President Bola Tinubu has formally reported recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals in South Africa to the African Union.

Tinubu spoke through Vice President Kashim Shettima on Sunday at the 21st extraordinary session of the AU Assembly in Luanda, Angola.

The president warned that the attacks undermine African solidarity, unity and peaceful coexistence, requiring urgent collective attention from continental leaders.

“Nigeria wishes to express its concern over the recurring xenophobic and Afrophobic attacks against Africans and other nationals in South Africa,” Tinubu said.

He called for stronger continental efforts against xenophobia and Afrophobia, emphasising dialogue, preventive diplomacy and collective action to preserve African unity.

Tinubu also acknowledged South Africa’s sovereign right to enforce its immigration laws and recognised the country’s contributions to Africa’s development.

However, he urged African leaders to reaffirm their commitment to protecting the safety, dignity and fundamental rights of all African nationals.

“It is on this note that Nigeria calls on this august Assembly to place the matter on the agenda,” he said.

Tinubu requested that the issue be considered at the AU’s 40th Ordinary Session, scheduled for January 2027, for appropriate continental action.

He said collective intervention was necessary to address recurring attacks and strengthen peaceful coexistence among Africans across national borders.

On continental security, Tinubu supported adoption of the Luanda Action Plan as a practical roadmap for strengthening conflict prevention mechanisms.

He argued that preventing conflicts remained more cost-effective and sustainable than managing crises after violence had already erupted.

“For Nigeria, conflict prevention remains more cost-effective and sustainable than conflict management,” Tinubu said.

The president warned that fragmented peace initiatives and growing external interference could weaken the AU’s conflict-prevention mechanisms and African ownership.

He specifically cited foreign military forces, mercenaries and private defence contractors as factors capable of undermining continent-led approaches to peace and security.

“The growing reliance on external actors risks weakening African institutions and the principle of African ownership,” he said.

Tinubu also urged arms-producing and exporting countries to strengthen cooperation with African states to prevent weapons diversion to terrorist groups.

He called for measures ensuring weapons and ammunition produced within exporting countries’ jurisdictions did not reach terrorists or other non-state armed groups.

The president maintained that the AU possessed robust mechanisms for preventing and resolving conflicts, but limited trust and inconsistent implementation weakened their effectiveness.

He therefore called on member states to renew their commitment to collective responsibility for Africa’s peace and security.

Tinubu urged African leaders to prioritise home-grown solutions, stronger cooperation and shared responsibility in confronting the continent’s security challenges.

“Let us therefore renew our collective commitment to solidarity, cooperation, and shared responsibility as we build the Africa we want,” Tinubu said.

…Calls for end to post-election attacks

The All Progressives Congress, APC, governorship candidate in the August 15 Osun governorship election, Mr. Bola Oyebamiji, has congratulated Governor Ademola Adeleke on his re-election.

Oyebamiji, in a statement on Saturday in Osogbo, urged Adeleke to protect the lives and property of all citizens, particularly during the post-election period.

“In the spirit of democracy and as we commemorate the 35th anniversary of the creation of our dear Osun State, I congratulate Governor Ademola Adeleke on his victory in the August 15 governorship election as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC.

“At the same time, I call on Mr Governor, as the Chief Security Officer of the state, to do everything within his constitutional responsibility to protect the lives and property of all citizens, particularly during this sensitive post-election period,” he said.

Oyebamiji urged APC members not to be discouraged by the outcome of the election but to remain resolute and have confidence in institutions established to protect democratic rights.

He called for an immediate end to what he described as killings, harassment and intimidation of APC members and supporters.

“The senseless killings, harassment and intimidation of members and supporters of our party must stop forthwith.

“Attacks on innocent citizens and their businesses must not be allowed to continue,” he said.

Oyebamiji also expressed concern over reports of attacks on small and medium-sized businesses allegedly because of the perceived political affiliations or non-allegiance of their owners to the Accord Party.

He described such attacks as condemnable and unacceptable in a state aspiring to achieve economic growth, attract investment and create sustainable employment opportunities.

