effort due to the harsh and difficult terrain encountered while moving the victims to safety,” he said.

He added that all rescued persons underwent immediate medical screening upon arrival, while those requiring urgent medical attention were stabilised by brigade medical personnel and admitted to the General Hospital in Gwoza for treatment.

“The victims were also provided with food and water before being moved to a secure holding facility pending their handover to relevant authorities and reunification with their families,” he said.

A reliable security source disclosed the major operational successes on Saturday in Sokoto.

The source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said several bandits, including kingpins, were killed while numerous others escaped with gunshot wounds.

The source further disclosed that the operation was conducted on June 4, in collaboration with other security agencies and local vigilantes in the area, assuring that the tempo would be sustained.

“The swift response, professionalism, and courage displayed by our military personnel averted what could have been a tragic incident.

“Let me once again reaffirm our commitment to protecting the lives and property of the citizenry.

“The army engaged them in a fierce battle. The bandits later retreated and fled into forests in neighbouring states.

“Soldiers also recovered several weapons and motorcycles,” the source confirmed.

Although not authorised to speak on the matter, the source revealed that the terrorists suffered heavy losses adding that the operation was carried out by personnel of 8 Division, Operation Fansan Yamma.

The Special Adviser to Governor Ahmad Aliyu on Security Matters, retired Col. Ahmad Usman, and other citizens commended the Nigerian Army for the significant successes recorded against bandits in the state.

Hannah Ojo and Esther Kolawole won silver and bronze in their categories.

Ojo and Kolawole have joined Christianah Ogunsanya in securing medals at the ongoing competition.

The championship allows athletes to earn crucial seeding points for upcoming global championships.

Nigeria’s Ojo put up a 10-0 superlative display against Mongolian Tuvshinjargal Tarav to set up a semi-final clash with Priya of India, who she later beat 5-1.

However, the reigning African champion’s impressive run came to an end, losing to Kajal of India 0-8 in the final to settle for silver.

Earlier, Kolawole won  a bronze medal for Nigeria after she overwhelmed Huan Yang of China 10-0.

Kolawole made a statement of intent in her run to the bronze medal match, upsetting Russian world number one, Amina Tandelova 6-0.

She lost narrowly to world silver medallist, Kim Ok-ju of North Korea 4-5.

Team Nigeria concluded the Ranking Series Tournament with one silver and two bronze, totalling three medals from four athletes that represented the country.

Four female wrestlers represented the country in different categories: Mercy Genesis 50kg; Tolulope Ogunsanya 53kg; Esther Kolawole 62kg and Hannah Ojo 76kg.

The third United World Wrestling, UWW, Ranking Series for female wrestling in Mongolia, tagged ‘Ulaanbaatar Open’, is held annually on the international calendar.

This is the third of four UWW Ranking Series tournaments, offering wrestlers crucial seeding points.

The championship, which started on June 4, ended on Saturday in Mongolia.

The command’s spokesperson, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, disclosed this in a statement on Saturday in Abeokuta.

Babaseyi said the suspects were arrested at the Atiba area of Ijebu-Ode following intelligence-driven investigations by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit.

According to him, the development followed an earlier statement issued on June 4, over arrest of the suspects by personnel of the Nigeria Forest Security Service.

“Preliminary findings revealed that the suspects are wanted in connection with an ongoing investigation into a kidnapping and murder case reported in the Okada area of Edo State.

“Further intelligence gathered by the Command indicates that the suspects are alleged members of a seven-man kidnapping syndicate linked to the incident under investigation.

“During the course of the investigation, operatives recovered one pair of Police camouflage uniform and three mobile phones from the suspects,” he said.

The spokesperson said that the alleged offences were committed outside Ogun.

He added that the suspects as well as recovered exhibits would be transferred to the Police Command in Edo for further investigation and necessary legal action.

Babaseyi said that the state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr Bode Ojajuni, has commended the professionalism and diligence of operatives involved in the investigation.

He reiterated the command’s resolve not to allow criminal elements use Ogun as a hideout or transit point for unlawful activities, while  assuring residents that the command would continue to deploy intelligence-led policing strategies and strengthen collaborations to enhance public safety.

He, consequently, urged the public to remain vigilant and continue providing credible information to security agencies to support efforts at tackling crime.
