Former president of the Nigeria Union of Journalists and Africa Union of Journalists, Mr. Lanre Ogundipe, has called for full due process and fair hearing for Kaduna journalist, Farida Isiak.

In a press statement issued on October 23, 2026, Ogundipe said attention should now focus on ensuring that the fresh proceedings in Isiak’s case scheduled for November 3, 2026, fully respect her rights.

Isiak, a 23-year-old journalist with Nagarta Radio, was arrested following a Facebook post concerning the reported treatment of her parents by the police.

She was subsequently convicted and sentenced to four years’ imprisonment or a N1.75 million fine.

Her bail has now been secured, with the earlier conviction set aside, and the matter is to be heard afresh.

Ogundipe welcomed the position of the NUJ president, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, who called for a fair hearing and proper judicial consideration of the case.

“My position is straightforward: Farida must be accorded full due process. She should have adequate legal representation and a fair opportunity to present her defence, while the prosecution should equally be allowed to present its case in accordance with the law,” Ogundipe said.

He stated that the demand was not for special treatment because Isiak is a journalist, noting that journalists, like every other citizen, are subject to the law but are equally entitled to protections guaranteed by law, including the fundamental right to a fair hearing.

According to him, the case also underlines the importance of protecting the legitimate space for journalism to question, report on and scrutinise public institutions within the limits of the law.

“The fresh proceedings should therefore be conducted fairly and independently, with the court determining the matter on the evidence and applicable law,” he said.

Ogundipe added: “The demand is simple: Let Farida receive a fair hearing, let every party comply with due process, and let the court determine the case without interference.”