“The provision of security and a conducive environment for businesses to thrive is not negotiable,” he said.

The APC candidate commended party members for their courage, resilience and steadfast commitment to the party and its Prosperity Agenda.

He noted that democracy was not an end in itself but a means through which the aspirations and welfare of the people could be advanced.

“We will therefore continue to march forward with faith and determination towards a greater Osun.

“A state where our collective resources are equitably deployed, and where governance serves the greater good of our people rather than narrow interests,” he said.

Oyebamiji said the governorship election had come and gone, adding that following INEC’s declaration of the results, the party had commenced wider consultations with elders and other critical stakeholders on the way forward.

He said the party, being committed to the rule of law, would continue to pursue justice and fairness through lawful and constitutional means, particularly in relation to the electoral process.

Oyebamiji also called on APC leaders, members and supporters to begin mobilisation and preparations for the 2027 general elections, particularly the re-election bid of President Bola Tinubu and other candidates of the party.

He urged party members to close ranks, strengthen the party’s structures and work tirelessly towards securing victories for Tinubu and other APC candidates in the state.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, in the early hours of August 16 declared Adeleke the winner of Osun governorship election.

He polled 511,067 votes to defeat his closest rival, Bola Oyebamiji of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 444,815 votes.

The INEC Returning Officer, Prof. Joshua Ogunwole, who declared the results at the INEC collation centre, said the candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Najeem Salaam, came third with 17,180 votes.

Hassan said joint security patrols were still ongoing in the affected areas, adding that normalcy had been restored.

He quoted the Commissioner of Police, CP Rabiu Muhammad, as commending the communities for their cooperation and the gallantry of the security operatives.

Muhammad reaffirmed the command’s resolve to sustain its offensive against banditry and other forms of criminality in the state.

Troops of Operation Hadin Kai have foiled a terrorist attack on Kukawa, Borno, neutralising about 26 terrorists and destroying 10 motorcycles.

This was made known in a statement on Saturday by Capt. Mohammed Goni, Acting Military Information Officer, Headquarters Joint Task Force, North East.

Goni said the terrorists attacked troops of 101 Special Forces Battalion deployed in Kukawa at about 10:50 p.m. on August 28.

He said the troops responded with direct and indirect fire, repelling the attack and forcing the terrorists to withdraw towards the Cross Kauwa axis.

According to him, the terrorists sustained heavy casualties during the encounter, with several others wounded while fleeing the area.

Goni said the Air Component of Operation Hadin Kai was immediately deployed to interdict the fleeing terrorists as they withdrew on motorcycles.

He said in spite of challenging weather conditions, the air component struck terrorists taking cover under trees, neutralising an estimated 10 of them.

He said intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance assets of the Multi-National Joint Task Force subsequently tracked about 20 motorcycles conveying fleeing terrorists towards the Tunbuns/Kangarwa axis.

According to him, the intelligence enabled the Air Component to conduct a follow-up precision strike, neutralising an additional 15 terrorists and destroying 10 motorcycles.

Goni said ground troops subsequently recovered two motorcycles, neutralised another terrorist and recovered assorted ammunition and other items during exploitation of the area.

He said the coordinated ground and air operations effectively disrupted the attack and denied the terrorists the opportunity to regroup or sustain operations in the area.

The military spokesman said troops were replenished by air with essential combat supplies to sustain the pressure on the terrorists.

He said four military personnel sustained injuries during the engagement, adding that the wounded personnel were promptly evacuated and remained in stable condition.

Goni said troops had commenced reorganisation and extensive exploitation of the area, while battle damage assessment and further evaluation of the encounter continued.

He said the successful defence of Kukawa demonstrated the capability of Operation Hadin Kai to integrate ground forces, air assets and intelligence for rapid response to terrorist threats.

Goni said the Joint Task Force remained committed to sustaining offensive and intelligence-led operations to degrade terrorist capabilities and protect communities across the North-East.

The operations also resulted in the destruction of terrorist enclaves, recovery of weapons and disruption of criminal activities in several states.

