Former vice president, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has formally resigned his membership of the leading opposition party, Peoples Democratic Party.
His resignation is with immediate effect.
The resignation is contained in a letter addressed to the chairman of the party at Jada 1 Ward, Jada local government area of Adamawa State.
In the letter dated July 14, 2025, Atiku declared that the decision to leave the party was heart-breaking, saying it was informed by the crisis within it.
His words: “It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognising the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.”
He, however, wished the party and its leadership all the best in the future.
He thanked the party for the opportunities and support he enjoyed as a member.

Said he: “Serving two full terms as vice-president of Nigeria and being a presidential candidate twice has been one of the most significant chapters of my life.”
Atiku added: “As a founding father of this esteemed party, it is indeed heart-breaking for me to make this decision.
“However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.”
Recall that Atiku and some top politicians have formed a coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Adopting the African Democratic Congress, ADC, as platform, the coalition looks forward to wresting power from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
