Nigeria U-17 women’s team, the Flamingos, thrashed Niger Republic 5-0 in their opening game of the ongoing WAFU-U17 women’s tournament in Yamoussoukro, Cote d’Ivoire on Wednesday.

The Nigerian team, who won the last edition of the tournament, completely dominated the game as they put five goals beyond their opponents.

Captain Harmony Chidi opened the floodgate for Nigeria when she found the back of the net in the 16th minute.

Awawu Bashiru doubled the lead for Nigeria to go into the break two goals up.

In spite of the dominating play, the Flamingos had to wait till the 83rd minute for their third goal.

Ohunene Sunday made it 3-0 before Olubebube Umejiaku made it 4-0 not long after.

Ayomide Rotimi completed the rout for the Hakeem Busari-led team in stoppage time, finishing brilliantly to make it 5-0.

The victory gives the Flamingos the needed boost as they face the Princesses of Ghana on Saturday in a mouth-watering encounter.

Nigeria and Ghana are among four African teams that qualified for this year’s FIFA U-17 women’s World Cup to be hosted by Morocco in October.