This is contained in an operational report made available Saturday in Abuja.

The report said troops of Operation Savannah Shield, in conjunction with the police, forest guards and hunters, rescued the abducted king and two women.

It said the victims were rescued during a search-and-rescue operation at a terrorist hideout in Isin local government area of Kwara.

According to the report, troops engaged the terrorists during the operation and neutralised one of them before rescuing the victims, who were evacuated to a hospital for medical attention.

The report also revealed that troops of Operation Fansan Yamma neutralised two terrorists and recovered two AK-47 rifles and three motorcycles during an encounter at Maikujera in Sokoto State.

It said that troops had mobilised to intercept a large group of armed terrorists reportedly moving from Zamfara into Sokoto State.

According to the report, the terrorists ambushed the troops at a bridge linking Rabah and Maikujera villages, but the troops fought through the ambush and overwhelmed them with superior firepower.

“In Katsina, troops of 17 Brigade, supported by the Office of the National Security Adviser Tactical Team, conducted clearance operations against terrorist enclaves in Matazu Local Government Area.

“The operation targeted terrorist enclaves at Maharba, Karaduwa and Kachalla Muhammadu Filani, a notorious terrorist leader operating in Matazu and Musawa Local Government Areas.

“Supported by air assets, the troops destroyed the identified enclaves and recovered an RPG-7, a motorcycle, mobile phones and mattresses.

“The troops also destroyed structures believed to have provided support to the terrorists,” it said.

The report said that troops had, in another operation in Katsina, responded to a terrorist attack at Danakwabo Village in Kankara local government area following the killing of a terrorist kingpin by members of a vigilance group.

It said the terrorists had fled before the troops arrived, after killing a civilian and carting away his motorcycle.

The report also said troops responded to another terrorist attack around Sifawa and Danchadi in Bodinga local government area of Sokoto.

It said that they foiled the planned attack and engaged the terrorists, forcing them to withdraw into the surrounding forest.

In Zamfara, it said the troops of 1 Brigade at Forward Operating Base Gwashi discovered and safely detonated an Improvised Explosive Device planted by terrorists along the Gurusu-Gwashi Road in Bukkuyum local government area.

Shooting Stars Sports Club, 3SC, of Ibadan began their 2026/27 Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, campaign on an encouraging note, defeating newly promoted Inter Lagos FC 2-1 at the Lekan Salami Stadium, Ibadan, on Friday.

Shooting Stars thrilled their home fans, who turned out in large numbers to cheer the team to victory in their opening fixture, with their performance.

The 3SC took the lead in the 15th minute when Lucky Emmanuel struck a powerful shot from inside the six-yard box to put the hosts ahead.

Inter Lagos responded in the 33rd minute as Uchenna Njoku capitalised on an error by Shooting Stars captain, Gbolagade Adelowo, to convert a pass from his teammate, Iyede Kewe, to make it 1-1.

3SC eventually regained the lead on the stroke of half-time after Inter Lagos defender Jamiu Arowolo was penalised for fouling Shooting Stars’ Lucky Emmanuel in the box.

Sodiq Ibrahim stepped up and calmly converted the resulting penalty in the 45th minute to give the Oluyole Warriors a 2-1 lead at the break.

Shooting Stars had an opportunity to extend their advantage in the second half from the penalty spot, but Adams Mustapha failed to convert, leaving the scoreline at 2-1 until the final whistle.

The victory serves as a moral booster for 3SC, who are returning to continental football this season, after a strong finish in the 2025/26 NPFL campaign.

Shooting Stars secured a return to continental football after 27 years at the end of the 2025/26 campaign when it placed third on the league table behind champions, Rangers International, Enough and runners-up Rivers United.

It marked their highest league finish in over a decade and signaled a major turnaround for one of Nigeria’s most historic clubs.

For Shooting Stars, the 2025/26 campaign was built on defensive solidity and home dominance at the Lekan Salami Stadium, a foundation the team will hope to build on as they juggle domestic and continental engagements in the new season.
