Application for the 2027 Tarbell Fellowship for AI Journalism is open.

The application which opened on September 28 will close on November 22, 2026.

The fellowship is a one-year programme for talented journalists and emerging reporters interested in covering Artificial Intelligence and its impact on society.

Highlights of the fellowship are:

*Nine-month newsroom placement at a major media organisation

  • US$60,000–US$80,000 stipend, depending on location
  • Senior Fellows may receive US$90,000–US$110,000
  • 10-week remote AI Journalism Fundamentals course
  • Weeklong Fellowship Summit in the San Francisco Bay Area
  • Travel and accommodation covered for the summit
  • Previous placements have included Bloomberg, The Guardian, TIME, NPR and The Verge

The fellowship is open to:

  • Journalists and emerging reporters from around the world.
  • Journalist with strong interest in AI and its societal impact
  • Previous newsroom experience is desirable but not required
  • No university degree required
  • No age limit
  • Applicants from journalism, technology, AI, machine learning and AI governance backgrounds are welcome
  • International applicants can apply

The schedules are:

  • Applications: 28 September–22 November 2026
  • Work test: December 2026–January 2027
  • Interviews: January–March 2027
  • Fellowship selected: Late March 2027
  • Training: June–August 2027

• Newsroom placement: September 2027–May 2028.
