BREAKING: Tinubu nominates new CBN governor, four deputies

President Bola Tinubu has approved the nomination of Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso for the position of Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN.

If approved by the Senate, Cardoso will serve for a period of five years at the first instance.

According to a statement by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr. Ajuri Ngelale, the president’s directive was in conformity with Section 8 (1) of the Central Bank of Nigeria Act, 2007, which vests in the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the authority to appoint the Governor and Four (4) Deputy Governors for the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), subject to confirmation by the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

He also announced that the president had approved the nomination of four new Deputy Governors of the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, for a term of five years at the first instance.

The deputy governors are Mrs. Emem Nnana Usoro; Mr. Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo; Mr. Philip Ikeazor and Dr. Bala M. Bello.

He added that “In line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda, the President expects the above listed nominees to successfully implement critical reforms at the Central Bank of Nigeria, which will enhance the confidence of Nigerians and international partners in the restructuring of the Nigerian economy toward sustainable growth and prosperity for all.”

Cardoso, is a banker, chartered stockbroker and public policy expert.

He has worked in the public, private and development sectors.

He had served as the Commissioner for Economic Planning and Budget in Lagos State.

It would be recalled that the former governor of Central Bank, Godwin Emefiele, was removed from office in June, and has since been in the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS.

He is being probed for activities at the apex bank during his tenure.
