…holds conference in Abuja on Sept 2, 3
The Association of Communication Scholars and Professionals of Nigeria, ACSPN, has conferred Fellowship on some distinguished figures in Nigeria’s communication, journalism and media industries.
The conferment was announced in a statement by the president of the association, Professor Rotimi Olatunji, ahead of its 13th annual conference scheduled for September 2 and 3, 2026, at the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Abuja.
Those awarded the fellowship are Professor Idowu Sobowale; Professor Rotimi Olatunji; Professor Umaru Pate; Professor Nosa Owens-Ibie; Professor Stella Chinyere Okunna; Mr Lanre Idowu and Mr Dapo Olorunyomi.
The honour was said to be in recognition of their outstanding contributions to communication scholarship, journalism practice, professional development and the growth of ACSPN.
The 13th annual conference of ACSPN has as its theme, “Media, Technology and Elections in Africa: Navigating Digital Disruption and the New Dynamics of Electoral Communication” and will be held from September 2 to 3, 2026, in Abuja.
The venue is the National Open University of Nigeria Auditorium.
To chair the opening ceremony is the Executive Secretary/CEO, Nigerian Shippers Council, Akutah Pius Ukeyima, while the chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Professor Ojo Amupitan, SAN, will deliver the keynote address.
The lead paper presenter will be the Deputy National President, ACSPN, Prof Abigail Ogwezzy-Ndisika, while the Director General, Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria, ARCON, Dr. Lekan Fadolapo, will be the special guest.
In its communication, the association emphasized the relevance of the theme of the conference and the significance of the chairman of INEC, Amupitan as the one to deliver the keynote address.
The statement reads in part: “Furthermore, being a distinguished intellectual voice and the INEC helmsman, who is the custodian of electoral integrity in Nigeria, shaping this discourse will illuminate Nigeria’s path to the 2027 general elections; as your work and views remain a cornerstone for navigating the evolving complexities of media, technology and elections. As a result, we are confident that your presentation will serve as a bridge between high-level policy and grassroots reality, shaping the discourse on media, technology and 2027 general elections in Nigeria.
“This conference theme presents INEC with an independent platform to lead the narratives on navigating digital disruption and redefining electoral communication. It also provides an opportunity for co-developing evidence-based frameworks to combat media polarization, shadow financing by partisan influencers and deepfake deluges that erode trust.”
ACSPN expressed the desire to embark on a strategic partnership to amplify INEC’s tech agenda through joint research, capacity-building workshops and public campaigns attuned to the new dynamics of electoral communication, ensuring Nigeria pioneers ethical digital electoral innovation for 2027.
It said Amupitan’s decision to honour its invitation was a boost to the efforts to deepen democracy via communication excellence, “weaving the theme into a legacy of collaborative foresight and advancement of Nigeria’s democratic renaissance.”
